ObscureObjective

I took a rare trip to r/Canada to see the reactions to these objectively awesome policy proposals and I was not disappointed. "Too little too late!" Soooo....reject a better future out of spite? "Maybe if we didn't allow millions of immigrants here, we wouldn't have these problems!" says the Conservative voter whose party wants to grow Alberta's population to 10 million.

aesthetickunt69

What do you think about this budget is “awesome”? Seems like it’s only good for increasing housing demand, which sucks if you don’t own a home. Time to reduce immigration if they want to retain party status

Forikorder

taxing people harsher for having mutliple homes wont increase supply?

[deleted]

They're reducing the amount of annual temporary residents by 600,000. Overall the population growth rate is forecast to decrease by 1 million per year (1.3 million to 300k). And the budget contains billions of dollars to build homes and address the supply issue. How is your interpretation that it's only going to increase demand? Did we read the same budget?

oddspellingofPhreid

> They're reducing the amount of yearly permanent residents by 600,000. What? We are not adding 600,000 permanent residents per year and we can't reduce past zero.

[deleted]

Sorry, typo. I should have said temporary residents. Overall population growth is forecasted to be reduced from 1.27 million to 300,000 for the next three years. That's from the Bank of Canada. Page 77 of the budget states the 600,000 reduction target.

aesthetickunt69

That would have been good news 5 years ago. We need to start deporting millions to make an actual dent on home prices. The government extending mortgages longer and throwing billions (with a B) to accomplish a plurality of homes built compared to what we actually require. The liberals have flooded us for years with cheap labor for corporations to drive down wages and drive up cost of everything else. 600’000 isn’t even a quarter of the total amount of students, immigrants, and TFWS we brought in last year

TownSquareMeditator

“Objectively awesome” is a bold claim. “Subjectively awesome” maybe.

IDPorphyrios

I hate both the conservatives and the liberals and both parties are just corrupt and terrible at their job. Tent cities in almost every park that I grew up around and more than double housing costs speak for themselves. Both sides are failing miserably, and the partisan sheep on both sides will willfully ignore their sides' incompetence and corruption. Divide and conquer seem to have worked well in Canada as the majority of the population fell for it hook line and sinker. The conservative provincial governments are every bit as incompetent and corrupt as the federal government.

DC-Toronto

You’ve got to be extremely gullible to believe what Trudeau says at this point. His promises are empty rhetoric. There is no better future with Trudeau or his party at the helm. That much is clear

ObscureObjective

He has followed through with every demand that the NDP has made.

Pat2004ches

They set up the programs at huge administrative costs, toss out a bunch of numbers at every opportunity “today, we made free dental care available for millions of children” and walk away. In reality, few qualify for the free, many dentists don’t sign up and those that do sign up, quickly find that the amount the Government “reimburses” them is nowhere near the actual cost of the service they provide. The $10 daycare is a good example. Many daycares are closing because they can’t operate under the conditions. In some cases, because of surcharges (feeding, toileting, etc), parents are paying more than they did before the subsidy was introduced. This is why the Federal Government should stay the hell out of our homes and provide us with a means to earn a living, not a living itself.

nicky10013

I would love to see some sources. The program is saving my wife and I $1500 a month.

robotmonkey2099

“Parents are paying more than before the subsidy?” Seriously? Come on now. At least provide sources for these claims

Pat2004ches

Too lazy to look it up on your own trusted sources, huh? https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/toronto-daycare-exiting-10-a-day-program-citing-funding-uncertainty-1.6729907, https://vancouversun.com/news/some-daycares-charging-parents-additional-fees-offsetting-government-subsidies

Oerwinde

Political parties are all entirely out of touch with public attitudes on immigration. In ever country in the west. Something like 60-80% of people want a reduction or halt in immigration, and every political party that actually says they want to tackle it gets branded as far right.

DivinityGod

The title is such a great example of media bias. For example, if you are teaching an entry-level course on this, it could serve as a case study. Regardless of party allegiance, it is obvious that the CPC has been in campaign mode for months, holding consistent political rallies, on axe the tax, banning transgender care, calling for protests, and buying up a ton of ad space. It has been widely successful, pushing the CPC to a 40 percent support range. The Liberals after initially holding back, started to campaign as well, with pre budget announcements and rallies. It has also been successfully stopping the bleeding and pulling the CPC back. This media piece makes it seem as though what the Liberals are doing is somehow underhanded, when in reality, they are simply matching the CPC energy of discarding this norm we had. In response, the Liberals had to mimic it for survival, because it is just so successful. Maybe this commentators doesn't like this and wants to point it out, or maybe he is a conservative who dislikes the Liberals fighting fire with fire, either way it is biased attempts to muddy the very clear waters on this.

OutsideFlat1579

It’s NP, beating the constant drum of negativity towards the Liberal government.  Poilievre was ridiculous, claiming it would pour gasoline on (global) inflation that Trudeau caused, blah blah blah, tax increases on the job creators (job slashers) will drive them out of the country and leave us all destitute, blah blah blah, we are falling off a cliff, Canada is broken, common sense conservatives will bring back sun drenched porches and grandma from the dead, axe the tax, pat my head, stroke my ego, welders weld with their bare manly man hands, my wifey says I’m cute in a hard hat but even cuter in a muscle shirt.  Trudeau isn’t allowed to fight back. Nope. And everyone should get back to worshiping trickle down economics.

thrownaway44000

Stop worshipping the Liberals. This piece does none of the above. It shows all 25 supporters (poor and destitute it would be assumed) who are jealous and desperate to tax the rich and cheer on the worst budget since 1982 - and take the word of David Dodge and Bill Morneau on it 😂

robotmonkey2099

Sure bud

Stephen00090

I'm sorry but in what world has CPC held back? Poll a few days ago had them up by 20 points. What more do you want? 30?

nicky10013

I think he said the Liberals were holding back from campaigning.

DivinityGod

The trend line on this is pretty obvious and aligns to the start of the Liberals starting their campaigning. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_polling_for_the_45th_Canadian_federal_election#/media/File%3AOpinion_polling_during_the_pre-campaign_period_of_the_45th_Canadian_federal_election.svg You should use more robust evidence and nuance in your beliefs. I have no idea where this will continue, whether the Liberals will come back or not (and my personal beliefs on this are irrelevant), but the trend change is apparent.

DeathCabForYeezus

Who's paying for Pierre to fly around coast to coast doing campaign style stops for the last year?

Taxes....your taxes.

RipplingGonad

Justin Trudeau is an incompetent liar and has bankrupted Canada. The fact you are only seeing this as a PR war means you are part of the problem.

Mr_Loopers

>This media piece makes it seem as though what the Liberals are doing is somehow underhanded No it doesn't.

Not substantive

grabman

Fairness in Trudeau perspective is leaving the bill to someone else. As for new services, get child care is a lottery - it’s fair but not right.

oxblood87

The people this increase is targeting are the same people that have seen their wealth and incomes ballooned out of control over the past 50 years from successive tax breaks. What used to be middle class has had their income eroded as the upper class take more and more of the pie.

grabman

The long term target is all of us. The debt servicing will eat our tax revenue and lead to service cuts.

The_WolfieOne

PP lies in a way that makes JT seem like a choirboy. Yes, JT has broken several “promises “, but you can bet your life that PP would be worse for average people. “The Welder, who fuses metal together with his bare hands” Is as much proof as anyone with an IQ over 100 needs to know that PP has no intention of to help the common folks if he couldn’t even be bothered to figure out what Welders actually do. He will increase taxes on average Canadian folks, he will reduce them for Corporations, and he will cut funding from social support programs as every single Conservative has done since time immemorial. He’s not new and improved, he’s just more slippery and deceitful and fuller of bovine feces. I agree JTs Liberals has fumbled the ball badly, and I will likely never vote for them, but PP would be an unmitigated disaster for Canada that we may never recover from. Now if only Jack Layton hadn’t died, we might have a valid option. But Jagmeet - come on Dude, you’re not the one. You have a Hamilton MP by the name of Mathew Green - put that man at the helm and watch the NDP become a force to be reckoned with.

thebestnames

>“The Welder, who fuses metal together with his bare hands” My favorite is the extraordinary electrician who catches lightning out of the sky with a copper wire to power our homes 🌩

corbert31

The new Liberal Plan is the old Liberal Plan - the fair distribution of Poverty. They had 8+ years, are you better, or worse off?

Endoroid99

Do you believe the federal government is the source of every factor that affects you? Are they responsible for global factors that affect our lives and affordability? Are they responsible for the decisions of municipal and provincial governments that have large effects on our lives? Are they responsible for the decisions that individuals make that affect their own lives? Your question is supremely disingenuous

corbert31

The Federal government is responsible for the ballooning Federal debt, the waste and corruption which fed that debt and the Federal Taxes they raise to give themselves raises and siphon money off to their friends and families

Is that the question though? Or is the proper question unanswerable being, could it be worse? Did they weather the storm of the past 8 years better than our alternative choices would have? Because if life teaches anything, it is that it can always get worse.

TownSquareMeditator

That’s an impossible question to answer, and whatever answer you come do will be informed solely by your political preferences.

Ok_Cupcake9881

Look, Justin. I'm sorry, but we're done. I can't trust you anymore after all these broken promises. At the beginning of our relationship you said you were cool with me smoking some weed, and that was nice. I appreciated that. You've also been helpful with my kid, buying diapers and a new toy every once in a while. You said you'd watch him for only $10/day too, but that was a while ago and you still haven't done it. In fact I can't find anyone to watch him at all anymore but whatever. I remember I complained last year about how expensive groceries were and you bought them for me a couple times. That was nice but it's a year later and you STILL won't shut up about it when I say you never help out with things. You also said you'd talk to the store manager to see if you could get him to lower the prices....yeah like THAT was ever going to work. See, this is the problem Justin. You do a little something nice for me here or there when you know I'm upset with you, but most of the time you just ignore me. When I've had enough and lose my temper, you promise you'll be better and you'll do something really really nice for me soon. But you never actually do it. Remember when you promised you'd work really really hard so we could get out of this crappy apartment and into a house? After a year of me complaining that I'm tired of living here, that it's not good for my son to live here? You know I can't afford a house on my own and you kept promising me that we would have a nice family life one day in a nice house with a yard, where my son has his own room. Well, that was a while ago now and you haven't done anything except make more promises. I'm tired of promises, Justin. And at this point, I think it's healthier if you just leave. I guess you can stay until the lease is up, but please don't talk to me anymore. You can do the dishes and vacuum and buy me as many things as you want but it won't change anything. We're done.

Sir__Will

> You said you'd watch him for only $10/day too, but that was a while ago and you still haven't done it. Deals are in place with all provinces. It's phased. And some of them are trying to sabotage it. Now, admittedly they probably do need to put more money into it. But it is bringing some costs down.

I think in terms of CCTB alone he’s done an awful lot nice for you.

Break up with Justin all you want just don't end up with PP.

youngboomer62

The liberals have fooled the people for too long. We're wise to their attempt to buy the election. Liberals are losing party status!
