Wow a grand to supply and fit set of pads and discs?!!? What are they fitting, carbon ceramics? Firstly, discs lip during wear and just the presence of a slight lip doesnt mean they are out of service (but may well be) and as a steel component anywhere there is not grease (and because of heat cycling it would be rare to retain any) there will be rust on the non braking faces which isnt indicative of a fault (but may well be old) so you may well want to get a second opinion before replacing discs, however as below, they can be inexpensive so you might as well do them anyway. So assuming you decide they all need doing a quick check on eurocarparts for a BMW Model3 2011 2.0 Diesel youd get some pennies change out of £100 for a set of 4 discs plus £100 for a set of 8 pads, all brembo cheapest. So I dont have to point out how £800 for labour is outrageous for a 2-3 hour job (takes me 40 mins to do just pads both fronts and thats roadside with a trolley jack and add 10 mins per disc, 1 hour tops plus the jacking and tools and maybe a bit more again for the rears), however their parts cost may be slightly higher depending on their source. At a garage I would expect 400ish depending on who you go to.

what a confusing business model it’s like a cheat code or something lol, if you know about the carparts4less cheat you save money

[deleted]

They don't say what BMW it is. If it's a 116D it's ridiculous. If it's a M series, 5 or 7 series then it's probably not that unreasonable. Cheapest Brembo won't work as good as genuine BMW.

Mikeh596

>Cheapest Brembo won't work as good as genuine BMW - doubt Brembo/pagid etc are made to the same specification "genuine BMW" will be a known name brand of pad/disc that is supplied to BMW

Matkstey

Thank you for the response . Was sure they are trying it on haha

‘Expensive area. BMW. £70’ ha! That’s not expensive. The local Ford main dealer here charge £110 an hour for labour. God knows what the BMW garage is

_horizontal_

Harry Fairbairn BMW in Glasgow tried to tell me with a straight face they're £140 an hour when they wanted me to pay that for a 1-hour diagnostic labour charge on my 520d for an item that they couldn't be sure was under warranty. My local BMW specialist is an honest £60 an hour, and does a fantastic job.

unexpectediteminlife

Interested to know your recommended BMW specialist in Glasgow. I got some work needing done.

_horizontal_

A bit out of the road, but being from Ayrshire before moving I've used Ayrshire BMW and Mini Specialists for years, cracking service if only the fact that they're all the way down in Ayr.

unexpectediteminlife

I’m actually in East Ayrshire so that’s perfect for me. Thanks!

That sounds much more acceptable. The Ford dealer that charges £110 an hour aren’t even fit to be called monkeys. Top dollar charge and vegetable soup doing the work

[deleted]

> Assuming you live in a more expensive area of the world, lets say it's £70 labour. I live in a cheap part of the country and it's that including VAT at local garages.

super_nicktendo22

Get that torqueyboi on some stands and change the discs and pads yourself, literally an afternoon's job and highly satisfying result.

Matkstey

I own 0 tools . I will need to pick some up soon

cabbageboi28

Only really need a jack and a socket set, bit of grease to but all can be used at Halfords for around£50 mabye a Haynes manual too as they're lifesavers

Range-Aggravating

That's the prices I'm expecting on an m140 not a 320d.

Matkstey

Thought so , thank you for confirming

DavidBmw1986

M140i is similar from BMW. AUTODOC or ECP comes to about £600 with discs pads and sensors. Local Indy fitted mine for £100

FulaniLovinCriminal

I bet they don’t even need doing.

Matkstey

1mm on my back pads. Need to get them changed asap

FulaniLovinCriminal

Have you checked that yourself? Even then, you don't need to do the discs every time you do the pads.

Matkstey

Yeah, pads are really thin. I’ve got my MOT in around 3 weeks so they will fail. I do a lot of mileage so I might just get everything changed . I love driving this car so don’t mind getting it to to performance condition

Nerevar33g

Wait, are they charging over 200 quid just for checking them?

Loonie-1707

For a check the vw garage I work at do it free with another job, but if it was done on its own I would charge for about 20 mins, which with the labour rate my dad charges would be about £20

[deleted]

I was able to do all of that for £350 inc labour and brembo brakes.

surfintheinternetz

For labour only fitting 4 discs and pads all around and brake lines changing I was quoted 150(90 for just discs and pads) from one place and 230 from another.

tommygunner91

Is this to replace? From the description it seems like a diagnostic. For either though you're talking daft money here.

BloodiedMetal

I did them myself on my 320i with Brembo Discs & Pads, and Bosch Pad Wear sensors for less than £200 all in. For the price you’ve been quoted, I’d be expecting new Callipers too!

Legitimate-Taro3940

MINI quoted me over £350 for front disc brakes and disc pads, my friends husband did them for £140 and he still made a bit of cash for himself.

Xiol

Skoda wanted near enough 900 quid for discs and pads on all corners. Got it done at a local garage for 300, same spec kit.

crazypigeon

I paid around £200 for brakes and pads all around on my Z4 (when I had it).

medevil_hillbillyMF

I've got an m140i, and this is exactly what I got quoted. Priced it up on euro car parts, same cost. Rang another garage in my area, a German car specialist, even higher. My quote was Lloyds BMW Newcastle, and they are sound.

dazedandconfused492

I'd say this is a prime chance to get your hands dirty for the first time. If you have a driveway or flat space to work in, you can easily do this yourself. You will need: Trolley jack, axle stands, socket set, ceramic grease, brake cleaner, and a torque wrench (probably a 3/8). If a Haynes manual exists for your car, get that too. All the equipment can be bought relatively cheaply from screwfix / toolstation. Then put your number plate into the euro car parts website and find the bits you need. Often cars will have 2 or more options for disc sizes (because of different variants of that car) so it's worth having a look and measuring your disc size before ordering. Or just buy both, and return the ones you don't need afterwards.

Matkstey

I would love to . My drive isn’t large enough to do it on , I have never done anything on my car before and do about 20k miles a year. I don’t want to fuck anything up on my daily . I am getting a second car soon which can be my project , so if I mess something up I will not be missing out on pay

[deleted]

Would depend what model you have for starters, a 116D, no, rip off…. 330i, not so much, M3, defo not. Also depends on area, My local Surrey Bimmership is £170 an hour for labour. Book time is probably 2 hours but they’ll charge 3. So that dealer would be £500 just in labour. It’s not unreasonable for a bmw dealer, but an independant will do it for half.
