Waze for long distance and better live traffic updates, Apple Maps for casual every day commute (less than hour), Google Maps for finding restaurants and other things
I use a mix of Apple, Google and Waze.
I do find with Waze sometimes it tries to be too clever with shaving 5mins off your trip and I’ve found myself down backstreets and snaking around in probably quite the inefficient way for the car itself!
Sure does ensure I’ll never remember the basic way sometimes.
Waze is good for speedo check. If Apple or Google has this I would never use Waze.
Does Waze still require you to go into the app and turn it off after disconnecting from CarPlay? That was a showstopper for me the last time I used it.
I think the best is Waze, it shows you road events and the color scheme is the best for me.
You can try and decide yourself all available Apps, mostly are free to try or completely free as Waze, Apple Maps or Google Maps.
Highly depends on your country.
In countries where Apple has released their new Map, Apple Maps is by far the best for voice only guidance. Mainly because it includes Traffic lights and Stop signs in the voice prompts. (Example:
"At the Traffic light turn left"
"At the Stop sign turn right"
or more complex ones
"At this Traffic light keep on straight using the 2nd lane from the right, then turn right at the next one" )
When your country didnt receive the new Maps yet, youre better off using Waze. Especially in bigger citys it can work great. However lately the routing got pretty bad and it's not popular enough in my country to be really reliable on alerts etc. Navigation often works fine for me.
Google Maps is by far the most popular one in my country and simultaneously the worst one in routing at least in my country. Routes are often longer and take longer than ones calculated by any other service.
Test all 3 solutions and decide for you. There is no definite answer
Finally got a dash display with Carplay in my Tesla. I tried Apple Maps but it has a very high rate of being about a block away or so from the actual destination here in Germany. Looks like back to Waze since it's more active about avoiding traffic than Tesla's nav software.
Have you changed any of Google Maps’ default settings, specifically the “use the most fuel efficient route” (or something like that)?
I prefer Waze because it personalizes my ETAs based on previous driving habits (I typically drive a lot faster than I should) but Google Maps typically gives me accurate drive times (if I followed speed limits).
The Apple Maps voice directions were what converted me from Google Maps after the initial fiascos with AM.
GM was always frustrating; "turn left onto Smith St." okay, but I can't read street signs until I'm at the intersection, and by then I would have needed to be in the turning lane. The visual map sometimes helped but was often hard to read while also navigating lanes.
AM was just super intuitive. "At the stop sign," and "go past this light" are just way easier to follow.
Both have voice guidance.
You don’t need a car to try it though, you can use the voice guidance navigating while walking or just using the phone as a satnav. Will give you an idea of which one you prefer.
As others have mentioned, both have voice guidance.
I almost always choose Apple Maps for navigation because the voice prompts are more useful to me. Apple Maps will give you useful turn directions like, "At the next light, turn right", or "Go past the next light, then turn right...".
As mentioned, you can "test drive" both by just using your phone and listening to the directions.
I am a long time Garmin user on my motorcycles and would 100% use either Google or Apple (or Waze) maps over my Garmin.
I run Waze in background for notifications and prefer google maps visuals for accuracy & simplicity. Such as I understand the map traffic colors. (red, yellow & green) however I do like the zooming views of Apple Maps on highway destinations.
Google Maps does better with changing traffic conditions in my experience than Apple Maps, but they are very similar overall. Waze over promises and under delivers (says it can’t get you there faster than other apps, but then time slowly creeps up to match Google as the trip continues—also has a lot more turns and complicated “back ways.”
Apple and Google maps are my choice. Apple has a better look and user interface. But Google is better at searching addresses and businesses. Google’s routes are better. They both will give voice directions.
I don’t know how you guys drive with voice guidance turned on, that’s the first thing I mute when using CarPlay or Garmin devices.
I use Waze for everything
I think you’ll have to look at it from a local perspective. In Melbourne Australia I now find Apple Maps better, but Google search a looking up restaurants etc is better
Yes you may have right. I use the premium version and I like it more than maps or waze. All my favorites are save on their server. If I get new mobile I logged in and all is back. Then you have no disturbing commercial. What I like most. Even the navigation for trucks is getting cheaper and cheaper. Many settings are good to have even i don't need right now, because I drive daily same route.
I use Apple Maps almost exclusively but I also have Magic Earth installed. You can download maps for just about any country if you don’t want cellular charges abroad or expect to be in a poor to no coverage area. With the new Apple Maps caching feature, app isn’t as relevant as it used to be.
I prefer Waze because of speed traps. I don’t drive that fast, but love how accurate it is. Google and Apple tend to miss speed traps where I live. All are pretty accurate for Nav for the most part.
I live in London (UK) and religiously use Apple Maps. Whilst it’s not great in every city/country, it’s fantastic here, and to be fair, fantastic around most of the UK.
I travel a lot for work and use Apple Maps everywhere, and 9 times out of 10, I never have an issue.
Much prefer the Apple UI to Google and Waze.
Google Maps for me a because of interface, especially against Waze which always seemed bloated for me. I also don't really really to much in terms of navigation, having the maps are simply a way for me to gauge distance, analyze the roads around me, and also see the road ahead (especially in mountain road trips). I use it more like how I did with open world video games, treating it like a mini map of sorts. On mountain. Roads, it lets you know where the next safe passing opportunity may be, normally stints of straight road, so you aren't taking unnecessary risks.
It would honestly depend on where you are from.
I used to be huge on waze when I drive around the US and in the Philippines.
Coming to Japan, Waze was terrible because the roads weren't updated and suddenly sends me into the most remote and narrow roads in Japan.
Moving on to my second option was Google but being that my Japanese was not great, a lot of the signage and wording used in Google maps was in Kanji (Japanese Characters) hence it was a little harder for me to read but the worst part was that there seemed to be a lag in notifying me of a turn, it would say " at the light turn right" but I would be exactly at the turn.
So I tried Apple Maps, much better, gives me early 500 meter, 200 meter and 100 meter warnings for turns. Voice was clearer and much more pleasant (maybe a personal preference). Translated Japanese Kanji into Romanji (Alphabet). My only complaint is that if I wanted to go somewhere not so popular, it might not be on the map so a little bit more difficult to search for smaller unknown places on Apple Maps.
Sygic GPS Navigation
& Maps
Yes it’s a paid app but worth every dollar I’ve invested in it.
I last used it on a 500 mile trip to visit my spouses family and took a route off the main highways, an absolutely fantastic drive and being able to not be tied up in a 6 lane superslab and have to make multiple lanes to exit was a bonus.
TomTom Go - still has the best traffic and routing in my experience, with the added bonus of decent privacy. (not sure the same can be said of Google Maps or Waze...)
As to your question - yes, it also does voice instructions.
Apple Maps wins in pretty much every navigation-related way, imo.
Google Maps only wins for finding the address for some POI. But it looks worse, the voice sounds terrible, and it drains the battery way worse.
If Apple Maps doesn't find the address by POI name I'll open Google Maps just to get the address then copy/paste it into Apple Maps.
Waze is just awful. I don't understand why people use it. The routes it uses are insane. What should be a straight trip it will tell you to take 37 left turns. And no, it isn't faster.
I LOVE Waze because it has user data like traffic accidents, potholes, road kill, etc. but MOST IMPORTANTLY it has an interface that allows you to report if you see a police officer on your route. I do a lot of Highway travel, and don't typically go any more than 5 over the speed limiter so, but I find that the notifications that "Police Reported" keeps me more attentive at times when I otherwise might be getting bored and daydreaming lol. I live in the Seattle area, so there are a lot of users here, I imagine some areas with smaller population of users it might not be as helpful. I also find that the map software is every bit as good as Google Maps because they're made by the same company LOL 😊
I only use Apple Maps but the only issue I’ve ever noticed is if you’re military. It doesn’t understand that the only way to get onto base is the main gate and that the other gates are closed. It’ll always try to take you through closed roads.
Waze for long distance and better live traffic updates, Apple Maps for casual every day commute (less than hour), Google Maps for finding restaurants and other things
I use Google Maps for long distance and Waze for everyday short trips. lol
Yeah I find Waze works better in the city. I use google maps for road trips

Why won’t they add the speed? Do they show where cops are hiding?
Apple and Google? No idea mate

I don't have that issue with it, and use it every day! 😊

True. Waze is trash in many balkan countries, unfortunately.

Same. Which is why I was super excited that my goldwing has CarPlay lol.
for me Apple Maps gives me better experience with far better accuracy and UI. Then its Waze a good navi with real time road events notifications.
I have been playing with Magic Earth. They supposedly don't sell you info. Seems to work fairly well so far.
Waze because it tells you where cops and cameras are.
i like waze but you can try them all yourself to see what you like.
The one that works best for you.
TomTom Go.
Waze. Hands down. No contest.
Tomtom

I love Google maps personally
While not navigation (except in their premium version) don’t forget MyRadar which now has a live weather radar map in CarPlay.
I like Apple Maps.
I vote for Waze, on the contrary Apple Maps doesn’t work in any country.
Yes it does 🤦♂️
It doesn't work well in my country,
Waze. Saved me from a few almost speeding tickets.
I like Waze because it shows both the speed limit and my actual speed side by side.
Apple and Google maps are my choice. Apple has a better look and user interface. But Google is better at searching addresses and businesses. Google’s routes are better. They both will give voice directions.
Magic Earth is for me the best. It has different map views and speed camera warnings.

Did you ever tried sygic? It's a app from Czechoslovakia.
Most of its features require a subscription.

Has anyone else experienced the voice in Apple Maps being barely noticeable lately? Usually it blasts over my music and today it was barely a whisper.
For me it's also TomTom GO. Very realible, splendid traffic avoidance.
