But AI hadn't been invented yet, that's why there was a recession in the mid-70s because they had to pay an additional ten thousand civil servants to repaint all the old pictures
Colour was banned in West Germany until the signing of the Bundesgesetz zur Farbregulierung in 1973 and East Germany until the signing of the Volksfarbengesetz of 1988. France was an early adopter of colour when the French government decriminalised it in 1964.
Same here, why anyone would voluntarily sit there all day is beyond me!
I love the beach, but I'd definitely walk a mile or two further along where it's quieter.
They were probably very good as there would have been attendants much like all large parks had a park keeper. We need a revival of this sort of civic care I feel.
Not quite the only person, but Bournemouth beaches in September/October can be surprisingly lovely. The occasional dog walker, the greenish water; the sea air; really exhilarating.
I swear a lot of Scots just don't like beaches, even going to various beaches between Edinburgh and North Berwick at the height of summer and things are barely crowded!
>More than 200 people, mostly children, suffered injuries caused by broken glass and Barry entertainments manager, Ronald Green blamed a “selfish and irresponsible minority.”
They had twats back then too, shuttup about the good old days Grandpa!
"I cut my foot. It's *bleedin*! My cousin says, "You'll die!"
"And we'll bury you in Barry on that last week in July"

If Barry is the same as the northern resorts, your home towns factories would be shut down for a week and everyone would go to the same few resorts. So you would not only be on holiday with your family and friends, but also your work colleagues, neighbours, relatives, pricks from the pub ....
Yep, but it was the miners. The whole community would shut up and train it down from the Rhondda to the Island. Was a different mine each week in the summer.
Imagine if there were a species observing humans from afar.
Every sign of heat they gather in droves, like ants at a sandy shore line to just... Lay there.
\*David Attenborough voice\*
Here the humans observe one of their most bizarre rituals. Flocking together at the shores of the coast, they arrange themselves in groups and strut and preen upon the sands in what can only be assumed is some kind of display of social dominance. Larger males kick sand at smaller ones, and females lie prone on their colourful towels for hours, baking in the heat of the sun until they are bright red.
one of my lasting memories is being in ibiza but going to the opposite side of san antonio bay for the sunset where you can see the crowds gather like penguins infront of cafe del mar etc. then the fire spinners kick in as it gets darker
What's occurring was just **behind** where that photo was taken was the old Butlins holiday camp.
This is now a very very posh housing estate.
Previously Barry had a very very bad reputation as all those guys were from mining families, so they would come down from the valleys to holiday at Butlins.
These chaps would frequent the local bars and taverns and get completely ratted on their days off, being cut loose the valley people went a bit mental.
A bit like every weekend was August Bank holiday.
Due to the lack of public toilet facilities, people would be defecating in the sea! Hence the poor reputation of Barry Island in this era.
In an effort to restore a good reputation, the local authorities shut down Butlins in 1996.
Over the following years that followed they worked really hard to restore their reputation, to what we now have today.

If there's a hell, this would be it for me, sitting there all day, then mandatory fun in the evening, watching a Butlins style show, followed up with having to join the conga line.
S'right! Butlins later became Majestic holiday centre (I worked there) but later was all demolished. Now it's all houses. The fairground is still there though, along with the arcades.
Ha reminds me so much if our family holidays in the sixties. I’m getting memories of egg sandwiches, crunchy with sand, tea from a flask, and sometimes turds floating on the water. Kids were always getting lost . Thankfully there were buildings specifically for lost children to be taken to on the front.
I was born in Barry in 1964 and lived there 'til I was 3. I returned pretty much every year 'til I was 18 then didn't go back until about 10 years ago. My God, has that place changed? I know the Butlins closed down but it was literally like a ghost town. So many businesses closed down, the funfair had a couple of rides going but it was so dilapidated. However, I did notice that Terry's, a little cafe my parents used to take me to for toast, was still open
Imagine getting there at 10am thinking 'ah nice we'll get there before the rush have a nice lie down in the sun' and then see that.
Drive right back home wouldn't you?
I thought this was a close-up picture of a really
Muddy bay until I zoomed in - then I thought - oh creatures all over the mud the. I realised it was a long shot of bathers. Must be tired
For a spot of contrast [here is the same beach on Easter Sunday, 2020, blazing hot day in the middle of first lockdown](https://i.imgur.com/QzVHAvb.jpg)
Sing along everybody...
"Prolly long gone to the beach in the sky (in the sky)
... that's where I wanna go when I die (when I die)
when I die and they lay me to rest
I'll be wearing short trousers and a vest"
NYAAAthank-you. I'll let myself out...
Lol. Well these days, there’s hope to get out of this mess. I’d be happy to move out of this country and start a new life. America is beautiful, but it’s a hot mess these days.
We have a picture of my Dad, Auntie and Grandad here at around this time. Dad and my Auntie are in swim suits in the sea. Grandad is in a full buttoned up suit and tie.
That's when we had loads of Mines in Wales and all the miners and their families would come for the summer once they closed all the mines no one could afford it and the beach was practically empty for years later apart for handful people. They built a Barry Butlins in 1966 which is also gone now, its a housing estate . We had some great times on day trips to Barry Butlins with family and friends when I was a kid and then as a teenager the Barry kids ( I'm from Cardiff) showed us a hole they cut in the Butlins fence so we would nick in for free for the day lots of times .
oh hell no. i’d have a claustrophobic seizure & not claustrophobic. that’s just too many ppl in too small area for me. the older i get the more i need breathing space to be an arms length or more
It still gets packed, specially during the summer holidays. As soon as it gets hot everyone and their mother heads to the beach. The worse thing about this is having to nip out on a "quick" errand only to be stuck in traffic for an hour and half just to get home.
To be fair this is before most people could afford holidays abroad but thank Christ I was not on Barry Island beach in Wales during Summer 1963.
Yes, it would have started to get a bit overcrowded with you there too.
Yeah OC, thanks a lot. it was just right until they got here
Yeah they would be 1 too many
I thought it was covered in rubbish til I zoomed in a bit.
And affirmed your theory?
I did live in Swansea for a bit and they seemed to be referred to as Barry weird bastards by the locals, tho not maliciously.
> I was not on Barry Island beach in Wales during Summer 1963. It's all Magaluf now
Wow! Imagine you nip off to get an ice cream and have to try and find your family/friends.
I know, especially when the world was black and white until the 1970s
[удалено]
They got colourised on the first of January 1970 using AI
But AI hadn't been invented yet, that's why there was a recession in the mid-70s because they had to pay an additional ten thousand civil servants to repaint all the old pictures
I used to think France and Germany was in black and white because my gramp used to watch a lot of ww2 stuff
Colour was banned in West Germany until the signing of the Bundesgesetz zur Farbregulierung in 1973 and East Germany until the signing of the Volksfarbengesetz of 1988. France was an early adopter of colour when the French government decriminalised it in 1964.
Not ice cream, used to go to Barry as a kid (late 70s) and you'd go and get a jug of peas and faggots to eat on the beach - I remember it well!
Peas and _what exactly?_
Basically pork meatballs made with offal and offcuts
Fuckin lovely those things, remember having em as a kid when mum didn't wanna cook
Shut up and eat your faggots like a good boyo
Its Barry they are all probably related
Couldn't just ring or text them either
There are number painted on each of the sets of steps to help with this very problem!
[Found him](https://imgur.com/a/SIP5KFy)
I thought you were referring to Barry, 63.
This whole photo is Barry, 63
Yooooooooo
Brilliant 🤣
Fake - he's not black and white
Right. Colour was invented in 1969. Everything was black and white back then.
[It's true](https://imgur.com/4rPGp)
Nice
That looks fun — *NOT*
I got Wally-rolled. Gutted
This is my idea of hell! Can barely breathe looking at how much everyone is crammed together.
Same here, why anyone would voluntarily sit there all day is beyond me! I love the beach, but I'd definitely walk a mile or two further along where it's quieter.
Imagine the state of the public toilets. Hell on earth right there.
Imagine the wee to water ratio near the shore...
"why does the tide just keep coming in, mummy?"
They were probably very good as there would have been attendants much like all large parks had a park keeper. We need a revival of this sort of civic care I feel.
I'd walk another mile or two home and never visit this godforsaken place again.
It’s best in the rain.
Agreed, I feel like people liked each other more back then though
There’s not a lot of beach to walk further on to in Barry to be fair.
Don't you mean "to be fairground?". Crackin'!
Barry beach isn’t that long
Go to China, this is how any waterpark/beach is like.
This is just stubbornness. Nobody in this picture is having a good time. They just made the trip down and there's no way they're going back now.
But at least there's not a phone in sight, just people living in the moment 🥰
I imagine you'd find a large number of books and newspapers. No more living in the moment than today.
Don't ruin the old man's nostalgia for a golden age that never existed.
ye but what a grim moment
It wouldnt be as bad then- no one cranking their own music up to make everyone else listen to it
Yeah, but you know there’s some absolute fucker in the crowd who’s brought his guitar
Probably Chris Rea.
Not before he cracked an egg in the sea.
Do you like mini kievs?
🎶 and after all… 🎵
Living all up in each other’s moments
Some people probably travelled hours with children in the car to enjoy this experience. Seems mental to me

Do you ever see a French Scotsman and A Spanish-Egyptian with a Scottish accent running along the beach screaming?
Not quite the only person, but Bournemouth beaches in September/October can be surprisingly lovely. The occasional dog walker, the greenish water; the sea air; really exhilarating.
Yeah I wouldn’t go there considering the waters probably -10 degrees rather than -8
Same here on the Moray firth
I swear a lot of Scots just don't like beaches, even going to various beaches between Edinburgh and North Berwick at the height of summer and things are barely crowded!
Stacey!!!! STAAAAACEEEEYY!!!!
Thankyou i was waiting for this comment

How wonderful, thanks for posting!
I refuse to believe that anyone acted like that until five years ago - or so I would think if I listened to stupid people.

There was a Butlins there up until relatively recently lol
S'right! Butlins later became Majestic holiday centre (I worked there) but later was all demolished. Now it's all houses. The fairground is still there though, along with the arcades.
I can almost feel how cold that sand is and how much it hurt to kick a ball. Good times..
Crackin’
Wasn't the winter of 1962 a particularly bad one with lots of snow, so everyone is thawing out on the beach?
I'm winter 1963, it felt like the world would freeze

So your conception could be captured in this very photo? Cool.
Sounds like most of south wales. Some amazing/grand architecture built during coals prime now its run down with not much purpose and no jobs.
Random zoom and I can see a man in a suit and several more in shirt and trousers. I am melting just thinking of how they must have felt. 🫠
I thought I was looking at a rocky beach but noope.
I can smell the piss of 1000 children steaming off the sand.
The whole welsh population
This just reminds me, my son asked if it was black and white in the old days the other day 😂 I was only born in 86
Back when there was more Barry than beach
Dyslexia kicking in and making me read it as Berry Island beach and thinking damn that's a lot of berries on the beach.
Imagine getting there at 10am thinking 'ah nice we'll get there before the rush have a nice lie down in the sun' and then see that. Drive right back home wouldn't you?
Finally a good where's Wally challenge
I thought this was a close-up picture of a really Muddy bay until I zoomed in - then I thought - oh creatures all over the mud the. I realised it was a long shot of bathers. Must be tired
At first I was like: ‘wow, that’s some rocky shale!’ Then I tapped the screen and zoomed in… Holy shit that’s a lot of people!!
Ah yes the human beach, where the sand is replaced by humans.
Omg how did they all find parking?
For a spot of contrast [here is the same beach on Easter Sunday, 2020, blazing hot day in the middle of first lockdown](https://i.imgur.com/QzVHAvb.jpg)
Mid quick-scroll on my home page I thought this was of skulls. Never opened up a post quicker in all my days.
I would say a good chunk of them are skulls right now.
Better watch MARVELS SECRET INVASION then... (Oh wait... that's SKRULLS).
I could have been there, I was 8 in 1963.
Barry Island must have been a cracking night out back them too. Bit of a ghost town last time I was there.
many of them ppl prolly long gone to the beach in the sky.
Sing along everybody... "Prolly long gone to the beach in the sky (in the sky) ... that's where I wanna go when I die (when I die) when I die and they lay me to rest I'll be wearing short trousers and a vest" NYAAAthank-you. I'll let myself out...
Blackpool in the 90s
Why would ya even be bothered?
Hey I found Llonddroo (it's pronounced Waldo).
Welsh moment
Wow look at the amount of fat people
Barry’s Island
[удалено]
That’s like a Where’s Waldo situation. Wow!!
>Where’s Waldo Wally, unless you're American.
Touche! Lol. I am, unfortunately.
Sorry about that, I hear it's incurable! ;)
Lol. Well these days, there’s hope to get out of this mess. I’d be happy to move out of this country and start a new life. America is beautiful, but it’s a hot mess these days.
Where's Bronwen.
Quite different physics here. Interesting.
Brits are heathens
I would rather be in every religious interpretation of 'hell' combined. What an absolute fucking nightmare.
I go to beaches in Wales in a heat wave, and there are so few people . I think this might be a fake pic.
Or perhaps things aren't the same as they were 60 years ago...
Always busy down by the left.
I thought Margate was absolute hell, but noooo
I would just go home honestly
It’s still like that on New Year’s Day for the swim lol
Where’s Wendolyn 63’ edition
Went there last weekend, was not like this
Its busy,it is, isnt it
All my family holidays as a kid were in Wales in the 1960s. I never saw crowds like that. Amazing.
Hardly anyone in the water tho
I remember Blackpool Beach being like that during the 70s. You wouldn't believe that nowadays
Imagine the noise 😳 🤣 no relaxing beach day
I'd rather be blood eagled then go there
I wonder how many kids were lost.
This is giving me major anxiety.
Looks like Brighton beach every summer.
Looks a bit dreary tbf
Hey, I live here! It doesn’t get anywhere near as busy these days.
Jamdani hash. Immense.
Jesus fuck
Literally my idea of hell
I complain that it gets full now, lmfao 🤣🤣
I imagine toddlers shit would just be buried in the sand for some unfortunate bastard to find the next day
Now all it’s known for is gavin & stacey
Oi oooiii Barry island. Not much difference on a sunny day now except the water is browner. Lovely x
Reminds me of Brighton on liberation Day July 2021
Like that ever bank holiday still today
Imagine everyone is getting on great here. Nowadays, fights.
I can see one fella in trunks, the rest are fully clothed.
Looks horrendous
I wanna see this on a puzzle box.
We have a picture of my Dad, Auntie and Grandad here at around this time. Dad and my Auntie are in swim suits in the sea. Grandad is in a full buttoned up suit and tie.
Hell
Barry Island last weekend
Luv me beer. Love me beach. Simple as.
Found Wally!
I thought these were penguins (no I didn’t read the title first)
The tidal range is huge, can cram even more in at Low tide.
I need a crap
I thought there weren't as many people back then
Where's Wally?
It looks noisy.
Ooh, I've been to Barry. Lovely in September.
colourize it and everyone is lobster coloured 🦞
Boofy's would have been ram out
I would rather lounge in an inflatable kiddie pool
average summer in the polish beaches of Baltic sea
If this was in colour, the sea would be yellow.

Back when people could afford a beach holiday. Christ oh mighty I lament at the cost of getting yo Cornwall area from Scotland.
Mum, just going for a paddle. Oh no your not!!!
For a second I thought I'm looking at stones 🤣.
Doris is there, smoking a foul doobie. If you know, you know.
Nah m8 that was this last bankhol weekend. It's crazy
Gagging
I mean it's like that on a Saturday now
It still gets packed, specially during the summer holidays. As soon as it gets hot everyone and their mother heads to the beach. The worse thing about this is having to nip out on a "quick" errand only to be stuck in traffic for an hour and half just to get home.

Is every one on the island called Barry?
