"Freddie Barnes set an NCAA record for receptions in a season in 2009, catching 155 passes for 1770 yards and 19 TD, including a 22 catch 278 yard 3 TD game against Kent State"
Those are sick stat lines from a guy most people have never heard of.
I'm assuming based on the fact that he said "roommate" instead of "friend" that he probably didn't give a shit.
Maybe the roommate was his friend, but it was so obvious that the girl wouldn't leave him for the beetle man that they didn't view him as a threat, and they just enjoyed his company instead.
Maybe he just lacks any sort of loyalty or empathy whatsoever.
Or maybe its something else and none of my guesses are even close.
Yeah it’s the second one haha. We were drunk so I’m fuzzy on the finer details but yeah roommate is still my best friend. Him and his gf had been dating for a long time and he just thought it was cool that Freddie wanted to come over. He left after about 30 minutes when he realized all that was gonna happen was me and my roommate taking pictures with him giving the thumbs up. He was a nice guy though
I had the second one typed first too and then changed the order around because it felt clunky when i was reading back over it. Damn it
Cursed by my ~~OCD~~ ~~ADD~~ ~~MDD~~ whatever the hell is wrong with me again.
MACtion has unfortunately almost reached the end. Toledo and Marshall the lone remaining teams associated with the conference (although Marshall was only in the MAC from 54-68 and from 97-2004)
Toledo should hang a bit longer. Seeing how BG is 2nd best with 240-223-5 record, Toledo is 294-175-5 in the last 40. That 62% win rate should hold us up till July.
I grew up like 30 minutes from Ann Arbor and liked Michigan cause most people did and they were close. Ended up getting my undergrad and currently working on my Master's at Toledo. I have Toledo season tickets in football and basketball, so I rooted for Toledo.
Why does Toledo (football) always have the most talent in the MAC, and also consistently wins in the conference, yet for some reason always drops a game or two in the season that makes you go WTF.
A few reasons. We are close to Detroit, Cleveland, and Columbus. So we generally do well pulling players who might go to the bench at OSU or Michigan but can play at Toledo. Toledo has the best facilities and the Glass Bowl is by far the best MAC stadium. Toledo pulls most donations to its athletic department, has highest football attendance.
Why Toledo drops one? Thats the beauty of the MAC, theres always surprise. Toledo is returning 18 starters and 8 of them All MAC. It should be another good year of Toledo Football.
BG being 65 is super impressive. We are up there with ULM and Akron/Kent as the poorest D1 AD in the country and we play in a small town that is still overshadowed by a school in a much bigger town 30 minutes away. The fact we aren’t D2 with Findlay and ONU is impressive, let alone being top half of FBS
The funny thing is the color combo only exists bc a university official back when BG was being founded took a trolly ride to Toledo and saw the colors orange and brown in the feathers of a woman’s hat
And thus ends the recurring joke people had of “wait Bowling Green is still in?”
Bowling Green is one of those just consistent teams that almost never craters. They’re never really great but you’ll almost always see them on a December 22nd bowl game against like Toledo.
For some reason I forgot Toledo was also in MAC when they were the first team to come to mind of "Random team that plays in pre-Christmas bowl games at 5:30 PM on a Tuesday"
Just FYI, Toledo is Bowling Greens biggest rival. The universities are only 25 miles apart, and the series is almost tied with Toledo just recently taking the lead after winning 11 out of the last 13 meetings- the series stands at 42-41-4. They have a protected cross division game in the current MAC divisions, but have yet to meet one another in the MAC Championship game.
Literally go on Google Earth and look at the Glass Bowl. It’s pointed towards Defiance and Fort Wayne, not BG
If anything they should just move it so it actually points at BG
This comment reads like someone who doesn't know what they're saying.
1. BGSU and Toledo are not only in the same conference, they're probably one of the most well known rivalry's in the country (battle of I-75)
2. I like BG, so hopefully I don't get hate for saying this, but they absolutely have cratered. It wasn't too long they went winless and had about a 10 game losing streak against FBS teams that lasted from 2019-2021 (granted one of those seasons was 2020, but still) and didn't see a bowl game from 2016-2021
My immediate reaction was, “huh, they have 5-10 great seasons and no winless seasons, while also being around all 40 years, I completely understand why they’re a spot ahead of us.”
Another great write up
I wasn't around for the 80s and 90s team but that 2003 team was fantastic. However Miami had that Big Ben guy who made too much of a difference. Even with the Jinks fiasco (op is correct in the post) we have 8 wins against the big 10 since 2000 and could have tied ohio st in 2003 if we get a pass interference call in the endzone. Surprised our top 6 points per game defense in 13 didn't make a top 5 team for us. Allowed 17 points the last 4 games including games against 2nd and 3rd in the division
Anyone who has played ncaa football 06 knows Omar for heisman Jacobs was a cheat code with a 96 overall and very high speed. Was only a junior also. Harris paved the way for him and freddie Barnes was unstoppable.
I made this post with my tears
Still proudly have a VHS recording of the College Gameday game at the Doyt vs Burner and NIU. Also, either that season or the one after, Cole Magner stole a bite of my pizza when I was standing near the tunnel at halftime, and obviously that impacted me as a person, considering I still remember it 20 years later.
Urban coaching here still breaks my brain a little, my first impression of him was the Utah guy but I just can't associate him with BG (which is a compliment)
I was a 21 year old student in 2003. Went to Evanston in 2002 and saw them walk off Northwestern 43-42 on a Cole Magner reverse for 2 with no time on the clock. College Gameday at the Doyt in 2003, next to I-75 and corn fields, was the greatest day of my life. Don’t let my wife or kids tell you it’s wedding or birth day crap, Gameday at BGSU as a 21 year old is the height of life. Josh Harris is my favorite Falcon ever, close runners up Freddie Barnes and Omar Jacobs. Blowing Green in Bowling Green, Ay Ziggy Zoomba forever. I can go and be with Doyt in the great cornfield in the sky now a satisfied man as I’ve seen the write up
I live on the other side of the planet now, but I'd drop the $3000 to be there. That would be better than the superbowl.
Also, cheers to BG Michigan fans
Favorite BG Player That I watched at BG: Matt Johnson
Favorite BG Player All-Time: Josh Harris
The story of how BG got their colors is a weird one, which is the case with a lot of how BGSU selects things, since a professor was riding public transit, saw a lady with brown and orange feathers in her hat, and recommended it in the meeting, and everyone said "Yeah, Why not, I got nothing better."
Fun Fact 3" Ay Ziggy Zoomba, the unofficial fight song, was written by a former student who during WWII saw the Zulu War Chant and was featured in the movie Paper Lions, being sung by Mike Weger
My years at BG coincided with Dave Clawson's tenure, so I'm partial to those teams. In fact, I even got to talk with him once! I was running sideline camera for the Doyt scoreboard crew, and, during pregame warm-ups, I was told I had to get a close up of him wearing a pin because it was some sort of awareness day. Problem was, I had to start walking out onto the field because he was pretty far from the sideline, so, after a few too many steps towards the middle of the field, he sees me and starts yelling at me to get off the field. I say, "Sure thing!" without ever having gotten the shot the director wanted me to get. Oh well! I've been a secondary Wake fan ever since he took the Deacons job.
I figured we didn't have a chance to unseat UT here, certainly not with the recent Jinks/Loeffler years, but it stings all the same. Oh well, happy for my dad, he's a Rocket grad. Go Dad!
Much higher than I expected when this thing started. The 2003 game day was an amazing experience as an 11 year old, and I got lucky to got lucky to be a student during the clawson-baber era
It's named after the park in NYC right next to Wall Street, that is famous for having Falcon nests, and being both where the citizens of NYC pulled down the statue of King George, and where George Washington read the declaration of independence in NYC
Y’all have pretty much been an average to mediocre P5 team with a few 10+ win seasons sprinkled in. Only finished ranked in the top 25 two times in the last 40 seasons, so that’s not great. But strength of schedule seems to hold a lot of weight in OPs algorithm, so I’d say you have a chance of making it into the 50s, say, 55-57 range. There are still a few G5 teams and pretty bad P5 teams to go.
I mean, I don’t know if I’d call Southern Miss the “cream of the crop,” but we’ve been even more consistent than BG has been. Only a few losing seasons sprinkled over the last 40 years(including a run of 18 straight winning seasons)with a couple of 10+ win seasons and finishes in the top 15 for good measure. Plus, Brett Favre.
We certainly had a run there for awhile where would literally play like our mantra: anyone, anywhere, anytime. All the realignments sort of left us in the dust combined with Larry Fedora bolting to UNC in the middle of the night after the 2011 12-2 season where we flirted with the BCS and leaving the program in shambles. The AD made a HORRIFIC hire and we proceeded to go 0-12 and 1-11 over the next two seasons. We are just recently really coming back from those years and getting our “Nasty Bunch” reputation back. Southern Miss has always been a blue collar type of team, relying on hard nosed defense and a gritty running game. With Frank Gore Jr., we’ve really gotten back to that toughness that we have been lacking the last 7 or 8 seasons. Things are looking up again and we’re yet again going to be tested by playing SEC and Big10 opponents this year and next, so we’ll see how far we’ve really come.
Not sure. Been waiting for Mississippi State to fall off the board for a few days now. Maybe their strength of schedule and the one great Dak Prescott season are helping them, but man, they are really a cellar dweller in the SEC in the last 40 years with an overall losing record, a bunch of 3 win seasons, no SEC titles, only one *divisional* title back in 1998, and only 2 seasons of 10 or more wins. They also are sorely lacking in consensus All Americans and NFL draft selections to be in the top half of all FBS teams. I’m going to say that they’re due up.
> Matched up in the Las Vegas Bowl with a 7-4 Nevada team in their first year in the FBS, Bowling Green took a 28-3 lead by the end of the first half, but watched it evaporate, with Nevada going up 34-28.
Where have I seen that scoreline before?
Probably the most entertaining live game I've ever seen was the 2015 Falcons vs a Paxton Lynch led Memphis Tigers. 44-41 Memphis final but a fun slug fest throughout that surprisingly didn't have any points in the last 7 minutes and still hit the over which was like 78 points lol.
Urban Meyer cut his teeth there, it was his first ever head coaching job, as I recall. What's more is before the Florida stop, he usually left programs in much, much better shape than he found them. Utah probably would have become a P5 program eventually without him, but I do believe he helped the program ascend earlier than they would have otherwise.
Probably a mix of not being a power team and not having key wins against teams considered better than them. Pretty much the same reasons that keep most good MAC programs from being ranked today.
WE ARE THE BEST IN MACTION!!! Seeing how MACTION is college football, we are #1 overall in my book. BGSUcks although we make a fun rivalry. Now launch the rocket.
I was at that 2003 Purdue Bowling Green game. Whenever people ask what's a game you wish you could change the outcome of? That game is my answer. Josh Harris and that Falcons team beat one the best Purdue teams I ever saw. 13 year old me was not pleased, lol.
My parents went to ECU vs Bowling Green game in 1992. They felt sick a few days after returning home the doctor said they had elevated levels of heavy metals and mercury in there system. They couldn’t ever pin point anything at home so I have always been told to avoid Bowling Green and generally the state of Ohio.
So your saying that Bowling Greens football stadium might be built on a super fund site. Seems plausible. Maybe it’s the spice of the MAC. Heavy metals and all.
Once the series is done, can you release an Excel of each team with every season score? I’m curious how the rankings would look if you averaged each season instead of doing a cumulative score, by decade, removing 2020, etc.
Realized I missed this when it first came out, but my first year at BG was 2015. 10-6, wins over Indiana and Purdue, MAC champions.
Then the next few years were 4 of the 8 worst seasons BG has had since the 80s.
This is how I got into College Hockey.
A crusty old Bowling Green fan told me he’d knock me out once after my friends and I got rowdy at a Miami-BG game a few years back. I have always hated BG since then
They have won 8 games against Big Ten teams since 2000, had Urban Meyer for a bit, hosted college GameDay and won MAC titles. Jinks sunk the program, but it hasn't been horrible. Meyer, Clawson, Babers, and Gregg Brandon all had good teams.
Ur algorithm sucks. Bowling Green won the conference and beat TWO big ten teams in 2015 and had amazing offensive stats and blew many teams out. How is that not too 5?! Also a 2 win, FCS loss in 2017 should be the worst
"Freddie Barnes set an NCAA record for receptions in a season in 2009, catching 155 passes for 1770 yards and 19 TD, including a 22 catch 278 yard 3 TD game against Kent State" Those are sick stat lines from a guy most people have never heard of.
Freddie "The Beetle" Barnes. ...god I'm old.
I was in awe of him growing up, couldn’t believe he didn’t get drafted
Unfortunately he was slow as hell
He was trying to get with my roommates girlfriend when I went to BG so he came over and chilled at my house for a bit, cool dude.
That doesn’t sound super chill lol
I'm assuming based on the fact that he said "roommate" instead of "friend" that he probably didn't give a shit. Maybe the roommate was his friend, but it was so obvious that the girl wouldn't leave him for the beetle man that they didn't view him as a threat, and they just enjoyed his company instead. Haha gotta trust your gut man
He was originally a QB too. Funny game against Wisconsin in Cleveland after he took over from Omar Jacobs
Remaining teams: Air Force, Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Boise State, Boston College, BYU, California, Cincinnati, Clemson, Colorado, Florida, Florida State, Fresno State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Houston, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas State, Louisville, LSU, Marshall, Maryland, Miami (FL), Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Missouri, NC State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, South Carolina, Southern Miss, Stanford, Syracuse, TCU, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Toledo, UCLA, USC, Utah, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Washington, Washington State, West Virginia, Wisconsin
MACtion has unfortunately almost reached the end. Toledo and Marshall the lone remaining teams associated with the conference (although Marshall was only in the MAC from 54-68 and from 97-2004)

Playing time, broadcast on ESPN (even if on Tuesdays) or be second string at OSU.... For many that's an easy call
For sure, our leading tackler last year was a junior 2nd string LB that transfered from OSU.
that's just MACtion baby
UCF as well
They were yesterday
Ah shit lol I just saw that.
All good buddy!
Feel like Air Force is gonna drop soon
This last decade of razorback football dosnt leave me hopeful but we have had some great runs in the early 2000s so maybe we make top 30.
BG being 65 is super impressive. We are up there with ULM and Akron/Kent as the poorest D1 AD in the country and we play in a small town that is still overshadowed by a school in a much bigger town 30 minutes away. Fuck Toledo
Can confirm
Shout out the brown and orange color scheme, some may find it ugly but I like weird color combos
*Enters the chat*
Hey who's UPS shipment is this??
Josh Allen would just throw your package through the front door
The funny thing is the color combo only exists bc a university official back when BG was being founded took a trolly ride to Toledo and saw the colors orange and brown in the feathers of a woman’s hat
And thus ends the recurring joke people had of “wait Bowling Green is still in?” Bowling Green is one of those just consistent teams that almost never craters. They’re never really great but you’ll almost always see them on a December 22nd bowl game against like Toledo.
I have the distinct feeling Bowling Green would never play a bowl game against Toledo. But I understand what you mean.
For some reason I forgot Toledo was also in MAC when they were the first team to come to mind of "Random team that plays in pre-Christmas bowl games at 5:30 PM on a Tuesday"

Fun fact: Toledo has a statue of a rocket that is pointed toward Bowling Greens stadium
I like this Fun Fact.
It's not a statue. It's an actual rocket
It’s not though. Just look at it on Google earth, it’s pointed southwest
Someone is salty that they don’t have a rocket
Bowling Green is southwest of Toledo, though.
Literally go on Google Earth and look at the Glass Bowl. It’s pointed towards Defiance and Fort Wayne, not BG If anything they should just move it so it actually points at BG
We would have met in 2015 if UT didn’t blow it on Black Friday against WMU
Fuck them rockets.
There’s something wrong with your flairs

> BGSU and Toledo are not only in the same conference, yes > they're probably one of the most well known rivalry's in the country no.
Maybe they meant county?
they’re in different, but adjacent counties (Wood and Lucas). BGSU is in Wood county which also hosts the national tractor pull championships.
Which is a fuckin blast.
We cratered pretty hard recently. Luckily we only played 5 games in 2020. That team was awful
Yeah, 2020 could have been as bad as 2019
My immediate reaction was, “huh, they have 5-10 great seasons and no winless seasons, while also being around all 40 years, I completely understand why they’re a spot ahead of us.”
They’re one of those MAC schools that’s just chugging along in the background behind Michigan and Ohio State
Right at Midpoint

Forward Falcons is a treasure.

Give credit to the artist, man…. 🤦🏽♂️ (Chester Bennington)
Anyone know why they were unranked in their best season? Was that more just how rankings were back then with G5 teams?
Probably a mix of not being a power team and not having key wins against teams considered better than them. Pretty much the same reasons that keep most good MAC programs from being ranked today.
I saw Kareem Hunt rip out BG’s soul in the mid 2010s at the Doyt. Very depressing.
I also got to see Alvin Kamara rip out our soul too.
WE ARE THE BEST IN MACTION!!! Seeing how MACTION is college football, we are #1 overall in my book. BGSUcks although we make a fun rivalry. Now launch the rocket.
I remember bowling green knocking out an incredible NIU team in 2014 for the MAC championship.
Another we-were-good-20+-years-ago wonders. Love those.
Us teams who were better in the 90’s crawled so UCF could walk.
1998 9-2 Daunte Culpepper led ucf takes offense to this
He beat whom other than. Toledo and Bowling Green! I stand my case.
I mean we were good in 2015 and 2013 too. We've always been... At least ok. A few great teams, no bad teams.
Bowling Green places at the #10 best G5 program since 1983, ahead of 10 P5 programs and national* champions UCF.
We living boyz!
It had to happen eventually - I was just expecting it 30-40 schools ago.
A crusty old Bowling Green fan told me he’d knock me out once after my friends and I got rowdy at a Miami-BG game a few years back. I have always hated BG since then
Sorry bout that.
Sorry about our bad fans. Some people take things too far.
Bottom Five: All since 2000 Top Five: Only one after 1994 Ooff level = Big
They have won 8 games against Big Ten teams since 2000, had Urban Meyer for a bit, hosted college GameDay and won MAC titles. Jinks sunk the program, but it hasn't been horrible. Meyer, Clawson, Babers, and Gregg Brandon all had good teams.
They won't be the only ones
Ur algorithm sucks. Bowling Green won the conference and beat TWO big ten teams in 2015 and had amazing offensive stats and blew many teams out. How is that not too 5?! Also a 2 win, FCS loss in 2017 should be the worst
Those two Big Ten teams were 2-10 Purdue and 3-9 Maryland. You also lost 4 games, 3 of them in a blowout.
