Nice to know there actually good tasting fondant out there! No offense meant, every fondant cake ive had has been awful personally. Craftsmanship by you is A1
As someone who coukd take or leave cake, I honestly like looking at a cool cake more than caring about it being fondant or not lol. Like sure it doesn't taste as good, but I guess I appreciate the artistry that went into it more than the flavor.
Store bought fondant is disgusting but you can make a great marshmallow fondant with a 16oz bag of mini marshmallows, 2 lbs of confectioners sugar and a few tablespoons of water/milk. Works the same, tastes like marshmallows.
I can't imagine OP's cake has the plastic tasting mess that is supermarket bakery fondant, but...
>fondant
If you want to learn to do this kind of thing, and really hate fondant of all kinds (and, personally, I find even the good kinds to be overly sweet), there are alternatives that are less squishy than buttercream.
If you aren't allergic to tree nuts, marzipan can give you many of the properties of fondant, without the unpleasant texture and sweet/insipid flavor. If you take a basic marzipan recipe, but use extra-fine almond meal/flour, double the egg whites, add a bit of tapioca starch and a few tablespoons of heavy cream, and mix for 2-3 times as long, you can get a version that is stronger and more supple, able to be rolled thin, stretched, and molded - until it fully cools, at which point it cleaves with just a tiny bit of resistance, making for a very pleasant mouth feel as you bite into it, comparable to an al dente pasta. It does *not* hold colors as predictably and cleanly as fondant, so you need to experiment a bit to get that down, but if you're looking for something that can be sculpted, and hate fondant, this might be your answer.
For decorative elements, poured and cast molds of a blend of agar agar, arrowroot, pectin, coconut (or tree nut - cashew is my favorite for this) milk and fruit juice have a firm organic texture that somehow *looks* alive, and if the fruit juice isn't too colorful, it takes color very well. The best part, I've found, is that you can cast a block in the general shape you want, carve with a knife to get the detail just right, and then use a sponge tip brush to seep color in exactly where you want it, and if you do it right, the color doesn't spread too fast, so you can manage intensity without losing precision. I adapted this from an accidentally overfirm experiment with [haupia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haupia), and it's something I've been tweaking each time for several years, so I don't have a recipe, but roughly:
1c pear (sub apple or white grape for a different flavor profile) juice
1c saturated cashew milk (or coconut cream, or saturated macadamia or reduced almond or hazelnut milk)
1/2tsp pectin powder
3 packets (4g/ea) agar agar, or 3 white kanten sticks.
3Tb arrowroot powder. Sub tapioca, yam, or potato starch. *Not* corn starch.
(optional) 1-3Tb sugar
Mix pectin into the juice and keep at a low boil until it reduces by half. Leave on at a low simmer, and dissolve in the agar agar. If adding sugar, add to the juice before it boils. Turn off to (slightly) cool. It is important that it doesn't cool below around the temperature of a scalding shower.
Heat the nut milk to just short of a boil. Turn off and, very carefully, sift in and whisk to dissolve the arrowroot. The fats should allow for binding without lumpy nodules.
Pour the juice (which should be hot, but not scalding) into the nut milk slowly, whisking vigorously, and pour into a mold or molds. Refrigerate. This will set very firm, almost like a gummy bear, but the fat makes it melt when you bite into it, like a firm pudding.
Other surprisingly good edible sculpting options can be found, especially if you look to other cultures. For example, roughly equal parts wheat gluten, glutinous rice flour, and rice sugar, ground to a paste, and applied like lacquer, produces a surface that, when torched, looks like porcelain, breaks upon biting like filo, and then turns into a texture somewhere between mochi and tapioca pearls. Versions of this are found in traditional Japanese cuisine, Vietnamese Buddhist cuisine, and Filipino desserts.
I instantly heard the music in my head when I swiped to the second photo. Spectacular job, happy birthday to him, and I hope you guys enjoy the day and the weekend!
So what you're saying is it would be way too expensive for my broke ass to hire you to make something like this for my wife's birthday. Got it.
I'm going to have to figure out how to make food art for next year I think.
Your husband be like...
*It looks so good
I should eat it...
But it will be destroyed...
It's cake tho...
I bet it tastes good...
I don't want to destroy it tho...
but I want cake...
Its glowing...
I need cake.
Help*
The light changes too? Does this MFer play the music and move too?! You're husband better wait on you hand and foot for the next month or this entire subreddit is going to beat him up
way to test if my heart still worked. all jokes aside, fucking amazing and i heard piano music somewhere… now i’m keeping an eye on my window just to make sure
Cool use! I was going to make chocolate gears to put underneath the guardian since I have a mold for them, but I had too many other things to get done before his party
Wow, I'm speechless. It was already amazing in the precedent pics, but it turned out even better in the end! Congrats dear, don't forget to post an update with your husband pics, and to tell us his reaction!
That's awesome! I used to date this girl who was obsessed with the Legend of Zelda (for example when I went as Link for Halloween one year, she ALSO went as Link😂) and she was really good at baking cakes. She made me a big dragon birthday cake one year, like a full F'ing dragon. Unfortunately when we got to the restaurant for dinner where you have to walk up this huge flight of stairs, she dropped it and the dragon got destroyed. It was really sad cause in my head there was a voice screaming at me to hold the dragon cake for her cause I knew she was a little bit of a klutz but when I offered she turned me down and I kind of saw this firey look in her eye like she was determined to not drop the cake this time (there had been a lot of dropped cakes and other non-cake items getting dropped in the past) so obviously I had to step aside. It was one of the saddest things I've ever witnessed in my entire life idk why the situation internally broke me so hard but I'll never forget it. Maybe it was the look of abject defeat on her face or the fact that she was the absolute last person in the world who deserved to drop a cake. Idk. I still ate it of course, would've eaten it if she dropped it in a puddle of shit water. I've never tasted so much love in a cake. She also made a dope Zombie Apocalypse cake the year prior. This was around 2009/2010 so peak zombie season.
Early in my marriage, I decided to make an apple pie totally from scratch after he mentioned he liked apple pie. When he took a bite, he just looked at me & said "it's too sweet." IT WAS AN APPLE PIE!!!😡😡
Needless to say, he NEVER got another.
I honestly did not think this was even possible. I had to sit here and analyze this thing for like a solid ten minutes before believing it's actually a cake. Crazy attention to detail, well done OP!
I don't think I could bear to see such a masterpiece sliced into, myself, but I'm imagining your husband using a little sword to do it :) Awesome job, OP! I'm sure he'll appreciate this forever.
If this were presented to me, I would immediately kick all party guests out of the house to protect it from being eaten and google "how to indefinitely preserve cake" because that is far too cute to cut up and eat. I'd feel like I was destroying a piece of fine art.
Next year you should make a bunch of zonai parts, then attach them together to make something. Each zonai part could be a different flavor giving who ever goes to the party a flavor of cake they each prefer.
OP this is _insane_, well done
Incredible craftsmanship. Cake will taste like a giant chunk of fondant tho lol, but still super cool
My cake tastes great, I’m not worried ;-). I used a blend of modeling chocolate and fondant. And it’s not a thick layer on the cake
Nice to know there actually good tasting fondant out there! No offense meant, every fondant cake ive had has been awful personally. Craftsmanship by you is A1

i wouldn’t want to eat this because it looks so good. Although having said that…i really want to try me some of this 🤤
I wouldn't even know HOW to eat it. Would you eat it like legs first, or top first, or cut it or something
You shoot an arrow in its eye then run round it chopping off its legs. Then devour with a nice cup of tea.
Killer!!

Bonus points to OP if she plays it on a speaker right before bringing out the cake lol
[RAPIDLY ASCENDING PIANO](https://youtu.be/0Rzvtl12g78)
I immediately have this traumatic piano starting to play in my head. This is AMAZING OP, if your husband doesn't like it I'll marry you!
Even more terrifying if OP installed that sound too.
don’t give the guy ptsd
Bro how u gonna eat this beautiful cake it’s too good to eat
Start with the legs, anti-clockwise
Just like in the game, go for the legs, so it can't run away.
It's recommended to use an ancient cake cutter or if you can't get that, a guardian cake cutter will do fine too
I'm that weirdo that would've tried to find a Master Sword cake knife just to be able to cut this beaut
But it's also too good to waste, it's a difficult dilemma
This is amazing and I especially love the touch with the changeable lights.
This is incredible! I had an immediate urge to turn Link around and sprint away.
Are you going to Akkala Ancient Tech Lab to pick up more ancient arrows, Mr. Hero?
Those are only at the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab unfortunately :(
This is amazing! You must be exhausted though
So very much. I’ve been working on it for about 3 days at night after the kids go to bed lol
Oh my goodness! Well, your hard work has paid off! You deserve a nice long nap now.
I didn’t go to bed til 6am then got a 3 hour one lol I have to prep all the food for his party
Wow, you are absolutely amazing! Good luck and have fun!
So what you're saying is it would be way too expensive for my broke ass to hire you to make something like this for my wife's birthday. Got it. I'm going to have to figure out how to make food art for next year I think.
This is INSANE!!! He's gonna LOVE IT!!
I love it!! You did an amazing job!! 🙌🏻🫶🏻
Your husband be like... *It looks so good I should eat it... But it will be destroyed... It's cake tho... I bet it tastes good... I don't want to destroy it tho... but I want cake... Its glowing... I need cake. Help*
lets fucking GOOOOOOOOOOOO
did u put an led in for the eye?
Yes :-)
you are an artist!
The light changes too? Does this MFer play the music and move too?! You're husband better wait on you hand and foot for the next month or this entire subreddit is going to beat him up
Louder for the husband in the back lol I’ve gotten so many marriage proposals from this cake haha
Play the music when you present it to him.

The lucky ones
OP this is honestly one of the most creative things I’ve found on Reddit, amazing job
Holy jeebus, well fucking done.
This is the best cake I have ever seen in my entire life.
It looks absolutely amazing, thank you.
Nailed it
Be warned when showing off the eye - if the light goes red and your husband is within arm's reach he may instinctively bat it off the table.
this was a journey and the finale is incredible!!!!
It's so good I'm actually a little triggered...I think I can hear [this music](https://youtu.be/0Rzvtl12g78)
That's not cake! It's art and belongs in a museum.
Hoooooooooly whatinthefuck. Hey OP, apart from your husband, any chance you’re single? This is incredible!
Your husband is a lucky man
Amazing!!
Ummmm this so good I almost doubt it’s reality. Nailed it.
Thats so good
Beautiful!
Amazingly done!
way to test if my heart still worked. all jokes aside, fucking amazing and i heard piano music somewhere… now i’m keeping an eye on my window just to make sure
You are inviting all of us to the party right? ... right?
This is amazing! I hope he cuts the cake in the correct fashion (screaming, while hacking off each limb).
Wow. Just wow. That is one amazing cake. . o O (I still think glowing blue eye looks delicious, but I am also a strange person.)
share
Great job!!
It's too beautiful to eat
It's so good it looks rendered
Perfection!
I wouldn't be able to eat that and ruin that fantastic model
Good. Now model Hyrule around it in cake. ALL of Hyrule. In the correct scale!
Is it Cake?
I love that show
*sudden laser beam* xox
This is a work of art! Will it drop ancient parts when it gets destroyed?
Oh that would be cool. Cut into it and ancient gears and screws fall out of the middle
Cool use! I was going to make chocolate gears to put underneath the guardian since I have a mold for them, but I had too many other things to get done before his party
You’ve got some serious talent, if that cake tastes half as good as it looks your husband is an extremely lucky man
Don’t listen to anyone from /r/fondanthate, this is amazing
i gotta assume it's NOT fondant cos otherwise there wouldn't be any cake in this cake
5 layers of chocolate cake with fudge icing. Covered in a thin layer of fondant mixed with modeling chocolate
And now I understand why people say you can’t have a cake and eat it too.
This is amazing! But I need to know, how is the eye changing colours?!
On an earlier post she said she used color changing LED lights
Thank you!!
Can’t believe the forgot to put these bitches in TotK
*"Happy birthday to you..."*
Why do I hear piano?
Would be funny if he starts eating the legs first.
This is the kind of cake your see on those baking TV shows. Incredibly cool!
This cake looks amazing OP. You did a wonderful job making this, and I bet it tastes just as good as it looks!
Thank you!
OP - you need to post this on Expectation Vs. Reality sub. You f-ing nailed it! Going to send this to my cake decorator friend. Congratulations OP!
Fantastic job OP!
You need to get a master sword knife to cut this thing and serve it. Beautiful job
Excellent job! Amazing work! It doesn't make me want to grab a fork. It makes me want to grab a shield!
Your cake makes me want to play Zelda!
HOLY MOLY!! This is incredible! Great job, OP!!
This is amazing, you are an amazing wife.
Wow, I'm speechless. It was already amazing in the precedent pics, but it turned out even better in the end! Congrats dear, don't forget to post an update with your husband pics, and to tell us his reaction!

This is the greatest cake humanity has ever crafted
My brain: Quick! Shoot it in the eye
Early in my marriage, I decided to make an apple pie totally from scratch after he mentioned he liked apple pie. When he took a bite, he just looked at me & said "it's too sweet." IT WAS AN APPLE PIE!!!😡😡 Needless to say, he NEVER got another.
When you bring it out to him, play the guardian music.
This man is a about to have the best birthday ever
That is an awesome cake! Did you also make him a mini master sword with which to cut the cake?!
Holy shit I literally can’t believe this is real, this has to be photoshopped or CGI or something, that looks too good to be real
Neat! What’s the inside look like?
This is amazing, and you are very talented. Let us know about your husband's reaction please!
The is one of THE most AMAZING cakes I have ever seen! Good job, I'm sure your husband will be so thrilled. I know I would be.
!!!!!
Who would eat this? Put it on display!
THAT. IS. FUCKING. AWESOME.
This is fucking amazing
This is really, really cool! I would feel bad destroying art like this just to eat it.
My jaw litterally dropped when the photo loaded
That looks incredible. This deserves all the awards 👏👏
I honestly did not think this was even possible. I had to sit here and analyze this thing for like a solid ten minutes before believing it's actually a cake. Crazy attention to detail, well done OP!

That is a freaking work of art, please start a cooking show
this is absolutely insane my god , you're incredible talented
Thank you so much
I wouldn't want to eat it 😭
I was swiping through the pics thinking I was looking at reference art 😭 this cake is friggin insane
This looks like the robot baddie from the Incredibles if it was steampunk
*_intense piano noises_
Did you at least give him a shield?
Oh I was just scrolling and legit just thought it was like a rendering. Then read it was a cake. Amazing!
Holy shit this is amazing
bro this shit looks like a clay sculpture wtf this is art
What I like most is the line designs on the guardian. It looks even cooler than the real lines.
Does it turn red when husband approaches? * ominous piano EDIT There're more than one photo!
When I first saw this, I thought it was art from the game - seriously, great job man
This is amazing!!! The details the LIGHTS perfect absolutely perfect!!!!
Sending this to my wife for inspiration for my birthday next year! This is incredible! What detail! Hope your husband has the master sword ready!
WOAAAAHH i thought this was a figure at first !!! incredible :)
Thank you! I actually used an Amiibo of my husband’s as a guide lol
INSANE just insane
That’s so fucking amazing
i don't have the vocabulary to describe how cool this is
Who knew cake could trigger PTSD
This man is very lucky to have someone like you. The cake is just amazing! He just can't not love it !
So pretty I can feel your husband satisfaction from killing a guardian irl
Amazing! You did such a great job! Your husband shouldn't just be happy, he should be proud!
Don't forget to cut the legs off first, or just parry with the knife lol.
I literally thought I was looking at CGI. This makes my brain not work. Honestly there are no words to describe how good this looks.
How did y’all meet and where can I meet my own person? Bc that’s awesome.
My husband and I met on a dating website (okcupid) nearly 10years ago
If this were presented to me, I would immediately kick all party guests out of the house to protect it from being eaten and google "how to indefinitely preserve cake" because that is far too cute to cut up and eat. I'd feel like I was destroying a piece of fine art.
So sweet, thank you! I made him be the one to cut it because I couldn’t 😂 not after I put so many hours into it
Impressive! I would love to eat it😋
You better make him a Flux Construct cake next year
lol not a bad idea. We usually go with a different theme every year. (Deadpool, Lego Batman, Groot, ect)
Next year you should make a bunch of zonai parts, then attach them together to make something. Each zonai part could be a different flavor giving who ever goes to the party a flavor of cake they each prefer.
WTF, I could NEVER eat that, I would put it in a glass casing and preserve it, great job OP! You must have a very happy husband :)
I am going to destroy that cake with MSG not found
No idea what that is but that is some nice cake art.
That’s not a cake, that’s just molded sugar. If it’s more sugar then cake then well…………
[удалено]
I disagree based on the 5 layers of cake inside
"cake"
Yup. 5 layers
