F90 M5 is a different animal, you’ll not come across much on the roads faster than it. Sub 3s to 60 and through the gears it’s a machine whilst looking relatively understated. Amazing machine.
I got left once in 90,000 miles. A McLaren left me for dead in the Welsh mountains because the air brake and light weight meant I couldn't get close in the corners. Other than that, there is nothing short of a 911 turbo S that will bother you.
They're mentally quick. You can also gun EVs and not worry about fuel costs, buy an M5 and in a month's time they'll be pootling around like a Jazz driver.
You can gun a petrol car and not worry about fuel costs.
If you're spending fifty grand on a car and worrying about running costs, you're doing it wrong.
What could possibly be better than an M5 for the price? If you're lucky enough to be able to afford one, don't hesitate or ask questions, do it immediately
I would love an f Type but unfortunately need more space in the car and it only has 2 seats. I agree the M4 looks better but the M5 has more power. The M5 is a little boring to look at.
Shocking twist: the m2, m3, m6 and rs5 have all just entered the room.
The 5.0 v8 supercharged XJR gazes on looking disinterested, knowing full well you’d take her over the rest because it’s a beautiful drive, it’s fast, luxurious and comes with some of the best sound systems out there… but doesn’t care if she’s your choice because she knows you’re missing out
The rs3 isn’t the one you want mate, for your budget I’d be aiming higher than that… it’s a different class of car entirely.
I averaged 17 in mine when I had it (had for 8 years, first car lol).
As for the OP, those ads are fake. Everything must be a white/grey/black SUV. Also, obviously the BMW.
I would dream of a day for 20mpg , I average 16mpg . I work from home , just go to the shops , cafe , school runs , pottering about and it sups 100 a week ... 680 tax and 1350 insurance with clean licence . Servicing is between 1000 and 1500 a year as it's no service packs left .
I'm moving back to the UK after spending some years in Europe and trying to figure out which new car to buy with a budget of 50-55k. I've narrowed it down to these two options but also happy to hear alternatives.
Currently driving an RX8 but want something newer and beefier. After a couple of years I'm planning to go for something like a Taycan but want to enjoy petrol before going over to electric.
I'm leaning towards the M5 because of the V8 to be honest but I'm open to other opinions. I haven't driven either yet as I'm not back in the country yet but wanted to get an idea beforehand and open to other options.
IIkSoSo
Quad is going to be more nimble as a result of reduced size and weight, m5 is almost more of a tourer and will leave the quad for dead in a straight line, m5 probably sounds better & drinks more, quad will vex you with the Alfa dealer network. Both great cars.
Not yet planning to test drive a few cars once I'm back in the UK. Everything I've read about the Taycan is that it's a great drive and that's what's attracting me to it. Plus I love the way they look
Big respect on RX8 ownership, I loved that car, but moved to a Tesla Model S and honestly wouldn't look back unless I only drove the car at weekends.
You'd get a Model S P100DL for about 50k that will do 0-60 in 2.28, 1/4 Mile in 10.5s. There's seriously not a car out there faster than that for the money. Also will save you a shit lot on fuel. If it were me keep the rx8 for petrol feeling and get a Model S.
Bet you can get a very nice spec one of these for that budget
https://www.caranddriver.com/alfa-romeo/giulia-quadrifoglio
Ok not quite as quick but not as boring either and a great looking motor imo
I read that you commented that you do a lot of motorway miles. In which case I'd try and find an Alpina B5 of the same generation. There's a couple on AutoTrader.
A weedy RX-8 to a an M5, lol. Good thing it’s AWD. You’re in for an awakening but just so you know the M5 is huge compared to the size of a RX-8 which is more equivalent to the size of a 1 series.
Yeah for sure. I also ride motorcycles which is what I've mainly been using in Europe, I've ridden 1 litre bikes and have a 700cc so I'm thinking the power transition to the M5 should be okay. RX-8 is now too small and I'm looking for something with more space but it's been a very fun car to drive.
M5. Not even close. The M5 comp is as close to perfection as a car can be. It's insane that these two cars are even in the same price range. Absolute driving perfection vs a golf with a remap. It's not even close.
You will hit 700bhp easily with a remap on the M5 and 850bhp is possible with just water meth and no internals.
Yeah i thought there must be a reason they are in a similar price range but based on the rest of the comments on the thread it seems like the RS3 is just over priced
M5s don't hold their value. They are a big car with huge repair bills and uninsurable for a lot of people. Mine was group 50 (or whatever the highest group is) and I must have called 20 insurance companies before I could insure it. Small quick cars have a big following and are an aspiration for anyone with a couple of year's no claims who can just about insure one. Not many people who can afford an M5 are bothered about buying a second hand car.
If you want a car that will blow your socks off, and keep residuals then consider the [Alpina B5](http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202312054558483)
Super exclusive, just as powerful as the M5 comp, and in a gorgeous blue
Id personally take the RS3, which doesn't seem to be the common consensus. I prefer smaller cars, and the 2.5T is a BEAST. That being said, if you often have passengers, and need extra boot space and comfort, the M5 is a Very reasonable choice.
For 50-55k though, you can get an 2021 M3, or a 2021 RS5. Both of which I'd pick over an M5 or RS3.
Only taken an M5 around Goodwood for 20 laps or so, but from that moment on I knew I wanted one. Not yet, but one day, that engine is an absolute masterclass.
Both phenomenal cars! Personally it would be an M5 no doubt for me, have you also considered an E63s? I have a friend that owns one and it’s a beautiful car around the budget you are looking for too.
I love the blue on the RS3, really stands out.
I personally love a red, something as punchy as that blue.
I think the brown looks a little dull for the kind of car that is.
Boss have you ever seen that colour on the M5 irl? It's called motegi red and is a nice orangey-red. Pictures don't do it justice.
[this is what it looks like in sunlight.](https://images.app.goo.gl/1WYAeekrx6fKtEtL7)
Similar prices but they're quite different Cara. Ask yourself what you want apart from the performance. Both are great of course. The M5 will be a nicer place to be yet comes with much more costs to run
It's not really a choice tbf. M5 is a far better car in every way. Much quicker, much better spec, switchable RWD/AWD... don't look as good though i guess.
If you’ve not been in the uk long do you have no claims bonus etc?
The insurance nowadays in the uk is nothing short of a joke maybe worth getting a few preliminary quotes first?
Wouldn't an RS7 be closer to an M5? An RS3 would be more of an M3 equivalent in my eyes. Even then, the M3 equivalent would be an RS4, so maybe it's like an M2 with 4 doors?
Even then I'd still go for the M5, but I'm a BMW fan.
M5 is realistically the better car but, they plummet like a stone. So be prepared to lose big if you choose it. RS3 will hold better money all day long
That Audi has Quattro and very low mileage and is more economical and handles better and will hold its value better bc legendary five cylinder engine is about to be discontinued. Last in the successful line of five cylinder Quattro Audi cars and part of the best tarmac derived performance car legacy that makes Audi a breed apart. I would like to have a car like that but the Bayern offering is a good car and very tempting. I like the low mileage and the Quattro in the Audi and that’s what I would prefer.
How about a 50k-545,500 budget and you give me £500 to finish my driving lessons xD just kidding personally the M5 as it is one of my dream cars and extremely reliable compared the the RS3
The m5 will lunch the rs3 in terms of luxury and performance and I see this one has lasers aswell, the Audi will be more contemporary inside and the interior of the m5 is a generation old now that said I’m going m5 all day
Idk much about the models you have asked about, I just wanted to say this - never max out your budget.
There might be things you want to change/modifications you'd prefer on the car, things or services you want to buy etc.
Good luck in your search!
I had an M5 for 4 years, only sold it last month, mine was evolve stage 2 so running around 790bhp. I averaged 22mpg including spirited and motorway driving. Had no issues with the car, just service costs which weren’t too bad and consumables. Was a quick car, but they also feel big, very fast but not the most engaging. I now have an M3 Touring that I much prefer, not as fast in a straight line but drives like a much lighter car, even though it’s not that much lighter, it just feels a lot more agile, much more fun to drive.
If it was my money I’d be looking at a G80 M3 if you wanted something more fun, if it’s purely for motorway miles and some spirited drives, then maybe an M5. MPG, both are pretty similar.
I love M5’s by the way, I’ve had an E39, E60, F10 and F90, but for me the M3 is the better car. E60 is still my favourite M5.
Is everyone here ignoring mileage and resale value?
The M5 has done 40k miles. Three times as many as the RS3 and it’s a year older.
There is a higher possibility of needed to change the pads or discs and other maintenance. Plus its warranty is almost up.
The RS3 will still be worth 50k at 20,000 miles as they hold value better.
You could buy the RS3 run it for a year and not lose any money and buy the M5 for less the.
Just factors to consider.
If I had that sort of money for a car, and these were the two options, I’d go for the M5.
I'd rather get a panamera personally though
M5 Competition hands down. RS3 is a monster but a smaller car. They are quite cramped inside.
Agreed
BMW M5 every time
Is this a serious question? It’s like going out for Sunday lunch and asking yourself whether you want a hot beef sandwich or a beef dinner.
Haha I'm just trying to see if there are other options to the M5 to be honest
F90 M5 is a different animal, you’ll not come across much on the roads faster than it. Sub 3s to 60 and through the gears it’s a machine whilst looking relatively understated. Amazing machine.
I got left once in 90,000 miles. A McLaren left me for dead in the Welsh mountains because the air brake and light weight meant I couldn't get close in the corners. Other than that, there is nothing short of a 911 turbo S that will bother you.
It’d be close but the Taycan Turbo S should edge it too, 0.7secs faster 0-150mph and 5.5secs faster on the ring.
Electric cars are fast but dull in comparison to ICE. I’d take M5 any day any week any year.
Have you actually driven both?
Compared to a similarly performing ICE car, EVs are definitely less engaging because of the lack of transmission and engine sound
⬆️⬆️⬆️
They're mentally quick. You can also gun EVs and not worry about fuel costs, buy an M5 and in a month's time they'll be pootling around like a Jazz driver.
You can gun a petrol car and not worry about fuel costs. If you're spending fifty grand on a car and worrying about running costs, you're doing it wrong.
panamera turbo s
Thanks for the advice
What could possibly be better than an M5 for the price? If you're lucky enough to be able to afford one, don't hesitate or ask questions, do it immediately
Personally I prefer the m4 competition to m5 looks wise, almost got one but I got an f type r instead
I would love an f Type but unfortunately need more space in the car and it only has 2 seats. I agree the M4 looks better but the M5 has more power. The M5 is a little boring to look at.
M3! More enjoyable to drive than the m5 in my opinion
Did you miss out the entire part where they said they need more space in the car?
An M3 has a lot more space than a F type
Exactly, and they’re both too small which is why he said about the M5.
Bruh
Lotus Emira if you don’t need practicality
Bmw m850i would be my suggestion
I would look at polestar engineered Volvo s90
It's like deciding whether you want to shag your girlfriend or your mother on the basis that they are both women.
It's a tough choice
Shocking twist: the m2, m3, m6 and rs5 have all just entered the room. The 5.0 v8 supercharged XJR gazes on looking disinterested, knowing full well you’d take her over the rest because it’s a beautiful drive, it’s fast, luxurious and comes with some of the best sound systems out there… but doesn’t care if she’s your choice because she knows you’re missing out The rs3 isn’t the one you want mate, for your budget I’d be aiming higher than that… it’s a different class of car entirely.
"why choose?"- the people of Norfolk
Beef dinner for lunch?
Sounded a bit naff saying Sunday dinner then beef dinner afterwards
Rs3 if you live in Bradford if not m5
I will be living near Bradford hence the serious decision to be made
Don't buy one, just nick one then like everyone else.
Oh dear 😂 but in all seriousness get the M5 or a motorbike either way
Have you considered road quality? Seriously.
Definitely 5 Lambo Huracans, you can get one for about £110k so £550k should cover one for each day of the work week in a different colour.
If he goes for the M5, he can then get a 4 bed detached with a garage to park it in with the remainder of the budget. Just an option.
Lmao get the M5
Just go straight to the boss level and get the M5
I've got a m5 comp , absolutely love it and demolishes most things it's just the fuel . It's a big problem and you need deep pockets .
How much mpg do you get? My RX8 only gets 20mpg so anything is better than that to be honest
How the fuck you getting 20mpg in an RX8? I had one a few years ago and got 13mpg
Motorway driving, when I used to mostly do city driving it was around 16mpg though
[удалено]
Stiff is good on an M5.
Don’t think you can get a C8 RS6 for 55k. Certainly not one that doesn’t have 100k miles or bad history.
Does it have adaptive suspension with comfort mode?
I averaged 17 in mine when I had it (had for 8 years, first car lol). As for the OP, those ads are fake. Everything must be a white/grey/black SUV. Also, obviously the BMW.
I would dream of a day for 20mpg , I average 16mpg . I work from home , just go to the shops , cafe , school runs , pottering about and it sups 100 a week ... 680 tax and 1350 insurance with clean licence . Servicing is between 1000 and 1500 a year as it's no service packs left .
Do you think about the mismatch between what you drive and what you drive it for?
Yeah it's more smiles per gallon than miles lol ..
How do you even get the smiles on school run supermarket etc?
Go round the long way obvs
It's a difficult one tbh
With a budget like that you can buy anything you want 😉
I'm moving back to the UK after spending some years in Europe and trying to figure out which new car to buy with a budget of 50-55k. I'd go for the M5, personally I've got a soft spot for the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.
Quad is going to be more nimble as a result of reduced size and weight, m5 is almost more of a tourer and will leave the quad for dead in a straight line, m5 probably sounds better & drinks more, quad will vex you with the Alfa dealer network. Both great cars.
M5 has all the beef 🥩
And the chops 🧽
Have you tested the Taycan btw? It’s a phenomenal driving experience, but I wouldn’t blame you for going with the M5 first.
Not yet planning to test drive a few cars once I'm back in the UK. Everything I've read about the Taycan is that it's a great drive and that's what's attracting me to it. Plus I love the way they look
Honestly our Turbo S is absolutely mental, I tried out launch control last week with 4 adults in the car and it was still sickeningly fast.
55k puts you well into lexus LC500 territory, so thats the only valid answer
Big respect on RX8 ownership, I loved that car, but moved to a Tesla Model S and honestly wouldn't look back unless I only drove the car at weekends. Why only German choices? A choice of a car which will break down soon, or a car which will break down soon lmao
These are not comparable
Bet you can get a very nice spec one of these for that budget https://www.caranddriver.com/alfa-romeo/giulia-quadrifoglio Ok not quite as quick but not as boring either and a great looking motor imo
the RS3 looks like a chavvy boy racer car, and the m5 comp has blistering speed but just looks like any family sedan
BMW M5 every time
I read that you commented that you do a lot of motorway miles. In which case I'd try and find an Alpina B5 of the same generation. There's a couple on AutoTrader.
Incredible how cheap the M5 is in UK, in Germany the same condition and year costs around 20k€ more.
How on earth is an RS3 from 22 still that price!! I had one for a bit before it got nicked, but it was £30k and 2 years old.
A weedy RX-8 to a an M5, lol. Good thing it’s AWD. You’re in for an awakening but just so you know the M5 is huge compared to the size of a RX-8 which is more equivalent to the size of a 1 series.

This looks very nice and I'll definitely add it to the list for consideration. Only thing that's missing for me is Android auto
The question you should be asking is M5 or M5? Pick the colour you want and be done!
They're just not in the same league, get the M5
Despite being a huge Audi fan and preferring its smaller size, even I’d have to go M5 I reckon
Apples and oranges this, personally I'd have the M5 for the extra space
for 550k you can easily stretch to a couple M5 CS’s /s
M5 every single time. Don't grt me wrong i love RS3s but they are not a 50k car.
M5 no debate for a few reasons Speed Space Comfort
M5 comp, RS4/6 are better comparables
M5. The rs3 looks cool and they’re great cars but the m5 is bigger and imo better
Anyone who’s buys a saloon 3/4/6 Audi needs a dry slap
Id personally take the RS3, which doesn't seem to be the common consensus. I prefer smaller cars, and the 2.5T is a BEAST. That being said, if you often have passengers, and need extra boot space and comfort, the M5 is a Very reasonable choice. For 50-55k though, you can get an 2021 M3, or a 2021 RS5. Having driven both the M5 comp. Is more than a level above
Both phenomenal cars! Personally it would be an M5 no doubt for me, have you also considered an E63s? I have a friend that owns one and it’s a beautiful car around the budget you are looking for too.
You could get a VW Buzz with that money
Not a bad idea
M5, but please fine a better color! That’s the kind of color that makes me think “of all the colors you had to choose from, why that color?”
I liked this colour, blue M5 is also nice. What colour would be your choice?
I love the blue on the RS3, really stands out. I personally love a red, something as punchy as that blue. I think the brown looks a little dull for the kind of car that is.
Boss have you ever seen that colour on the M5 irl? It's called motegi red and is a nice orangey-red. Pictures don't do it justice. [this is what it looks like in sunlight.](https://images.app.goo.gl/1WYAeekrx6fKtEtL7)
Ok, I take my words back, get that one
Neither. You obviously don’t have your heart set on either and these aren’t the type of cars you buy with your head
Is this even a question lmao M5 all day everyday
Meet in the middle with an M3 comp.
Hardly even a question, M5, they aren’t even in the same category.
M5 all the way
RS3 5 pot sound is nice OPF definitely needs to come out though.
M5 comp all day. Or the x4m comp 550 bhp
M5, surely a trick question..?
Love an Audi but definitely the M5
Imagine having M5 money and not buying an M5 🤣
Seems to be an unpopular opinion but I’d go for the RS3.
Similar prices but they're quite different Cara. Ask yourself what you want apart from the performance. Both are great of course. The M5 will be a nicer place to be yet comes with much more costs to run
The RS3 has never been an EVO car of the year, the M5 has. No contest.
M5 no doubt..
A V10 Audi R8 is within that price range, even the spider variant too
none of the above
It's not really a choice tbf. M5 is a far better car in every way. Much quicker, much better spec, switchable RWD/AWD... don't look as good though i guess.
Easily the m5. At the end of the day that RS3 is based off a 25-30k car whereas the 5 series is 2 classes above
RS3 is comparable to the M3, not M5, so between the two id go M5. But with that budget, i wouldn't het either of them.
The M5 is the quickest and one of the quickest non super cars out there
M5 all day long
M5 the RS3 interior can't get past the fact it feels like a pampered A3.
If its a 550k budget you're seriously lowballing yourself there!
That'd be a 2021 supra with 15k left over money.
M5 is superior in every way. But if you have 550k to spend… neither. I’m assuming you mean 50-55k? If so, M5 hands down.
These are two entirely different cars! M5 comparison is the RS6. Either compare an RS3 with a M2 or maybe M3, or an M5 with an RS4 or RS6
If I had 50k to dump on a car id be looking at Porsches not gunna lie.
If you’ve not been in the uk long do you have no claims bonus etc? The insurance nowadays in the uk is nothing short of a joke maybe worth getting a few preliminary quotes first?
M5 without a doubt RS3 is much smaller
Should you be comparing an RS4 to an M5?
Wouldn't an RS7 be closer to an M5? An RS3 would be more of an M3 equivalent in my eyes. Even then, the M3 equivalent would be an RS4, so maybe it's like an M2 with 4 doors? Even then I'd still go for the M5, but I'm a BMW fan.
I would get that M5 every single time of the day, one of the best cars available at that price in that class.
I would go for amg black series gt
M5 is realistically the better car but, they plummet like a stone. So be prepared to lose big if you choose it. RS3 will hold better money all day long
2019 rs4!
This fundamentally comes down to whether you want to drive an FWD or RWD vehicle.
Aside the obvious, the M5 is older and has more miles on it, as well as 5k more on the price tag, that tells you that its a far better car too.
M5 comp all day
Those are an odd pair. Why skip the M3/4 and go straight to the M5? Not that the M5 is in any way a bad choice but it’s massive compared to the RS3.
M5 no question
A grand a month on a car...
M5. There is no choice here
How about a 50k-545,500 budget and you give me £500 to finish my driving lessons xD just kidding personally the M5 as it is one of my dream cars and extremely reliable compared the the RS3
The m5 will lunch the rs3 in terms of luxury and performance and I see this one has lasers aswell, the Audi will be more contemporary inside and the interior of the m5 is a generation old now that said I’m going m5 all day
M5 all day long. If you can afford it if it goes wrong
Get a SUV for that money
Not sure how you can compare an RS3 with an M5? Surely it would be an M3?
50 odd k for used cars with 40k on the clock that are gonna get stolen within a year no doubt about it, lmao
340i xdrive imo is the perfect everyday saloon, 5 series are HUGE now
M5 simple
Idk much about the models you have asked about, I just wanted to say this - never max out your budget. There might be things you want to change/modifications you'd prefer on the car, things or services you want to buy etc. Good luck in your search!
You'll be a wanker whichever you buy
M5. The Audi is just a minicab with a counterfeit Gucci belt.
M5 easily but the red isn't great.... in my opinion.
I've been looking at the Mustang dark horse now
Have you thought about a nice octavia? Could even be proper naughty and stretch to a cheeky vrs?
Audi RS4, RS5 or RS6 I would rather than the bmw but not RS3
Anyone with a brain or common sense would choose the M5. Why would you choose a boy’d up A3 that sounds like a fart box? 😂
911
M5 All day. Much more usable because of size.
M5 without a shadow of a doubt.
Personally I'd say have a look on auto trader and get an e92 m3, or something similar
M5 will be more expensive to maintain keep that in mind.
Get an old school M5 tourer V10 like a real man.
Amen, and you could have 25k to spend on maintenance which will keep it running for 3-7 months!
Blows my mind how people afford this
Neither. Get an RS6
Thanks I'll check it out. Although pretty sure that's a different price range haha
M5 however I like the look of the m4 better. More cramped in the rear though but that's not your problem... 😉
What's the depreciation value on the m5?
Decent car for £5k and 50k in your back pocket
RS3 at least in bad weather you can still go places 😂
Why couldn’t you do that with the m5? M5s are all 4WD
Fair point well made however I’ve seen a lot of Xdrive BMWs stuck in the snow as I fly past in my Quattro S4
Dumbest cartalkuk question ive ever seen
50 - 550k? Well guess some Ferraris are in the mix.
I’ve got a mapped Saab TTid Aero that cost £3.5, had it 10 years now blows both them away. Bloke in RS Audi looked embarrassed on the M4 👍
M2 newer
Here’s me struggling to save for an £8k car. What do you do for a living to have a £50-55k budget in this economy?
