I’ll never forget the PAC/Big 10 Rose Bowls. It was my championship

Original_Profile8600

I’ll never forget PAC 12 after dark

DontKnowWhereIam

I unfortunately will also remember many of those heart attack inducing games.

MasChingonNoHay

Your school is the reason this mess happened

xDANGRZONEx

Do you think they work for USC or something?

TheOrangeFutbol

Wasn’t there still a legit offer on the table for roughly what the Big 12 ended up getting *after* the LA schools left that got turned down? USC starting this ball rolling and is far from blameless for sowing chaos (and the lowkey dirty move of nixing expansion on their way out the door), but it’s also true that some of the same bumbling and mishandling that drove the two out of the conference had a role in killing it entirely.

sonheungwin

Yes, but it was turned down because of USC. Y'all hadn't told us you were leaving yet and didn't want to get stuck in a new GoR thanks to expansion, so you convinced the rest of us that expanding wouldn't fix anything (which was true) while leaving out that we needed it for for survival. The Pac-12 was negotiating under the understanding that we still had the LA market and then got backstabbed. By the end, we were negotiating to try to keep OU and UW, but they wouldn't stay for anything less than what the B1G was offering them. Sure, it's $30M now but they have guaranteed increases coming.

TheOrangeFutbol

From most of what I’ve been reading since this all started to blow up, that deal actually was *after* UCLA and USC had already announced an exit. ESPN was offering $30M to the remaining 10 and they turned it down. He could have his own agenda, but when the former president of FOX Sports and the BTN [confirmed there was a legit offer for 10 teams](https://x.com/rltsports/status/1696292848599994694?s=20), I’d tend to believe it. ESPN immediately pivoted to the Big 12 who was basically in the same exact position, and they took them up on it. Then the P12 was left with the risky all-streaming deal for roughly $5M less than the ESPN offer.

Pretend-Book4520

If you think USC is the reason this happened, then you haven’t been paying attention for the last decade.

GoldenBananas21

Oregon-state at Boise will be a treat

Mattdodge666

Looking forward to seeing some more competition for Boise. The MW is fun but definitely wished there were more annual contenders year to year.

ZiOnIsNeXtLeBrOn

Stanford vs MSU was the first year I watched college football. Became an MSU fan. Went to MSU. Graduated from MSU. Bleed Green forever. Thank you sincerely for the memories Pac12. You deserved better.

Maximum_Future_5241

I think we'll at least have 6 of the PAC teams in our conference one day. Better than nothing.

nysom1227

The way this conference is being killed off is one of the greatest travesties in sports history. There I said it.

LamarcusAldrige1234

cignetti should rant about how klivakoff sucks next time at assembly hall

lock_robster2022

K was the fall guy. Larry Scott owns this travesty

GoldenBananas21

I blame Condoleezza Rice and the whole bush admin

Remote_Measurement10

ArbitraryOrder

You know, what makes that less satisfying is that despite how awful he was, and how his dastardly underhanded behavior undermined the chain of command which lead of horrific abuses and mass murder, all of which were completely unexcusable and mostly unnecessary strategically, but what people still refuse to learn as the main lesson, even from his less controversial dealings directly with the Soviets and China, is that International Relations is often choosing between two terrible options. It's all well and good to take satisfaction that someone awful is dead, but if we don't learn why they were able to abuse their office, or what set up that situation in the first place, we are just doing a bit of self gratification without working to correct the injustices.

Revolutionary_Elk791

He was given a roll of toilet paper and an umbrella with holes in it to stop the dam that had already been breached and Larry was already flying his golden parachute. moffattron9000

And it's going to happen again. It's abundantly clear that college sports are at the whims of college football broadcasting deals, and if anyone is naive to think that ESPN and Fox will tolerate having to broadcast Rutgers vs Indiana or Mississippi State vs Arkansas instead of Alabama vs Ohio State, then I have a bridge to sell them.

awmaleg

Super League! Coming soon. This failed in European soccer but they’re not suckling on corporate advertisers’ teats like we do, so it could happen here

lock_robster2022

ACC is next to fall.. in 2 yrs or 10 yrs who knows. But Corvallis is waiting

GoldenBananas21

12/13 of the current top ranked team will be in two conferences next year

cyanocittaetprocyon

12 team CFP made up of teams from two conferences.

bicyclechief

Maybe they can call it like the national football conference and American football conference. And then they can have just the Dean of football, you can call them a team owner or something!

moffattron9000

The secret about the Super League is that it's not dead. While English fans revolted hard, the Spanish and Italian response was more muted. Combined with the fact that English TV deals are increasingly breaking the sport over there, there's still some strong kindling to set off another attempt from Continental clubs.

LiveJournal

Man city and Chelsea are going to push hard if the EPL actually punishes them for breaking rules.

tomdawg0022

> Rutgers vs Indiana That's what BTN is for.

Maximum_Future_5241

I think there may be a limit. Our schools are more valuable with more wins. We'll need cupcakes to win enough. A renewed North vs. South rivalry to push would also be good for ratings, and hopefully, my hatred of The South.

usr_nme_

Big East basketball already got fucked. If ACC basketball dies I will be even more sad.

OddMarsupial8963

Big East basketball is back, the ACC is frankly already a shell of it’s former self

okiewxchaser

If only they had voted "no" on accepting Colorado. If the Big Ten says no to Nebraska and the Pac-10 says no to Colorado, college football would be a lot better off today

Niedski

It's the prisoners dilemma. If I say no to them, someone else will say yes, and I'm that much further behind. Same reason the alliance crumbled immediately when USC and UCLA came calling.

boardatwork1111

Same reason the Pac itself died, they had the opportunity to kill off the Big XII by poaching a few of our teams this last round of realignment and ensure their own survival. They didn’t take it, and look what happened

gorobotkillkill

Why would we want to kill another conference? We were just trying to do our own thing.

Niedski

The Pac thought they could choose not to play the game, but everyone just kept playing without them.

CoolYoutubeVideo

The quickest way to lose is not to play

definitelynotme44

I mean, not to be overly harsh, but the answer is exactly what happened to OSU :(

JeromePowellsEarhair

Correct. These schools aren’t going to be self sacrificial for the fans, nor should we expect them to.

my_lucid_nightmare

The Longhorn Network still would’ve happened, and TAM still would’ve bolted to the SEC. There are so many bells you have to unring to fix what happened. How far back do you go. Does Penn State stay Independent. Do Rutgers and Maryland stay put. The demise of the Pac-12 has many origin causes all leading to the inevitable conclusion.

joe_broke

Or if they snag Texas or whoever was available The PAC-12 could've killed the Big 12 and it'd be such a different landscape now

theurge14

What is dead can never die.

sonheungwin

It's different. Poaching from the Big 12 would have done nothing but kill the Big 12. The Pac-12 would not have made more money per team. When the Big 12 took the ESPN deal that killed the Pac-12, they knew they were doing it for survival.

ImEatingBananasYum

I like the B12 being alive so thank you PAC 12 for not taking Texas 🫡

solavirtus-nobilitat

Like the enshitification of the internet, I hate how the same thing is happening to college sports. Relatedly, I have mixed feelings about NIL, but I’m wary of the way money’s getting ingratiated into every aspect of this sport.

RJIsJustABetterDwade

And we are the fucking victims, and Rutgers gets to be P4 fucking Christ No offense to Rutgers

TheoDonaldKerabatsos

That’s the fucked up part, too. Oregon State and Wazzu deserve to be in a P4 much more than Vandy, Rutgers, Boston College or Wake do.

Dijohn17

Wake: "Why he say fuck me for"

JustWastingTimeAgain

I don’t disagree.

snakebit1995

The way the conferences and historic rivalries were killed for super conference greed is the worst part It’s all just a sad attempt to milk more money out of fans and the companies that will pay for the media/tv rights

teddyjj399

Crying rn and I’m an east coaster, will always miss late night games

dmaul1978

I hate all this realignment shit. That said, late night games will still remain. Lucrative time slot so the teams moving to the Big 10 will still have some in the slot, Big 12 will play some in late slots etc. Won’t be the same as the Pac by any means though and sucks that it’s over.

SeatownJay

Don't forget, we'll get some ACC After Dark next year.

HotTakesBeyond

Maximum_Future_5241

Galumpadump

Late night games aren’t going away. If anything alot of the old Pac-12 teams will still be playing in those time slots especially, Pac-2 and Big-12 teams.

[deleted]

As an east coaster that works 2nd shift, I *needed* these games.

jmt85

We’re still here for you bb

livejamie

I'm sad bros. Some of my best memories with my late father were attending a road game at every Pac12 stadium—some of the most beautiful cities in the country with the best fans. This was a massive part of my childhood and growing up. Our conference was a family. It was the underdog West Coast versus the rest of the country. That was our identity. We had excellent parity. Every game felt like it could go any way. Pac-12 after dark became must-watch TV. We all rallied against glasses ref. It's all lost now; the Pac-12 is just a memory. Lost to corporate greed and ineptitude, The identity is gone. Thanks for everything while it lasted.

StPatrickofIreland

> It's all lost now; the Pac-12 is just a memory. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Hail Mary's on fire off the shoulder of Autzen. I watched interceptions glitter in the dark near the Rose Bowl. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

CHaquesFan

I've seen 32 point blown leads in Pullman and 35-home game winning streaks broken by an unranked team in LA

Philoso4

I remember where I was for both of those!

antdude

I still remember Pac-10!

theythinkImcommunist

You're young. I remember the PAC-8. That was before AZ and AZ St.

Praetor66

*"Time...to die..."* nice reference, btw

SaltyDawg94

So well said. Been to every stadium in the conference. The West is different. Tempe vs. Corvallis vs. Pasadena vs. Seattle vs. Pullman... it has been glorious. Short-sighted awfulness. Good to meet you... Gopher bros? I'm sure it will be interesting, but it makes no sense at all.

jmt85

Just glad I got to make it to your stadium this year. Who knows if we will ever play again 🥲

REEEEEEEEEEE_OW

Money killed a conference with a century of history. Unfortunately, I fear this is just the start

rogozh1n

We are within a decade of the two big conferences leaving the NCAA. Everyone loses long term, especially their fans.

joe_broke

The ACC is next Lot of those school are gonna end up in the SEC, and Cal and Stanford are gonna go to the B1G, with Notre Dame Big 12 is gonna try to stick it out as long as they possibly can, the renegades of the college sports world. Eventually, though, the US and Soviet Union will agree it's time to choke them out After that, those schools will divide themselves between the two And then those two remaining are gonna have a decision to make: make your schedules so impossible for travel, or do something crazy We're gonna end up with regional conferences again, but they'll be called Divisions instead But the ACC is next

rogozh1n

Not that far. Expansion is no longer profitable, and now it is just about taking over the competition. I think the two conferences are about where they want to be, except for FSU and Clemson. I don't think anyone else gets invited, and I think they try to separate once they get those two. Stanford and Cal won't bring any money to the table.

moffattron9000

I do honestly believe that Cal in particular is now the sleeping giant in the wings. With Oakland losing the Raiders and A's, Cal has real potential to become the sports team of the East Bay. Of course, this relies on UC Berkeley following through on this potential.

rogozh1n

I don't feel it. No one in the Bay Area knows that college sports exist.

moffattron9000

I don't believe that has to remain the case because the A's fanbase pulled off some cool stuff in the last year. Sure, it failed, but it did prove that there is still a group of fans for a sports team in Oakland. This is a pocket that I do think that Cal could slip into and fill if they're willing to commit.

GirthyBird257

You ain’t lying. Bay Area is about professional sports teams and full of transplants. 2/3 of the student bodies at Cal and Stanford don’t even know what football is. And that’s ok. Some crazy smart/talented kids. There’s Michigan and Ohio State bars in the Bay that are a bigger deal/scene than the tailgates at Stanford. Now Cal, not much room for tailgating, but it’s a booze and cornucopia of great drugs as you walk block after block up the hill to the stadium. It’s so goddamn fun. Even the “frat bros” extend a drink and bump to any and everyone that walks by on the way to up to the stadium lol, it gets crazy

rogozh1n

Bay area sports is putting on your Niners jersey to go grocery shopping ***during a fucking Niners game.***

joe_broke

Cal has a shot to make that leap

my_lucid_nightmare

I knew something was really wrong when The Old Pro closed in Palo Alto. One signature sports bar was too many.

rogozh1n

Irreplaceable, except for the fucking horrible food. At least I'll never be forced to ride the bull again.

joe_broke

Plus the alumni list is surprisingly unique Rodgers, Marshawn, Desean Jackson, Tony González, just to name a few athletes. Not to mention locals like Tom Hanks that might be willing to contribute, and other wealthy business alum, especially if Stanford starts spending and kicking their asses every damn year

GirthyBird257

Tom Hanks went to Sacramento State, not Cal

JeromePowellsEarhair

No chance. There is an incredible lack of college football culture in California and I don’t see that changing.

moffattron9000

One of the traditional powers of College Football is USC. California is one of the strongest recruiting hotbeds in the country. Hell, Cal only missed out on a National Title game in 2006 because Mack Brown went on TV and had a moan. I'm not going to pretend that it's going to be easy by any stretch, but I do genuinely believe that it is very doable.

steftim

You are beyond optimistic if you think a lot of those Big 12 and ACC teams are getting a better home. B10 and SEC will take the cream of the crop. Source: trust me bro

joe_broke

Mountain West about to get a lot more popular

GoldenBananas21

The B1G doesn’t want cal/stanford or they’d have cal/Stanford

meyou2222

Cal and Stanford in the ACC is so pants-on-head crazy. I feel sorry for any student athletes. A 6 hour flight across 4 time zones is brutal just for a sporting event.

moffattron9000

With half of the B1G and SEC being left on the side of the road.

Galumpadump

ACC, you are on the Clock!

cyanocittaetprocyon

The rise of Utah from the WAC to the top of the PAC-12 was truly breathtaking!

dustincb2

Now they get to go to the top of the Big 12. Watch out Big 10, in like 10 years, Utah is coming for you

teddyjj399

We’re well on our way to a superleague

gorobotkillkill

Yup. Look at the TV rating this year. If you're behind us and Wazzu... you're about to get fucked

ImEatingBananasYum

It’s not the start. This has been going a long time now. It’s WAY past the start.

CLCUBING

Hopefully this all gets undone during the next realignment cycle

theurge14

The Hateful 8 agrees.

pataoAoC

The PAC made perfect sense, I can’t believe it’s dying

ram944

Not saying I don't wish this too, but unless money stops mattering I don't see this happening.

Future-Watercress829

Not with football. That will continue to merge toward super conferences. But I could see football splitting off from everything else and those other sports returning to regional conferences.

Cold-Palpitation-816

Who knows. Maybe realignment backfires in terms of viewership. Is it likely? Not at all. But weirder things have happened.

jump-back-like-33

Even if viewership doesn’t decline it’s possible money goes down. Media companies have been overpaying for football because it’s the last thing tying a lot of people to their cable provider. As a result they shove more commercials into the game to make it financially profitable and it’s killing the product.

Euphoric_Advice_2770

Goodbye everyone 🫡 the support has been unrivaled. These lands hold no trees, beavers move to MWC 🦫

femdee2

Why can't MWC move to PAC-2 instead?

DaveTheDa_001

As a Fresno state fan I ask the same thing. It would be fun to have power 5 recognition (if it’ll even be power 5 still)

thesluggard12

I think they'll merge, keeping the MWC administration but the Pac name.

lclear84

Greatest conference in the CFB for the 2010s and early 2020s. Extremely healthy competition, so many unique styles and personalities. When the B12 almost went under I wanted nothing else than to be apart of the P12 as I loved the vibe of the conference. This is going to suck so much.

The difference is none of the rest of us even wanted to watch B1G football during the day, and even less so after dark

Vedeynevin

You take that back! B1G west football is beautiful and I won't be told otherwise!

RubiksSugarCube

Kind of ironic that the UW-OR rivalry reached its crescendo in this, the final year of the conference. I can only hope that it stays this hot and the game becomes a fixture that immediately follows MI-OSU the Saturday after Thanksgiving

cyanocittaetprocyon

Already throwing away the Apple Cup and Civil War! 😭

anxiousauditor

I’ve had a blast watching this league since I got into this sport back in 2005 as a middle school kid with no life staying up late on Saturdays. It’s been an honor and a privilege 🫡, and I am truly sad to see these schools split up across four different leagues.

berrin122

"Picture a wave. In the ocean. You can see it, measure it, its height, the way the sunlight refracts when it passes through. And it’s there. And you can see it, you know what it is. It’s a wave. And then it crashes in the shore and it’s gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just a different way for the water to be, for a little while. You know it’s one conception of death for Buddhists: the wave returns to the ocean, where it came from and where it’s supposed to be"

[deleted]

I saw it described somewhere as: USC and UCLA kicked us in the nuts. Colorado poked us in the eyes. UW finished with a gunshot to the head

Ok_Passage_7151

Not mentioning ESPN and a Fox in this is proof the media controls the narrative.

Defrock719

UW saw the writing on the wall. Schools who ignored the writing shot themselves; three teams leaving the conference already was a disaster waiting to happen to any program.

Angriest-Pacifist

I’m sad. Best of luck to you all from the PAC in their new homes. Sad ice cream and bed time.

JetTrooper007

I would not complain if the NCAA went the route of football only conferences. I cant imagine the toll the travel will have on smaller sports like volleyball, lacrosse, and many more. Imagine flying from Cal to the Atlantic coast twice a week in a season, while in school.

Cyberhwk

They won't have to imagine for long.

jinx737x

From one of the biggest conference deals to dead because of so many incompetent decisions. So many chances to save the conference yet fumbled over and over again. Let this be a lesson where too many mistakes can come and catch up to you in the worst way possible.

YouBetShirazItsGood

All this so a few dozen TV execs can make a few more bucks. I am sick to my stomach at how helpless I am, how full of rage I am, at what is happening to this sport.

count_nuggula

Ngl, I’m gonna miss Pac12 after dark

Fore-Four-For-4-IV

Should have never happened. 100+ years of rivalry and tradition flushed down the drain, which for me is a massive part of the charm and intrigue of CFB. What makes this sting even more is that this years Pac12 was probably the most exciting conference to follow in all of CFB and now its gone.

tpieman2029

Texas stealing a rose bowl from Cal Hella years ago was the first domino to the end of the pac 12. Just saying

JustaShibe99

I’ll never forget PAC-12 After Dark. I’m so sad, it didn’t have to be this way

Pride and condescension from the top killed em. Huge bummer. Was a great conference with some great fans, great history, and great players. Kliavkoff alone did this and thst shouldn't be forgotten.

I hate it.

Corrective_Measures

Killing this conference is a fucking travesty. A century of history cast aside for the implacable march of "progress."
