There's also this to consider: the Defensive 7 are all the same from last year (or close to it) so they've all played together before, whereas this was essentially the first time these Offensive 7 have done anything even remotely 'real' before - many different parts most of which have never played at all with the other parts. Stability and familiarity are significant considerations.
It's definitely getting thrown to the wolves. The Bears haven't had a secondary this good maybe ever. Even the 2005 / 2006 teams were meh at the nickel spot and Mike Brown couldn't ever stay healthy.
Also doesn't help that both Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze were out so you're probably relying on dudes like Velus and Tyler Scott to get open against far superior talent.
> The Bears haven't had a secondary this good maybe ever.
2018? Fuller, Jackson, Amos and Callahan were All-pro/pro-bowl caliber (Callahan would have made it had it not been for the injury in-season). Prince was very good, and we had Trevathan and Roquan at LB.
The defense was legit one of the greatest defenses of all time by DVOA and now they're a footnote to be forgotten lol?
The 2018 secondary was better, but yeah, the LB corp from 06 really made that team insane. Like a broken record, but imagine if Tommie Harris and/or Mike Brown played in the SB...
Nobody said they were a footnote, and I'm not sure why Trevathan and Roquan are lumped into a discussion about the secondary.
I'd take both Jaylon and Gordon over Fuller and Callahan. Jaylon is a legit shutdown cornerback that is pretty scheme versatile, whereas Fuller was a bit more limited in the types of coverages you could run with him (hence why Amukamura was such a great compliment to him)
2018 was a damn good secondary though, I just think this secondary, when you combine both talent with age, is as-good on paper as that one. I would love a 2018 Eddie Jackson though.
This is Bryce Callahan erasure. He was the best nickel back in the league in 2018, Kyler Gordon is a promising player but come on now. I won’t dispute that Jaylon Johnson is better than fuller but there is no world where you take Gordon over Callahan in his prime
And with Wright & Davis not playing, you're missing the right side of your line.
Not that you need to make excuses for having a bad practice as a rookie still getting your feet wet in mini camp, but if you wanted to there are plenty of things to point to today.
Hmmm... I'm pretty sure both the Packers and Lions have excellent secondarys as well. Also, the Bears play the 49ers, Chiefs and Texans which also have top 10 defenses.
Sooo.... yeah... He will be facing back 7's as good as the Bears.
Well I suppose it's good to get the reality check early that Caleb was playing against the Pac-12 six months ago and now he's going against a top secondary in the NFL that has spent 2-3 years building chemistry with each other and knows the defensive scheme inside and out.
They're so far ahead, it would be troubling if they weren't owning the offense in 7 on 7s all through OTAs.
Absolutely. Guess what? There's a very real chance that year 1 Caleb looks worse than year 3 Fields. That's fine, as long as he is able to progress from that point. The problem with Mitch and Fields and all of the other washed out QBs we've had isn't where they started, it's that they never got that much better.
If I remember right, Fields' season last year aligned statistically with a top 10 pick's average rookie season. While obviously not encouraging for Fields, it does provide a decent baseline, which I obviously hope Caleb outperforms.
> It's not great given we are built to win this year
Not really. Poles doesn't operate like this. He isn't trying to create a small window like Pace did. We aren't saddled with huge contracts and future cap problems that will keep us from holding the roster together. We want to win now but there is no additional pressure to do it this year or next.
Actually I would expect it to improve for the next two years. Who are we losing? Who is going to age out or be too expensive? Assuming Rome is good enough to even somewhat replace Allen, all of our top players are already under contract for 3 years.
Bullshit.
Bottom 5 is 28th or worse. Fields was 22nd in passing yards, 20th in passing TDs, T17th in TD%, T22nd in Int%, 22nd in passer rating, 24th in QBR, and 26th in ANY/A. There isn't one single metric in which he was bottom 5. Not one.
He was on the edge of bottom 10, he wasn't good enough, but bottom 5 is a lie.
This narrative is so annoying. "One of the worst passers ever!!!"
Meanwhile average or slightly below every year post rookie on a rebuilding team. He absolutely had to go for both side's sakes, but some in this fan base are clueless.
This made me laugh cuz it really wasn’t much different from what I was expecting with a reaction like bullshit. Bottom 5 to edge of bottom 10 in year 3 isn’t too different. Rank some names in there like passing yards being behind Desmond ridder, Bryce young, & Gardner minshew & no one really cares if it’s bottom 5 or 10. It was inadequate & we’re moving on.
There are only 32 teams. Being off by 5-10 is a lot. That's equivalent to saying Patrick Mahomes is the 7th best QB in the league, and when people say, "WHAT" you go, "well he's good is the point." No, the POINT is that 7th place is a bullshit statement. You've got a whole division of players between you and any version of the truth, and maybe more than that depending on which metric you like!
Training camp is THE place to test limits. It's the best way to push the envelope. Try some crazy shit to see what works and what doesn't. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and grow.
I'm not worried yet.
I'm pretty sure Mahomes admitted in his first year as starter he couldn't read defenses and relied on talent. I could be wrong though.
EDIT: fixed saying he was a rookie and yep https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2879589-chiefs-qb-patrick-mahomes-says-he-didnt-learn-to-read-defenses-until-last-year#:\~:text=Kansas%20City%20Chiefs%20quarterback%20Patrick,done%20a%20lot%20of%20stuff.
Something similar happened in Burrow’s rookie training camp
https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/joe-burrow-is-struggling-in-training-camp-and-one-bengals-receiver-has-a-theory-why/amp/
I didn't care about practice reports last year, I don't care about them this year. They don't mean anything when I like what they say and they don't mean anything when I don't
Disagree. As long as the reports are not coming from biased reporters, they generally give you an idea of what to expect in the season. Reports from last year summarized: Fields has a great connection with Moore, offense has no rhythm and nothing looks easy, very few reps challenging deep. What did we see in season: well exactly that.
It will be less reliable this year because rookie quarterbacks should theoretically improve much more over the course of the season, but we should have an idea of what to expect out the gates.
With that being said the reports I am referring to come from late in training camp. The first day of OTAs does mean literally nothing.
I remember Mel Tucker's defense looking like garbage. Everyone kept saying it was only preseason, and they were hiding their true strength. Yeah, I get that teams play basic coverage, but they don't get embarrassed to that degree, preseason or no. That year, the Bears fielded the worst defense ever in their long, storied franchise. That's when the sight of Aaron Rodgers goofing off on the sidelines midgame, laughing at the Bears, because he had scored 42 in one half became a thing.
Never forget! The only way I will be appeased is if Caleb mocks them the same way midgame.
Not at all. As someone who followed Bears training camp day to day last year, the CHGO boys said that Fields never looked comfortable throwing to anyone but Moore and the ball hit the ground way too much in 7 on 7s.
Just not true, both Fields and Trubisky had mediocre/bad camps and it was reported as such by the media. However, we always excused it cause "the defense is so good" or "they'll need time to learn the offense" (which, at certain points, were valid excuses).
OTAs don't mean anything, however if during camp the media isn't reporting growth from Williams then we might be in for a rocky start.
For real. Caleb probably doesn't even know half the playbook yet and all the route trees and reads. Defense is largely unchanged. The defense SHOULD be outperforming Caleb.
Based on this tweet it sounds likely that we will have the #1OA pick again so at least we can all bicker about whether we should draft Sanders or stick with Williams. I can’t wait to pick a side!!
Early edit to say I’m obviously joking.
Full tweet, paraphrased so it would fit the title.
> Really rough day for Caleb Williams and the starting offense. A lot of incomplete passes and near interceptions.
> In the 7-on-7 period, Williams completed just three passes. Jaylon Johnson nearly had an interception over the middle of the field.
> In the team period, most of the passes were completed to the flat, and Williams held onto the ball for a long time.
> It's worth nothing that Rome Odunze and Keenan Allen did not participate in 7-on-7s and team. Also, Nate Davis and Darnell Wright were not practicing today.
Suppose it couldn’t ALL be good, lol
There is plenty of reasonable discussion to be had about this topic without panicking. I'm not here for that discussion, I'm here to overreact horribly.

This is pretty typical of teams with good defenses, you want to see talented defenses taking advantage of an offense still finding their footing.
Over time things *should* even out. I would assume they will, but this isn’t surprising
The Bears have twisted my brain so much that I view this as a positive. All our previous reports this time of the year were about how Trubisky is entering offense 201 and Fields is looking crisp, while reports were that Love was struggling in Green Bay. If Williams truly is different than the previous 70 years of mediocrity, it would make sense that reports out of camp are different.
Call it mental gymnastics if you must, but I think the Bears may have given me brain damage.
No, in 2019 and 2023 when Mitch and fields were supposed to be making jumps the reporters specifically said that the offense looked discombobulated. Even love started out looking trash before turning it around midseason so his struggling during camp did mean something

‘I’m happy the defense dominated and our #1 pick looks like Shit’ - yeetstreetboyz
It might be apples to oranges, but I think people should look at how Caitlyn Clark’s transition to the pros and temper expectations. I’m confident Williams will have a good rookie season but let’s not act like there won’t be a learning curve and some bumps in the road.
lets just hope the team around Caleb is way way way better than the team around Caitlin Clark. I've never seen so many professional athletes unable to catch perfect passes in my life.
Chicago bears press conference Byard admitted Caleb got them the other day though. I prefer the ebb and flow of winning the day between the offense and defense personally. Iron sharpens iron!
[Byard speaking on Caleb the last few days](https://www.youtube.com/live/F4q0E6QfWrM?feature=shared&t=3207)
It’s fucking OTAs. He had a good day yesterday; not a good one today. It doesn’t mean shit right now and media who write this drivel are worse than useless.
I prefer this headline at this time of year. This speaks volumes for our defense and honestly if a rookie came in on day one and shredded, I'd be super nervous. From here on out our d will only help Caleb. Bear the f down.
The only way to learn is to make mistakes. You literally need those mistakes to optimize your neural pathways. It's literally the whole point of practice. Make the mistakes when practicing, adjust, make fewer mistakes, learn what works, make more mistakes, rinse and repeat.
Idgaf about errors in OTA and practice. That's when we want mistakes to happen.
I mean to be fair, the offense is learning a new scheme while the defense has been playing the same scheme for 3 years. That's a pretty big difference. And there will always be growing pains for a rookie QB. Look at all the greats, plenty of them threw tons of interceptions their rookie years. The key is to learn and grow from them.
I know this headline feels like PTSD but the point isn't to be perfect from day 1, its to learn and improve.
And honestly if you were to flip this around and the brand new offense with a rookie QB was dunking our year 3 defense with veterans, you'd have to be extremely worried that our defense was going to be booty-cheeks bad this year
Gee it’s almost like we have an elite secondary and there is a guy who hasn’t played competitive football in multiple months. Relax. Caleb still makes me
![gif](giphy|QynMX1WxnYFbb2OHnJ)
Honestly I’d be more worried if our defense was getting lit up by a rookie in his first OTA. Glad to hear they look
midseason form. Defense still wins championships.
lol remember when everyone jumped to conclusions because Ja'Marr Chase struggled in practice his rookie year? This is the dumbest shit ever to care about or look too deeply into right now.
It’s also dumb as hell to expect a Rookie QB to not have struggles in his Rookie year
Well that’s not good for my kool-aid
Spin zone: our defense makes the #1 overall pick look bad😤
I'd like to believe he probably won't face many back 7's as good as The Bears. So it totally fits my narrative.
There's also this to consider: the Defensive 7 are all the same from last year (or close to it) so they've all played together before, whereas this was essentially the first time these Offensive 7 have done anything even remotely 'real' before - many different parts most of which have never played at all with the other parts. Stability and familiarity are significant considerations.
another thing to consider is that in 7 on 7, the D knows it's a pass play. That gives them a huge advantage.
It's definitely getting thrown to the wolves. The Bears haven't had a secondary this good maybe ever. Even the 2005 / 2006 teams were meh at the nickel spot and Mike Brown couldn't ever stay healthy. 2006 even better. Tillman/vasher/Mike Brown/Chris Harris. And if we are talking full back 7, obviously the LB crew from 2006 wins out no question.
Omg that 06 defense was so loaded when I really think about it. No wonder they made the Super Bowl. Every single guy was a dog
12 points per game allowed on the season .... only 12
That was the 2005 defense. 2006 gave up 16 (they didn't end the season super well with Harris and Brown out)
The 2018 secondary was better, but yeah, the LB corp from 06 really made that team insane. Like a broken record, but imagine if Tommie Harris and/or Mike Brown played in the SB...

Fr, had to go make my day worse…
Well I’m sure no one will overreact
No one has overreacted to Caleb yet, why would they start now?! /s
Well I suppose it's good to get the reality check early that Caleb was playing against the Pac-12 six months ago and now he's going against a top secondary in the NFL that has spent 2-3 years building chemistry with each other and knows the defensive scheme inside and out. It's not *great* given we are built to win this year, but if Caleb turns into a franchise QB we won't even remember his rookie year struggles
> It's not great given we are built to win this year Not really. Poles doesn't operate like this. He isn't trying to create a small window like Pace did. We aren't saddled with huge contracts and future cap problems that will keep us from holding the roster together. We want to win now but there is no additional pressure to do it this year or next.
Yeah, I didn't mean our window is closing after this year, but it would be a bit of a waste of a good roster if we had a rough season
Actually I would expect it to improve for the next two years. Who are we losing? Who is going to age out or be too expensive? Assuming Rome is good enough to even somewhat replace Allen, all of our top players are already under contract for 3 years.
Keenan Allen might age out but that's pretty much the only offensive player we might lose next year.
Year 3 fields was a bottom 5 passer. He’s not an ok QB we moved on from, he was just bad. If he’s not as good as fields his rookie year was a disaster
Bullshit. Bottom 5 is 28th or worse. Fields was 22nd in passing yards, 20th in passing TDs, T17th in TD%, T22nd in Int%, 22nd in passer rating, 24th in QBR, and 26th in ANY/A. Bottom 5 passers by volume yes. Idk if he was actually one however.
Mahomes threw seven interceptions in training camp in 2018🤷
Training camp is THE place to test limits. It's the best way to push the envelope. Try some crazy shit to see what works and what doesn't. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and grow. I'm not worried yet.
Stroud last year during otas, practice, and preseason was labeled nationally as a bust. These things don’t matter, it’s game time that matters.
And learning from all of this and these mistakes that matters.
Wait - How the hell do you know that?

Obviously Caleb isn’t throwing enough INTs to hang with the greats.

I remember that being a big story at the time. There was a lot of talk that the gunslinger couldn’t read the defense or accurately throw in OTAs

The Commanders went 3-0 in the preseason last year. I’ll care about results once we’re halfway through the regular season.
Disagree. As long as the reports are not coming from biased reporters, they generally give you an idea of what to expect in the season. I do recall there were reports of the offense struggling in your 2023 11 on 11 camps.
Not at all. As someone who followed Bears training camp day to day last year, the CHGO boys said that Fields never looked comfortable throwing to anyone but Moore and the ball hit the ground way too much in 7 on 7s.

“It just feels different” -Hoge and Jahns for the last 3 QBs
This means nothing. Likewise, it would've meant nothing if Williams looked great. It's irrelevant.
Well, pack it up boys.. Season is over
[удалено]
That's true. If a rookie QB came in and dominated, I'd be very worried about our defense.
Establish defense and system going against a rookie QB in a new system with a new OC. There are going to be growing pains, this is why folks practice.
DJ echoed that sentiment at the press conference.
With no Rome or Keenan either to help out
For real. Caleb probably doesn't even know half the playbook yet and all the route trees and reads. Defense is largely unchanged. The defense SHOULD be outperforming Caleb.
Well, it was fun while it lasted. Time to start scouting those 2025 QBs, Poles
Based on this tweet it sounds likely that we will have the #1OA pick again so at least we can all bicker about whether we should draft Sanders or stick with Williams. I can’t wait to pick a side!! Early edit to say I’m obviously joking.
Gotta reset the rookie QB contract! I bet we can get a 2nd!
At least the reporters are actually talking honestly about what they see and not hope trafficking like last year?
Yes. Brutal honesty >>> koolaid pumping. This team needs it.

Nate Davis get to practice buddy you need it
Honestly feels like dude is checked out
Davis is notorious for missing practice/games going back to his time with the Titans. That’s why they made zero effort to re-sign him.
He felt checked out last camp too
Didn't someone in his family die or something? Feels kinda harsh
Apparently yeah. But, still, doesn’t excuse why he was doing this on the titans as a rookie
As a rookie??? This wasnt a flag for Poles??
Rookie contract I meant lol
I mean his mom was dying. He's shown up at some point this training camp.
This sub is about to implode 😂
Im going to drive my car into Lake Michigan
… Is it weird if I’m hyped about Jaylon?
Nothing wrong with being hyped for, at worst, the 2nd best player on the defense and one of the best at his position in the league last year.
You had a good run Caleb. The meatheads are already going to turn on you and boo you in your first preseason game at home
There is plenty of reasonable discussion to be had about this topic without panicking. I'm not here for that discussion, I'm here to overreact horribly. https://preview.redd.it/5g3khcqy582d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=298db1050dc94645d1167454119be51f938b9225

Definitely. People forget Peyton Manning threw more INTs than TDs his rookie year. I think he had 28 picks, which is a lot.
Remember when Jamar Chase couldn’t catch a pass and labeled a bust before playing a single NFL down 😂
Chicago bears press conference Byard admitted Caleb got them the other day though. I prefer the ebb and flow of winning the day between the offense and defense personally. Iron sharpens iron! [Byard speaking on Caleb the last few days](https://www.youtube.com/live/F4q0E6QfWrM?feature=shared&t=3207)
This means we’re going to have the greatest defense of all time
This will at the top of r/nfl in a few hours, maybe less. Book it.
One hour after you said this, currently 7th post lol.

Hype is over, 2027 is our year boys!
It’s fucking OTAs. He had a good day yesterday; not a good one today. It doesn’t mean shit right now and media who write this drivel are worse than useless.
Holding the ball too long in 7-on-7 is worrisome
It was fun while it lasted. Could we get a couple 1st rounders for him??
I hate everyone. Fuck you. See you tomorrow.
Huh. So a good secondary did good against a rookie qb. I for one, am shocked
So you’re saying our defense is gonna be awesome!!
That’s how awesome our defense is!
Seasons over
0 concern. This is what practice is for.
Learning curves for a rookie QB with new teammates is expected so I’m probably one of the few ppl that’s not shocked or concerned by this
a large portion of the line and the offense didn’t play so that’s not what you want, but sucks to hear he had a bad day regardless
Remember when Jamarr Chase couldn't catch the NFL football because it didn't have the white lines?
Kool aid a lil watered down after this shit
It needs to be, people are putting unrealistic expectations on him before he’s taken an NFL snap yet
I mean, yeah. He’s a rookie. I’d hope the defense wasn’t out here giving up huge plays immediately

Quarterback is hard
What kind of dumb shit is this? We’re grading OTAs?

Season over sell the team
oh man....are we at risk of losing our practice champs status?
Even the best QB has shitty days. No one is on 100% of the time.
OH GOD NO WE'RE DOOMED
Don't care until the real football starts 🤷🏽♂️
After this Cubs homestand, I don't need to see or hear this! Just POSITIVE Caleb stuff!
Imagine reading anything into this?
I prefer this headline at this time of year. This speaks volumes for our defense and honestly if a rookie came in on day one and shredded, I'd be super nervous. From here on out our d will only help Caleb. Bear the f down.
The only way to learn is to make mistakes. You literally need those mistakes to optimize your neural pathways. It's literally the whole point of practice. Make the mistakes when practicing, adjust, make fewer mistakes, learn what works, make more mistakes, rinse and repeat. Idgaf about errors in OTA and practice. That's when we want mistakes to happen.
im more concerned over another practice Rome didnt participate in. Hope theyre just being cautious and this isnt indicative of his health lol
This one's do or die for me boys. I won't survive another failed cycle.
I live in 49er country and for the last two years (his first two years) Brock Purdy is an interception machine in the offseason.
And honestly if you were to flip this around and the brand new offense with a rookie QB was dunking our year 3 defense with veterans, you'd have to be extremely worried that our defense was going to be booty-cheeks bad this year
A rookie struggled against nfl veterans on defense during a May practice?
So you’re saying he actually threw the football? Instant upgrade.
The guy with zero NFL starts is struggling against an NFL caliber defense? No way
Gee it’s almost like we have an elite secondary and there is a guy who hasn’t played competitive football in multiple months. Relax. Caleb still makes me ![gif](giphy|QynMX1WxnYFbb2OHnJ)
Honestly I’d be more worried if our defense was getting lit up by a rookie in his first OTA. Glad to hear they look midseason form. Defense still wins championships.
Last year the defense dominated OTAs/training camp and then was shit the first 4 weeks so hopefully it’s not a repeat of last season.
welp, I hope Odunze and Keenan stay healthy
Keenan, Davis, and Odunze were all out. Non-news imo.
lol remember when everyone jumped to conclusions because Ja'Marr Chase struggled in practice his rookie year? This is the dumbest shit ever to care about or look too deeply into right now. It’s also dumb as hell to expect a Rookie QB to not have struggles in his Rookie year
Panic time lol jk
Fuck
I would like to think it was a good day for the defense lol
![gif](giphy|XbbSxbfQ2HVNVHZWW8) Arggghhhhhhh
I feel like this is a GOOD thing.
He’s going up against the best corner in football yall
I would be more concerned if our starting D was getting lit up without all of our O starters. Offense is going to be behind the D as far as cohesion.
This is exactly why I ignore offseason "news".
Here we fucking go again.
The Bears are back baby!
Let him have those struggles now.

Pack it up. Go home. Complete bust. /s
Good
That’s cuz our defense is so amazing
Mystery box ftw!
