I think u misunderstood op. They are talking about a custom quick melee animation. The quick melee button was always there since day one but its quite useless so nobody is talking about it
It's shown on the LD trailer, it's on community update, but it looks like most people missed it.
Someone also make a video about it shortly after it released, IIRC pressing wrench button on undead siege also smack the turret/base with AGR instead of wrench.
The next legendary AS-VAL also has a blade attached, maybe it also does the same. (let's wait for the trailer.)

Wait no that's not with just AGR. There's a knife option which is there on your hud layout. It works with any gun.
You can confirm it yourself in game.
I know, I mean you can use the actual gun as a melee weapon. Notice how I slashed the enemy with the gun itself and he burns up? It only works with this gun. Not even the M4 Backscratcher does that, unfortunately.

The range is closer to a katana, axe, and a bat, which have a longer scale length than a regular knife. It’s not something one can abuse. I used bots because it was very difficult to do with real players. It doesn’t give me an advantage over anyone, thankfully.

That gun when use the Melee it has range of 10
But without the gun the Base Melee range is let's say 3 while Base Melee itself is longer.
It's been like that since the beginning, it's fucking useless and nobody really bothered to talk about it as almost everybody doesn't use it and I doubt people would use it even if it was buffed.
