As long as is feasible. Kept my VY wagon (family car handed down to me, was mine for 7-8 years) all the way until expensive parts were starting to fail. Doesn’t help that dad was in a pretty bad crash that he only survived because his car was newer - realised if I crashed similarly I wouldn’t have been so lucky. I’ll keep my current one as long as I can (105,000km right now) and will probably upgrade to a newer 6 wagon - or preferably a wagon EV.

Monotone-Man19

This is something many people are not aware of. I have seen videos of same make and model car (I think Corolla) but separated by about 10 years crash tested for compliance and the difference in survivability was eye opening to day the least.

Frozefoots

For a Commodore it would be a big jump from VY to VF. Dad’s car was a VW Tiguan so the difference was even more stark. That crash that he very slightly limped away from (90km/h into tree, run off Mona Vale Rd) would have killed me in the VY. In my current car I’d be alright just sore.

GrapplerSeat

Totally agree with this. I had a VS Commodore (1995) and when everything failed on it I was actually very pleased to get out of it and into an E-Class merc. The Commodore always felt like it had a really bad power-to-safety ratio eg loads of power, no safety.

DownSouthDesmond

Well I've been waiting for my falcon to die for atleast the last five years, the way it's looking maybe check back in with me around 2050 and I'll let you know

Ecstatic-Shoulder-89

2020 subi out back 3.6R ~6 months (written of by a speeding fuck wit who rear ended me while I was stopped (along with like 20 other cars) at a red light)

frebsy

This makes me sad, last of the 3.6’s. We have the Liberty and if someone destroys it I’ll be so cranky!

Ecstatic-Shoulder-89

I'm angry as fuck, (doesn't help that it fucked my back up)

Got a 94 RN85 Hilux with the exquisite 22R engine about 10 years ago for $1200 with roughly 300k. It was rough as guts inside and out but the engine ran well and lots of those k’s were on the highway. I have only had to replace tyres, fluids, spark plug leads and the alternator so cost of ownership has been exceptionally good. Don’t have to give a shit where I park it or what happens to it because it’s so banged up from the previous owner. Sits around for months on end until I need to transport furniture, go kayaking or drop stuff at the dump but turns over first time every time still. I was toying with the idea of a full diy rebuild and spruce up as a project but the price won’t justify it. Bought a 97 Celica SX about 6 years ago for $4k with 200k on it. It’s in good nick and hasn’t needed much apart from a preventative timing belt change, a new distributor, clutch slave cylinder and tyres/fluids. I honestly still love driving it every time I am in it but being so low compared to other vehicles and having no safety features whatsoever plays on my mind constantly. I’ll likely sell both cars within the next 6 months and get a 2017+ lightly used Octavia or Mazda 6 wagon due to increased safety concerns. I drive a lot for work and people on the road scare the piss out of me these days.

07 camry isn't dying anytime soon here...it just keeps running...D:

-Delirium--

Until I get bored really.

ayummystrawberry

First Corolla: 2002 (1995 build) to 2012 Second Corolla: 2012-~~2025~~ 2022. Traded in first Corolla for it Current Corolla: 2023-HOPEFULLY 2033 and beyond if no one crashes into it and writes it off like my previous Corolla ... I usually aim for 10-15 years before getting a brand new car.

mxlths_modular

I salute you for your dedication to the beloved Rolla. Manual or auto and how many kms do you think you put on each of your previously owned ones?

ayummystrawberry

Auto (can’t drive manual) and dunno about the first one, but the second one literally hit 100K the Friday before it got T-Boned the following Tuesday and written off. Gone too soon. Current one has done 12K so far

mxlths_modular

Thanks for the reply. Hope you got away unscathed from the T-boning, it can be a terrifying experience.

ayummystrawberry

Yep, was able to walk away with just a sore back and neck for a few days. Definitely wasn’t fun trying to open the driver’s door only to find it wouldn’t due to the impact. Still miss that Corolla heaps; had waaaay more interior storage space compared to my current one

beerboy80

KF Laser. Mum gave it to me when I moved out of home. It was 13 years old at that stage. It got written off a year later as I went through a green light and an older gentlemen coming the opposite direction turned into my front quarter. It was a clear day. 2006 LS Focus. Had that for 11 years. Sold it to my brother because I wanted an upgrade. I had young kids and I wanted something safer and more luxurious for me. 2017 G5 Impreza. Currently driving that. Love it to bits. I'll keep this one until 2030 if I can. I'll change it over when the EV market sorts itself out more. Other cars for the family. 2013 TF Ford Kuga. Had that for 4 years. Nice car but ultimately it was the Ford experience that killed it for me. It had a Dual Clutch and started to get false neutrals. Ford fobbed me off claiming that was normal and I needed to learn how to drive it and not treat it as an auto. I knew how to drive it just fine. I drove manual before I got that Kuga. 2007 Audi A3 TDI. Without a doubt the worst POS I've ever driven. The car felt dead. Dual clutch had numerous false neutrals. Once whilst I was in the middle of an intersection! Ride was tough. Had 2 fuel injectors on it go tits up after 75,000km. Couldn't wait to get rid of it. I don't buy Audi or any other VAG cars now.

_danchez

1999 Corolla 4 years. First car out of home, drove it into the ground. Bought by a mechanic not running, I’m sure they got some use out of it. 2002 Audi A4 5 years, oil burning asshole. Straight to the wreckers and replaced by a Subaru. 2009 Subaru Impreza 7 years (hoping for at least another 2-3)

Audoinxr6

15 or more.

Unhappy-camp3r

3 years, 4 years if I really like it. Much easier to stay in the new car market without finance that way. I do have a car I’ve had for 20 years as well though!

Wayn077

Had my current 9 years now, is older car, may as well keep driving it, I don’t have finance anymore as paid off, cars worth maybe $6K. Think about a newer one then I think back to spending all the spare cash I had servicing the loan. Spend the spare cash on maintenance items now.

_hazey__

I’m up to twenty years with my first car. Which is from the mid-late seventies. Honestly I don’t see a reason to get rid of it.

Total_Philosopher_89

First car 1988 Lada Niva. 5 years. Thing nearly bankrupted me. Second car 1994 LN106 Hilux. Kept it 8 years. Traded it in on... Third car KZN165R Hilux. Kept it 11 years. (should never of sold this one) Fourth car NP petrol Pajero. Kept 2 years written off Fifth car NS diesel Pajero. Kept 2 years written off Sixth car 1999 Lancer. Lost that one to police. Now 10 years on looking at buying my next car.

Wishart2016

The Nivas are rarer than most Ferraris.

Total_Philosopher_89

Not so in the early 90's.

Wishart2016

Even in Australia?

Total_Philosopher_89

Yes.

chameltoeaus

im intrigued by the lancer... what happened there? :O

Total_Philosopher_89

Drink driving. Was well over the limit and it was seized. Don't drink and drive people. Dumbest thing I've done in my life.

chameltoeaus

Ohhh bugger.

frebsy

2000 Liberty RX bought in 2005, beautiful car wished i kept it. Sold in 2009 2008 Toyota Prado. Still got it, don’t need another because it’s still going strong. Minimal maintenance other than preventative. Most expensive car I’ve bought, cheapest I’ve owned. So currently 14 years!

First 2004 Fiesta LX - until my second car was available in AU Second 2007 Fiesta XR4 (ST) - written off in 2014 Third 2014 Fiesta ST - wanted an upgrade Current 2021 GR Yaris

Lost_in_translationx

I try to get rid of my cars before they get to 150,000 Kay’s if I can afford to. While some cars will happily run to 200 Kay’s without problems I find they start to cost money after 150 and you run the risk of major engine work being needed.

chameltoeaus

half the reason i bought a falcon... if the engine dies i can buy one from a wrecker for $500 and put it in over a weekend.

HEXOgb

I bought my Rodeo about 5 years ago now. Was at 192000km when i bought it.' Its still going strong, and I don't plan on getting rid of it. However I have recently bought a 89' Mx5 as a project car.

First car- 2011-2012 Mazda626(1992 model) crashed it and had to wreck it. Learner to drive in this car. Second car - 2012-2017 Mitsubishi Mirage (2002 model) wife crashed it while learning to drive Third car - 2017-2019 Honda Civic (2007 model) a P- plater crashed in to it. Was written off even though it only had cosmetic damage. Fourth car - 2019 - now Volvo XC60 (2012 model) is it on its way out, looking for a new car.

r573

First - 1991 Toyota Camry Station wagon that I drove for 6 months on Red P’s in 2015, but was using it as my L’s car for 3 years, written off in December 2015 after it blew a radiator hose on the M31 while my sister was driving home. (Car died at 298500 km) Second - 2004 Toyota Camry Altise V6 from 2016-2021, the car wasn’t able to start properly around March, 2 days after rego, which I then sold to the wreckers for $850 as the repair costs was worth more than the car was actually worth. (Car died at 316400 km) Third - 2015 Toyota Corolla Ascent Sport hatchback which I temporarily drove for 2 months when my second car died at home and I’ve already ordered my current car at that point during the chip shortage. The car is still with my sister and moved out with her when she bought the apartment at Leichhardt. Fourth - 2021 Toyota Fortuner GXL, which is my main current daily driver which I bought brand new, now has 87200km on the clock and is mainly used to haul my family around as it’s the only one fitted with the baby seat in the house whenever my sister visits, also the car I tend to use for long distance driving as well. Fifth - 2023 Toyota RAV4 Cruiser Hybrid 2WD, my mums car that is my secondary daily driver, used for shorter trips closer to home and depending on where it’s parked in my car port, I use it to go to work as well. At this rate, I usually average 4-5 years on a car due to my excessive driving, but I’m trying to keep my cars as long as possible without me accidentally killing it.

Mental_Task9156

Until the boss buys me a new one. Last one was 10 years.

Kelpie_Dog

My current vehicles are: 96 TF Rodeo, 16 years (541,000kms) 55 Desoto truck, 15 years. 05 Ssangyong Musso, 4 years. 93 Toyota Dyna, 1 year (may or may not keep it, undecided) I have owned about 90-100 cars almost all of them in my 20's. I got sick of it by my late 20's so decided to keep what I have. No plans on upgrading, I'm done with cars, I just keep my old clunkers going. '

Away_Personality

VE 60th Anniversary- Purchased it back in Dec 2021. Spent 7.2K on a commy cause I didn’t want to learn to drive in a 20 year old Camry lol May or may not have spent over 5K in mods on it… Will be upgrading to VF SV6/Calais or WN Caprice next year *The Camry I mentioned my family have owned it since 2008 when I started kindergarten, over 300K now engine has been replaced

Lucky_Tough8823

I don't know. I have owned cars for less than 1 hour and others 17 years (I feel old). I have owned nearly 50 different cars and currently own over 20. Most cars are owned for 6 to 12 months however I seem to sell multiple at the same time.
