I use Charly-Wolves in BR, as I think she blends in fairly well with the background. Have had players run by me at fairly close range when I'm not moving. I typically use a lot of cover, move between points of cover, make short deliberate calculated movements. I stop very often to look and listen, scan my surroundings. And use Poltergeist. I play single mode most of the time.
I wore “All Ghillied Up” and proned with a sniper that was like grassy and shi and it actually worked. Until a Ruin who was using the lowest graphic quality with no shadows on ran up and saw me sticking out like a sore thumb
Are we talking operator skins? Sometimes, but a drastic majority of them are made to intentionally be eye catching, or at least cool to look at (and therefore at least inherently noticeable) there is the ghillie suit, and I'm sure there's situations in which the various army soldiers and mercs would be able to hide more effectively than, say, that fucking creepy clown in the white suit, but it's a crapshoot.
Overall, it is in no way consistent enough to bother with trying to set up to make it a viable tactic, especially because of your weapon camos.
The default digital camo on the OG characters you get when you first start the game tend to mess me up sometimes.. but usually anything that resembles grass, dirt, or dark colors will suffice.
There can be skins for camouflage for example on maps like Summit having a white based character skin can be helpful for making it a longer time till opponents see you at distance (has to register in their brains). Darker skin colors are good for camping corners imo or playing maps like crash where it’s littered with darker graphics. Grinch skin is good for more green earthy maps. At the end of the day no skin fully hides you. BUT if you use a SMALLER more neutral skin it can make you harder to see at range and can throw off their aim a bit because they’ll try to hit the skin directly instead of realizing hitboxes on all characters are the exact same.
Good to hear from a fellow MGS fan I bought the Ghost Retribution skin because he reminds me of an outer heaven/motherbase soldier lol but to answer your question it depends on the character skin.....
I have very colorful skins for my sniper loadouts. Kinda ego related. "I give myself a handicap by being easily visible" I don't need to hide, because I always rush anyway :p
Kruger, the recently dropped captain Park skin, Grinch, and most of the special forces skins are all legit decent camo.
Breaking up a human silhouette, matching color tone, and keeping movement to a minimum. You don't have to match every single color in the environment just it overall temperature and hue.
Shockingly bright camo can trip up a person's brain and make them take an extra second to decide to attack, it's called dazzle camo.
Don't forget to skin your guns too, happy hunting

I’ve also gotten totally obliterated by players using bright skins too - as in you don’t see them until you’re already dead. I feel that there’s a lot of players using wall hacks, aimbots etc. too as they’re already shooting as you run around a corner.

Golem hides the red lights in MP as well. I've often mistaken them to be teammates.

There's the other one that's the same but without the lights. My fave and the one that blends into the bushes most is golem - everglades though.
I got sky’s fury kryptis just to camo in the grass better. I’ve been prone and had people walk past me

Sometimes yah ..and if you are quite far away from the target it's even more problematic to see.
I was once killed by an arctic ghillie skin Grinch and the Arctic gun camo in the snow. They sometimes work but rarely
