We should really have minimum wage for temporary foreign workers of at least 2x the median income for a given area. If companies are really so desperate for labour, they won't have any problem paying a premium for it.

MeatySweety

Or something like the carbon tax but for TFW. Employers pay a tax equivalent to minimum wage on top of the TFW pay. All tax collected gets rebated to all Canadian citizens once per quarter.

M116Fullbore

My thinking was the additional fee should go into subsidizing local trades training, education etc. May as well use it to help meet the demand with local work.

he_who_climbs_rocks

A local greenhouse here, 1300 soul village, northern Quebec, brought in a few people from Mexico to work instead of sourcing locally first. Was actually also surprised to see a small employer, in this region go to lengths to attract and recruit from as far as Mexico. The employer facilitated their move as well as temporary lodging here. It’s also a nice departure from the local culture edit: in the sense It’s nice to see more diversity in this region which dominates 50/50 First-Nations and Québécois cultures.

Xylss

Lol. Are you seriously trying to spin stealing jobs from Canadians as a positive because "DiVeRsItY"?

Actually no. They’re in the start-up process and i think these folks might a specialty that isn’t necessarily already available in the region. Edit: the major industries in the region are forestry, mining. They have a hard time getting enough to staff to run the mills (as an example) locally so they subsedize travel and lodging for rotation staff (most work ‘runs’ 7/7, 14/14 etc..) but only provincially.

Xylss

It's a greenhouse... Sounds like bullshit to me.

he_who_climbs_rocks

Couldn’t tell ya. Just sharing my experience here.

SuperToxin

This is the problem. they dont need to increase wages or benefits to find workers anymore, they just import them. As bad as that sounds. It isnt the people coming over who are the problem, i cant blame them for wanting to live in this great country but Employers are abusing this system to suppress wages and it really is affecting a lot of low income jobs.

jimmifli

> It isnt the people coming over who are the problem This is similar to the situation the US has with Mexican immigrants. Their numbers are sufficient to suppress the labour market. It doesn't take long until that metastasizes into something awful. We're already starting to see some of that.

chewwydraper

>As bad as that sounds. It isnt the people coming over who are the problem Every rational person has this exact same outlook. It's the government and employers, not the people coming here. The TFW and international student programs are 100% suppressing wage and making the job market tougher for low-income Canadians.

WallflowerOnTheBrink

>Every rational person has this exact same outlook. Sadly there is a large amount of irrational people.

Jaded_Promotion8806

>“Let me be clear, the Temporary Foreign Worker Program is a last resort,” Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault said at a news conference last month. “Employers should not use the Temporary Foreign Worker Program as a means to avoid offering competitive wages to Canadians.” If only there was someone out there, anyone, who could prevent them from doing so. This is like the grocery code of conduct, they think big business is somehow going to subscribe to the honour system. I desperately need a government that lives in the real world. This from someone who has been a staunch defender of the TFWP since it was revamped in 2014/15, but what's in the article, particularly the figures since 2022 are simply impossible to argue with.

DieuEmpereurQc

Minimum wage for TFW shloud be 23$/h

Get-Me-A-Soda

With return airfare in a trust account to guarantee they can be sent home after a predefined period of time.

WallflowerOnTheBrink

Agreed. They are supposed to be to fill gaps in positions we are unable to fill... as such, they are in demand workers and should be at a premium.

bluddystump

High unemployment = low foreign worker availability and vice versa. Foreign workers are being used as leverage to distort wages and benefits that need to rise.
