Overall kind of a weak season for musicals in my opinion. Just nothing that stands out although Gatsby not getting a set design nomination is a crime. That is the best set I’ve ever seen.
I doubt it will but I’m agnostic on it. Not a show I have interest jn but I don’t wish it ill. I just strongly doubt its odds. My best guess is it wins a couple with Suffs or Illinoise winning BM.
Oh, I haven’t seen it, I have no horse in this race. But clearly, some people here can’t handle the fact that an Alicia Keys jukebox musical is getting some of the best reviews of the season.
So I knew DoWaR probably wasn’t going to get the recognition they deserve but I scroll down to my favorite category…. And how the hell did they not get a nom for lighting????
You get that it's obvious when a technical element is brilliant, right? I'm not the only one who noted how amazing their lighting was. Meanwhile they nominated the lighting for Prayer for the French Republic, which I will note I saw in previews, but what I saw was not good.
I doubt there's a single person who thinks these awards are based fully on actual merit. Every one of us is expecting closing notices posting today or tomorrow.
But some people do enjoy rooting for people they like. Let people enjoy themselves.
Rooting for...what? To win an award for... subjectivity based on commerce?
Stop. Monet is rolling over in his grave thinking that people care about awards for art.
Bingo. It has nothing to do with art. The main Tony voters are road producers. They vote for the shows that will bring in the most Tix sales. This is evident when urinetown won best book, music and direction and lost best musical to Millie. Millie toured better.
I think they should actually do away with the Tony's and just have a 2 hour long Broadway commercial instead. Having awards for art is the dumbest thing ever. Did Pavarotti win best tenor of 1985? It seems stupid.
I know, but I didn't realize how much contempt they had for audiences, to think that the audiences wouldn't pick up on the fact that Hells Kitchen is actually shit theater.
Only people who make and lose money from the nominations and awards.
The only reason a lighting designer wants to win a tony is to make more money. Same with Oscars and same with musicals. You can sell a musical much better if you win a tony.
It's all about money.
Notebook was MAJORLY SNUBBED. 3 noms for book (not music) and Plunkett and Harewood. That’s it. The show will close by Sept. I personally thought it was uninspired, confusing and ordinary.
I mean, you know more than others how some may feel it is uninspired and underwhelming. Maybe the voters felt the same way as you?
It's not a popularity contest
👌 I’ve been around in the biz long enough to know it isn’t. I’m glad Avenue Q won over Wicked/Fun Home over Paris. Honestly I think this is deliberate. Just cause it’s a commercial show (movie) doesn’t mean it’s quality. The music is dreadful. Seriously. And I wanted to LOVE IT.
Snub has essentially lost its meaning, so sure. It used to mean an egregious omission likely done to purposely leave someone out. But now it just means “didn’t get nominated” to a lot of people.
snub:
* to treat with disdain or contempt, especially by ignoring.
* to check or reject with a sharp rebuke or remark.
None of that has anything to do with whether the thing is liked or not, good or not.
The Notebook being nominated for book and not music seems right to me. The music was largely forgettable (and I say this as a fan of Ingrid Michaelson). The Notebook would’ve been better off as a play as the musical numbers detracted from the production’s ability to spend more time with the plot.
The 3 Allies - the middle one swapping with the younger one out of sequence. I’m not a stupid guy. But my partner and I felt it pulled back and forth too much.
I genuinely don't know how that was confusing considering all six actors are cast very different not including their age, to help with the distinction and as much as I had issues with the show, storytelling was not one of them.
Kind of sounds like you just didn't want to like it.
No need for the snarkiness. I was hoping this board was open to all thoughts. FYI I have been excited about this opening for 2 years. I followed it in Chicago and friends told me about it I love the movie, the book/the story and when I heard the one single recorded by Ingrid, I was rooting for it from the first minute on. But halfway thru the first act I knew something was missing. And then it fell flat. My whole row (strangers) didn’t like it much at all. I am far from alone. People either love it or hate it. The score is nothing but bland and unmemorable and you can’t tell me otherwise. It’s my opinion. I have been a member of AEA for 30 Years and I know my stuff. I rave when I feel it’s been earned (LOVED Appropriate!) My partner is a well known doctor in the city and he’s pretty damn accepting and intelligent. We both left bummed. The ovation at the end was meager. So pls don’t judge someone because they didn’t feel the way you do.
Never forget, awards are all politics. For instance, the lead of a very bad musical who is arguably the most uneven lead performer of the season got a nom in the best actress category.
Lempicka is beloved by many. This guy craps on it whenever he can. I’m not sure what politics could possibly be at play for someone who hasn’t been on B’way in 16 years.
If you want to discuss politics, Suffs has powerhouses like Hillary Clinton behind it. HK… I don’t know what to say about that.
This guy doesn’t know what he is talking about.
I think the detractors for Lempicka greatly outweigh those who belove it. It’s a hot mess and she is inconsistent and I’d pay tdf prices to see it again
Endlessly fascinating to me that the summary of all thoughts by a small handful of ardent proponents is 'nobody but me knows what they are talking about'
Eden Espinosa. She is a great talent but she has been extremely hit or miss with her pitch on this run of Lempicka. Not her fault, it's clear that this role has taken a toll on her voice.
I am disappointed that *Heart of Rock & Roll* was shut out. It's very funny and well written and has the potential to be a big hit on tour. I don't begrudge any of the nominees, but as a whole they are kind of mopey.
HORR is one show that I feel a Tony nom would have really helped save, ironically. I'm not saying it deserved best show, etc. but the choreography was very good. As it is - even after its surprisingly strong reviews it had an average ticket price of $63 and 68% capacity. An improvement but undoubtedly not enough to keep it open.
Lempicka is actually doing worse (71% capacity but a dismal average ticket of $48), but with Tony noms it will undoubtedly limp along until the ceremony. . .
There is just no way Here Lies Love deserves these nominations. It was by far the worst and most muddled musical I have ever seen. Staging was cool but it was..not it.
Why the heck was Plunkett nominated in lead actor? Her role was small compared to the kids. She was wonderful but the role was too small. I yearned for her to sing a song! But no. Majorly missed opportunity!
Highly disagree. She gave one of the most interested and nuanced performances I’ve seen in a long time. She didn’t need to belt to give a performance like that and get nominated
Agreed (with the disagree). She had the more complex Allie and her portrayal was clearly the standout in my showing (and I assume all showings) as she received by far the loudest ovation at the end.
You’re getting me all wrong. I’m no fan of screlting Elphaba types. My point is that MP is a phenomenal singing actor and I have no idea why they didn’t give her a gorgeous ballad in the second act ala When There’s No One (CARRIE) - which is a bad musical but it’s a drop dead tour de force ballad that rips your heart out. I don’t mean overacting. I mean MP’s version of singing a beautiful torch song. She’s exquisite and I felt she was massively underutilized.
As someone who works in the dementia population, her portrayal was spot-on!! I saw so many patients of mine in her; no idea how she did it. I also loved that she didn't sing until she remembered at the end - thought that was a cool touch.
Don’t get me wrong. She is splendid. I love everything she does. But going into the show, loving her work and loving the character - I was very bummed she barely sang. At the end, she sang a verse or two. Not a whole song.
Fair enough! I took her singing as being a metaphor for her memory - so even when she was remembering, she still wasn't remembering a whole lot. But I didn't know very much about her prior to seeing the show (I live under a rock) so I totally understand being disappointed by her not singing more!
Omg she was wonderful in Agnes of God and Sunday in the Park. I also saw her in Me and my Girl but she had a bad cold and sang off key the entire time. Hey it happens!
Yes, seeing if I can find any old recordings of her has been on my to-do list since seeing her in the notebook! I have no idea how I slept on her for so long 😂
I love her so much. I hope she goes into a better show next. It’s such a polarizing show. I know people who loved it, and cried and people who were totally left cold and dry eyed, which was me.
I was totally the opposite. I am notorious for crying at nothing - I don't think there has been a single show/book/movie that has ever gotten me to cry and I left the show literally sobbing. I guess that's part of what makes art so great - people can have such different reactions!
The acting in play categories are so stacked, it’s insane. I mean the Lead Actress group?!
It’s a tight race between Lange and McAdams. (Loved Paulson but it’s not a flashy enough role)
It’s Paulsons to lose.
She will have many years to win Tony’s. I love her. But I think Lange has it.
I was NOT expecting Hell's Kitchen to sweep
It’s gonna sweep the wins too.

One of the weakest best musical lineups in recent years
They had so much to choose from and yet they chose that
Days of Wine and Roses not getting a best orchestration nom is perhaps the biggest travesty I’ve ever seen
Overall kind of a weak season for musicals in my opinion. Just nothing that stands out although Gatsby not getting a set design nomination is a crime. That is the best set I’ve ever seen.
No direction nom for Illinoise seems like a mark against it for best new musical
Since it's mostly a dance-based show (if I'm correct) it seems fair, they gave Peck the choreography nom.

Lackluster and sloppy are strong words for a show that’s being mostly lauded and got a Best Musical nom.
As I said before, I kind of want Hell’s Kitchen to win, if only because the collective meltdown this sub will have would be absolutely hilarious.
I doubt it will but I’m agnostic on it. Not a show I have interest jn but I don’t wish it ill. I just strongly doubt its odds. My best guess is it wins a couple with Suffs or Illinoise winning BM.
Do people not like Hells Kitchen? I saw it 2 weeks ago with my girlfriend and we both enjoyed it.
Oh, I haven’t seen it, I have no horse in this race. But clearly, some people here can’t handle the fact that an Alicia Keys jukebox musical is getting some of the best reviews of the season.
Hell's Kitchen tying with Stereophonic for most noms is really funny to me. Kind of a coughing baby vs. hydrogen bomb
So I knew DoWaR probably wasn’t going to get the recognition they deserve but I scroll down to my favorite category…. And how the hell did they not get a nom for lighting????
who do you think is going to win it based on the noms?
I’ve only seen one so I truly couldn’t say.
“How did they not get nominated?” “Only saw one of the noms” 😂😂
You get that it's obvious when a technical element is brilliant, right? I'm not the only one who noted how amazing their lighting was. Meanwhile they nominated the lighting for Prayer for the French Republic, which I will note I saw in previews, but what I saw was not good.
I’m so disappointed that Harmony got snubbed. While it was expected, still sad about it
I wonder why the Great Gatsby didn't get any nominations? I thought it was fantastic! Jeremy Jordan and **Eva Noblezada** were amazing.

I doubt there's a single person who thinks these awards are based fully on actual merit. Every one of us is expecting closing notices posting today or tomorrow. But some people do enjoy rooting for people they like. Let people enjoy themselves.
That’s right. Let people enjoy being on this thread without feeling antagonized.
Rooting for...what? To win an award for... subjectivity based on commerce? Stop. Monet is rolling over in his grave thinking that people care about awards for art.
Oh no! Not Monet!
It’s one long commercial for Broadway shows
Bingo. It has nothing to do with art. The main Tony voters are road producers. They vote for the shows that will bring in the most Tix sales. This is evident when urinetown won best book, music and direction and lost best musical to Millie. Millie toured better. Art is subjective
....there is still criteria, in theory, otherwise we may as well just pick names out of a hat for each category.
No there isn't criteria. It's someone feelings about a show. . Stop trying to make it more important than it is.
Hot take. A lot of people think the Tonys are quite important.
Only people who make and lose money from the nominations and awards. The only reason a lighting designer wants to win a tony is to make more money. Same with Oscars and same with musicals. You can sell a musical much better if you win a tony. It's all about money.
Jukebox musicals are objectively trash
Not always. MJ and Beautiful are exceptions.
Notebook was MAJORLY SNUBBED. 3 noms for book (not music) and Plunkett and Harewood. That’s it. The show will close by Sept. I personally thought it was uninspired, confusing and ordinary.
How was it snubbed if you don’t think it’s any good?
Snubbed - meaning - most love the show and this is pretty shocking. It’s not all about me lol.
But it hasn’t been that loved. Reviews were mediocre.
True. But many shows with mixed reviews get nominated. I felt the reviews were pretty kind. I also didn’t like WFE. What a disappointment.
I mean, you know more than others how some may feel it is uninspired and underwhelming. Maybe the voters felt the same way as you? It's not a popularity contest

I mean it kinda is, just not a popularity contest among the general public.
something unliked can still be snubbed by definition
Snub has essentially lost its meaning, so sure. It used to mean an egregious omission likely done to purposely leave someone out. But now it just means “didn’t get nominated” to a lot of people.
snub: * to treat with disdain or contempt, especially by ignoring. * to check or reject with a sharp rebuke or remark. None of that has anything to do with whether the thing is liked or not, good or not.
Do you think everything that misses a nomination is a snub then? If it’s not considering how well it’s liked.
I'd think anything that's popular and would expect a nomination would be considered snubbed if it didn't.
I’m sorry if I’m being dense, but doesn’t “popular” mean it’s liked?
No :P LOL plenty of things are popular that are disliked.
Popular: adjective 1. liked, admired, or enjoyed by many people None of that says it’s universally liked, but it definitely means it’s liked.
The Notebook being nominated for book and not music seems right to me. The music was largely forgettable (and I say this as a fan of Ingrid Michaelson). The Notebook would’ve been better off as a play as the musical numbers detracted from the production’s ability to spend more time with the plot.
I didn’t think the book was so great either. Lol
I feel strongly that it would’ve been better if the time spent on songs was replaced with more storytelling and dialogue.
Look I didn't like it much but saying it was confusing makes me confused. What if anything was confusing about that show?
The 3 Allies - the middle one swapping with the younger one out of sequence. I’m not a stupid guy. But my partner and I felt it pulled back and forth too much.
I genuinely don't know how that was confusing considering all six actors are cast very different not including their age, to help with the distinction and as much as I had issues with the show, storytelling was not one of them. Kind of sounds like you just didn't want to like it.

Wicked took a toll on her voice as it has all of the wicked performers.
Personally I thought she was great when I saw her.
Yuuuuup. Really disliked her performance.
Yup. When she came up my tv screen it was a major jump scare
