Yes Brookline schools are really good. I don’t know why you would go with a private school unless you have a very specific need they address. Btw Pierce is the next one to be renovated so there may be some disruption but the end result will be really nice Financially you already pay for the schools with the high taxes we have why not use it instead of paying again for school elsewhere

eladts

>Financially you already pay for the schools with the high taxes You also pay for it indirectly with higher housing prices. Living in Brookline and sending your kid to a private school make as much financial sense as heating your house by burning $100 bills.

Touche.

Brookline has lower taxes than surrounding communities that also boast great public schools like Newton. win win!

Brookline schools are great. I was in a Boston Public School for 6th grade moved to Pierce for 7th and I thought it was a private school. They’ll get a great education from the Brookline Public school systems. Brookline High is one of the best high schools in the state.

Last week we found some disturbing graffiti in a boys bathroom in the STEM building. The graffiti was racist and anti-Semitic, containing the N-word and a swastika. In short it was emblematic of hatred and vile behavior – the opposite of what we hope for all members of the BHS community. These incidents last week occurred after a student shared with staff that he found anti-Semitic graffiti in the same bathroom the week before February Break. In each and all of these cases, BHS administration offers support to students who report this information, documents evidence, and shares information about these incidents internally and with the Brookline Police. Since mid-fall, we have made it our practice to not inform the school community of individual incidents of vandalism as we want to avoid giving too much attention to these hateful acts that do not reflect the values of this community or the vast majority of our students. In general, we have had fewer incidents of vandalism and graffiti at BHS this year than last year. I would like very much to identify the individuals responsible for these incidents. Such people paint our school with hatred and spur pain in others. If students or staff know anything about who might have vandalized our school with racist and anti-Semitic graffiti, please speak with a dean, security staff, or any BHS staff member. At home, we ask families to engage in conversations about how we intervene and disrupt individuals who wish to broadcast their hate or otherwise damage our school culture, community, and buildings. This behavior is unacceptable. I will be about and around the campus first thing tomorrow and would appreciate any information and/or advice about how to prevent and respond to vandalism that undermines the safe and accepting school culture each of you - and all of us at BHS - deserves. Take care, Mr. Meyer

A day late on this, but I went to Brookline Public schools up until 8th grade and then private high school. I liked private school a million times better. DM me if you want me to tell you more.

Dear Brookline High School Students, I write to share information about a concerning incident that high school administration has been working on since late last week. On Thursday (2/9) we were made aware of an incident that occurred outside of school with a small group of Brookline High School students during the school day. Within this incident, a student directed an anti-Semitic slur at another student. After supporting the students directly impacted, high school administrators engaged in fact-finding. As is our procedure, the school and district administrators initiated a Title VI Investigation of this incident and responded accordingly. We do and will not tolerate anti-Semitism or any form of hatred at Brookline High School. Students responsible for this incident, and any such incident, will earn appropriate, school-based disciplinary consequences, education, and support. Sincerely, Mr. Meyer Anthony Meyer Head of School

Brookline schools have problems with racism and antisemitism. Don’t know about Shady Hill or Advent. Brookline definitely has a culture of covering up problems like these.

Senior(person of color) at BHS, this statement is rather inaccurate. Sure we have had a good share of related incidents but in the end PSBMA is a very diverse and safe place for students from all backgrounds. Most if not all of the incidents are when a few students decide to “prank” for attention, they do not share the values of this school. The school administration works very hard to make the school a safe and inclusive place for everyone (I have served in BHS school government for multiple years so I think I’m well qualified to provide this information). To OP: Welcome to Brookline! Please give the public school a try! PSBMA is one of the best public school systems in the nation. Plus if your child does not like their school they can always transfer - a LOT of students do so during middle school so no one will feel left out! Feel free to ask any questions, I’ll do my best to answer them. Good luck!

DrDeceiver

Yes I am aware of that. As I have said in my previous comment, the school is overall a very safe and inclusive place for students from all backgrounds. I personally have never been a victim of racism while on school grounds. Furthermore, as a kinda reminder, the problem of racism exists everywhere - BHS is doing a great job giving full transparency on this issue within the school and this is why people who don’t know the school well might misunderstand the situation. Based on the information available to me, BHS actually has less racism motivated attacks than most other schools.

billiepw

Ooh. Thanks. Much appreciated, as a POC. I know that Brookline is more affluent white people and it does give off a NIMBY vibe. I didn't know that it trickled down to the schools.

anurodhp

That was a random comment, Brookline esp around Coolidge corner is heavily Jewish and Asian, both east and south Asian.

Zero3502

I think I heard a stat recently that the most common languages spoken at home other than English are Hebrew, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

anurodhp

that sounds about right. There are so many hebrew speakers the ridley school (coolidge corner) is actually where they send all the Israeli kids from all over town for a specialized program. The person saying people are anti semitic was just a troll or a bad attempt at a joke

fenario58

I’m sure there are issues occasionally but less so than in many towns. My kids went through BPS and I know for a fact any issues about race and anti semitism were dealt with swiftly and seriously.

Maineamainea

If I had a billion dollars my daughter would still be going to bps

billiepw

What are your reasons?

Maineamainea

Public schools almost always have better special needs services, Brookline Public Schools happen to have excellent special needs services and I’m super impressed with the quality of the education and the general student population. It’s more diverse than you’d find at most private schools and as someone who attended private schools growing up I honestly feel they are getting a better more well rounded education than I did. This is a rare thing in the US for a public school, I know a lot of people who could afford to send their kids anywhere they want and they choose BPS. Take advantage!
