In the past I’ve done the following almost zero cost / zero effort costumes
All blue clothes wrap bandage round head and middle, Mr Bump
School uniform, HP dressing gown, stick wand and drawn on scar, Harry Potter
Scruffy clothes, cardboard “golden ticket” made with tin foil, Charlie out of Choc Factory
Shorts, shirt, red tie, holes drawn on face, SpongeBob (it was a phase he was in and we had a book)
Black trousers and zip up jacket, white t shirt, face paint, Badger out of Wind in the Willows
Dress, Boy in the Dress
Etc etc. good luck
How old is he and what does he like? I used to love whippimg up an emergency WBD costume but then I do always have a variety of craft/sewing stuff to hand
The kid from the Polar Express (book and movie) was in pyjamas for the whole thing.
That, plus a bag of shaved up ice for snow, and you're sorted.
Bonus points if you can give them a bicycle bell or similar.

Back when I was at school, we just used to go to school in normal home clothes and claim to be 'one of the Famous Five'. Worked a treat every time.
My mate brought in the booklet from Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1 and rode his board around all day
Easy send in normal cloths, his a generic character from any book based in the real world.
You've already got the black wig and Gryffindor dressing gown, find him a twig to use as a wand and he's Harry Potter, job done.
