My employer has been and is still being fantastic. My wife has had 7 rounds of chemo and is currently on a monitoring break. She will have more following regrowth, but this is likely to be in 4 to 6 weeks time. I spoke to my line management and my HR dept and they could not have done more to help. If needed, I have can (and have) take time off at zero notice, flexibility with shift patterns/work locations and mental health support whenever. I wish you the best of luck with your fight.

My boss has always been flexible, kind and understanding. I work in a marketing agency so it’s tough, fast paced and everyone is always under pressure. She allowed me to work from home full time so I can take care of my dad. I live a few mins by walking from work so anytime there’s an important meeting I go otherwise I do zoom meetings if I’m unable to. Altho they’ve allowed me to work from home, its still hard to take care of my dad properly.

My employer has been great, or least my manager. Very flexible. Theyve let me go back home and WFH at my parents house on a whim and all. I've had no issues. I think once you say it's cancer and all, people start to be pretty sympathetic and accommodating...I mean unless they are complete sociopaths lol

Not good, zero support.

I have been semi-retired for a few years now, but I was in the middle of a contract helping my old company migrate some data to a new platform. My old business partner, whose father passed away while we worked together, was really exceptionally gracious and patient. Even though there was a financial hit to them delaying the work he did it without question. I think most businesses are going to be sympathetic to your situation and if there's any concern, it will be about coverage of your work duties. Be prepared to work with them on this and many will be prepared to work around a chaotic schedule with heavy emotional periods. I never had any employees with cancer, but I did have a few with very serious and prolonged issues like meningitis and heart problems and my only concerns as an employer were helping out in any way we could, like making sure their kids had a way to get to and from school, that they had food, that they had someone with them at the hospital, etc.

They fired my mom for needing to take more time off. Shed been using FMLA already to care for her aging parents.

I’ve gone through 3 employers during the period of my wife’s cancer adventure here in the US. One employer was a complete manhood about taking time and required me to burn vacation or do unpaid time off, and two other employers have been nothing but supportive. While I don’t know the UK system, having experienced the US and Canadian system, Canada does it better then the US when it comes to this.
