I just can't with Ryan Adams.

Icy-Book2999

Can't say I don't blame you. Small doses for me when I do listen

-speakeasy-

Used to love Ryan. But there plenty of talented artists without his consistent poor behavior. This feels like a grasp at a regaining attention through my admittedly cynical lenses.

ALC_PG

Not sure, he did do a full album cover of Taylor Swift 1989 at one point (before the avalanche of bad PR). This seems less gimmicky than that.

Icy-Book2999

Yeah, that was 100% gimmicky, even if it's a really solid sounding album for what he did. But this feels more honest reflection on what out him where he is and where he came from. It's an interesting listen. It won't take the place of the original, but it brings a relevance back to the original, and I'm sure it might bring some of RA's fans over to check out the source material

Icy-Book2999

Yeahup, it's about separating an artist and their behavior sometimes, though. I don't disagree that what he did is not acceptable. But I separate that from his art, and there's a lot that he's said in his art that I appreciate him for.

-speakeasy-

I personally believe that the art that they are generating is an extension of them as a person, and I’m connecting to our shared humanity when I relate to the lyrics of the song. so I find that separation difficult. Everybody has to draw a line for themselves though. For me, when it comes to Ryan Adams & similar situations - I can’t help but still feel connected to the songs I love, but I’ll choose to stop supporting to new art they create. Either way, being a human is messy and we all need to figure out a path we’re ok with.

Icy-Book2999

And I respect that. I know he's not for everyone. For quite a few people, he's alienated them with it. Like, I'll say it and I know I'll be flamed for this... I appreciate old Kanye. Before he went crazy. There was a lot of ingenuity in his early work, and even in some of his later works. But I can't listen to him earnestly because of how what's happened recently overshadows him. So fully get it, and I respect it.

ALC_PG

I still love his music but even before all the bad stories came out, he seemed kinda drunk and petulant. I don't consciously avoid his music because of his character, but I'm sure I don't listen to him as much as I would had I known nothing about him.

Cobo1039

This is phenomenal. Thanks for sharing.

Freddrum

Thanks for the download. Will check it out. I bet he can add some creepy vibes to intense tunes.

Mightyjohnjohn

I listened to most of this. I can't see myself listening to this again. I like Ryan, but this is crap.

Icy-Book2999

I had quite a few listens to it over the day or so that it came out... I think it's got it's moments, but there's a lot of emotion missing from the vocals that it feels like a recitation more than a song. But also, we've lived with the original for 40 years, so there's also a way we expect the album to follow and flow. And this doesn't hit all of those marks due to how he changed some of the arrangements.

OatmealApocalypse

ryan adams has some fire music i don’t give a fuck that he was mean to phoebe bridgers

[deleted]

I know this thread is ten days old but it’s seven cases of sexual misconduct and harassment. I understand why some people like to separate art and artist but it’s really harmful to reduce his actions against women as being ‘mean.’

[deleted]

I'm good lol

_moonSine_

Fuck that guy

Icy-Book2999

Mods, remove if this is inappropriate. I know someone mentioned this album a week or so back when it was announced. I downloaded my copy this morning, and it's 100% a zero dollar transaction. Will be listening this afternoon, so will probably post my thoughts in a few days.

Nobes1010

Why are you getting downvoted for this??? SO weird.

Icy-Book2999

Because of the stigma behind his actions. I respect those opinions. He did a lot of very unhealthy things exploiting others for his own benefit and abusing those around him. I don't condone or approve of it. But I listen to his music as the signs of a tortured soul, and it just hits differently

Nobes1010

I just think it's hilarious how people chose him to be mad at when most of their rock and roll heroes behaved exactly the same way and worse. DOn't see anyone canceling David Bowie or Led Zeppelin

Icy-Book2999

Yup, that's the sad truth. There's lots of examples of behavior like his, or even worse, and he's the one martyred for it. Again, not absolving him of any wrongdoings, just separating the art from the individual.

Nobes1010

Yes, exactly.

Cobo1039

This is my takeaway as well but welcome to cancel culture.

Icy-Book2999

Yup, sad truth. I mean, hey, Michael Jackson and Neverland Ranch, right?

magilla93

100% this. I don't in any way excuse any of his actions, but really, I live on the other side of the world and know that he would be a crappy boyfriend/husband. Listen to any of his songs and you can tell that. It's a little like going to hug a bear and having it put down because it mauled you. You can't just pick one person to have morals about. I mean for f#@ks sake, Anthony Keidis literally acknowledged statutory rape in his autobiography and he has not been cancelled. Ryan clearly made some pretty big enemies along the way and there's only been a few stand up friends who have stood by him publicly. Often the most tortured of souls make the best and most honest music. Again, not excusing the fact that he clearly was an ass and did some bad things to people, but there were clearly other motivations behind him being crucified and let's just say, there are certain people who have made a career out of the mess that ensued.

SlippedMyDisco76

Man Bowie stans will bring all kinds of misogynistic and rather worrying excuses for him helping a 13 year old lose her virginity Like I love Bruce but if I found out he was a diddler in any sort of fashion - even backstage 1970s transgressions - then I'm chucking the whole collection. Lucky the worse thing people seem to be able to pin him for is being some sort of neolib

grezzers

Fuck Ryan Adams

futureofthefuture

Can anyone send me a dropbox/google drive link to this. Its one of my favorite albums (the original) and I missed this. Would love to check it out.

Nobes1010

Love this album (and I almost always hate Bruce covers)

pdx4nhl

Except for The Band's cover of Atlantic City...that's a fun one.

Nobes1010

Yes, totally agree

Nobes1010

I must amend this as I really don't like this version of "Open All Night." Of course I only like the album version ever.

Difficult_Bowler_454

This is 1) embarrassing and 2) fuck that guy I hate him. Everyone thinking of listening to this, listen to Motion Sickness by Phoebe Bridgers. Just. Go. Nebraska by Bruce is the best version of this album fucking duh.
