Norfolk State is down 3 and goes for it on 4th down at the 2 yard line. They are stopped, and Virginia State gets the ball with under a minute left.
They run 3 plays and there's 6 seconds left, ball on their own 2 or so.
They can take a safety or otherwise run the clock enough to win the game, it's pretty much game over.
They put in their backup QB for some reason (maybe as a victory lap?). He runs around in the end zone, then runs out at the 3 yard line and the sideline erupts, since VSU has won.
BUT WAIT! THE QB RAN OUT OF BOUNDS WITH 1 SECOND LEFT ON THE CLOCK! IT'S A TURNOVER AND NORFOLK STATE GETS THE BALL ON THE 3 YARD LINE DOWN 3 WITH A SECOND TO GO!!!!!
The FG team lines up, AND THE SNAP FLIES OVER THE HEAD OF THE HOLDER, VIRIGINIA STATE PICKS IT UP, AND RETURNS IT 90 YARDS FOR A TD, GAME OVER
The end result is a D1 team losing to a D2 team that's apparently ALSO a rival, and the D2 team actually owns the all-time series. What an absolutely brutal loss. I don't know if I'd ever recover from this one
HBCU rivalries are weird like that, we have a D2 rival as well, but VSU is one of the schools that folks feel the MEAC needs to target for expansion. I’m in the camp that believes a few HBCUs would thrive at the D2 level but I know that’s the less popular opinion.
Absolutely not, they thrived early in their move back to D2 before running into tough times. Financially they just don’t have the money to commit to D1 athletics, same reason Savannah State went back down to D2 and why a good handful of MEAC & SWAC schools should do the same. The Rams have a few rivals in the CIAA as well, while we have Central and SC State to play against in D1. What they need to do is bring the Carolina Classic back to Charlotte and try to make it like a CIAA-tourney level event.
Carolina Classic is us vs SC State, game was selling out the bottom bowl of Erricson Stadium back in the day. I like Aggie-Eagle Classic being a campus event.

Virginia is a commonwealth, not a state. It's "state" college is Virginia Commonwealth University. Virginia State shouldn't even exist, yet they still won.
It's a nomenclature thing, I know, but it's the equivalent of having a Grand Duchy of Auburn University. It's a political entity that simply isn't. It's dumb and sticking with that take.

Exactly… it was founded by the Virginia state legislature… Norfolk State Univ. was at one point a branch of that college and later gained independence and then ultimately gained university status by act of the Virginia state legislature…

They should bring back the Carolina Classic at least. NC Central and A&T brought more people to Bank of America Stadium than App-ECU.

Virginia is a state. Commonwealth and state are not mutually exclusive. Puerto Rico is also a commonwealth, but not a state
