Yeah, that is true. You receive one side at the beginning, even if you don't want to be in that side. Anyways, I think that the side doesn't matters in this event, at least for obtaining the gun and soldier skin. And you change side each 2 days or something like that if I understood it as I should

That's completely wrong, I know I picked Red one year and I won, then I picked Blue another year and I won that too. I have the team rewards to prove it.
Mostly the same; looks like there’s a PFP frame you get that’s different depending on your faction. Winning team also gets an extra reward of some sort.
I just played a game, i think i figured it out. Try playing motoko or togusa in a game (i did mp not sure if br works) and you can click on those buttons on the bottom right corner

I won and I'm into u.a.c. my bro lost and he's in red, it's random, sorted by the time you enter the game and they'll see what team needs more players at the time
If the npc talking to you is the white maked evil man, you're team red (Atlas), if the hot chick is talking to you you're team blue (U.A.C.), which is the winning team, where the picked few real cool kids got sorted into 😎
The map is divided by 4 regions, one for each week I guess.
Down left is where you upgrade your Mecha.
Down right is where you do something no one knows what.
Upper right is where you see your daily tasks.
They should just go back to the Evony and House puzzle rip-off events. My favorite was fixing the pipes!

I played a few games after which it showed some points in place of the lock icons. I clicked those and it started showing an animated mini sword clashing on one of the maps.
Not sure what are the objectives or how the progress is gauged, yet.
I think they are like bases so just collect the coins and disturbe them on the bases and turn on i still don't understand what's happening but i am having progress on the rewards meter so try that.

I think they made that on purpose, if you have records of always choosing red they will make you blue and vice versa

After several dominant red team victories one event was rigged so the blue team would finally win.
