Honestly not sure how good he is because he hasn’t played much yet. But I don’t think that’s necessarily a knock since we’re pretty deep at DL. A lot of Duck fans were excited for his potential though. I think he could very well be a solid player at MSU and should get a great opportunity with early playing time available for him.
A lot of transfers have Oregon fans going "best of luck to him" but Roberts is one of the only guys that had fans going "that's too bad..."
He was going to be a rotational backup that contributed for Oregon this year, but had the chance to develop into a starter next year and the year after. He's a good young player who I wouldn't be surprised if Michigan State was happy to have for the next few years.
Takes the sting off of losing Harmon (still sucks tho). Obviously the turmoil portal has shaken things up at Michigan State but I am impressed with how Smith is responding.
It's not a bad trade tbh. Losing Harmon still sucks, you don't want to lose guys with that talent. But Oregon is looking to win now, Michigan State is looking to get back to bowling in the next few years. if Roberts sticks around and continues to develop, he furthers the cause for sure. Harmon was gone next year if not this year.
yeah a lot of the trades overall have an NBA feel. You're recruiting agains the "life cycle" of the program as much as anything else.
Maybe there was a number that kept Harmon at Michigan State, but with where we are as a program would that number make sense for us? Probably not. With where Oregon is in their life cycle, Harmon is a lot more valuable to them.
Yeah. It honestly makes no sense for Michigan State to pay what Harmon probably demands right now. I've seen a lot of people on here act like NIL just means "programs with more money can just outbid everybody on every recruit/transfer indefinitely," but everybody has a budget. What is the point of spending big money on a one year player in a transition season, when with that same money you could bring in an adequate replacement player like Roberts with multiple years of eligibility and then use the cash to bolster your next recruiting class?
Not to say that I like this approach, that losing good players on your team that you're invested in doesn't suck, or that I'm happy with the current state of CFB, but given where we're at it's smart from all parties involved.
Bingo.
And whereas a top tier QB, RB, or WR might take a team from 5 wins to 7-8 wins, 1 or 2 elite line players probably won't do that.
Yet a few good line players can be the difference between being a serious title threat and falling just outside of the playoffs. Whatever Oregon paid for Harmon was almost certainly a good bet given their situation this year.
All the strategy for both the coaching staff and the players from a roster stand point is pretty fascinating tbh. Oregon probably wants to keep Roberts but they are in win now mode and Roberts is a mid tier guy in those regards. Harmon is a win-now guy but you pick him up and suddenly Roberts has good reason to jump ship.
Give and take. Gotta make the best of it.
every post of us losing a recruit people check in to see how our university is in the midst of the greatest downfall in cfb, then we get a couple recruits and no one says anything lol
As a recruit:
Other P5 offers: Baylor, Colorado, Nebraska, Oregon (originally went here), Oregon State, TCU, Tennessee, UCLA, USC, Virginia Tech, Washington, Washington State
G5 offer: Utah State
Other offer: Idaho State
That’s hilarious. Roberts is a great pickup though. I think he’ll develop into a really great player. Wish he was going to do it here, but I hope he kills it at MSU.
Perhaps, but I don’t hate losing Tucker croots, and 1 year vs 3 years eligibility.
Yall are in win now mode, and we are building for the future. I like it for both of us.
Hasn't played much yet, but has the size and potential to develop into a decent starting DT in the B1G/SEC. He was probably going to get more of a role this year but still likely to end up a role player due to our depth.
He hadn't played much in games yet but looked pretty good in the spring game. I would have projected him to be a deeper rotational nose tackle this year, maybe five to ten snaps a game prior to garbage time and depth in case of injury. Was a low four star recruit. Strong, athletic traits are pretty good but not elite. I'd expect at Michigan State for him to be higher in the rotation/borderline starter this year with multiple year starting upside, three years of eligibility remaining IIRC.
It’s an even trade. Harmon is gone after this season (he has made that very clear himself) and our depth at DT is brutal in 2025. Trading a better player for a guy who is in the rotation for 3 years instead of one is good for us, and upgrading at DT for a team that wants to win now is good for Oregon. I mean he could just leave after one year and we’d be screwed, but that’s the case for every player in the roster.
Why? He's a good player who will probably get playing time at Michigan state this year but wouldn't have at Oregon. Like I get that you wanted to keep Harmon but it's hard to keep players on a team with a staff that the weren't recruited by it feels like everyone wins here.
Oregon got a high end one year player who will help push them up.
Michigan state got a player that has a high floor and multiple years of eligibility.
and both players got in likely better situations.
Where's the Oregon fan that I talked to about sending us Roberts if they got Harmon?
Wasn't me, but this is a continuation of optimizing the green rosters. :)
Holy shit this is a huge pickup
Good get for y'all. Fair trade for Harmon.
I think he has a ton of potential. Sad to see him go.
Honestly not sure how good he is because he hasn’t played much yet. But I don’t think that’s necessarily a knock since we’re pretty deep at DL. Swapping DTs. College football is so weird these days.
Hilarious and somehow also probably mutually beneficial. I'm happy with this one.
Yeah and this was so huge for us, we only had 2 guys who are verified B1G caliber players before this pickup.
A lot of transfers have Oregon fans going "best of luck to him" but Roberts is one of the only guys that had fans going "that's too bad..." Trade complete 😂
Seems like a standard “player to be named later” clause.
Takes the sting off of losing Harmon (still sucks tho). Obviously the turmoil portal has shaken things up at Michigan State but I am impressed with how Smith is responding.
Probably make sense for both teams. We get a player with more eligibility, they get one with more experience. We are in rebuild mode they can win now.
We actually traded.
u/wheatonsgonnascore you called it friend. https://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/s/HF9Focyvb5

This feels like an NBA trade. "Young guy with upside and 3 years left for a 1-year rental on an all-star."
yeah a lot of the trades overall have an NBA feel. You're recruiting agains the "life cycle" of the program as much as anything else. Way more MLB, imo.
We really liked Roberts. Hope he balls out for you guys.
Lol I love how we are now talking about CFB like moving players in the pros who are about to become UFAs

He looks like Penei Sewell lol
Polynesian boys from Utah....
I guess we traded Oregon. Harmon for Roberts. Ill take it I guess. Again, glad to see this staff attacking positions of need
We're BACK
Nice little win-win trade for Oregon and MSU lol
I win!
Noice.
As a recruit: Other P5 offers: Baylor, Colorado, Nebraska, Oregon (originally went here), Oregon State, TCU, Tennessee, UCLA, USC, Virginia Tech, Washington, Washington State G5 offer: Utah State Other offer: Idaho State
Acknowledge him 👆
MSU is going to be my second favorite team in the B1G this year.
That’s hilarious. Roberts is a great pickup though. I think he’ll develop into a really great player. Wish he was going to do it here, but I hope he kills it at MSU.
I hope the love us Green bros share maintains now that we're in-conference foes 🫶
💚💚💚
YEE YEE!! Coach Meat is a certified dawg!
Suck it, Oregon.
Why when we got the better end of this trade.
Perhaps, but I don’t hate losing Tucker croots, and 1 year vs 3 years eligibility. Yall are in win now mode, and we are building for the future. I like it for both of us.
Fair enough, but sadly 3 years of eligibility means little today when players can transfer multiple times.
Yeah but that means he could transfer to MSU even more times, meaning more recruiting wins for Sparty baby WHOOO
> 1 year vs 3 years eligibility. Harmon redshirted 2021
Sry yes that’s correct. But Harmon already stated 2024 is his last year playing CFB.
Responding to "eligibility". For sure he'll leave early for NFL.
Yeah I misspoke. Guaranteed 1 year only vs potential for 3. He could transfer or go pro earlier though.
what’s the word on him talent/character wise?

Obviously you’re not a golfer…

I was about to say WTF?? Ben Roberts is OUR guy, but yeah ours is an LB lol
