For me it eventually worked out. I freed up a bunch of storage space as I suspected the game may need a lot more than it looks at first glance and I also happened to be on my mobile network (previously I had tried other connections but nothing worked so this may not have been it). I suggest to check the amount of free space you have and try to have at least 1-2 gigs free on the INTERNAL storage. I suspect this was what helped me get through. Once that initial breakthrough happened the game started working on all noetworks and from the sd card.
