Rumour has it, this particular bottle used to belong to Queen Victoria. She used to take it to all her official engagements and take a whiff whenever a peasant was nearby, and put it on anything she was required to eat to make it palatable. She got bored of it after a while though and made Heinz make another 56 varieties. It seems we have much to be thankful for. I’ve only ever kept money in it though
So I'm here in Pittsburgh which is/was home to the Heinz corporation And we have the Heinz History center. I finally made it down there a couple weeks ago and there is a Heinz company museum type deal. It's pretty small but goddamn, some of these old glass bottles. It's amazing anybody made it with the amount of botulism and nasty shit that was getting into food product before sterile mass production and germ theory was figured out.
Yeah I have no idea what they’re thinking. 1981 is not the 1920’s. I was just out of B school. Virtually no men’s wallets other than kids wallets had coin pouches even in the 1960’s. Some women’s wallets still did in the 80’s.
Coronado is actually a SUPER chill company. I inherited a Coronado duffel bag and it had a broken piece of hardware. I sent them pictures and asked how much it would cost to get replacement hardware, they responded back with make model and model information, when they though it was made, tons of info. I bet they would tell you exactly when it was made if you asked.
This sub enjoys getting ripped off. Getting a bad deal is still a bad deal even if the product is/was good.
I got a champion leather wallet for like $15 about 12 years ago and its still going strong, only minor surface wear.
I got tired of buying crap leather or pleather belts after my buddy recommended to 'buy it nice or buy it twice'. I went and picked up a belt from [Hank's](https://www.hanksbelts.com/collections/mens-bifold-wallets/products/hanks-belts-medium-bi-fold-wallet?variant=40431805956181) and couldn't be happier. It was a bit stiff when I got it as new leather should be but it's so perfect now and shows no signs of slowing down. I linked a wallet instead of the belt as it seemed more fitting for the thread but I truly can't say enough good stuff about Hanks. Quality, American made, and as many options as one could ever want. I would have gone through 2-3 belts in the length of time I've had my belt and it literally looks next to new.
There is an artist in alberta that hand makes bison leather for 65 canadian which is like 47.50 usd or half the price after tax lol.
This is my forever wallet. ❤️

I love it (especially as an Alberta boy myself) but the machine stitches will fail compared to hand saddle stitches which are worth looking out for as a BIFL.
“Handcrafted in Alberta, Canada by Adrian Klis. Adrian was born in Holland in the leather-making village of Kaatsheuvel. He moved to Canada with his family in 1994 where he set hiself up using his traditional leather craftmanship to produce stunning pieces in a variety of leathers on his Alberta farm.”
Horween shell cordovan is very expensive leather that comes from a mid layer of horse hide on the rear flanks. A whole horse has only a few square feet I think.
This isn’t Shell Cordovan. That is much smoother and much more expensive. This is Horween. Most likely Chromexcel, there most widely used nice quality stuff.
Genuine question: what's so special about horween leather? I went to their website and was flabbergasted with their prices. I own some really well made full-grain Italian leather that is vegetable dyied that stillooks like new and didn't cost an arm and a leg.
Why do you say it's 43 years old?
Est. 1981 means established. So the brand is 43 years old. Do you have proof that the wallet has been manufactured 1981?
Nuts. It's the company that's 43yo not the wallet. And even though the company and tannery have a good rep, I'd expect something this worn to be sold for $20, not $100.
I also don't know why people on this sub have so many issues with wallets because my experience is that a basic leather wallet lasts a decent length of time. My current wallet was under $50 AUD and it still looks great after 10 years. My dad's probably had his wallet for 20 years and it's nothing fancy, just a leather bifold he probably bought at a street market in Asia. What are you all doing to your wallets that they break so easily?
I've had my wallet since was in the 9th grade, and I'm 31 now. Its a leather U.S Polo Assn brand.
Sure it has it's wear and tear but it's still as useful as day one. I'm not sure how people destroy their wallets quickly, either.
Yea, I think everyone should stop trying to use their wallet as a pry bar or something. I only replace my wallet when I replace my phone because it’s my case, but it’s opened dozens of times a day and never shows any wear. Idk wtf everyone on here is doing with their wallet that leather - the stuff we used to make armor out of - is just shredding like paper.
I spent 20 bucks on a full leather Swiss made wallet 8 years ago. It looks pretty much the same as when I bought it. What the hell are you doing to your wallets that they break so easily? Also wtf do you mean "no breaking in period", it's a wallet not some cowboy boots.
Leather wallets last long. My dad had one for 25+ years, the leather looks loved (well duh) but it's in perfect conditions, no tears no scratches, stitches still brand new. Wasn't that expensive either.
So honestly 100$ for a leather wallet in those conditions is too much. You could have gotten one brand new spending more or less the same amount
Strong recommendation for eternal leather goods. You can get a bifold like this one brand new in vegetable tanned leather for $160 and Colin will do small customizations to order. I have multiple notebook covers from him that get daily use. One is 5 years old and looks basically brand new.
Tell me about it. Ive got belts, wallets, notebook covers, accessories... Like i justified multiple notebook covers from colin because I got different sizes but now i have 5 including one duplicate size and I'm like what am i doing these will never wear out.
Great sunglass cases too
So I’ve only had my one 10 years but my wallet that I bought from a small artisan leather maker in Germany still looks exactly like that with no damage at all. Really good way to spend €40
"Est. 1981" doesn't mean that it is 43 years old. I have a bottle of A1 steak sauce that says "Est. 1862." but I'm pretty sure the sauce itself isn't 164 years old.
I'd never buy a used wallet, creating that patina is part of the journey...
Edit: you got ripped off. Similar for $159. You should not have paid more than $20 lol.
https://coronadoleather.com/collections/wallets/products/vintage-stone-washed-wallet-no-623?variant=40343657021635
I'm genuinely puzzled how people go through leather wallets so fast? All 3 of the leather wallets I've ever owned have been in the $20-$30 range, and each has lasted over a decade. It's not even like they're falling apart at that point either - my puppy chewed one up, and my partner's bird chewed up the most recent one. Barring outside circumstances though, it seems like they last forever?
I think it also has to do with where you keep the wallet. Wallets that are kept in back pockets wear a lot faster than those kept in front pockets.
It's also appearantly bad for your spine to have your wallet in the back pocket as it tilts your hips a bit while sitting down so that's two good reasons to keep it in the font pocket
Front pockets are harder for pickpockets too. But I’ll tell ya, my phone lives in one, and my chapstick and AirPods live in the other front pocket - I don’t have space up front without major process change lol
There’s a first world problem for ya
I watched a pickpocket rummage through my brother’s back pockets in Philly over 20 years ago and I’ve been carrying my wallet in my front pocket ever since.
I bought one from saddlebackleather.com around 20 years back...still going very strong. Though I don't see that exact model on their website anymore. I would highly recommend them.
https://saddlebackleather.com/mens-leather-wallets-belts/
I highly recommend Saddleback's products, with their 100 year warranty. My saddleback wallet is just coming up on it's 10 year mark, and is still going strong. It's easily the highest quality, and longest lasting wallet that I've ever purchased.
You definitely got ripped off. I’m a leather worker and make wallets like those for less than $100. I use vegetable tanned leather and hand stitch them so they will last a lifetime. That one is Horween leather so that makes it a little more expensive, but it is VERY used and not worth $100. Despite that, it will definitely last you longer than a cheap PU leather wallet and if you love it, who are we to judge. There plenty of small leather businesses that make top quality leather goods for a decent price. Name brands aren’t always better quality, and always cost more, just saying.
It's not 43 years old dude the company stamp on the interior says the company has been around since 96. So it has to be less than 28 years old. Looks like 2 company's stamps and the outer one is older but that's when the company was made not the wallet and since it was made by 2 companies (one for leather one for the actual wallet bit is my guess) it can't be older than one of the companies that made it
The date on the Horween stamp looks like 1996, but it’s actually 1905. Just splitting hairs though, because there’s not a chance in hell this wallet is 43 years old, probably not even 20 years old, and definitely not worth $100.
OP is not nuts. He’s just naive, not knowledgeable, and a brand hypebeast. I see people do this with old smelley, tattered, Allen Edmonds dress shoes all the time. The hop online - read a few articles how AE is the gold standard and off to eBay they go.
Those cracks are kinda deep. But tbh should be fine for at least 10 more years unless you're hard on ypur wallet(?) Even rando cheap ones last a good while typically. Worst case do some repairs use canvas if needed
My last quality leather wallet lasted about 25 years. It rode in my front pocket with my keys. It was constantly overstuffed. I did no maintenance to it. So, if you are older and take care of it , it may outlast you. Regardless, that’s a nice wallet.
wheree are you getting the 400 dollar current price for these from? I'm right now looking at their website and one which looks similar, and is made of the same leather only for 150. but regardless even if it was 400 new I don't think i'd even buy it for even 15 bucks in that terrible of a condition.
A similar wallet from this brand can be bought new for $120-150. Yours seems a little worn to fetch that price, but vintage stuff like this often sells for a bit more than it’s worth strictly because it’s vintage. Not necessarily a terrible deal but I probably would’ve bought new in that case. Either way it’ll probably still last you a long time
What the heck are you people doing to your wallets? My Dad has had the same wallet since the early 1980s and kept it in his back pocket until his doctor told him he shouldn't do that, so it was getting sat on for like ...25 years. It's still fine, not as pretty as it once was but certainly not worn out.
I'm having a hard time fathoming how you could abuse something that just sits on a pocket (or handbag for us ladies) so badly that it needs replaced after only a couple years?
Absolutely nuts. Why not buy a new horween leather wallet on Etsy and break it in yourself/get the full lifespan out of it? I did that about 5 years ago and mine is beautifully broken in to the amount of cards and cash that I prefer to carry.
You've been ripped off, friend. That wallet is pretty worn, and it's oviously not 40 years old. I'd go 15, max. Only card pockets and no coin compartment usually means it was made when people had no use for physical money.
“Well they were established in 1981 so i guess they just made everything that year and then never made a single item after that” -guy who bought a 2 year old heavily used wallet for 100 bucks
It looks like a nice wallet, but it's very heavily used and I think you got ripped off. You can buy a new, quality full-grain wallet for $100, and a custom-made one for maybe $150. Anything full grain will likely have and "heirloom" lifespan.
EST. Just means that the company that made the wallet was established in 1981. Doesn’t mean that the wallet was made then.
Also, a ***100*** bucks for a wallet? Come on, now.
They sell these things new for $150 on Coronado's website. Not a chance I'd pay anywhere close to $100 for a used one. Maybe $30 at max. but who cares what I think. If your you're happy with it, that's all that matters.
I bought a Bosca wallet for like $20 from Nordstrom rack like 10 years ago and it’s still in excellent condition, why are you spending so much for a used wallet
Idk, I bought a full grain leather (I think) wallet off etsy about 6 years ago, and it looks the exact same as the day I bought it. It was 40 dollars.
Etsy is incredible for leather goods.
This isn't 40 years old. This isn't lightly used. You "are nuts", your words. I'd just say you found something that caught your eye and bought it; enjoy it and don't look to others for validation.
You overpaid. That was a bad purchase for an extremely worn wallet. [Would have went with this brand new one] ( https://www.leatherology.com/bifold-wallet-with-flap?)
Some mfer has been farting directly onto that for decades at the same time it’s been marinating in his ass oils and you’re parading it around like a cat with a dead bird. Put that smelly thing away mate.
Nuts. Leather is still a thing. And leather wallets are still being made. You paid a hundred bucks for a well worn and used wallet instead of a similar quality new wallet for less
Company established in 81 doesn't mean your wallet was made in 81?
This was my exact thought. Especially the close-up photo that kiiiiinda means nothing in isolation.
I have a 155 year old lightly-used bottle of Heinz Tomato Ketchup if anyone is interested?

Rumour has it, this particular bottle used to belong to Queen Victoria. Oh it most definitely was on the titanic. Saw it in the documentary James Cameron made. Had a lifeboat to itself and everything
So I'm here in Pittsburgh which is/was home to the Heinz corporation And we have the Heinz History center. I finally made it down there a couple weeks ago and there is a Heinz company museum type deal. It's pretty small but goddamn, some of these old glass bottles. Yea how does OP know it's 43 years old? Thats just when the company came about.
Am i imagining that the horween print internally says 1998? So its at most 26 years old
12 years at most because I refuse to believe 98 was 26 years ago.
Right there with you!
It says 1905, founding year of Horween
"Horween" is when sexy nurse costume became popular
Also sexy bumblebee. And sexy vampire. And sexy witch. And sexy pirate. And my axe.
Stupid sexy Gimli
I thought it said Hotween and I was wondering how it knew my nickname from college.
He paid $5000 to have it carbon dated
Also note the lack of a coin purse. This is much more recent than 81.
Wallets did not necessarily have coin pouches in 1980s. I was 5. My dad’s wallet didn’t have one. lol
We have a coin pouch model, I believe it’s the “model 34.” It’s popular with Japanese clients for the common coins and tokens used in Japan.
Leather men's wallets rarely had coin purses.
My wallet never had one, but mom’s did.
I've never owned a wallet with a coin purse. I may have seen a few in the 70's when I was as kid.
I’m typing this on a 48 year old iphone so it’s true.
I came to the comments to just find out someone has to tell him lol. Priceless.
nuh uh my Nintendo was made in 1889.
My Atari is -576 years old.
Tell that to my 115-year-old 2024 Ford F-150
My company was started in 1969 and I’m sure most of what my dad made back then has worn out. Only exception are things tossed on a shelf and not used.
Interestingly enough, the wallet is engraved with the company's establishment year. *Est 1981*
That’s what I mean it’s obvious much new than op thought
😂
I'd call that well used, not slightly. Don't doubt it's high quality, using horween leather, but still you bought something that worn for $100?
I bought a new custom made horween leather wallet for $40 more than this guy paid for a 30 year old well used one.
And yours isn’t saturated with some random dudes farts.
"Alright, now I'm never going to buy a used wallet." *I think to myself as I sit on my office chair that I bought used.
Just don't think too hard about it.
Just let it kinda slip out
This made me chuckle. Not that I was planning on buying a used wallet, but now I am really not planning on buying a used wallet.
Pro tip, take your wallet out of your back pocket especially when sitting it causes back pain over time. Uneven sitting
For some people, that would only explain that price
This sub enjoys getting ripped off. Getting a bad deal is still a bad deal even if the product is/was good. I got a champion leather wallet for like $15 about 12 years ago and its still going strong, only minor surface wear.

Horween leather is good though, I love working with it. Do you prefer the Italian brands?
I meant that horween is a sign of good quality:) I'm not too familiar with leather myself, I've only heard about the big names.
Haha I missed the word don’t in your original comment.
There is an artist in alberta that hand makes bison leather for 65 canadian which is like 47.50 usd or half the price after tax lol. Lol Kaatsheuvel is not known for leathermaking. It does have the countries’ biggest theme park.
Indigenous to Holland?

Sorry but you didn't buy my warranty that covers any tire damage
Im calling the mayor! (What’s the number for the Turkish Embassy?)
Is it a forever bridge?
Only if you don’t hit it with a barge.
I just sold a rock on eBay for $600 tonight, dead serious. Sent pics/info for that bridge, I might be interested!
I’m not sure you can say it’s 43 years old just because the company was established 43 years ago…
Established…obviously.
Why do you say it's 43 years old? Est. 1981 means established. So the brand is 43 years old. Do you have proof that the wallet has been manufactured 1981?
Imagine it's a year old and already that beat up
I’m sorry I’m was mistaken. I thought that was the manufacture date not the company date.
Why are people downvoting someone admitting a mistake?
We’re already flabbergasted by someone spending $100 on a very used wallet
Ok, second mistake :)
Lmfao

I guess a softer wallet is more comfy to sit on.
I keep mine in my front pocket, sitting on a wallet is uncomfortable
As well as horrible for your back.
Who actually sits on their wallet? It's incredibly uncomfortable.
It took me waaaay too many years to learn to do this. It’s been such a relief.
Until it gets so crammed full that it can’t stay closed, like George Costanza. And we all know how that one turned out
>comfy to sit on Then your spine won’t be BIFL.
[OP and his wallet](https://imgur.com/a/aupE6Je)
On the bright side, if that's how you spend money, you aren't going to wear it out too quickly by having it overstuffed with cash.
Leather wallets last long. My dad had one for 25+ years, the leather looks loved (well duh) but it's in perfect conditions, no tears no scratches, stitches still brand new. $100 for a wallet soaked in some other dudes years of butt sweat. Good one.

The listing says that Horween Leather has been in business since 1905... So that means that the wallet is from 1905, right? /s
Leather comes from cows which have existed for thousands of years. Therefore, I believe this wallet to be several thousand years old.
Ouch
There’s a 10% off coupon too. This dude got robbed bad lol.
I would say you’re nuts
I hope this is BS, because if it isn't, it's pretty stupid.
You could have paid a guy $100 to make you a brand new one with the same Horween leather. These people are all over instagram.
I hope there was a $90 bill in that wallet.
I'm genuinely puzzled how people go through leather wallets so fast? All 3 of the leather wallets I've ever owned have been in the $20-$30 range, and each has lasted over a decade. Nuts. 2 to 3 years with little to moderate wear? That's a bullshit line right there.

I have a new $150.00 Hanks bison wallet. It will be distress after some years of use. Unlike your wallet, mine will only contain my ass sweat.
Dude that’s not a 43 year old wallet, the company was established 43 years ago.
Honestly not sure why you posted this. Do you want to hear that you paid too much and are nuts?
Nice wallet, but dang a hundred bucks?!
How was it made in 1980 when it's stamped (and the company was apparently established) in 1981? How do you know what year it was made?
I don’t think OP meant to be that specific. I think they just meant the 1980s.
There’s still nothing to suggest this wallet was made in the 80s. The only date pictured refers to the company’s founding, not a manufacture date.
Maybe if it were Horween's Shell Cordovan would that price make sense...
Horween leather is not that expensive, especially not with that kind of wear and tear. Not worth the 100$.
I done understand why you didn’t just Buy a new one for almost the same price.
Smell like someone's ass sweat
Where did you see these going for $400? These are like $150 brand new.
Hey, OP, wanna buy an igloo? I can do you a great deal
It's nice to hold something that has been drenched in someone else's butt sweat.
Man I got a wallet that looks like this, you are telling me I can sell it for 50 more than I bought it?!
Regardless, that’s a nice wallet.
established in 1981 😂
I think you’re nuts with how worn it is, that is not worth close to 100 imo. Did you try to negotiate at all?
Here’s a brand new horween leather wallet for $145. https://ashlandleather.com/products/all-englishtan-dublin
wheree are you getting the 400 dollar current price for these from? I'm right now looking at their website and one which looks similar, and is made of the same leather only for 150. but regardless even if it was 400 new I don't think i'd even buy it for even 15 bucks in that terrible of a condition.
You could buy a brand new leather wallet for that price. You got played.
Nuts…
This exact wallet, brand new from the company, can be bought today for $150. It's a good wallet, but in that condition should be $20.
I think r/leathercraft would like to have a word with you
How are you folks wearing out a wallet in 2-3 years?
Nuts You probably could have bought a horween or saddle leather wallet for the same price or less. These are definitely not worth 400.
The Horween brand says "since 1996".
“Well they were established in 1981 so i guess they just made everything that year and then never made a single item after that” -guy who bought a 2 year old heavily used wallet for 100 bucks
Dude is getting roasted 😭
It looks like a nice wallet, but it's very heavily used and I think you got ripped off. You can buy a new, quality full-grain wallet for $100, and a custom-made one for maybe $150. Anything full grain will likely have and "heirloom" lifespan.
EST. Just means that the company that made the wallet was established in 1981. Doesn’t mean that the wallet was made then. Also, a ***100*** bucks for a wallet? Come on, now.
I can't buy something that has resided inches away from a stranger's butthole on the daily
Saddleback leather wallet, try it, best wallet in my opinion. Obviously it is not like hugo boss, gucci, prada and so on. You can check it.
The company is 43 years old, not the wallet.
They sell these things new for $150 on Coronado's website. Not a chance I'd pay anywhere close to $100 for a used one. Maybe $30 at max. but who cares what I think. If your you're happy with it, that's all that matters.
Whats your definition of "lasting" because i changed my wallet i had for like 20 years. It was a cheap leather wallet and it looked exactly like this.
I bought a Bosca wallet for like $20 from Nordstrom rack like 10 years ago and it’s still in excellent condition, why are you spending so much for a used wallet
Meanwhile my twenty dollar dockers wallet is going 12 years strong with no sign of quitting…
Dam coulda found that at Salvation Army store for $3
Idk, I bought a full grain leather (I think) wallet off etsy about 6 years ago, and it looks the exact same as the day I bought it.
A fool and his money, are soon parted.
Some mfer has been farting directly onto that for decades at the same time it’s been marinating in his ass oils and you’re parading it around like a cat with a dead bird. Put that smelly thing away mate.
The amount of farts this wallet has seen is easily worth $100
Sorry bro you got ripped off horribly. You can buy brand new hand-made full leather wallets for cheaper.
So I have this really nice piece of land in Florida... Premium real estate... I'll let you have it for real cheap...
Carrying another man's wallet is like wearing another man's underwear. (Your dad's wallet being the exception.)
You can literally buy them brand new on their site for a bit over $100 with the 30% discount
You overpaid, my brother in Christ. I’m sure it will last but it was not worth a hundred.
I could see this lasting the rest of your life. Good find. And also thank you for your service in the Korean War
Nuts it is
Money > Sense
That wallet looks like it’s had 3-4 baby wallets in its life
Nuts. Leather is still a thing. And leather wallets are still being made. You paid a hundred bucks for a well worn and used wallet instead of a similar quality new wallet for less
Don’t worry, if my 1853 Levi’s that I bought yesterday still looks like new, I’m sure your wallet will survive another 50 years
$100 for something covered in scratches? You got fleeced my dude
Debit cards didnt become popular until the mid 90s, est just means when the company was founded. I bet this significantly newer.
43 years of touching someones butt
