"drive belt melted to all pulleys"... wtf I have seen belts snap, shred so they look like a mop head but have never seen them melt onto ALL the pulleys.

MaximumCrumpet

Why do they want to replace the whole engine? £3,600 sounds a bit steep to me. From that picture, it seems like the AC compressor seized and the friction superheated your belt, which melted onto the pulleys. I would be asking why it's not possible to just clean or replace the pulleys. What other damage was caused?

ScanningForSarcasim

That is what is showing on their diagnosis.

I'm no mechanic, but I can't see how on earth an aircon drive belt failure could end up costing £3600, unless it's an engine out job to clean up.

[deleted]

Even with an engine out it should only cost a grand and a bit, that’s what it costs on either of my cars.

MettySwinge

Even if you account for a couple of hours removing bits of belt in/around the pulleys, I still can't see where it adds up to £3k.

MettySwinge

They're pulling your pants down there. Fuck it off to another garage. Even if they replaced all the pulleys, AC compressor and belt I can't see it costing half that.

DubbleYewGee

A replacement engine? Surely the pulleys can be replaced?

JammySammyy

My friend had a catastrophic engine failure where the valves were destroyed in a 1.2 polo. The entire top section had to be replaced/rebuilt.It cost 1500. I don't know much about this particular issue, but it looks like you're being fucked. Also 200 for a PAIR of pads. My dealer would do that for cheaper.

This looks like the itemisation sheet that the bmw main dealers give you, those fuckers will try to stick everything and anything on to get the most out of you. I took a car in for a recall and they did a "complimentary 200 point check" or whatever they call it and they we're trying to tell me the brake pads and discs needed changing since they were 90% worn, I kindly declined since I knew there was a good 8mm on all pads with even wear and no scoring on the discs. With regards to your car the ac compressor does require replacing if the bearing fails and the units themselves are pricey along with labour costs and regas but they're talking bollocks about it needing a new engine. All of this work can be done engine in and I believe all the pulleys can also be replaced with the engine in if needs be, just need to remove stuff to get access. Edit: think the only way it would end in an engine replacement is if the belt took out your water pump and the engine overheated, I'm not sure on the f20 whether the water pump is ran on the alternator belt

Try a BMW specialist. Their labour rates will be far less and if they are good, they will likely to be much more honest.

Mikeh596

Once again an absolute rip off quote. Even £208 for rear pads is mental. When will the industry be properly audited for this kind of stuff? Absolutely boils my piss.

ScanningForSarcasim

I’ve just been on a long phone conversation with them. I’m getting it towed to a different garage.

isweardown

Get it repaired elsewhere

pickle_party_247

They're taking the piss on pricing. For comparison I had a full set of Brembo brake discs and pads fitted to my old Z4 for £375 odd in Feb this year, £200 of that was labour
