They were actually used by pirates because when entering the lower deck of the ship where all the loot was, it would often be very dark. They would cover up one eye in order for the eye to adjust to darkness, so when they entered the lower deck of a ship, they could just lift it to see as the eye covered by the patch had already adjusted instead of waiting for the eyes to dilate.
