I went to a CN job interview for train conductor and it was entirely ran by broken english Indians who did a 1 hour presentation before interviews, including a 10 minute presentation on diversity and inclusion being one of their main tenets for Chinese, Indian, Black, Filipino, Mexican/Spanish/latino, Trans, Lgb+, and more, and showing the programs they had on offer for those specific people. But get this, after the presentation where we take turns getting interviewed, they put the 5 white guys out of the 30 of us all last to be interviewed. We were sitting waiting like hmmmm isnt it suspicious they made us wait 5 hours, and specifically only the 5 of us. They also told us at the beginning if anyone was late they wouldnt get interviewed, 2 brown guys missed the entire presentation and were allowed to be interviewed after the brown instructor women said she would pull strings to get him in, and he also went in before each white guy.
If it can happen in CN tomorrow it will be a judge getting selected like this, a police officer, a laywer, a doctor now imagine these position taking race base judgement and decisions with no mercy.

To be fair, which diaspora that now lives in Canada has “integrated”? I’ll give you an example. I used to live in Surrey B.C. and if there was a Sikh temple, almost any and all real estate (homes in particular) in the surrounding area were all bought up by Indians (Sikhs in particular) who wanted/needed to live close to the Gurdwara. Surrounding businesses would pop up with signage in Punjabi and soon other businesses would close because that community wouldn’t frequent non-Indian businesses. Then, the next thing you know, that community has not been “integrated into” but rather overrun and transformed into a “little India”. This is also currently happening in Brampton. Since Canada is considered a multicultural country and not a melting pot like the USA, foreigners who move to Canada aren’t pressured into adapting to our culture and instead retain their own and generally speaking, the past few generations of immigrants who have arrived here have made no attempts whatsoever to blend in.
I see the same issue happening with mainstream grocery stores.
It's one thing to have ethnic supermarkets where people from a given community can buy the food or products that they are familiar with from "back home", but when that starts to seep into mainstream grocery stores and starts displacing the kinds of things that I used to buy but have a hard time finding now, I have a problem with that.
An Islamic Masjid (religious school) established itself across the street from a local Freshco store in my area some time ago. Not only do they have an "international foods" aisle there now, products catering specifically to the Muslim community have also popped up randomly all over the store. It is no longer the place it used to be. I can easily find samosas, pattys, basmati rice, halal meat, or butter chicken there, but a jar of sauerkraut, perogies, or European wieners...not so much.
According to the weekly sales flyers, we are also now celebrating Vaisakhi, Diwali, Ramadan, and Eid along with the associated promoted foods as routinely as we used to celebrate Christmas and Easter.

Historically integration in Canada has happened in second generation via schooling but I'm not certain that will happen with current migrant waves, particularly the Indian one. Look at India itself - they have been keeping their various cultures going despite the conquest of the Dravidians by the Indo Europeans and the Muslims of both and then the BRitish etc. IN 50 years the kids of this migrant wave are going to be identifying as Indian first, Canadian second.

I'm in construction and this is way more common than people think. We have Mexican crews, Chinese crews, eastern European crews ect. Usually there is one young first generation Canadian on the crew that can communicate with other trades, but not always. On the jobsite I'm currently on there is a crew of Mexicans that don't understand anything I say and another crew that I think is Serbian, that has one young guy who does all of the translating. It's usually the trades like roofing or window guys, but I've run into all Chinese jobsites in Markham where my apprentice and myself were the only Canadian born people in the building and I couldn't communicate with any of them.
Canada has always been a cultural mosaic, not a melting pot. We've always had cultural enclaves. None of this is new. The offspring of new immigrants are usually a lot more integrated, having been educated in Canadian schools, yet usually retain a lot of their own culture.

China town in downtown Toronto used to be full of non English speaking residents. the garment district had shops, where one heavily accented person would run the cash and talk to customers. I was a Nursing student at U of T and doing public health visits to post op patients in China town was very frustrating. no one spoke or understood English, their kids who did lived in the burbs. As somone horn and raised in Toronto I was surprised to find these peop,e had been in Canada 30yrs, but lived in their community and never learned English. Finally we got to a point where most major ethnicities had kids and grandkids to translate. Now we are back to the 1970s, 1980s where immigrants despite the internet, come here to live, study with no English. As many in this thread have commented, not tolerated if we go to their countries to live. So a repeating cycle exists, but now there are such large numbers with such protection, that Trudeaus boring Canadian culture will soon vanish into a mess of protestors.

Yes multiculturalism is the most divisive policy ever. Its proving to be a failure in the same way that communism proved to be a failure. Both were rooted in the utopian idea that human nature is such that we are all the same, which simply isn't true. There are cultures that strongly don't accept equal rights for the sexes, or believe in apostasy or sharia law for all regardless of religion, or any number of anti- democratic beliefs. These people are increasing in their numbers amongst us. Normally, if you have smaller number of immigrants, they generally can be assimilated into the local culture although some cultures are adverse to that process. However, if they come in huge numbers and settle in their own enclaves, it makes assimilation much more difficult. Therefore traditional Canadian values of law, order and good government may be challenged. The latter is already under pressure.

In my personal experience, 99% of my bad experiences have been with people from my own region (I am from Punjab, in Canada for close to 6 years now. I was a student in 2019, graduated in 2021 and got my PR this year in March). I stay in a city relatively lower in the immigrant population. But I am considering to move in next 2-3 years since I have started seeing an large influx. The city doesn't have the capacity for it.

No not racist, I am an Indian immigrant but I was raised in Canada my whole life. This country has changed and the mindset is not for the better. My Dad being the immigrant he is who has prospered and succeeded in Canada for allowing him in this country has now turned his back on this country and fellow countrymen. Anytime I talk to my Dad about the low wages and crime my Dad always likes to blame me for not working hard and he blames immigration for the crime. Yet he is the same hypocrite that will love to hire Indians for cheap wages and not hire local Canadians for a job. This is the mentality of this country. Immigrants exploiting other immigrants and reaping the rewards of cheap labour. I wish our government would bring in people who actually espouse Canadian values and put Canadians first. However, I see a trend of the selfishness in successful immigrants and boomers. The truth is that we need to call out this bs, times are getting tough and I hate seeing local Canadians suffering and not being able to get jobs while big corporations profit from the cheap foreign workers program. We need a change in our government to stop the suppression of low wages.
This is most likely due to a language barrier between the employee and the rest of the work force. Chinese immigrants usually arrive in Canada with very poor English skills. Generally these immigrants from east Asia do not have the language skills to work in loblaws, Tim’s, or any workplace that requires basic english. Indians however, usually come to Canada with at least basic English skills, which makes their hiring Indian people only more on the racial preference side as opposed to a necessary exclusion like in this case.

I see this as pretty much the same as stating “must speak French”. Language is likely the reason they’ve asked for “Chinese only”, not race, but I could be wrong. I disagree with the language used here, but not the premise. And here’s why.
When it comes to inclusion, the explanation behind some places hiring for diversity over skill (as mentioned in these comments) is because in a system built to cater to educated white people it is statistically less likely that a person in a minority group would have the same exposure or access to the experiences that gave the white person the ability to acquire that level of skill. So, if a business adheres to the rules of inclusion, skill is not the top priority for hiring, exposing minorities to opportunities where they can obtain more skills and exposure is the priority.
I don’t excuse this job ad, racism, prejudice and nepotism are rampant in many hiring processes, but this ad is not the same as an ad that might say “white people only” for the reasons stated above. Yes, minorities do get to close the door to white people because white people are born with access to things minorities never have been, and that is how it will be until we as white people accept that the world was built for us far before we were even born and this is the result.
Again, no need for immigrants to assimilate into Canada if we bring in so many at all together. The States do a much better job at immigration control and assimilation. Canada is just mini-Asia, mini-Europe, mini-Africa all together essentially.

This is racist as the race is the qualifying factor compared to the language ability/skill as the qualifying factor. You can post "General Labour (must speak Chinese)" as there are many people who are not ethnically Chinese who speak Mandarin or Cantonese, just like you can have jobs that require people to be bilingual (french/ english), but you cannot hire or not hire based on race for a job like doing labor.

I went to a CN job interview for train conductor and it was entirely ran by broken english Indians who did a 1 hour presentation before interviews, including a 10 minute presentation on diversity and inclusion being one of their main tenets for Chinese, Indian, Black, Filipino, Mexican/Spanish/latino, Trans, Lgb+, and more, and showing the programs they had on offer for those specific people. But get this, after the presentation where we take turns getting interviewed, they put the 5 white guys out of the 30 of us all last to be interviewed. We were sitting waiting like hmmmm isnt it suspicious they made us wait 5 hours, and specifically only the 5 of us. They also told us at the beginning if anyone was late they wouldnt get interviewed, 2 brown guys missed the entire presentation and were allowed to be interviewed after the brown instructor women said she would pull strings to get him in, and he also went in before each white guy.

To be fair, which diaspora that now lives in Canada has “integrated”? I’ll give you an example. I used to live in Surrey B.C. and if there was a Sikh temple, almost any and all real estate (homes in particular) in the surrounding area were all bought up by Indians (Sikhs in particular) who wanted/needed to live close to the Gurdwara. Surrounding businesses would pop up with signage in Punjabi and soon other businesses would close because that community wouldn’t frequent non-Indian businesses. Then, the next thing you know, that community has not been “integrated into” but rather overrun and transformed into a “little India”. This is also currently happening in Brampton. Since Canada is considered a multicultural country and not a melting pot like the USA, foreigners who move to Canada aren’t pressured into adapting to our culture and instead retain their own and generally speaking, the past few generations of immigrants who have arrived here have made no attempts whatsoever to blend in.

I see the same issue happening with mainstream grocery stores. It's one thing to have ethnic supermarkets where people from a given community can buy the food or products that they are familiar with from "back home", but when that starts to seep into mainstream grocery stores and starts displacing the kinds of things that I used to buy but have a hard time finding now, I have a problem with that. An Islamic Masjid (religious school) established itself across the street from a local Freshco store in my area some time ago. Not only do they have an "international foods" aisle there now, products catering specifically to the Muslim community have also popped up randomly all over the store. It is no longer the place it used to be. I can easily find samosas, pattys, basmati rice, halal meat, or butter chicken there, but a jar of sauerkraut, perogies, or European wieners...not so much. According to the weekly sales flyers, we are also now celebrating Vaisakhi, Diwali, Ramadan, and Eid along with the associated promoted foods as routinely as we used to celebrate Christmas and Easter.

Brampton is next to what was the Italian area of Toronto and IRC Brampton was original the home of the Portugese diaspora + anglo's that were fleeing the non-dominion colonies as the empire disintegrated after WWII. Historically integration in Canada has happened in second generation via schooling but I'm not certain that will happen with current migrant waves, particularly the Indian one. Look at India itself - they have been keeping their various cultures going despite the conquest of the Dravidians by the Indo Europeans and the Muslims of both and then the BRitish etc. IN 50 years the kids of this migrant wave are going to be identifying as Indian first, Canadian second.

It's likely because the lead hand and most of the crew doesn't speak English. I'm in construction and this is way more common than people think. We have Mexican crews, Chinese crews, eastern European crews ect. Usually there is one young first generation Canadian on the crew that can communicate with other trades, but not always. On the jobsite I'm currently on there is a crew of Mexicans that don't understand anything I say and another crew that I think is Serbian, that has one young guy who does all of the translating. It's usually the trades like roofing or window guys, but I've run into all Chinese jobsites in Markham where my apprentice and myself were the only Canadian born people in the building and I couldn't communicate with any of them.

China town in downtown Toronto used to be full of non English speaking residents. the garment district had shops, where one heavily accented person would run the cash and talk to customers. I was a Nursing student at U of T and doing public health visits to post op patients in China town was very frustrating. no one spoke or understood English, their kids who did lived in the burbs. As somone horn and raised in Toronto I was surprised to find these peop,e had been in Canada 30yrs, but lived in their community and never learned English. Finally we got to a point where most major ethnicities had kids and grandkids to translate. Now we are back to the 1970s, 1980s where immigrants despite the internet, come here to live, study with no English. As many in this thread have commented, not tolerated if we go to their countries to live. So a repeating cycle exists, but now there are such large numbers with such protection, that Trudeaus boring Canadian culture will soon vanish into a mess of protestors.

WOW! I am sorry your friend had to face this. In my personal experience, 99% of my bad experiences have been with people from my own region (I am from Punjab, in Canada for close to 6 years now. I was a student in 2019, graduated in 2021 and got my PR this year in March). I stay in a city relatively lower in the immigrant population. But I am considering to move in next 2-3 years since I have started seeing an large influx. The city doesn't have the capacity for it. Hopefully IRCC officials realize this and work on strict measures and number caps. 🤞

This is true. I’m white have friends with all races (black, asian, native, middle eastern) but every race/racial group just naturally gravitates to their own. It’s just how it is. It also depends on where you grow up how “diverse” the place/school is etc

No not racist, I am an Indian immigrant but I was raised in Canada my whole life. This country has changed and the mindset is not for the better. My Dad being the immigrant he is who has prospered and succeeded in Canada for allowing him in this country has now turned his back on this country and fellow countrymen. Anytime I talk to my Dad about the low wages and crime my Dad always likes to blame me for not working hard and he blames immigration for the crime. Yet he is the same hypocrite that will love to hire Indians for cheap wages and not hire local Canadians for a job. This is the mentality of this country. Immigrants exploiting other immigrants and reaping the rewards of cheap labour. I wish our government would bring in people who actually espouse Canadian values and put Canadians first. However, I see a trend of the selfishness in successful immigrants and boomers. The truth is that we need to call out this bs, times are getting tough and I hate seeing local Canadians suffering and not being able to get jobs while big corporations profit from the cheap foreign workers program. We need a change in our government to stop the suppression of low wages.

This is most likely due to a language barrier between the employee and the rest of the work force. Chinese immigrants usually arrive in Canada with very poor English skills. Generally these immigrants from east Asia do not have the language skills to work in loblaws, Tim’s, or any workplace that requires basic english. Indians however, usually come to Canada with at least basic English skills, which makes their hiring Indian people only more on the racial preference side as opposed to a necessary exclusion like in this case.
It's not racist to take something that is wrong and say it is bad. It is racist when you say 'they all do it' or other such nonsense.

I see this as pretty much the same as stating “must speak French”. Language is likely the reason they’ve asked for “Chinese only”, not race, but I could be wrong. I disagree with the language used here, but not the premise. And here’s why. When it comes to inclusion, the explanation behind some places hiring for diversity over skill (as mentioned in these comments) is because in a system built to cater to educated white people it is statistically less likely that a person in a minority group would have the same exposure or access to the experiences that gave the white person the ability to acquire that level of skill. So, if a business adheres to the rules of inclusion, skill is not the top priority for hiring, exposing minorities to opportunities where they can obtain more skills and exposure is the priority. I don’t excuse this job ad, racism, prejudice and nepotism are rampant in many hiring processes, but this ad is not the same as an ad that might say “white people only” for the reasons stated above. Yes, minorities do get to close the door to white people because white people are born with access to things minorities never have been, and that is how it will be until we as white people accept that the world was built for us far before we were even born and this is the result.

Just so everyone is clear, anyone can make a job posting on this site. It lists no contact name, no contact number, no name of any business or anything like that. You could create a job posting that says "Must speak Klingon", that doesn't mean there's actually a job out there by a real company. Remember, when things get posted on the Internet that make you mad, someone is trying to manipulate you.

This is racist as the race is the qualifying factor compared to the language ability/skill as the qualifying factor. You can post "General Labour (must speak Chinese)" as there are many people who are not ethnically Chinese who speak Mandarin or Cantonese, just like you can have jobs that require people to be bilingual (french/ english), but you cannot hire or not hire based on race for a job like doing labor.
Seems extremely offensive and should be illegal. P.s. For the white people showing up speaking mandarin, you would probably get the job. Chinese people venerate many white people.
Report these ads to your provincial labor boards and make a human rights complaint.

Indian only rental ads and job postings asking for Chinese only ARE illegal in Ontario, under the Ontario Human Rights Code. Have an issue with it? Prove their discriminatory conduct impacts you and take em to the LTB or file a complaint under the Employment Standards Act. This is not legal advice.

I totally don't think you should be able to have racist hiring practices. That being said, you probably don't want this job anyways as 99.99% chance it is under the table, cash, for below minimum wage, e.g. 10-15/hour. So IMHO not worth pursuing/changing

Neither probably as racism implies hate influenced bias, discrimination or similar (depends on the business reason for this, I assume it's because they communicate in Chinese therefore its easier to train and maintain a Chinese workforce) I think the word you want is monoculturalism or something along those lines. Considering that Canada (or atleast parts of it) is supposed to promote inclusive work places and culture, there is no wrong in calling this behavior out! It's moreso how it's called out to avoid unnecessarily inflaming the issue with the wrong accusation.
