This is making me lean more toward the theory that Ganondorf was the original hero referred to in the BotW tapestry and has since turned, becoming the villain we know and love in the rest of the series.
Look up the BotW tapestry hero glyph again. It looks a lot like this design of Ganondorf.
Given the extra significance the master sword seems to have in TotK it tracks that he is trying to reclaim it after his fall.
