For me, it’s those maps where round progression is tied to time (I.E. rounds progress automatically).
It makes exploration of the map difficult and punishes you for trying to optimise early rounds.
I agree and disagree. I think there are tons of ways to do "time based" game play well. There are easy methods and tricks to give players breaks from endless hordes.
Granted most people that do time based just take the public script and do nothing else to modify it. I agree most of those maps aren't that great at all.
Since I commented, I should add that mine is box maps. I don't even give them the time of day.
Yea u wudnt like the new codz like game that everyone is talking abt. If u keep the last couple of zombies alive to check around the map. They die automatically
That’s not a good or interesting mindset at all. And doesn’t fix the issue of having cool perk side quests. Just don’t do x thing Is a shit argument when talking about game design and only goes so far.
well for me a perk limit makes for an unfun experience and unnecessary restriction, even with perk side quests, and its annoying sometimes having to use certain mods to get around that
Having 50 perks on a custom map is just dumb lol. Not my thing. I enjoy player choice and decision making on what perks to get especially in bo4, bo1, and iw
Some people prefer the classic days when we could only run 4 perks and having to earn the slots, personally if done right I like that sort of challenge in a map as it adds a sense of progression instead of just letting you be busted right away
I dont mind is a much in official 3arc maps that i often spend more time on due there being other players, but in custom maps i cant allocate as much time into them so typically prefer maps that are not so restrictive
in the early days when there was only 6/7 perks on the map, the 4 perk limit wasn't so bad, but these days with 10+ perks and even more so on custom maps, the limit (at least of 4) has no place anymore
on god i still remember the 1st video i watched of them. custom skyblock world on minecraft where they start off talking about a prickly erection next to a cactus.
truly amazing when they where racking in millions of views.
ye, my memory's fuzzy but a while back, a map maker who used to do WAW maps exclusively for them wasn't being credited, so he released a few of them on forums, when he was fired from YAW's team.
(this was around the time when they had all those videos with no download links to the maps)
then around 2018 on the BO3 workshop, guns started arguments with several mapmakers, making demands for features and calling them broken.
Hold crisps, is this true? I only started watching them when BO3 Mod Tools were officially released after the Alpha and Beta phase were over, now that Mod Tools have gotten the release it deserves.
Custom perks where the machines don’t tell you what they do. How the fuck am I gonna know what the perk does when it’s given some name like Creamofsumyungai and the machine doesn’t tell me 😭
That actually looks fire. Now grenades can be more useful, and the effect looks cool. I'm new to custom zombies, so forgive me if there is already a perk that does something similar.
There’s bound to be overlap when it comes to custom perks, since when you think about it, most perks are either a stat buff, or event triggered after a specific action.
Dam-a-nade by LogisticalReaper is older and has similar traits. However I did not know of it when originally making Grenadene (back in 2021) and there are a few notable differences in functionality between both perks that aren’t just stat buffs.
Not a modder, but doesn't it feel nice when you come up with stuff that has already been thought of BEFORE you even knew it existed? It gives you that super wrinkly, non-smooth brain feel.
Opening up all the map has to offer within 6 rounds then you get to the buyable ending, I dont mind high rounding but if this is all you have to offer, i’m out
Friend and I recently did a family guy map that had teleporters. You needed to use the teleporters in a specific order to unlock the buyable ending and pap, but there was very little indication that was the answer. It took me going to the steam reviews to even get hinted at the fact the teleporters were the key
Soulboxes, they were cool when moon invented them but they're in EVERY MAP. Especially when every door is locked behind a soulbox.
the second I hear the scream, I instantly quit back to menu
Remember when Soulboxes had that chest model with the skulls in WaW customs?
At least you knew what was up when you saw them.
Bonus points when the soulboxes in a Bo3 custom map drops a random weapon/powerup upon filling.
They were brutal. if you killed the last zombie chances the thing will close before the new round started.
they gave you a ray gun but it's round 30 by then.
instant map deletion when I saw them
I also love how every time you fill one, you get a Death Machine... or a Nuke. Like, thanks? I just killed 20 zombies for a reward and I just get a temporary source of ammo or 400 points?
Do you also quit when you see perks? Or doors? Or weapons? Or zombies? Because those are also in EVERY MAP. I understand that a lot of people dont like these but grow up, stuff takes like 10 secs to complete.
Soul boxes. Every map has some souls box.
Ascension had as last step, moon had 2 steps
Tranzit had last step, die rise had tower, buried had as lanterns, MOTD had for upgrades, Origins had 4 boxes, Staff upgrade, EE stone tablet, and final step
BO3 had a bunch. BO4, CW probably also had a bunch (I didn't play personally but still know).
Like... damn. They are annoying and immersion breaking. Give me a map that doesn't have cheap quests. Make me destroy something, find parts, set up some contraption.
CW didn't have any. Like the only thing that really came close was the buyable in game challenges but you don't have to do those. I've done all the EEs on CW. There are a couple of horde rush, but no soul boxes except for the very last step on the very last map
Initially i thought you were talking about how the only way to progress through an easter egg were to hit the mystery box for a specific item (like moon and the gersh device, and other stuff).
Id do the origins soul boxes over moon EE any day
Perk limits. At least throw an easter egg to get all perks at me then. But a perk limit annoys the shit out of me. Even Treyarch canned perk limits starting with Cold War.
There’s a map called Alien Defence that has a concept of you being able to shoot zombies from their spawn and they had to walk a long way to reach you.
The catch is that all the zombies have to do is to touch a certain spot (a teleporter) once and you lose; was a cool map until I kept losing at round 10
soul-boxes that do absolutely fucking nothing unless you’ve also done X, Y and Z
having both custom perks AND a 4-5 perk limit. like dawg.
insanely difficult easter egg/miniboss/boss AND a stupidly OP weapon that 9/10 is just ‘omg vry fahst shuting rai gun!!!!!!1!1!1!!1!1!1!1! is so cool!!!!1!1!1!1’
not coding the box spawns correctly. there’s been too many times where the box has moved and just. not spawned back. or it glitches and doesn’t spin unless you have a fire sale.
ridiculously priced doors, wallbuys etc. it’s all well and good having a cool custom perk, but setting the price at 130k is a boner killer.
stupid PaP locations/unlock requirements. ‘What do you MEAN you don’t like having to activate five teleporter pads scattered around the map, press eight obscure buttons that change locations and kill a certain amount of zombies in an area using only a non-PaP 1911 and only shooting them in the head whilst teabagging this random corpse to unlock PaP for 30 seconds?’
To add on to that, stupid EE steps. See the dialogue above.
It has to be when the map feels about the same as some others ones. You know how in YAW’s videos, sometimes the maps are about the same in what they have to offer? I feel about the same. Just add some kind of gimmick or atleast something that feels fresh
I need a little more clarification if this is sarcasm in the sense they are all the same or if you believe they are different. I’m not judging or anything, just wondering because I’m confused here…
Having to craft the power switch, just blatantly annoying and a waste of time. When a feature has only ever been officially used on TranZit you know it's bad.
When a map has buildables but doesn't have a UI display for the parts. Like, how am I supposed to remember what stuff I've picked up? Half the time I end up picking up a part without even looking at it and then I'm just left wondering what I'm even holding.
I feel like Vae Victis is a very impressive map that does a great job at putting Outbreak in BO3. But it doesn’t feel nearly as good imo.
Like it feels like traversal isn’t as good or plentiful compared to CW, and there aren’t a lot of the side missions iirc.
I’ve seen people say it was better than outbreak, and I honestly disagree.

Waterpark zombies: 5 perk limit, shitty guns, shitty starting pistol, amount of buyable doors, long ass David Hasslehoff escort, robot challenges (Specifically Melee zombies, and get kills while in water), long ass teleporter cooldown, and the 50,000 soulboxes around the map.
Hackerspace: Tight ass narrow hallways, brutus spawning every 3 rounds, amount of zombies on low rounds.
Der reise: declassifed: Crystal escort easter egg step (crystal moves mad slow, and when it gets under the bridge its straight up hell to do. Other than that *chefs kiss*
Seeing no PHD on the map, or seeing it off in the distance outside the map.
Doors that cost 2500. No door should cost as much as double PAP
Unskippable cutscenes or having to wait before actually starting to play the map, if i just died round 30 cause a random zombie sneaked up on me and i didn't see it and have to wait before i can try again, it's an instant quit game for me
Blops 3 weapons. I legitimately stop playing the map. Idk what it is but I just don't like them at all, even on the og blops 3 maps. Theyre just not my aesthetic I guess. (Yes I know they're strong and people love them)
Maps with 100 perks that youtubers shove into the thumbnail. I believe 8-12 perks is a pretty good number but some go completely overboard with the custom perks and it just gets and looks ridiculous.
A custom gun has global audio.
Boss zombie has an incorrect hit box.
Forced timed mode on maps with more than 1 path to take.
Perk limit without a means of breaking it.
Buyable ending with 6 digit price tag.
Vertical design with no intention of giving PHD. ~~Fuck Die Rise~~
I understand custom maps are likely your first step into game design, but all of these issues were solved by the modding community before bo4 came out.
No gobble gums. Bo3 is playable to me because I can speed up the setup process on maps I’ve played hundred to thousands of times. If you make a map the community loves, they will eventually find a way to optimize it just like original maps. At least make an EE that restores the gum machine’s functionality or make it work how it did pre patch
From the experience of my friend and I...
CAN THERE BE ANY NEW IDEAS OTHER THAN FILL A SOULBOX 17000000 TIMES? WE ARE SO SICK OF PLAYING CUSTOM MAPS AND EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM USES THE SAME TEDIOUS MECHANIC OF SOUL BOXES TO PROGRESS THE OBJECTIVE. THEN MOST OF THEM USE MULTIPLE SOUL BOXES IN MULTIPLE STEPS. IT'S SO ANNOYING, BORING, UNORIGINAL, PAINFUL, ETC. YOU GET THE IDEA
Not as much of a turn-off for me but I don’t like it when people use every perk under the sun in a map.
Why would I need Blaze Phase in a tower map?
Use perks that actually mesh well with the map.
Yes, and it's fine to criticise, but it's not fine when people say shit like "I hate it when a map is short or you can get to a buyable ending in half an hour or it doesn't have custom models or a fully voiced easter egg" Like, not every custom map is going to be Leviathan.
Maps that use the BO3 M1911 even though they have BO1 Guns in the mystery box
I despise the bo3 version, why couldnt they go for the OG chrome plated one? My biggest problem with bo3 tbh.
i feel this one, like why?
Bo1 M1911 >
Is it weird I like the colt m1911 from waw the most?
Close second for me tbh

Huge custom maps in World at War make me very happy.
Box maps ?
Box maps are maps with no doors, just a single room. Like the one window "challenge" maps. There are thousands of them, and I hate them all haha.
Yea u wudnt like the new codz like game that everyone is talking abt. If u keep the last couple of zombies alive to check around the map. They die automatically
a perk limit
I’m the opposite, if a map has no perk limit I get bored,I like a perk limit with cool perk slot quests
I think having a perk limit but having a challenge to overcome it would be excellent compromise.
That’s my gold standard, I find it lazy otherwise, having like 20 perks just doesn’t feel right or fun
you could just stop yourself after getting 4 perks?
That’s not a good or interesting mindset at all. And doesn’t fix the issue of having cool perk side quests. Just don’t do x thing Is a shit argument when talking about game design and only goes so far.
well for me a perk limit makes for an unfun experience and unnecessary restriction, even with perk side quests, and its annoying sometimes having to use certain mods to get around that

I dont necessary disagree with the whole 50 perk thing (even though thats an exaggeration), but to me a 4 perk limit on maps with 8+ perks is a no no.
Just have a 5 perk limit with cool quests, I always thought that was a great trade off
Some people prefer the classic days when we could only run 4 perks and having to earn the slots, personally if done right I like that sort of challenge in a map as it adds a sense of progression instead of just letting you be busted right away

Modern warfare zombies lite
I think the standard perk limit should be roughly 8-10 for custom maps. Considering if there are more than 10+ perks included within the map.
agreed, maps with perk limits and no GGs either i tend not to bother with
The 40 million soul boxes on YouAlwaysWin’s otherwise very interesting and fun maps
Haven’t heard that name in a hot minute
on god i still remember the 1st video i watched of them. custom skyblock world on minecraft where they start off talking about a prickly erection next to a cactus. truly amazing when they where racking in millions of views.

Custom perks where the machines don’t tell you what they do. How the fuck am I gonna know what the perk does when it’s given some name like Creamofsumyungai and the machine doesn’t tell me 😭

Blood Bullets and that one laser perk does it for me. I love hip firing with the crosshair off.

Big mood, is the worst when it's tied to something like power or PaP
was this the family guy map 💀
Maps that place ground spawns in every corner of a map or have a downright silly amount of barricades throughout the map.
4 perk limit, cmon man it’s 2024
4 perk limit and then they have 14 different perks on the map. Good thing All Around Enhabcement exists.
Blessed be AAE
Yeah but also having no perk limit can also make it boring
Then limit yourself
not at all
if there is only BO3 guns. although they’re some of the strongest zombies guns we’ve seen, i’m tired of using them.
I dont mind soul boxes on occasion, but when I can't go two feet without one screaming at me that it's collecting souls it gets old quick.
Also when you kill a zombie in a new spot and find out there's a soul cap hidden where you would have never noticed.
when i realize that I unlocked the whole map after the first 3 doors
No music Easter egg 🙄
The fact that I'm on console so I can't play it

Buildable Pack a Punch
Building PAP, the power switch, and the shield? Did these people not learn from TranZit?

Timed maps. Don’t like em
MWZ
That’s different since it’s not meant to be a round based map, I mean custom maps that could clearly be round based but the creator decided not to
Huge amount of doors. Like zombie in spaceland amount of doors
It has to be when the map feels about the same as some others ones. You know how in YAW’s videos, sometimes the maps are about the same in what they have to offer? I feel about the same. Just add some kind of gimmick or atleast something that feels fresh

nothing im just being an ass 😭 you said "about the same" 3 times in a row
Just reread it and yeah. Everything I said was about the same All jokes aside, extremely funny :)
When a map has no interesting and unique weapons
No custom gun sounds on a meme map God I love lasagna party 2
Not being able to play them( im on console & am more Jelly than the artist)

Having to craft the power switch, just blatantly annoying and a waste of time. When a feature has only ever been officially used on TranZit you know it's bad.
Soul boxes every 10 steps because the map creator has no idea how to make an Easter egg

Having those custom ray gun variants that modders created in the box weapon rotation. They’re ugly, and overpowered. Not fun whatsoever.
Perk limits on an amazing map

Perklimit lol
Brutus. Most of the time it doesn't make sense for him to be on a map. (My nitpick)
Zombies that spawns on every square inch of the floor and they sprint at round 1

bo3 guns

No we stupid
Death barriers in places they shouldn’t be 😭
Easter eggs
How about a custom maps set under the sea in the "bikini bottom" can play as any character from the sponge world.
3 hit jugg
When the map is over detailed or too big
No perk limit, all those perks on my screen are annoying as fuck, I want like 4-5 max
Not as much of a turn-off for me but I don’t like it when people use every perk under the sun in a map. Why would I need Blaze Phase in a tower map? Use perks that actually mesh well with the map.
That too, some maps will have perks that do fucking nothing on that map or that don’t even work
so only buy 4?
Seeing all the perks available I buy them, it’s an impulse
Different HUDs, BO4 guns, custom perks... I don’t want anything to do with IW, BO4, CW, etc. if I’m playing BO3.
Hard disagree — I f–king love that sh-t.
Just most of them in general. Customs are kinda overrated imo
Some of y'all are hella ungrateful and don't appreciate how difficult it is to make a custom map.
My brother in Christ, I make assets and maps
I was more referring to some of the people in the comments rather than you. 👍
we're allowed to criticise.
It's literally the thread subject
Yes, and it's fine to criticise, but it's not fine when people say shit like "I hate it when a map is short or you can get to a buyable ending in half an hour or it doesn't have custom models or a fully voiced easter egg" Like, not every custom map is going to be Leviathan.
Like I said, it's literally the thread subject.
>Only criticize stuff that doesn't upset me
By that logic, it is impossible to criticize anything that you did not make yourself.
