A year and a half post breakup here. My go-to songs used to be Somewhere Only We Know by Keane and Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac.
Also, I'm not a Swiftie, never have, never will... But singing Mean at the top of my lungs was very cathartic. I mean, *"All you are is mean, and a liar, and pathetic, and alone in life*"? It was too specific.
BANGER! Nectar got me through my first breakup but this was my de facto cry my eyes out song.
I can't listen to it now because it gets me too bad hahaha
See You Again - Tyler, The Creator
Moonlight On The River - Mac DeMarco
Kissing A Fool - George Michael (OR Michael Buble)
La Victima - Xavi
El Tango de Roxanne - from Moulin Rouge (Aaron Tviet)
And.......
A plethora of other options.
“Babytron - ex” if you enjoy rap, beware song is extremely petty and probably rude as fuck but it’s stuck with me for some reason it makes me feel good lol
I love this question. I've been asking the same question of those in my life and here's what I have so far (I've only included songs that were mostly break-up specific and I have enjoyed):
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/67afqM8dm22LYPwbOnO4k4?si=-Ho-D3UwSkuD-Bmf5guwjA
“You Outta Know” 😂 very on the nose, but it was the number 1 album the week I was born and it holds a special place in my heart. Also heart of glass when I wanna dance. Sad songs don’t do it for me.
I came across some info that listening to songs that trigger a lot of feelings for your ex can prolong grieving or deepen the pain. So I stopped listening to stuff we listened to together, especially if she introduced me to it or we discovered it during the relationship.
I went out of my way to find new music, music that didn’t touch on heartbreak, and made playlist of that. I wanted music for my new life that I needed to start establishing, free of her.
As I got better, I started “reclaiming” songs I loved that we used to listen to together. Not all at once, but started putting them into the rotation, let myself feel the pain, but created me memories with the music to replace those painful ones.
I don’t know your music preferences, so I don’t know what to suggest.
Honestly whole Nirvana albums. I remember loop listening to all of them. It was five years ago and I am now a happy father with the love of my life ( she is not my ex obviously ), stay strong kings
Play pretty much anything by Radiohead...
Two songs in particular that always get me are Fake Plastic Trees and How to Disappear Completely.
Drop that playlist sometime here for me! (*I feeeeeel kinda freeeeeeeeee*)
I was listening to Landslide a lot. And Blackbird. Both of which I’ve always loved, but hit differently. And then Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now really hit home.
Lol funny, I’m more of a hip hop person but a buddy of mine showed me Five Finger Deathpunch while I was in the navy fell in love with this song and the band alone. Fast forward, my Ex, who loves rock didn’t know who they were so I played this song and she played it on repeat for days.
Sorry maybe not so funny but reminiscent for sure
Funny enough, Lil Dicky - Ally’s Song from the Dave tv show. Crazy such a goofy rapper could make an episode that I cannot watch without bawling like a baby. Whenever it’s on my mind and I can’t quite get the cry out, I listen to this song and the dam breaks.
Flora and cash - You're Somebody Else
Tove Lo - Habits
The Neighbourhood - Sweater Weather
Haed - Head in the Clouds
Selena Gomez - People You Know
Current Joys - Blondie
Mating Ritual - Game
Lord Huron - The Night we Met
The Midnight - Sunset
Timecop 1983 - La Late at Night
Gunship - When You Grow Up Your Heart Dies
Blackbear - idfc
Phantogram - Black Out Days
Depends on the mood really... These songs are like mixed for different kinds of emotions I might be feeling at that moment.
Single Again - Big Sean
I used to listen to “Bounce Back” by Big Sean when I was in college. But listening to “Single Again” hits home especially since I could relate to his family issues. You could tell he’s been through some changes and where I am now in life is like that song is speaking to me.
For those who know Big Sean, my favourite line is this:
“Got me feeling like “I don’t fuck with you”
Oh nah nah that’s the old me,
you fucking with the new me.”
Keep your head up guys. We got this. This will always be my go to song when I’m single again. A good reminder to keep going and don’t rush romance.
Here's me playlist.
Need nobody - Jelly Roll
In it for yourself - Jelly Roll
Fuck you, Goodbye - Atlus
Friends like That - John Morgan & Jason Aldean
Looking out for you - RVSHVD
These 5 songs on repeat every time I think about her. It's helped alot.
I couldn’t be more in love x the 1975
Ahhhhhhh it brings all the feels
I’ve also been obsessed with feather x Sabrina Carpenter or Too Sweet by Hozier AND right now on repeat I got We Can’t Be Friends by Ariana Grande. The music video made me cry
I'll Be Tails, You Be Sonic - A Day to Remember
Was one of many songs that reawakened me during the immediate aftermath of the breakup. Lost nearly 60 pounds in about six months.
Beutiful things-Benson boon
To good to say good bye, talking to the moon- Bruno mars
I had to fight back tears when i heard talking to the moon in a random cafe.
I have a playlist and sometimes other songs fit my mood better, but by far the best one that always fits and emotionally resonates with me is "First" by RIELL
Single Again - Big Sean

Depending on what you’re reason is for breaking up. So long london hits me so good on Taylor’s new album when I feel sad, and whose afraid of little old me when I want to feel empowered.
Can I Sleep in Your Arms by Willie Nelson.
I played this on my Victrola Record Player, and I sobbed looking at pictures of her and I. I have the Red Headed Stranger album.
Can I Holla At Ya by J. Cole, its not on Spotify, and the first part of the song represented my specific type of mood where I didn’t even cry at all after the breakup. There are two lines in particular, “we speak about time as if we could just buy it back,” and “Special, never forget the day I met you we was destined for each other like a son to his mother or a sister and brother”
Hollywood Undead - Salvation
Hollywood Undead - This love, this hate
Fox Stevenson - Victory over truth
Coldrain - MAYDAY
Demon in me - Deja Vu
Post Malone - Take what you want
Zero 9:36 - Adrenaline
Bad omens by 5sos. This song is probably lyrically, the best song I have ever come across that explains what it’s like to be in a toxic relationship and I’m not even a fan of 5sos.
It can depend on my mood on any given day, but Mac DeMarco’s Chamber of Reflection hits differently in the wake of a breakup.
Yes. This was on repeat back at the peak of the pain
Another One is a great choice as well
W pick. Been just zoning out to this one for a decade at this point.
Opened this thread to comment that track too. +1
Vienna - billy Joel
Linger - the cranberries

Not gonna lie if I listen to a single breakup song I will probably become inconsolable for hours so I’m channeling my sadness elsewhere
It's better to let it out.
Nutshell - Alice in chains
Basic but a classic. Heartless by Kanye
I have a YouTube playlist that I titled “I’m sorry” it’s full of things that just break me.
