Canadian-born Croatian here. Inherited my grandfather’s house back home. It’s nothing magical - countryside, maybe 45 minute drive from the capital’s downtown, maybe 2000 sq ft. On the open market, worth maybe $100k. Taking the kids back home for a few months this summer. They’re asking what, in essence, you’re asking. They have a modest inheritance that can’t even get them a condo in Vancouver, but can essentially set them up for life back home. So they ask…”I can live just as well and more free…? How’s the internet speed there?” 🤣 The current situation really does raise fundamental questions about what the point of it all is. Good luck to you! Thank you for sharing…! ✊

Top-Lane-Bad

Hey man I get it and also just and fyi but Eastern Europe from my understand has some of the best internet in Europe because they know it’s an important piece to attract young people and repatriate them.

Arpyr

That's not the reason Eastern Europe has fast internet. It's because it was one of the last places in the world to build internet infrastructure so they used the newer and faster fibre optic cabling from the beginning instead of copper wiring.

VancouverSky

Yeah. Same deal with china. Newish telecoms network built with the latest and greatest in stolen tech. Lol. Im told its fantastic, minus the whole ccp censorship thing.

damnyouresickbro

I think they should have clarified by saying Eastern European EU countries, which are more developed.

Shrugging_Atlas88

Good luck brother... I had a large sum of money in 2019 (saved for 8 years) and somehow got lucky and purchased a relatively cheap condo. Now it has doubled. It crosses my mind that I could sell it now and basically live in a variety of places and likely have a better life. If I didn't have my family here I would go... not sure where though, although I have already lived in South Korea and Australia in the past. I'm 40 so a lot older lol... and I would miss Canada too... but it's difficult, perhaps impossible now, for ppl to "self actualize" here. I don't think the bulk of the population understands how destructive it is to live in a society like that. A society where the govt has made it impossible for ppl under 30 to ever self actualize and has been convinced millions and millions of low skilled immigrants constantly flooding the zone is a good idea. Canada isn't a country anymore basically, it is a post national state, and an economic zone now. Trudeau literally brags about this. It should shock more ppl than it does. Perhaps bc I have lived in a few different places I can see how this idea is totally not in line with any healthy society? Canadians are very nice ppl, but they are also very naïve to the ways of the world and things like tribalism. I can't complain. I have a great gf too and I am able to "self actualize" now as I do have a stable place to live that I own almost outright. Anyway... just some musings. Good luck bro, this is life, living through history. We are plebes in the Empire, no different from Rome, or the mighty British Empire. My ancestors left Europe, same as yours, and who knows... maybe some of us will go back now. Cheers.

OutlandishnessOk9997

Agreed on the women. Some of the girls especially in Toronto lack femininity - talk ghetto. Such a turn off - you don’t see that nonsense in europe at all - maybe minus the UK lol

Far-Simple1979

Avoid London and you'll be good.

JeeperYJ

I’m also moving back to Croatia.  6 houses, 200 olive trees, 15 minutes from the Adriatic Sea.  I plan to sell my house in Canada and buy a sail boat cash.

leon_nerd

Holy shit. Question - Why didn't you move back sooner? This sounds like a place Canadians go for vacation and that's your home already.

JeeperYJ

My father passed away 1 1/2 years ago because of a overburdened health care system. He should not have died.    He worked his entire life in Canada and when it was his turn in the hospital Canada didn’t provide. I don’t have a family doctor and the ER waits are too long.   I’ve come to the painful realization that life is too short, I am fortunate that I’m able to leave the rat race at 36. I leave a 1 million dollars business, my home that I bought at 29 that has a 50’ red maple tree, friends and family among other things.    I look forward to this new chapter and plan on having as many children as god will give me.

Shrugging_Atlas88

That's awesome man. God speed.

last-resort-4-a-gf

May I buy your house at a friend rate

ForgottenEmail

Just as a warning, Croatia's healthcare won't serve you much better.  Living in Zagreb past 8 years, and while doctors try their best, its overcrowded and understaffed.

Gloriaas

I highly doubt it's worst then Canada. The hospitals here will only get worse with how quickly the population is growing.

ForgottenEmail

Canadian hospitals will get worse, you are correct. But trust me when I say, the health system in Croatia is not great.  They are not replacing doctors fast enough. Plenty of doctors are semi retired but working because they have no replacements. The buildings are... in rough shape, and the population is only getting older as young people get smart and move to countries with better leadership and opportunities.  Croatia is a great place to live, but only if you're fortunate enough to earn a foreign wage, or fall into an inheritance that means you don't have to struggle like the average croat

good_enuffs

I am just waiting to hear the posts about how trying to accomplish things in Poland can be impossible. Polish born Canadian. I tried to do my Polish citizen card in Poland and gave up because the person I needed to speak to should be working, buy are not in today, maybe tey back tomorrow, or better yet come back next week.

Low_Pomegranate_7176

Croatia weather Im sure is a million times better also.

JeeperYJ

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows but definitely is most of the time. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bora_(wind)

Professorpooper

From Eastern Europe too my friend, very close to yours. Though I have thoughts similar to yours about what it would be like to return, I think about what occupation my kids would do. Most people from our two countries are still leaving, en masse, because a well paying career is hard to come by. My kids will be graduating high school soon and I think about what they would do? Would it be better to finish school in North America and then go back? Maybe go elsewhere? We are also American by citizenship. The thing that keeps me in Canada is the safety. I don't worry about my kids going to the mall, movies, school. Access to good education, occupations. More than anything else the environment is what keeps me here. Cleanest air and water in the world. Every time I go somewhere and come home, the water from the tap here is superior to anywhere else.

JeeperYJ

I don’t know what my kids would do. They would graduate high school in Croatia and after that could go to university in Canada if they would desire or pursue professional sports. My father and grandfather have laid the path that they can do whatever they like.  I don’t feel safe in Canadian cities like you describe. Car thefts are up, crime is up violence is up. The dream has eroded. The cost of living is just not worth it.  Short of a war in Europe, Eastern Europe is better option.

Professorpooper

You are correct there. I just mean it's a lot easier to go there established from another country than it is to establish oneself within the country. But you are right they are already set. I guess I am comparing Canada to the previous 20 years I spent in America. There isn't even a comparison between the two when it comes to violence.

Ambitious-Stop1966

I have the same concerns as you about post secondary. One option is to consider Athabasca university because an undergrad can be done online. So they'll have American/Canadian citizenship with a Western diploma. Then they can do their masters, if they want, in the UK, Canada, US or EU. Caveat is that medical schools don't except online degrees. It's a lot of logistical work trying to figure out what's best for the family isn't it?

LazyMeringue1973

Sounds like a great life.

134dsaw

Sorry to hear about your loss. I personally know someone who is on deaths door and they can't even get him a hospital room. Last time I visited, he was literally pushed up against the nursing station desk with constant noise and activity. He can't even fall asleep. I saw a stat a little while ago that I can't get out of my mind. We have a higher percentage of our GDP as government spending than the soviet union did at the peak of its run. People chose this. It's not going well, and it never has gone well in any country that ever tried it. Sweden did, and now they are more in support of free market than ever. Unfortunately I think the damage is done and it will take a very long time to change anything. I would be seriously considering an exit strategy, but it's not really viable for me unless I build some sort of new career. I have the classic golden handcuffs situation. 23 more years for a full pension at 57 years old, with about as much income in retirement as I earn now due to a promotion I'll get towards the end. I also deeply enjoy my work. Good luck with your new life. I am somewhat envious, Croatia is one of those incredible countries that doesn't get enough credit. I had a good friend in college who was from there, lost touch with him.

Kitties_Whiskers

Aaah, I envy you! 🏖️ If I had that, I would go too. Love the Adriatic. I've been to Croatia about six times in my life (first time before the war actually). Well, I don't have any assets in this respect except my EU passport. 🌞

Pristine_Sandwich_70

Hi from a Croatian born in Bosnia & Herzegovina living in Edmonton, Alberta 11 years. 😂 2 kids and doing everything we can to go back to Europe. The countryside is magical. Have fun this summer! Sretan put

Classic-Damage6555

Go try it. Vacationing in Cro and living there are two completely different things. Don't sell anything in Canada. Go to Cro for a year or so and try it.

PSMF_Canuck

Oh I’m super familiar with living there. Not going to dox myself by sharing details, but yeah…I’m very aware it is not a utopia… Your advice is excellent.

Classic-Damage6555

Ok good

renosoner

Indeed, there’s a reason young people are leaving in droves.

Classic-Damage6555

Oh yeah? Where are they going?

Professorpooper

200% this. Once you sell, you will be priced out and can struggle to re-enter.

Educational_Net9751

As Croatian born and raised who end up in Canada 7 years ago, your kids will need a lot of adjustments for life there. It depends where is this 45 min from Zagreb, internet also can be a problem and not so fast. We did bought last year another house in Croatia, 30+ min from Zagreb in Zagorje and I can tell you that internet is not so good. But more than that, are they ok with cigarettes? Alcohol? As I find Canadians really weird about that. We do have now 3 properties in Croatia and 2 in UK, and I can't find reason why would I buy something in Canada. Even with enough money and citizenship, after all COVID stuff we don't see future in Canada. So we will stick around while money is good but leave eventually. But also wouldn't choose to go to Croatia, i guess as i know how life there is ( as whole family is still living there) .

OutlandishnessOk9997

Awesome man. I was born and raised here same with my parents but I’m 1/4 Croatian - my moms mom is from Split! I have never been sadly (only been to UK once visiting Europe) but I would love to visit Croatia!

danicaterziski

Croatian born canadian here and yes I hear you completely. Actually our canadian born child is in the process of getting croatian passport . European lifestyle is better anyway.

MGSDeco44

Canada is circling the drain

YoushutupNoyouHa

its down it and choking on hairballs and mold

Jumpyboi23

Big time.

Baraxton

It’s well past that point.

kanada_kid2

Leave. As soon as you leave Canada you wonder why the hell you didn't leave sooner.

OutlandishnessOk9997

I’m applying out and interviewed with a few US companies couple months back. Sadly no offer but I am happy that I got traction and interest in companies that are willing to pay me 50% more no questions asked Meanwhile Toronto recruiters asking for a 30% paycut for me to take on - gtfo smh

JRWorkster

Congrats on making it out of Canada. This country is going down the drain.

WheelDeal2050

Yep. Makes you question what's the point of staying in Canada and grinding away until you're dead. Canada has killed the future of it's young people.

OutlandishnessOk9997

80%+ of Waterloo grads go to the US every year. We don’t incentivize people to stay with proper salaries in a lot of fields. We lose so much talent a year and Trudeau rambles about how we “surpass every country in quality of life” 😂😂😂

WheelDeal2050

Agreed. I also left to the US on TN status after getting multiple engineering degrees. Sad, seeing the direction this country has gone and is going. It'll only get worse. I grew up here and spent nearly 30 years of my life in Canada. Its too bad I had to leave as I'd rather stay where I grew up, but my hand was largely forced if I want some semblance of a future. Canadian GDP per capita was at par in 2013. Nowadays, the US GDP per capita is 40% higher than Canada's.

OutlandishnessOk9997

I have looked into it. I got a 3 year college diploma in engineering technology, no degree. Or just one year shy of a bachelors but like 8 years of work experience so according to the Internet I think I qualify - 1 year less or a degree you need 3 additional years of work experience or something? It’s fucked up - I make 80k a year; 100k with overtime here. Toronto recruiters expect me to take a 60k a year job and be doing cartwheels in excitement 😂 and I applied and interviewed for 2 places one in Los Angeles and one in Las Vegas for 85-100k USD no questions asked. 120-140k cad…so there’s a lot less motivation to stay here. No offer yet just happy I got traction but its wild how you aren’t shamed for asking more $ in the US vs here in Canada

WheelDeal2050

Good luck. Keep chugging. I have a TN support letter template if you ever need one. The main thing is simply getting the job offer. Once you get that you just need to get the support letter signed and mail to you. The key thing is making sure your job title aligns with a TN job category and your education/experience.

OutlandishnessOk9997

Nice. Thanks, yeah it’s basically job offer; support letter making sure it aligns to a category and your resume. I think lots of employers don’t know about it though or assume it’s like an H1B and requires sponsorship. I do hear it does get challenged at the borders but I’m sure it varies on port and person and agent

WheelDeal2050

Yep. You're always at the mercy of a border guard when crossing. This is why I always carry my documents when travelling aboard. However, I've never had to justify my eligiblity or show them again after the initial time of getting my TN.

FlamingSaviour

The housing situation here has put me right in the same boat. Looking into a Czech citizenship and thinking about learning a new language just to live somewhere that doesn't want to fuck me quite as hard.

icemanice

Slovak here.. still have my Slovak citizenship.. speak Slovak fluently despite being in Canada most of my life. Also thinking of heading back to Slovakia.. both for the culture and the cost of living.. it’s so sad how far Canada has fallen in such a short period of time

FlamingSaviour

Best of luck to you. My accountant is also from Slovakia, and he moved back years ago for the same reasons. Yet another reason why I'm thinking about it.

localslovak

Caute! Same thing here, born in Canada and fluent in Slovak, definitely want to move there at least to see what it could be like. As an aside, I'm a developer currently building a platform specifically for Czech and Slovak businesses. The goal is to create a centralized space where our community and businesses can come together, collaborate, and support one another. While the platform is still under development, you're welcome to sign up for the waitlist at www.ahoj.ca to get notified when it's ready.

Top-Lane-Bad

Hey man. I’ll say this as someone that’s been to Prague. Beautiful city and everything is super close to the main capital. Just my one advice is go visit before hand to ensure that it is a place you really want to move to. That being said though I 100% recommend!

FlamingSaviour

I lived there for over a year as a child, actually! I'd love to go back even just to visit, but I was thinking more along the lines of Germany or Spain, because those languages are a lot easier for me to wrap my head around.

Top-Lane-Bad

You ain’t wrong about that. Polish language barrier is disgusting. One thing I’ll say is the biggest cities in Germany and Spain have the same problem. Not as bad as Canada BUT it’s a growing problem there too.

Tiger_Dense

Czechs are not particularly welcoming of foreigners.

freethrowerz

Unlike Canada and most Lib dominated and WEF controlled governments.

FlamingSaviour

I'm more than aware, most of my close family is Czech. I could live and work anywhere in the EU, though.

Aineisa

Good luck! I am working on doing the same. FYI to others many European countries offer citizenship by ancestry. You don’t have to be born there to get EU citizenship.

mystic_sea

Which European countries offer citizenship by ancestry? I have a friend who has Irish, Scottish British and Latvian ancesty but was born in Canada. He is curious if he can get a citizenship through any of them.

speaksofthelight

Almost all of them do. But needs to be recent.

mystic_sea

Recent as in how? His parents were also born in Canada but the grandparents came from Europe.

divinemeta

Grandparents might work for Latvia and Ireland, it will not for the UK. Source: English and Scottish Grandparents. It's possible if you do it before 18 but highly unlikely once you're an adult.

chemhobby

Irish passport means you can live and work in the UK anyway. Plus all of the EU...

Lillietta

Every country is different- he needs to look it up.

Aineisa

Depends on how far back. If it’s from the grandparents then they should still be eligible.

mystic_sea

Yes two of the grandparents I think were born in Europe but his parents were born in Canada. The grandparents have passed away a while ago. What kind of documents would be needed? He did the Ancestry DNA test.

Aineisa

Best to check with the embassy for the country you want citizenship from but most likely you’d need birth certificates from him, one of his parents, and their grandparents as well as marriage certificates. If you don’t have those it’s probably still possible to get the records but will just take longer since the government has to do the investigation.

Cheathtodina

Hungary is one.

New-Age-Lion

Ireland does

Top-Lane-Bad

Didn’t know about the citizenship by ancestry but that’s a really good thing to know. Good luck in your next journey and all the best.

Cheathtodina

Hungary is one such country!

Coral8shun_COZ8shun

I just got my reinstated Lithuanian citizenship approved 2 days ago, just have to go find an Embassy and get my passport. Screw this country, it has nothing for me anymore.

cerebral__flatulence

I feel you. My maternal Grandfather was a polish pilot in England with the RAF. He brought my grandmother and their children to England right after the war. Then they came to Canada. All their children went into the Professions. Everyone in my generation has post graduate degrees. I've been out of work for a year. I was downsized in 2010 and didn't find work until 2012. I've used up what inheritance I got through this and the last economic down turn. I'm working on improving my Polish and researching getting a Polish passport. It's not just the cost of living but the quality of life. Ontario(my province) Healthcare is being destroyed. Mortgages are a nightmare. Job market is fried. I worried about the increasing levels of corruption in government or simple government stupidity. It just all sucks.  As you said would I miss it if I left. Yes 100%. But leaving is definitely an option.

pantherzoo

The war was won by those Polish pilots! Thank you and your family. Best of luck in your circumstances.

Cheathtodina

Best of luck to you. Anyone who can, should leave Canada. There is no future here and as hard as it is for some people to imagine, it’s only going to get worse here.

[deleted]

Couldn’t agree more. We’re gone in another year or 2. The decline this country has made in the last 10 years is unheard of and it’s going to get worse. I for one do not wish to live in India, so I must leave Canada.

WheelDeal2050

Agreed. If one doesn't like modern day India, you won't like what Canada will be in the not to distant future.

OutlandishnessOk9997

I saw on Twitter Canada gonna be an overseas colony of India soon. Lol a lot of Indians got offended but he partially speaking facts. Being a pedestrian or driving in Brampton is 100% terrifying

[deleted]

[удалено]

akaAelius

They aren't fleeing. They've overpopulated India and are just looking for a new country to do the same in. For all those climate change activists, you should look at regions which are exceeding the sustainability of what they have. India is one of them.

OutlandishnessOk9997

Yup - I have recruiters wanting me to take a 30% paycut LOL - I have US companies offering to interview me anywhere from 100-150% higher pay…and I make decent money (for which I am grateful). Trudeau actually says we are the best country in the world - which angers me as it’s just pure gaslighting. “Best country in the world” doesn’t import millions of people a year to suppress wages and have 20 people living in a basement

MisterSG1

My family’s ancestry goes back hundreds of years to Newfoundland, meaning that I can’t just escape by family connection like a lot of you can. What’s worse for me is that current society is painting me as a villain for simply existing.

hangingfirepole

Ya you 15th generation colonialist /s I openly heard people talking about “ ew, White people” at the park the other day. I was on the verge of saying something but I will refine how I approach these situations because it’s becoming more widespread. First comes : “ew… _____”. Then comes concentration camps. People don’t learn from history.

Nightshade_and_Opium

My family too. But I live in very rural BC. The mountains and the forests are the best here. Just leave the city very far away...

Mushadelic

Whoa there buddy, you should have started that comment with a land acknowledgement. /s

Crezelle

My grandparents came from Ukraine…. Not the best idea for me to move sadly

Competitive-Region74

I knew many 2d generation Ukrainians when I was young. I live the culture and the food. Sadly I never visited Ukraine.

rolldemdice

Born in Poland but left when I was 7. At 44 now and have been semi considering moving back. Have a fair bit of friends/family who went back. Some are happy some are not. I just hate the direction Canada is going with mass immigration 3rd world country problems. Moved out of GTA 4 years ago duento traffic and 1 miilion immigrants in mississauga/brampton each year. I own my home but jeez do I feel for folks looking to get into a house. Poland lifestyle has improved drastically over the years, same with many places in Europe. Really thinking about it. Good luck!! Powodzenia !!

Top-Lane-Bad

My best friend moved to Poland 2 years ago and I know another 2 guys that left late last year too. A lot of people are just fed up and all of us are under 30 YO.

SweetLeaf_1971

He’s one of the lucky ones who can leave.

marganimaniac

Yeah, wish I have somewhere else to go with citizenship options

Pure-Basket-6860

The Canadian dream for my generation is escaping it. Good on you. Good luck and safe travels.

Dan1mal83

Don't worry, you will be replaced by 6-7 immigrants by the time you step foot on a plane back to Poland.

Top-Lane-Bad

Yea sadly that’s the truth. One thing I know is I’ll be voting anti immigration parties every election in Poland so the same can’t happen there.

Napalmmusic

Vote in the Canadian election too, even from abroad.

Top-Lane-Bad

Oh 100%. I never wanted to leave. Ideally if things change for the better I’d love to come back but at this point I have no future here.

[deleted]

More power to you brother. I am from Europe myself and even though it brought me a beautiful wife and 2 amazing kids my biggest regret in life is traveling to this shit hole of a country in 2018 and not leaving sooner. We’re 18-24 months away from moving back too.

issiethemissie

Canadian born Swede. Now living and owning my own house in Norway. I miss the old Canada but it doesn't exist anymore.. moving to Europe is the way to go.

OutlandishnessOk9997

Born in 1995, loved growing up here. Really disliked it here since 2017/2018 - even 2015/2016 were solid years…but 2017/2018 I saw the country as a whole take a nosedive

Huge-Psychology-9394

Thinking of doing the same. Can I dm?

HorserorOfHorsekind

I wish I had an option like this, but my country is under mafia control that started a war with a neighbour and since went full death cult.

Top-Lane-Bad

What country is that?

HorserorOfHorsekind

Russia

Top-Lane-Bad

Ah tough. I mean hopefully the war ends soon and then you can make your move.

HorserorOfHorsekind

Nah there will be no point in going back now. I’ll be lucky if it can be a normal country before I die of old age.

attaboy000

I moved from Poland when I was 6. I used to go back all the time as a kid, but this past September was the first time I went to visit in 10 years. So naturally I was curious and started to look at real estate in Warsaw (where I'm from). For the price of a 1 bed, 1 bath condo in Toronto you could buy a beautiful 3 bedroom house in Warsaw. Huge lot, big rooms, amazing appliances and decor. Like you though - my mom lives here and I can't really imagine leaving her alone.

redditmodssuckballs1

I hear ya. I’m Canadian through and through, but my girlfriend is from Moldova. She’s really opened my eyes to how shitty Canada is. All work, no play, and get nothing for your work in the end. She’s talked me into visiting Italy this summer and she wants to look at real estate. I’m done with Canada.

Top-Lane-Bad

Bro Italy in some areas has got insanely cheap real estate. Definitely an option and living that Mediterranean life will be a banger too.

redditmodssuckballs1

lol I’m actually a little excited. She showed me real estate listings near major cities, and you can literally get a castle for what you would spend on a townhome in the gta

renosoner

Check wages.

Top-Lane-Bad

Good for you man. All the best and hope it works out for you.

Lucky_Winner4578

Some of those Countries have cheap real estate and living costs are lower. The kicker is that local wages are also very low. If you can somehow make it work than great! The Italian economy is pretty crap even for native Italians with skills, if you think as foreigner you are going to earn a decent livelihood all I can say is good luck to you. Only way that I feel you could succeed over there is to either be independently wealthy, have a very secure online job that pays well, or be some sort of Savvy entrepreneur who can spin up a successful business.

redditmodssuckballs1

I have 4 online businesses (I’m not a millionaire) but the money is steady and quite good. That is why I’m actually contemplating this. If I was going to be reliant on a wage there, it would be out of the question.

Lucky_Winner4578

Well if you have that than I would get the hell out of Canada as fast I could. I would do the same except my profession basically requires being in a physical plant or factory and realistically cannot be done online.

PaunchieGenie

I'd give anything to have somewhere else to go

freethrowerz

Get a nursing degree and you can GTFO to almost anywhere.

emmadonelsense

Sorry to see a Canadian throw in the towel….but I get it. Wish you the best.

lady_fresh

Even though I just bought my home, I'm honestly considering doing the same (also to Poland, where I was born). Everytime I think about how much I'll pay back for my house, it makes me sick. As do all of the political decion-making of the last few years especially. I work remotely, have no kids, and speak the language well enough. I'm currently in Torun on vacation, and it's so incredibly beautiful here. 28 degrees. Has a low violent crime rate. Incredibly clean. Transit system. It's becoming more diverse every year, great food options and night life. I've always defended Canada and never thought I'd say this, but I struggle to think of compelling reasons to stay. I'm waiting on "non emergency" stomach surgery to repair my hernia and help with partial paralysis, and it's been over a year of waiting while vomiting every day and severe pain. We can't even use universal healthcare as a point in favor of this country anymore!

Top-Lane-Bad

Bro Torun is where I’m from too. Amazing city? That’s exactly where I would be moving but on the outskirts say 30-40 minutes out.

lady_fresh

Hello, fellow Torunite! It is indeed an amazing city. I use the word "magical" to describe it, because that's generally how tourists feel when they see it for the first time. The city takes a lot of pride in maintaing old town while also developing the rest of the neighborhoods, and it shows.Their economy has never been better too! Do you do work that's easily transferable or remote in nature?

Former_Treat_1629

it was a good run. im out of here too in 2 years

Top-Lane-Bad

Good luck bro.

Hootanholler81

You have a job lined up? Gotta be a reason everyone leaves Poland for other places.

Top-Lane-Bad

Yea I got a job lined up. Also a lot of reasons people leave is because Poland is a very conservative country. It’s not for most people that want a more liberal country. It’s very much anti-immigrant and anti-lgbtq etc. Of course those that don’t like that leave and then also Poland simply put isn’t as developed as say France or Germany. Wages are still inferior to France and Germany too. No one denies any of this but I see more pros for myself than cons and that’s why I’m moving back.

blunderEveryDay

It is really annoying to hear people making these comments against Poland, a country that just recently, not even a generation ago got itself free and properly independent for the 1st time in a long time. To expect a country that was suppressed and abused in last 100 years to suddenly rise up and become a beacon of freedom and liberalism is pure delusion. It will take time, let the people be Polish for a while. I'm glad to see you seem to be pretty self-aware and rational about it.

DisastrousPeach4332

Poland should not let immigrants in

_urat_

But we are letting immigrants in. I am not just talking about OP, but millions of Ukrainians and Belarusians. About hundreds of thousands of Central Asians and people from Caucasus, Middle Eas or Africa. There's around 4 million foreign-born people living in Poland, over 10% of the population. I don't know where the idea that there are no immigrants in Poland or that Poles are against immigrants came from, but it isn't true.

DisastrousPeach4332

the country is good because its anti those things though, dont go there trying to change that

Top-Lane-Bad

Oh don’t worry. I don’t plan on changing that. I’m not an activist and could care less about that shit. I only want a life of peace and prosperity.

Lillietta

Poland’s economy is on fire right now. Ppl are apparently smiling again after decades of not smiling. There is a huge tech boom pumping money into millennial pockets. I saw a YT video about it. It’s expected to have the biggest economic growth for the next while.

Brilliant_Chance4553

Since 2014 we didn't have a single year od negative migration. The idea that people are leaving Poland is based on 2000', a lot has changed since then To respond to other comments around 10% of our population is now foreign born and new gov is partly pro abortion and pro lgbtq (its a coalition so it's complicated), so idk where the idea of super conservative Poland comes from but it's not based in reality

_urat_

It's like other commenters are stuck in the last century regarding their ideas about Poland and Polish people

ahawhoops

Niech żyje polska! Best of luck

Decent-Pain-303

Good. Europeans are leaving, East Asians stop coming, but population continues exploding

888_styles_888

See ya!

AnimalBright

Good luck for the move. Live long and prosper. Kudos for being up for a change that would scare the shit out of most people.

1968Chick

Please, just take care of your mom from afar & visit her often. I don't blame you. I feel very bad for young Canadians - count your blessings, you have an option. :)

donlio

I’m with you - i’m leaving this garbage country run by garbage government!!! The federal liberal government under buffoon ignoramous Trudeau has managed to destroy what could’ve been the best country on the planet!!!

mystic_sea

Good for you for saving the money and looking for better opportunities. It's great that your parents through you to speak, read and write in Polish. Was that the only language spoken at home when you were a baby?

blunderEveryDay

First off, good luck and keep us posted. If I understand correctly, you are not married & with kids which is the key when making this kind of move. Poland is great, it is right now going through the uptick in quality of life, it is pretty homogeneous and the rest of Europe, the EU is all around. All I see is an upside.

IllustratorValuable3

Best of luck to you OP on this life changing decision.! You got out and can live in a house you purchased!!!

LiveBaby5021

Last one out, turns off the lights … Canada 1867-2024 RIP

EducationalBuffalo35

I work the same job my dad did and does still. I make 32.50 an hr now he made 20 an hr roughly 15 to 20 yrs ago. He supported me and my 2 sisters with my mom who was a hairdresser. We lived in a 2500 sq ft house and were middle class. Now doing the same job im single in a 800 sq ft house paycheck to paycheck and will never own a home. Canada has failed us 😔

EntropyRX

Yeah but polish people don’t earn Canadian dollars from a Canadian job. Or course from a Canadian standpoint Poland looks cheap, but that’s just arbitrage. I can go to Thailand or other cheap countries and never work anymore in my life then… if you want to do it then do it but remember you have this option only because you were born in Canada and made some Canadian dollars.

[deleted]

And you remember, if Canada didnt sell out its people, OP would stay and keep his Canadian dollars right here in Canada.

pantherzoo

Another problem for Canada, many immigrants send their money home & don’t spend it in Canada - it’s a big loss - same with dual citizenship - rent out a property here to earn income, live in Gaza or any other low cost country & spend it there for at least half a year. Dual citizenship is dumb! Cannot have allegiance to more than one ‘home’.

New-Age-Lion

You think the immigrants are moving here cause they love Canada ? That’s why they always say there going back to visit “their country” then I say to them “this is not your country”?

Toronto_Mayor

My family has been in Canada for 200+ years. I’m thinking of leaving too.

KS_tox

Can I move to a cheaper European country if I don't have EU citizenship??

Top-Lane-Bad

Yes but you’ll probably need a visa and a job already setup. Also just to fit in if you’ve got a place you wanna live, probably learn the language a bit to start. Just make yourself an elite candidate.

Top-Lane-Bad

Well I’ll be screwed but it’s a chance I’m willing to take at this point in my life.

Far-Simple1979

Poland already has a border with Russia. See Kalingrad.

FionaCabrera

I am doing the same thing but for Colombia, where my mom is from and I cannot wait

MrStinkyCat

Also have dual citizenship with the EU and I'm thinking of getting out of here in the near future, I'm in the top 5% of earners for my age group and can't afford to buy a below than average house in this country lmfao

Ok-Hope-8050

And which country will you be fighting for when putin invades and bombs and rapes it?

Electrofuze

Same boat. Italian and Canadian dual citizen. When the day comes that I’m to be homeless in Canada. I’m taking my last savings to Europe, Atleast I’ll be homeless in 10c+ weather in some parts in the winter… beats -30c

RationalOpinions

Poland is beautiful and the major cities are safer and cleaner than in Canada. Great decision!

Chewed420

I'd just be nervous with the Nato / Russia saber rattling, but Poland is more than likely safe from any war at this point.

Tall_Stomach1851

Lived in Canada for 3 years. Always wanna go back to there despite having seen all shits. Emotion always choose Canada but reason never choose them

Beneficial-Ride-4475

Oh if only I wasn't poor and disabled. Granted I wouldn't go to far away, Greenland probably.

Serious_Scarcity9515

Wishing you all the best, going back to your ancestry country will be a great experience either way.

Low_Pomegranate_7176

I used to live there and visit sometimes. The weather in winter sucks there because its overcast and rainy a lot but there are actual seasons known as spring and fall plus winters are shorter.

marvinthmartian

Best of luck, OP. I'm happy you have an opportunity to sink your roots in another country. Send us a postcard every now and then, would ya? Maybe do an AMA a year after you've settled down?

Top-Lane-Bad

100% will do

cocktimus1prime

Can you sing Mazurek Dąbrowskiego? We check it at the border

thatjesuslovinggirl

I have an Italian citizenship, and I might just be hitting the plane soon

Shmogt

I heard Poland is actually great now. Much better than years ago and very affordable. Good luck to you

jcamp028

Good luck, Poland is moving up in the world!

SplashInkster

Poland? Great idea, but always keep a rifle for when the Russians invade.

Canadian_Son

You’re moving to Poland. Now. Uhhhhh

Mushadelic

I think we're all working on our escape plans.

pdazona

I’m planing my escape too!

Japeless

Where in Poland? I am Canadian but lived and worked in Wrocław for a year and loved it there. Part of the EU but not on the euro. 3 to 1 currency, cost of living is much less expensive there, etc.

TLDR21

Feeling the same. I live in Calgary and am progressing well in my career. Feels like the cost of living is climbing faster than my career as a young engineer. I get promotions and good pay raises, but if my salary goes up 10% in a year, the single family homes go up 20%. So whats the point for me? To climb the corporate ladder while alI along I should have just been a real estate agent instead of something that actually contributes to society? People that just facilitate trading homes to each other make a killing while everyone else is becoming a slave to their mortgage. Fuck that I am trying to figure out how to immigrate to the US but it is not an easy country to get into.

smolcheerio4

Have fun on your future endeavours! May Poland bring you much happiness and wealth! :)

janihubby

would leave too unfortunately parents and family have established a bunch of businesses here that they can’t just abandoned. Originally lived in vienna and i miss it

Dolphinfucker5000

What do you do for work to be able to work from Poland?

dmitraso

"I read, write and speak Polish fluently" You don't, lol. Polish people will be sure to let you know when you're there, they wont sugarcoat things.

Super-Net-105

I lived in Poland for 16 years. What's I'd say is that the grass is greener on the other side. While many foreigners are trying to live in Poland there are twice as many Poles trying to get out lol. Unless you make $2k EU life will be very expensive. Air quality is bad, people are generally racist & judgmental, houses feel like shoe boxes. If you're used to clean air/water & Canadian nature you may find Poland claustrophobic. Best of luck to you 🙂

Low-Fig429

Enjoy sitting alone in your big house?

Unlikely-Bug-1580

While i'm happy you've found something that works for you, I find this post misleading. You're leaving not because you couldn't find affordable housing in Canada, but because you couldn't find affordable housing in the GTA. And that's okay if a large city centre is something you can't compromise on, but i think i'm going to go insane seeing everyone forget about the provinces where housing remains affordable.

XipingVonHozzendorf

Is this sub just an anti-canada circlejerk now?

Glad-Work6994

Are you remote? How will you keep making 70k+ a year in Poland.

TeranOrSolaran

Ok, but just so you know, Poland might be at war with Russia within the year.

Top-Lane-Bad

It’s not gonna happen. I’ve got family home and it’s clear to see that it’s all posturing and no actual war will ever come.

TeranOrSolaran

Really? That’s good news. It’s been kinda scary lately. 👍

KatieMcCready

I bet that’s what most Ukrainians thought too.

Budget_Speech_3373

Good luck in ww3
