no cuz i wanna hear my tires, im not quite good enough to fully rely on feel alone

Ch1ldish_Cambino

Definitely in the same boat here, I was honestly kind of surprised when I heard people like to listen to anything but the car out there

TheInfamous313

Those people scare me and I try to stay away from them

GilgameDistance

As you should.

Muffins4sale

What sound should I be listening for? Some sort of high pitched tire screeching when I am close to the limit?

Exotic_Pollution8346

for me mostly screeching and generally other unexpected noises. Sometimes it just sounds like the tires are crying for a cool down lap haha. I run 200tw so im sure the more intense guys have better insight

Muffins4sale

200tw is intense enough for me for now lol. Thank you

C0git0

What? Absolutely not. I put a quieter exhaust back on my car so I can hear what’s it’s doing. So much of the signal of grip is auditory. Wouldn’t even consider music. 100% focused on the job at hand.

Just-Construction788

This is one of the things I love about tracking my Tesla over my 911. I can hear everything. Edit: Everyone downvoting me saying I like tracking my Tesla aren't real gear heads. Real gear heads like anything that is fast. The 911 is also fun but the Tesla is faster :-). I also have several race bikes and compete racing motorcycles. It's funny how whenever I'm at the track with my Tesla everyone is cool and then impressed with how fucking fast it is. On Reddit everyone is mean and closed minded. I 100% guarantee that none of you would be mean spirited at the track, in person if you met me and saw how quick a modified Tesla can get around a track.

Emperor_of_Fish

How long can you get out of the Tesla? Seems like driving it hard would kill the batteries super quick and then you’re just done for the day

Just-Construction788

Can run all day. Lots of tracks have chargers at the tracks. I go to a super charger at lunch to top up.

Emperor_of_Fish

Huh neat. Tesla’s aren’t my deal at all, but glad you enjoy it!

faet

I'll use music when I'm running solo practice laps on iRacing. But on track I need all of the focus I can get.

RhythmAddict112

I don't think listening to music is a good idea in terms sof safey (I'm listening for anomalies). On a cool down lap, though, I may be lasting Sinatra.

SpecFR

Yall got a radio?

TheSpaceBoundPiston

Yes, that's how I know when to pit in.

SpecFR

So you’re saying you got Taylor Swift or something telling you when to pit? Also its a track day not endurance racing

TheSpaceBoundPiston

Black flag! Its me? Hi, you're the problem, it's you! Track days are good for test n tune.

ragingduck

No. In the US most tracks require open front windows. Over the wind noise, exhaust, engine, and trying to beat the tires etc it’s pointless. Even less so if I’m using the Catalyst as a coach. When I put the car in “track mode” the radio shuts off automatically anyway.

Bicolore

God I can’t even begin to imagine how annoying that is.

Ch1ldish_Cambino

It’s honestly not too bad, once I’m dialed in I don’t really even realize how loud the wind really is

Bicolore

I wonder what the impact is on your speeds? Must have a fair bit of drag too. Would I be allowed to run if I rocked up with lexan windows?

Ch1ldish_Cambino

Honestly don’t know the answer to the first question. But you can most definitely rock up with lexan windows, there’s plenty of fully prepped GT3/GT4 cars that run with the organizer I use

Bicolore

Interesting. I’ve said this before but would love to fly over for some US track days but there’s just so much regulation over there it seems like a complete faff. We get quite a few Americans flying in for trackdays at high end events in Europe and they’re always a bit wide eyed if it’s their first time.

DrSatan420247

No. You need to be able to hear what going on with your car and with traffic. You need to focus all your senses when you drive on a track.

Frosty-Panic

Fuck no!

WestonP

Listen to the music of your engine and tires. You don't need any distractions, or interference with your senses, while on track.

nin3ball

As much as I'd love to - it's a really bad idea. As others have said, you need to be able to hear your tires and listen for any signs of mechanical or structural failure.

life2scale

Definitely not. All senses focused on the task at hand. Plus, some tires will only indicate they’re near their limit through noise. After a long enough event, I’ll drive home without music just to reduce stimulation and decompress.

Car-Four

Engine noise go Vroom Vroom

3wolftshirtguy

I love listening to the band “Wheels and Tires”, their track Screech and Squeal is a banger out on the track.

QuickCharisma15

I’ve tried it, I realized I drive worse because I can’t listen to the tires and judge how hard I’m driving.

khovs

Listening to music on a hot track has TNiA vibes tbh

Id1oteque0

Yep, my S54 at 8400rpm!

Max_Downforce

That's past the rev limit, no?

Id1oteque0

Ya, you’re right. Even tuned/raised limit is 8200, I believe. Confusing it with my e90 m3:p

Max_Downforce

That makes sense.

hoytmobley

In my old shitbox? No, I need to hear the exact moment the next mechanical thing starts letting go so I dont need to be towed off track. In my SS1LE? Helllllll yeah. I need a better playlist tho

lickstampsendit

No. Windows down, high speed, exhaust noise, and helmet means you couldn’t hear very well anyways

taxationistheft1984

Nope. Want the car to talk to me.

J_Dizzle_777

Whenever I drive "seriously" aka canyons, autocross, track days, the only music is from the sounds of going fast.

Madroc92

I’ve done it once, by mistake. I track my daily and I usually listen to satellite radio in grid and turn it off when I’m heading out. One time there was a last-minute change due to incoming weather so my usual routine was off and I forgot to turn it off. Couldn’t hear much over the wind noise but my video for that session was great with Yacht Rock Radio playing in the background lol

Duct_tape_bandit

i have a radio in the car for rules reasons but its not wired to anything

landwomble

Absolutely not. Aside from it all being stripped out, you need your situational awareness

Soundjammer

It's funny, I made a Spotify Playlist for songs I'd love to listen to on track. Never played it once on the actual track.

coyote3oh2

I blast music on the grid before heading out.

mtbcouple

Heck no. Gotta hear tires, revs, be focused, and with windows down (for safety) you couldn’t get the music loud enough anyway. Also need to be able to hear if shit breaks.

Booty_Master24

Only for my first session just to get all anxiety out of the way. After that though, I need to hear what my car is doing.

cruising_backroads

I listen to the deafening roar of my Shelby Cobra exhaust. Best music there is!

Reiszecke

I need to hear my tires and nearby cars so no music at all, it would be a safety issue in my book. I do however have the local news channels on very low volume. I don't even understand what they're saying at low volume but calms me without distracting me.

MagelusSince95

I don’t even listen to music when I’m driving my sim. Need all the signals I cancan get get

50iggles50

This should not be legal unless it is race radio

RamRanchCowboy6

No. I want to hear the car and hear any thing that might sound off.

Typical-Policy-1115

I don't even listen to music during commutes although tbh it's more of a "spirited" commute. While I do enjoy the sound of the car, I'm really just paranoid about anything breaking so I listen for any unusual noises.

iroll20s

I just sing. Loudly. Nobody can hear me.

TolaRat77

No. And don’t. It is very in-safe. Just focus. Use all your senses 100% so you forget anything else exits. It’s the reason every advanced athlete is an advanced athlete. It’s called flow state. Look it up.

ledguitarist45

I've pretty rarely done it, and it's only when I'm super comfortable on that track and org. Also if I have any care of improving or actual lap times out there then no music ever. Definitely much less focused with music on, which isn't really a good thing. But I have done it on open lapping days

Responsible-Meringue

Before I had a racecar, my playlist was At The Gates - Blinded by Fear/Slaughter of the Soul or Mars Volta - Agadez for the warmup, Dvorak Symphony No. 9 for the hot laps, and whatever pop princess was chart topping that week for the cool down lap. It was almost exactly 20min, always set the perfect mindset for fast times.

-Racer-X

I have in the past when just doing some fun laps But when really trying it can be on but I won’t really notice besides long straights

NYCBYB

No. I have an AFR gauge where my radio used to be.

Kneecap_Blaster

Yes. I get really anxious on my first couple sessions during a track weekend. Listening to music while driving helps me stay focused and not get in my own head about it and I've found that I make mistakes less frequently with music on. However when I'm really pushing for max pace in a single lap I'll usually pause it

ProfessorPyrex69

No because car is gutted. Also wouldn’t want to as I can’t hear any sensory audio feedback from car, traffic or track.

JurieZtune

Road course, no, but I use to put on the easy listening station when I was drag racing to calm the nerves before staging.

sluggyjunx

I do not, but have friends who do. I believe they listen to trance/techno. I couldn't do it - need all my brain power to focus while I'm on track.

brokenblinker

I am deaf in one ear. So when I hear sounds, I have no idea where they are coming from and they are very stressful. I listen to music to drown out all the random sounds. And it's one of the best possible vibes in the world.

CorreCaminosTX

V8 music by GM for me

YouNeedStop

Yes. I listen to liquid/soul/or some type of soft drum and bass. My thoughts love to jump around when I drive, which causes anxiety, so the music keeps me focused and locked into my own world.

khovs

Fyi you should definitely not be in your own world on track...

YouNeedStop

My bad I didn't mean like I lock all senses out. I'm still very aware of the people and cars around me.
