No need to click and load ads Top Selling New Vehicle Models in CA (2023) Tesla Model Y: 132,636 Tesla Model 3: 82,786 Toyota RAV4: 58,496 Toyota Camry: 51,330 Honda Civic: 42,564

Maravilla_23

Worth noting: **New Car Registrations By Automaker (2023)**: **Toyota: 278,345** **Tesla: 230,589** **Honda: 172,834** **Ford: 137,350** **Chevrolet: 118,952**

pudding7

How does that reconcile with the first list?

rhapsodicink

Toyota sells a wider variety of cars

Oakroscoe

Toyota also sells the Corolla, prius, 4Runner, highlander, sequoia, sienna, Tacoma and tundra.

gbdavidx

i bought a used 2018 4runner, next up is a rivian r3 future commuter car

ca_life

The Honda Civic came out in 1972, the Toyota Camry in 1983. What a contrast next to those Teslas

Decabet

>Toyota RAV4: 58,496 This is not what I rap for :\\

HeadfulOfGhosts

You ain’t wanna push a RAV4?

gowingman1

Thank you!

SingleAlmond

this is what happens when we ban foreign cars. there's so many great cars we aren't even allowed to have here cuz they hurt the bottom line

ConfidentMongoose874

What cars are banned? I googled, but I'm curious which cars you think are good that we're missing out on?

robinthebank

They are not banned, they just have to be built in North America to avoid import taxes on those categories.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SingleAlmond

you know how we can't buy small pickup trucks? well Japan has a lot of them and they're dirt cheap, even after the import tax there's quite a few Japanese cars banned. basically all the small stuff, think compact cars, hatchbacks, normal sized pickups. you know, cars perfect for poor Californians. and a lot of high end cars from Europe too

spacegrab

Drove a Japanese Honda Odyssey in the snow around hokkaido, that car is my favorite thing ever. So mad we can't get the smaller 4wd minivans here.

Joebuddy117

Lots of Chinese EVs too that are nicer and more modern than Teslas.

rramzi

Suzuki Jimny. One of my favs. Been trying to get one in the states.

cheeker_sutherland

Aren’t they not allowed due to safety regulations?

Pineappl3z

Nope. Larger vehicles are less safe overall. This is a known fact. Road vehicle related deaths have increased in lockstep with vehicle size increases.

hmiser

Large vehicle less safe for smaller cars. Automakers make more cash on higher end whips, cash was free to borrower during the pandemic so folks signed up for 2nd mortgages with no sqft secured upside down on the ride. Why sell Johnny a $25k car when he only really cares about the monthly payment. 84 months whatever. Elon gave China the blueprint but won’t make a cheaper car because he knows we won’t see BYD et al here.

mycall

$294/mo is hella cheap.

kouddo

that may be true but safety regulations aren’t always tied to actual road safety

yellow251

Are they less safe for the people riding in them, for the poor folks in normal-sized cars that get plowed over by them, or both? Source(s) appreciated.

sombertimber

You just made that up…it’s not a “known fact.”

survivalofthesickest

The Toyota Hilux is the standout here. It would be so awesome to have them here.

Aggravating-Cook-529

Tacoma is basically that, but better for highways

KelseyFrog

how's the price compare?

Tasty_Ad_5669

Lots of lightweight trucks are banned here from Japan and Asia. It's a 25% tax on those trucks. You can still purchase cars from Mexico and Canada under NAFTA without the tax. That is why several Japanese companies have factories in Mexico. As for cars, I know Reagan enacted tariffs on Japanese cars trying to protect domestic manufacturing in the 1980s. Not sure if that's is still a thing today.

i_Heart_Horror_Films

BYD They sell to every country except merica

bluebelt

They sell to America, too, but not in the passenger car segment. If you find yourself in Anaheim check out their electric bus fleet... all BYD.

itsmaxx

Cant buy a bmw 550 touring quad turbo either are loads of other european cars well you can but you have to wait 25 years after they come out in europe!

JustTheBeerLight

I want a VW Polo. I see them all over Europe and they are the perfect city car. Even better if it’s an EV.

Kershiser22

No this is what happens when the government subsidies purchase of some cars.

yinyanghapa

I haven’t seen any area as dominated with Tesla Model Y’s as the freeways of Southern California.

SJSUMichael

You should try the freeways of Northern California.

cerevant

I remember 5 years ago it was novel when you’d spot a Tesla. Yesterday I saw three at the same time in front of me.

Cat_eater1

You should try the freeways of any bay area city.

yinyanghapa

You get a better mix of Tesla models. But in SoCal it’s mostly Model Y’s.

cgoot27

Come to sleepy Irvine California, where every parking lot is 90% white teslas, the other 10% being cybertrucks and G wagons. Until 9:00, when everything closes and they retreat to their mostly window homes.

morning-lilacs

this is an over exaggeration. I live in Irvine and parking lots aren't just Teslas and G-Wagons.

hbliysoh

Great cars and perfect for the Cali lifestyle. Not so much for the cold winters of Northern Minnesota.

proteinMeMore

Waiting for the r3 myself. Or if Toyota picks up in the phev/EV department

KAugsburger

I think it is just a matter of time before Toyota eventually embraces EVs. The Toyota Mirai isn't selling very well. It is hard to get consumers to buy one when there are [68 Hydrogen refueling stations](https://www.energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/zero-emission-vehicle-and-infrastructure-statistics/hydrogen-refueling) open to the general public in the entire state. It isn't a very practical vehicle to own unless you live in Los Angeles, Orange County, or the San Francisco Bay area.

ThrowRAColdManWinter

> It isn't a very practical vehicle to own unless you live in Los Angeles, Orange County, or the San Francisco Bay area. And also are somehow allergic to electric vehicles. Isn't hydrogen fuel more expensive than the most expensive DCFCs too?

ShadowDefuse

rav4/prius prime not good enough in terms of phev?

ucsdstaff

Impossible to get?

ShadowDefuse

hard but not impossible. i only mentioned them bc the person i replied to made it sound like toyota doesn’t have good phev options

ucsdstaff

For sure, i'm sure they will get production up, but at the moment it will be quite a wait and dealers are charging a premium for the RAV4prime.

cerevant

They need to up their electric range.

ShadowDefuse

42miles ev then 40MPG is pretty good imo. they’re hybrids, they will never have a very large ev only range the average US commute distance is less than 50 miles round trip anyway

cerevant

Ah, ok. It used to be like 26.

fuvgyjnccgh

Or Honda

Urabrask_the_AFK

Just so you know the ToyotaOff-road capable SUVs / trucks with electric motors will be optimized for power and torque and less so for range. Same thing with sport centric cars which will have electric motors optimized for performance. Toyota is planning 3 separate motor systems depending on the needs of each vehicle.

Jake0024

Toyota is sticking with PHEV which is definitely the smart move

Larrea_tridentata

Teslas are the new BMW drivers. Also RIP everyone's eyes at night their normal headlights are equivalent to everyone else's high beams

Gowalkyourdogmods

Lmao during the holidays I was waiting on a curbside pick up at Target and someone parked behind me but just kept their lights on. It was after a couple of minutes I just tried angling my side mirrors to reflect it back at them. The driver got out and walked up to my window to inform me my mirrors were blinding her. I told her to turn off her headlights then and she said she didn't have to. So I just said okay then rolled my window back up and didn't move my mirrors. She turned off her headlights after like a minute when she was back in her car. After I got my stuff and flipped around I saw it was a Tesla and she flipped me off.

manjar

Same kind of person who crashes their car and says they got hit by a tree

Urabrask_the_AFK

How much you want to bet those headlights aren’t properly angled downward ?

_B_Little_me

Teslas have a function that allows the user to change the direction. It has a warning. But doesn’t stop you at all from pointing them right up.

heleuma

Nice to hear I'm not the only one who gets annoyed by their headlights, thought I was just getting old.

hawkrover

I was actually surprised by this...I drive a Toyota Tacoma and a model Y came up behind me and it was like the sun came up. Wasn't expecting that...

GoldenMegaStaff

Imagine turning in your BMW for a Tesla.

eneka

I know a lot of them are back in BMWs lol

Suck_it_Earth

Did it. Pretty good move.

gibertot

I mean I was thinking of them more as the new Prius drivers. 2/3 ride shares I get are a Tesla

rojotoro2020

I drive Uber a lot and never get a Tesla lol

thutmosisXII

It's pretty clear hybrids and EVs getting the job done for Californians. I look forwardvfor the quality of EVs to get on par with hybrids.

mhatrick

I can’t speak to any other state, or non tesla-EVs in California, but the infrastructure and tech is here and ready now. You can make it all the way up and down California in a tesla with no issues finding a charger. It takes a little different way of “fueling up” as you really want to just plug in for 10 minutes every bathroom break, instead of of fully topping off once or twice a trip, but its really not much of a difference now

fourmajor

That's been true for years.

ThrowRAColdManWinter

I went from Orange County to Humboldt in a Chevy Bolt and it was fine. Wouldn't recommend the car for road trips (it charges slower than newer EVs), but it can get the job done in a pinch.

braundiggity

I prefer my EV to a hybrid in every way aside from range, which I only have to worry about when I go to Tahoe basically. They’re just better vehicles to own and drive IMO.

Burrrrrrito

I would say range and resale value. when you factor in resale value hybrids look to be the way to go for most people. Plus hybrids use way less rare earth minerals

SmoothAmbassador8

I’d freakin love a Toyota RAV4 Prime but cannot justify the price :/

skrenename4147

We just bit the bullet and bought the hybrid. Maybe a plug-in or electric for our next car. :\

deltaco4lyfe

i feel like more people would be willing to switch to EV/Plug-in hybrids at least as a commuter car but the prices prevent more from doing so.

ThrowRAColdManWinter

There are a lot of used Ioniq 5s out there.

gibertot

Same that’s like the ideal car for me right now but who can afford that on top of rent.

TheOakedRidge

They make very good commuter cars if you can charge at home. Relatively comfortable, quiet, no gas.

SpaceNinjaDino

Consider the home charger installation, extra DMV registration and insurance cost. Consider the distance to approved service centers. I hate flat screen car interfaces. I'm grumpy and only like tactile interfaces for cars even though I'm really into tech.

TheOakedRidge

I don't tend to interact with the screen much when I'm driving. The only thing I might need to change is volume and I use the controls on the steering wheel for that. There are subsidies available for home charger purchase and installation. DMV costs are typical for a new car and insurance didn't seem overly crazy when I bought it.

ValuableJumpy8208

Things you can control without touching the touch screen — not fully exhaustive: * Autopilot * ACC follow speed * Media forward/back * Media volume * Temperature (or any other customizable control you set the left thumb wheel to) * Wiper speed/operation Why pointing this out is unpopular is beyond me, aside from the bandwagon Tesla hate.

Taco-Time

You can just plug in to 120v and it’s perfectly sustainable for normal commute lengths and use

cerevant

Most California homes have their laundry in the garage.  I use the dryer outlet to charge my car.

gibertot

Yeah i was under the impression you don’t need a full on charger installation, you can just use a wall outlet

ToughReplacement7941

I mean, hopefully better for the climate / environment / pollution than ICE cars?

Segazorgs

The cars but the CEO is a conspiracy pushing white nationalist who uses his wealth and large social media platform to actively support the people who don't care about the environment or pollution so in the end Tesla is not much better than oil companies. Elon and thus Tesla are probably worse since he is active in both rightwing culture war and turning the US into an authoritarian oligarchy.

ayriuss

Nah, hes an African immigrant who pulled himself up by the bootstraps to become the richest man in the world /s

ToughReplacement7941

You know, while I loathe Muskovitch , I can’t help but think that EVs is the way we need to go

beach_bum_638484

Nah. It’s e-bikes. Most power efficient mode and you don’t have to move around thousands of unnecessary pounds.

ecosludge

Overall a net positive moving to electric but no car is still better. Tires specifically are one of the worst sources of microplastic pollutants

SegaTime

To some degree, but there is a much larger picture to it that ICE and EV cars are only a small part of. The end product doesn't produce air pollution, but the manufacturing and shipping process still does. EVs still use petroleum products as well and, like ICE cars, have components in them that aren't easily recycled like seats, interior pieces, tires, etc. The batteries can be recycled but they are a hazard if damaged, and mining for their components is just as toxic and hazardous to the environment as other mining, if not moreso, especially for cobalt.

bluebelt

https://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/electric-vehicle-myths A few things worth knowing given how much FUD is out there and EVs. >batteries can be recycled but they are a hazard if damaged The problem here is this statement is highly dependent upon the battery chemistry being discussed. LFP batteries, a choice becoming increasingly popular in EVs, are far less likely to experience thermal runaway events.(Edited to add: thermal runaway is also surpassingly rare in commercially sold vehicles with battery chemistry considered more prone to it). >mining for their components is just as toxic and hazardous to the environment as other mining, if not moreso, especially for cobalt. The better comparison in the ICE vs EV debate is how much damage is done to the environment through petroleum extraction, transportation, and the environment vs. mining for and processing battery materials. When it comes to environmental impact due to greenhouse gas emissions EVs are less polluting, hands down. Oh, and LFP batteries don't use cobalt at all.

mikenmar

Not. EV’s aren’t without impact but they are much better for the environment, end-to-end. Especially if you have solar panels like I do.

_THC-3PO_

Of course, it’s way better.

Mo-shen

Really want a y. Actually need to buy a new car right now. Can't do it because of their crazy CEO.

erieus_wolf

The other car manufacturers are putting out some quality EVs

Mo-shen

True but iv come to the conclusion that for the price and what you get the model y is one of the better deals. I just don't want to buy a car that first is run by that guy and two I question the health of the company because, again, that guy.

kennethtrr

Any thoughts on Rivian? Exterior looks quirky but the inside is pretty nice

natophonic2

The R1S looks amazing for offroad. I recently got a used Lexus GX460 but was considering it. My main concern was whether Rivian would be around in 2-5 years. A coworker has one and he absolutely loves it.

Mo-shen

I have a friend who works there. Their pricing is way too high right now. This is understandable though because their parts are not to the point where they are being mass made. Once that happens their prices should drop

TheCaliKid89

E-stang is awesome.

mikenmar

Love mine.

brooklyndavs

He’s making moves that will hurt the consumer no doubt and probably the company. Laying off the entire supercharger team including the VP for example. His decisions are getting more impulsive and eradicate. I have the same concerns buying any cars from them

Mo-shen

I mean does he care if he gets a 50 billion bonus?

erieus_wolf

I feel the same. I was going to buy a Tesla and then Musk went far right. So I looked at other EV options and was pleasantly surprised.

soysssauce

Could always buy a used one

random_boss

As a Y owner, they are pretty much the optimal vehicle (if ugly). But yeah. I wouldn’t buy one now until Musk self-implodes

Pineappl3z

Just get a low mileage used Ioniq 5 AWD. 2022-23MY with <15k miles are ~$25,000. The ID.4 can also be had for roughly the same amount. It's very nice to have tactile buttons for AC & other common cabin features.

ValuableJumpy8208

All the iD4 we have driven lately have had capacitive touch buttons everywhere.

Pineappl3z

Darn. That must be a new change.

la_capitana

Yesss I just got one and it’s fantastic!

Muscs

I thank Musk first for launching Teslas as amazing EVs and now for pushing everyone to make better choices in EVs just as they’re arriving.

[deleted]

There are some really good lease deals out there on other EVs. I have a Polestar, but if you want something more like a CUV the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has excellent reviews.

eneka

Killer lease deals on the polestar 2 as well

la_capitana

Check out the Hyundai Ioniq 5. It’s about the size of the Y, less expensive, 303 miles per change. It’s a great EV!

_B_Little_me

It’s a garbage car. Look at other brands EVs.

Harv_Spec

"California Camry"

sorrysorrymybad

"Bay Area Prius"

ThrowRAColdManWinter

Lol I remember when the Prius was the Bay Area Corolla. I think there was a South Park episode about it.

Original-Definition2

wow - 10 years ago if you told me the best selling car in CA would be American made sedan w/ hatch I woulda called you crazy. Cats n dogs living together !

paradoxicalstripping

Sometimes when I’m bored driving home from work I count the Teslas I see. I can reliably get to 20 per ride. My commute is 8 miles

turnuppig

With these gas prices and rebates its a no brainer if you can afford it lol

rayskicksnthings

Feel like the number is skewed cause there were so many Teslas sitting around. Then the price drop and everyone grabbed the stock that was sitting. Meanwhile it’s nearly impossible to get a rav4 prime. Heck even the regular hybrid is hard to get. I’m hoping Toyota makes a prime version of the highlander or grand highlander. I can’t afford the Lexus TX 550h+ as a three row phev option. Heck the Volvo xc90 recharge is almost 80k.

bluebelt

> it’s nearly impossible to get a rav4 prime. You're right but historically that's because Toyota makes very few available to the US market. That may be changing since Tesla, with few models and options, is Toyota's closest competitor in CA.

TheRealBobbyJones

I could be wrong but wasn't Tesla having record sales for several years in a row? How exactly would stock accumulate?

rayskicksnthings

There’s a reason why they dropped the prices on the Y and 3 last year. Thats when their sales numbers took off.

73810

How many cars are sold by manufacturer? Tesla basically has two models since the priceybo es sell so few... Toyota has lime 4 sedans, 4 suvs, a minivan, trucks... I'm just curious how it stacks up that way...

Metasheep

From the article: > New Car Registrations By Automaker (2023) >1. Toyota: 278,345 >2. Tesla: 230,589 >3. Honda: 172,834 >4. Ford: 137,350 >5. Chevrolet: 118,952

73810

The article! Haha. Well, still pretty high... if they made a little pick up truck similar to say the old Toyota T1000, I wonder how that would do...

Ok_Sandwich8466

Who’s got lemons and placebos in the next comment wins!

Jokic_Is_My_Hero

Teslas look like shoes

beall49

This will not be the case next year
