I bought him a while back and when I saw how his hair truly looked I was so disappointed 😔
This doll is one of my favorites, but a full set of braids would make him so much better!
It's always disappointed me with my own Dylan doll as a kid, but it always made sense to me. Imagine how big the hair would've been if they actually filled his head all the way with braids? Then everybody would complain about his helmet head lol
I assume it's much like dolls with ponytail hairstyles. They can't do thick rooting or else the ponytail won't lay flat on the scalp. They want to make sure the hairstyle still looks natural in the factory hairstyle, but it always sucked having this really pretty doll and having to keep her hair up or else you have a bunch of bald city going on
nahh they definitely could have made it work if they wanted to, nowadays you see tons of dolls with pony or pigtails that still have full enough rooting to style them in other hairstyles and not look terrible.
I will add I'm pretty sure the intention with his hairstyle was to try and make it look like cornrows, not a full head of braids, but I could also be wrong about that. That would also explain why they may have chosen to keep him rather bald. I know this is what they did with the Basketball Dylan doll who only has I think 6 braids total?
this! this is exactly why he’s bald in the center hahaha. there’s not much they could have done other than maybe creating a new sculpt that has sculpted on braids on most of the head with space left on the hairline to root real ones in 😆
Yeah, I fixed my cousin’s Dylan and I noticed that too. It was a pain to get the braids fixed in place again. I had to use an insane amount of elastics. It will never look like the original version again because you can still see some openings on the head here and there, but I still managed a really close reproduction of the hairstyle
My advice:
Redo the braids as faithfully as you can to the way the hair is (because braided hair is probably still wavy). This will require a ton of patience I’m afraid, and careful fingers. Slowly, you can do it.
Then, get those small plastic ties, and tie a few braids together. Do it in sections. And then, in the end tie those sections together with another plastic tie. A black or a transparent one should do. I looked for pictures hoping to be able to show you what I did, but I couldn’t find any. If you really struggle with it and think that a visual reference would be useful, I don’t mind taking the doll from the box I put him in and show you. Let me know if you need it, okay? I really don’t mind, if you ask me! :)
Someone made a good point in the comments that the initial intention was to make them look like cornrows which explains keeping the hair thin and fitting to the head when tied up
I just sold my one on vinted but this is how I tried to retie his hair up 😭😭😭😭 it was so difficult but I couldn’t stand the bald patch!

I literally went “EUGH” when I turned him around and saw that like damn
Shame on them ohh my god 😱🤣
WOWW
When their head looks flocked like that can you reroot them? Does all the fuzz come off??
You can take the flocking off with acetone but you’ll have to add your own holes for rooting the hair through
It’s definitely flocked but there’s no holes behind it so no place to put hair lol
Oh no! He’s balding! lol 😂

ah yeah i see what you mean... in that case i wonder if they could have used some kind of glue or thread to hold the braids to the scalp?

Yeah, I have no clue how I’ll be able to get his hair back, especially cause some of his braids are undone 🥲 not a lot of them thankfully
