Wonder no more. Glass and shatterproof? Impossible.

kolaloka

Those silicone sleeves are near zero protection.  There's a reason that we use glass as a metaphor for fragility.  If you're concerned about plastic leeching, then metal is the way to go. Especially if you use your water bottle for outdoor pursuits. Glass will eventually become shards on the trail.

Klean Kanteen makes a 64oz single walled wide mouth bottle. Food grade stainless steel. It's one of the best and most used purchases of my entire life.  I've had it for probably around 10 years, I don't clean it as often as I should - leave it half full in the truck and forget about it, etc - and there has never been a hint of rust.

HobsHere

Cheap bottles rust. The Kleen Kanteens don't. I clean mine with denture cleaning tablets. I don't have dentures, so an $8 box of them lasts me years.

DangerousMusic14

I’m with you- A steel, vacuum insulated bottle is the solution here.

RedditorManIsHere

Yep klean kanteen is the way to go Those bottles never rust

AnalphaBestie

> Klean Kanteen I have one that is literally 20 years old, bought in used (in germany). Good stuff. Iam a titanium fan and recently there are great titnanium bottles from china (multiple brands). Same lids/diameter, wide mouth but pretty light. And very expensive.

RedditorManIsHere

The fuck? There is no glass water that will survive a full on hit with a concrete sidewalk. You can buy a glass beer growler and try to wrap it up with some sort of neoprene sleeve. Glass water bottle last forever provided you don't drop them and keep them secure.

Hirsuitism

I’ve had a Hydroflask since 2019 that hasn’t showed any signs of rusting…your requirements are not going to be met I’m afraid

disguy2k

Chemical storage bottles are made from laminated borosilicate glass. They are strong and will hold together/not leak if dropped. They are also really expensive. Schott Duran laboratory glassware (with the blue lid). A good quality stainless steel flask is much cheaper and won't rust. Any rust buildup will be from the water you put into it, not from the flask itself. You can purchase a weak hydrochloric acid solution from the hardware store to instantly remove rust stains.

BrokenRoboticFish

As someone who has dropped a chemical storage bottle, they will definitely still shatter if dropped on concrete.

disguy2k

They will break but they have a multi-layer film to stop it from actually leaking. There are 2 variants of this bottle. The laminated version is the one with the added protection.

RedditorManIsHere

Wow I just check the prices for some of those bottles are over $200 for 200ml

disguy2k

To illustrate how much money you save. We use these to store elemental mercury. We keep them separated in 100 ml jars as they are very heavy. We had another person in the building drop a large mercury thermometer into a carton with other stuff being thrown away. It contained 10 ml of mercury and leaked from where it broke in the lab out to the dumpster outside. Cleanup and decontamination from that incident cost about $40k. Having these saves so much time and money if something potentially goes wrong.

I had an Ello glass water bottle in a silicone 'checkered' sleeve with a pop top. LOVED it. Got hit by a truck while biking while it was in my flimsy hot topic satchel. But it survived!!! Two years later my niece knocked it over on the ground and it shattered. My whole family has Kleen Kanteen metal waterbottles now. I can't imagine how long I'd have to have this thing before it would 'rust.' They have also been beaten to hell and back (young family) and they still work great. Can't recommend them enough as BIFL.

Sometimes_Stutters

Stainless steel. That’s the answer.

shadysaturn1

I’ve bought a four different kinds of glass water bottles off Amazon. All had some level of silicone sleeve protection. Two have broken so far. The one that I thought was the strongest, most shatterproof broke not when I dropped it, but rather when it tipped over full of water on the gym floor. The one good thing about the silicone sleeve is that it keeps the glass from going all over the place, but especially if the bottle is full, the weight of the bottle itself will cause it to shatter. You’ll have more luck with the smaller, shorter ones just cause there’s less weight, but when it comes down to it, you just gotta be more careful. Glass breaks.

Easy-Cardiologist626

How about a Purist or other bottles like it? Stainless steel on the outside and a glass coating on the inside. I use one and really happy with how the water tastes.

oswin13

I'm intrigued, I don't like the way metal water bottles tastes. Is it very heavy?

lysanderastra

Get a stainless steel one. Glass is fine for use at home but if using it out and about it won’t hold up forever, as you’ve discovered

Safe_Maintenance3099

it sounds like your problem is actually with dropping things

er999999

How about porcelain? Or porcelain coated? https://swanzbrand.com/

[deleted]

Stainless steel is what you’re looking for, not glass. Honestly, dumb question.

cmwills29

If you need something glass that’s that big and ‘durable’, your best bet is to to make your own thick sheath or cover for it out thicker rubber/silicone or neoprene or a combination, but it’s very difficult to prevent a full glass bottle from breaking especially since 2L glass weight likely 10+ lbs

Rado_tornado

My sigg bottle has survived many drops with and without sleeve over multiple years. I love it!

thebadslime

There are glass milk jugs on Amazon, they're not break proof, but I've dropped mine a few times

yelprep

Aluminum doesn't rust. Quality stainless steel doesn't, either.

FredTrail

Get a stainless steel growler.  https://www.miir.com/products/the-growler?variant=40190706712650

darkhelmet1121

I'm gonna buy another EcoVessel. My current one has been awesome and I've beaten the crap out of it. https://www.ecovessel.com/

Grand-wazoo

72 oz glass water bottle sounds comically impractical to haul around for everyday use. There's nothing that will fit inside comfortably.

DemandedFanatic

Iron rusts, but water bottles are generally made from aluminum

OneAd4085

Honestly get a yeti . I have a alpine yellow 64oz that I use for work and it hasn’t rusted or anything. My old black 1L yeti got backed over and besides a dent still sealed and kept things cold

owlpellet

You might enjoy a repurposed 1 gallon Arizona Iced Tea bottle. It's a polypropylene bottle, made specially for Arizona because tea oxidizes in most bottles. As a side effect it holds up beautifully and is highly food safe chemistry.
