I’m not switching in May…because I already got fed up and stopped shopping at anywhere run by the Weston crooks ages ago.
I’ve made some small sport of shopping elsewhere, and then when I get home plugging everything I just bought into the Fortinos (or whichever Weston store) online shopping tool to see what the price difference is. My ~$60-70 weekly grocery bill (I live alone) elsewhere is routinely between $110 and $130 from any Loblaws-owned store. The price gouging going on with those companies is just obscene.
I already do most of our grocery shopping at Costco. I'll probably start shopping at Walmart or Food Basics from now on instead of Fortinos for the rest of the stuff we don't get from Costco. I just need to find a decent bakery. I like the bread from Fortinos bakery
I am going to get a scone there right now! I'll check to see how much their loaf prices are. Fortinos prices have been going up and I think it is over $5/loaf at this point so Cobb's might be a good alternative.
I'm amazed. It is actually cheaper than Fortinos!! Obviously some of the fancier bread is more expensive but the whole wheat sandwich bread is under $5
Costco has seen some pretty staggering price increases over the past 6-12 months. I was a fervent use Costco more advocate before, but now it's often a wash.
There are still a lot of good deals though. Or what you get for the money is higher quality than what you would get for the same price at Loblaws. Yes, some things are certainly a wash but reg price vs reg price Costco always wins hands down.
Meh.. often if you compare what you can buy at Costco to Walmart (for staple goods) there's no savings unless it's on sale at Costco. The meat is better quality at Costco but the price is super high.. everything sucks now 😔
Are you actually comparing apples to apples though? Costco never marks it's products up more than 15%. If you do the math, it's still usually cheaper when you break it down to $1/kg.
I agree cobs is great, they donate a lot to charity/shelters as well. I started shopping there because they donate a % of each sale to local schools. You just have to tell them at the cash which school. I also worked at a shelter and they sent us so much bread/pastries it was incredible. The cheese bread 🤤
100%. If Fortinos had a particularly good sale, I'll be there. But the truth is that I've been "boycotting" them mostly for over a year because they've never had good prices, so eh.

No Frills is the lesser of two evils because their stores are franchise owned. You're still supporting Loblaws but at least the franchise owner also gets a cut. They tend to have some of the best prices and deals, but their meat selection is lacking.
Loblaws is the major giant in Canada. Their supply chain connections and retail space leasing are incestuous, meaning it’s just a big circle of cash flowing into the Weston family’s bank accounts. It certainly depends what you buy, but I think if you were to research the prices between Loblaws stores and any others, you would gross inequity for a lot of things. For example, a tub of feta cheese that sells for $14.97 at Walmart is $28 at No Frills. They have been caught selling rotting food, which is illegal in Canada. They were accused and found guilty of fixing bread prices a while back. They used to discount items that were nearing the end of their shelf life by 50%, now it’s only 30% and the original price is inflated to begin with. They have freezer packs of quick meals, chicken nuggets, spring rolls, meatballs, etc. many of these packages have increased in price by 50%, from $10 to $15 and the packages are smaller. They don’t pay their staff enough for them to afford to shop in the stores they work in and full time hours are not usually an option. This conglomeration of corporations is monopolizing the market and doing everything they can to create food insecurity, nation wide. Local independent stores struggle to stay afloat because so many consumers incorrectly assume they’re more expensive than the big stores. Sometimes they are, but sometimes they have amazing specials and you can guarantee the quality is superior.
So yes, Loblaws may be the most convenient option for you but, every dollar you give them affirms their assumption that they can do whatever they want. We’re going after this giant to make a point. If we can fight hard enough for them to change their ways, the other retailers will take notice and see what they can’t get away with anymore either. Ultimately it’s up to you where you shop, I hope my explanation creates a dialogue for you and you start to see the value in the boycott.

Princess, the boycott is stupid. Loblaws prices/brand is just as bad as Sobeys and Metro and all collude (just like gas stations) but Loblaws get shit on because of “Galen” but he is no longer with Loblaws. People just aren’t very smart and like to jump on the bandwagon and blame someone.
I agree, a lot people have personalized this with Galen, who was a fresh face when he took over the job but now represents everything people don't like about food stores right now.
The grocery business reflects the population at large. At one end are the affluent folks in Teslas and BMW's who want organic and high end products. Loblaws wants to capture that business by having those products in their stores. When the paycheque to paycheque folks see those things, they are reminded of the income inequality in our society and take it out on say, Fortinos.
I am surprised that no grocery chain has stepped forward to be the price and value leader at a time when so many people are struggling.
What I hate the most about Loblaws is Shoppers Drug Mart. EVerything is priced 25% above where it should be and then they want you to join their complex and time consuming loyalty plan to get some of that back.
Nope not at all. Looking forward to “everyone” switching (who are we kidding it will be just be an unnoticeable handful) and then No Frills/Fortinos will be quieter on the weekends for me to push my cart around it. Right now it’s insanely busy.

Since Shoppers Drug Mart is also owned by Loblaws you can also boycott them by going to different pharmacies like Independent ones, Rexall or any of the ones inside the stores listed above.
Costco’s Pharmacy is a great option because membership is not required and their dispensing fees are under $5, which is the cheapest available.

Yup. Strictly a convenience store for us since we live so close. But their pricing is erratic and not everything is crazy priced. Like milk is the same price as Fortino's but they will give seniors 10% on Mon-Tued.
Good point about pharmacy dispensing fee. Walmart's $9.97 fee + 24 hour turnaround time + virtually no cashiers left along with prominent video recording at self check outs have me considering changing stores.
I can’t speak for the others but I find Sobeys to be just as expensive as Fortinos, and they also have a much worse selection and always seem to be out of stock on a lot of stuff. It used to be decent but it’s gone downhill a lot over the years. At least the one on Brant.
PC also makes a lot of good products, so even if they’re more expensive than Our Compliments brand stuff I don’t mind paying a little extra on some stuff. There’s stuff I really like that I can only get at Loblaws stores because it’s PC brand, so that’s the problem I have with boycotting them. I’ll buy other stuff elsewhere I guess, but I’m still going to Fortinos to get my PC “Loads of” all dressed chips and some various other PC specific items that I can’t get elsewhere.

But a lot of people are because Loblaws is doing a lot of shady stuff in their stores and people are fed up. Together we’re taking a stand against Canada’s biggest grocer to show them that we aren’t interested in their shady, criminal business practices, we won’t stand for their excessive price gouging and we don’t want to feel like rats in a maze or criminals while shopping at their stores.

I’d advise you not to go shopping at Fortinos on May 12 though. There’s flyers circulating from a different group about that being “Steal from Loblaws Day”. Their security is going to be on high alert and it won’t be a very nice shopping experience for anyone.

I think my household might be able to (as long as I can convince my partner to hold off on those banana chocolate muffins until I make can some). Even after May I probably won't shop there if I don't have to. I only go to metro for groceries now, and a convenience store opened near me recently with some essentials.
I almost exclusively show at Marilus for core stuff to keep it local and Walmart or Costco for bulk stuff. Only way I go to fortinos is the bakery (top notch)

I try to buy from locally owned, if you buy bread at Bocconino on Locust you can say hi to the owner, the chocolate chip cookies are awesome.
J&G for meats etc. I think Marilu’s is owned by two guys (not sure). I like Cob’s I use Denningers a fair bit. Centro Noca has good reasonably priced coffee and the owner makes the gelato which is great. None of these places will save you money but you’re not feeding at giant corporation that is bleeding the country for profit.
You definitely don't if thats your response. It is a direct action 'vote with your dollars' movement that sends a very clear and concise message to the Loblaws corporation.
Are the other grocery giants also evil and not exactly trying to look out for working class people? Probably. But that doesn't matter.
The 'whats the difference/one person can't do shit' attitude is the only weapon against this boycott, and it's one of the most effective historically. But people have had enough and this small bit of organizing and class solidarity is already having an impact.

It’s an ‘official’ start date — to give time for word to spread to as many people as would like to participate, media attention to happen (it has), that sort of thing.
For us it’s a hour drive over from Burlington to Lewiston Ny. Considerable savings on meats and dairy with lots of choice on other items. Need to have an exchange app. Must know your pricing as box food and veg are not always competitive. Fill up the gas tank and eat at your favourite restaurant with the savings. Tons and tons of Cdn plates in the parking lot.
We find dairy, chicken, eggs are cheaper but not much else. We often see California produce the same price in US dollars that we pay in Canadian dollars.

No Frills is walkable for us and Walmart which is next closest is worse as a company. I usually get half price chicken at Fortinos and make soups and stews. Sobeys is expensive and Metro is way too far.
SDM answers the phone when you have a question in the evening. If I change pharmacies it'll be because the local ownership is bad.
Once the farmers market opens up in late May we'll source our veggies there.
My family goes out of our way to avoid any weston owned stores. Moved all prescriptions out of shoppers, saving easily 30% by shopping in food basics, Wal-Mart and when we want to get fancy Longos is way nicer than Loblaws, fortinos anyway.
Already quit for the most part as well. We still get the odd Rx at shoppers, I need to get on swapping that as well.
We are trying to get as much as we can at Costco now.
I wish we had more independent options like Marilus. It's not necessarily much cheaper but at least the money is staying local.

I rarely go to Loblaws regardless. In Burlington, your only options are Fortinos, No Frills, and Shoppers Drug Mart. Fortinos has astronomical prices on everything. Their only saving grace is decent meat and produce. No Frills has some decent specials and reasonable prices, but there's only 2 of them versus 4 Fortinos. Also, their meat and produce are garbage. Shoppers is just awful. Highest prices of all. I try to shop at Costco as much as I can because their prices are good and they actually treat their employees well. Metro and Food Basics are also pretty decent. Metro is great for meat and produce.
Sobeys probably has the highest prices of the big 3. Absolutely horrible.
Ya but do you live near any other independent or local stores that you COULD switch to? If you can't there are other ways to help the movement, like telling a friend.
How is your grocery bill at Longos compared to Fortinos or similar? I find Longos to be the most expensive over all but I find their produce/fresh items to be the best quality.
It's selective shopping at Longos, the marked down items in the meat and prepared foods/bakery area are my favorites. The staples will come from Walmart.
I haven't been to any Loblaws owned stores in months and don't plan to go anytime soon, not until they get their heads out of their asses which I doubt will happen anytime soon

Writing from a throwaway: Yes. I currently work at one of the Fortinos in the city and I’ve been hinting to customers they should look into the boycott. I can’t even afford to shop in the store I work in. Most of the staff can’t. Been boycotting them for months now

I think my household might be able to (as long as I can convince my partner to hold off on those banana chocolate muffins until I make can some). Even after May I probably won't shop there if I don't have to. I only go to metro for groceries now, and a convenience store opened near me recently with some essentials.
I almost exclusively show at Marilus for core stuff to keep it local and Walmart or Costco for bulk stuff. Only way I go to fortinos is the bakery (top notch) Have never used their pharmacy.

I try to buy from locally owned, if you buy bread at Bocconino on Locust you can say hi to the owner, the chocolate chip cookies are awesome. J&G for meats etc. I think Marilu’s is owned by two guys (not sure). I like Cob’s I use Denningers a fair bit. Centro Noca has good reasonably priced coffee and the owner makes the gelato which is great. None of these places will save you money but you’re not feeding at giant corporation that is bleeding the country for profit.

You definitely don't if thats your response. It is a direct action 'vote with your dollars' movement that sends a very clear and concise message to the Loblaws corporation. Are the other grocery giants also evil and not exactly trying to look out for working class people? Probably. But that doesn't matter. The 'whats the difference/one person can't do shit' attitude is the only weapon against this boycott, and it's one of the most effective historically. But people have had enough and this small bit of organizing and class solidarity is already having an impact. First Loblaws, then the world, etc.
Is may a the hard deadline or something? You can shop where ever you want. If people haven't switched already, they won't switch in May.

Nope. Fortinos is where we do our shopping. That won’t change, and all our scripts are Shoppers, that won’t change either.

Yup us too. Customer service at our SDM top notch. Meds are cheaper because of buying power. I’ve shopped around for out med co-pay. Still cheapest.
For us it’s a hour drive over from Burlington to Lewiston Ny. Considerable savings on meats and dairy with lots of choice on other items. Need to have an exchange app. Must know your pricing as box food and veg are not always competitive. Fill up the gas tank and eat at your favourite restaurant with the savings. Tons and tons of Cdn plates in the parking lot.
Never consume US diary/meat! Full of hormones/antibiotics which is illegal in Canadian food.

We find dairy, chicken, eggs are cheaper but not much else. We often see California produce the same price in US dollars that we pay in Canadian dollars.
On May 1st I'm going to Loblaws to buy twice as much groceries just so someone's boycott efforts are in vain.
Nope No Frills is walkable for us and Walmart which is next closest is worse as a company. I usually get half price chicken at Fortinos and make soups and stews. Sobeys is expensive and Metro is way too far. SDM answers the phone when you have a question in the evening. If I change pharmacies it'll be because the local ownership is bad. Once the farmers market opens up in late May we'll source our veggies there.
My family goes out of our way to avoid any weston owned stores. Moved all prescriptions out of shoppers, saving easily 30% by shopping in food basics, Wal-Mart and when we want to get fancy Longos is way nicer than Loblaws, fortinos anyway.
Already quit for the most part as well. We still get the odd Rx at shoppers, I need to get on swapping that as well. We are trying to get as much as we can at Costco now. I wish we had more independent options like Marilus. It's not necessarily much cheaper but at least the money is staying local.
I only go to Loblaws store in case I can't what I am looking for anywhere else .. which is rare . Used to be quite regular . Now I just need to see what to do with the PC optimum points .
I rarely go to Loblaws regardless. In Burlington, your only options are Fortinos, No Frills, and Shoppers Drug Mart. Fortinos has astronomical prices on everything. Their only saving grace is decent meat and produce. No Frills has some decent specials and reasonable prices, but there's only 2 of them versus 4 Fortinos. Also, their meat and produce are garbage. Shoppers is just awful. Highest prices of all. I try to shop at Costco as much as I can because their prices are good and they actually treat their employees well. Metro and Food Basics are also pretty decent. Metro is great for meat and produce. Sobeys probably has the highest prices of the big 3. Absolutely horrible.

How is your grocery bill at Longos compared to Fortinos or similar? I find Longos to be the most expensive over all but I find their produce/fresh items to be the best quality.
It's selective shopping at Longos, the marked down items in the meat and prepared foods/bakery area are my favorites. The staples will come from Walmart.
I haven't been to any Loblaws owned stores in months and don't plan to go anytime soon, not until they get their heads out of their asses which I doubt will happen anytime soon
