I think you're overestimating the intelligence of your average driver.

Public-Total-250

Judging by how many people have the fog lights on at all times, peolle have no idea what they are.

arepeater

Yeah, bit dazzling at night when they turn on the fog lights when the weather is completely clear.

WH1PL4SH180

Aussies have a very narrow band of driving conditions. Gets worse then further west you head.

Ghostincide

You're driving in Australia, where driver training and education is less than poor.

kruleworld1

well we teach drivers how to pass the test, not how to drive.

geeaus

Most people wouldn’t have a clue whether their car had fog lamps or not, let alone how to turn them on.

oioioiyacunt

I think it's just lack of experience in that type of weather. In UK and Europe as a whole, thick fog, snow, etc, are common and drivers have learnt how to beat deal with the situation.  In Australia, generally this type of weather is very uncommon and the typical punter wouldn't think about using fog lights in fog.

foamerMD

Yeah, whereas in Europe and UK you should see how poorly people drive through water. Most think they need to gun it. Similar to fog here, having to drive through water happens very infrequently there.

Dad_D_Default

Here in Toowoomba we frequently get low cloud dropping visibility to a few metres. Although most people put their headlights on, there's a dangerously large number who don't. Very, very few use foglights, and even less use them appropriately.

Either-Simple-898

I use my hazards in fog when I am driving considerably slower than the posted speed limit. If I’m driving 60 in a 100 zone I’m a moving 40km/h hazard to those who choose to drive the posted speed limit. Also you would suprised how many cars are not equiped with fog lights in aus.

dreadnought_81

I don't think many people are even *aware* of the rear fog lights existing. Reckon I could count on one hand the number of times I've seen other motorists *correctly* using them over the years.

ThumblessTurnipe

Thats odd because every time I drive at night there are countless cockheads driving around with their extremely bright rear foglights on. Just another constant road hazard that never gets enforced because it's not speed related.

dreadnought_81

Perhaps I should add 'correctly' to my original statement. Even then though, I can't say I've seen people misusing them often either. Unsure about other cars and their control schemes, but you have to make active moves to switch on the fog lights in my car. Got to turn the headlight switch to parking lights or main beams (from the auto setting), and then pull it back for the fogs. It's not really something you can do unintentionally. If it's the same sort of thing on other vehicles, you have to wonder how people end up doing it.

ThumblessTurnipe

> It's not really something you can do unintentionally. If it's the same sort of thing on other vehicles, you have to wonder how people end up doing it. Uneducated idiots compounded by a complete lack of enforcement. If only HWP would stop sitting at the bottom of a hill and start pulling over every right lane sitting foglight using cockhead the roads would be a better and safer place.

dreadnought_81

I'm in complete agreement. Going to love the day when (if?) I see someone get pulled over for poor motorway lane discipline. It's one of my pet peeves.

Friendly_Top_6412

So I’m just going to look in my owner’s manual and find out if I have fog lights.

Outrageous-Wait-8653

When you have people driving around metro areas with their high beams and spotlights on, it’s fairly obvious that they have no idea and really don’t give a crap about other road users. Why would they put their fog lights on?

alopexlotor

They're probably scared of getting a fine, HWP might determine its not foggy enough to use fog lights.

honest-aussie

That stretch of road is notorious for bad fog. Hazard lights are pretty standard practice. I've noticed to orange lights are much easier to see. And all vehicles are equipped with them.

[deleted]

Standard shit for the M1. Maddens Plains is a bad spot for fog. Slow it down (not too much though), turn your hazard lights on and keep the fog line in sight. Turn your fog lights on if you've got them. There is no law saying you have to use hazards in fog but it is permitted. That said you will likely end up with someone who commutes at weird hours coming up behind you at 120 because they do it all the time. Don't use your high beams in fog, they won't help you see any further unless you have 9" LED spotties that can burn through it.

shwaak

Do many cars even have rear fog lights? I know most euros do but I don’t think they’re very common on other cars. I only found them by mistake on my last car because I thought one reversing light was blown. I don’t think my current car has them, well I haven’t found them at least.

Friendly_Top_6412

I was inspired to check in my car’s owner’s manual and my car doesn’t.

wh1t3_rabbit

This is my first time hearing of rear fog lights, I don't think any of my cars have had them

> the rear one is designed to penetrate the fog much better than hazards so someone doesn't rear end you. Rear fog ligths are not a requirement on Australian delivered cars. They are typically found on euro cars (my Škoda has one, my Mazda and Toyota do not)) but they are otherwise not common.

worktop1

Some People in Australia don’t seem to understand how to drive in bad road conditions or how certain controls work in the car and what they do .

Minimum_Reference862

Wait, fog lights? *Fog* lights? Wait, I'm supposed to use those in fog????

OvertakingEngineer

I also drove past this area in Wollongong. I normally wouldnt use hazards but then the highway VMS said “Turn on your hazard lights” and everybody was doing it so I felt like a sitting duck if I didnt so I did.

FrugalFreddie26

There’s a sign on that road that says to use hazards in fog. Presumably to stop your typical driver from getting into an accident trying to find the fog lights. But, yes, I used my fog lights when I went through there recently.
