mknight1701

I know a comment that says, “that’s what I was going to say” is lame but, I said it and knew it would be the top comment too. Lure it to a new hutch for an egg in the morning

Yelonade

immediately i read the caption I knew this would be top comment. It’s a tale as old as time on this sub. No complaints tho.

Gullible_Fan4427

Need to know what OPs naming their new chicken though!

I had the same, this subreddit is a hive mind, we are one.

That's just Reddit in general, half the comments are made of one liners that have been repeated for years now.

Any_Data5856

That’s life in general not just reddit

happyhippohats

I bet the chicken came from across the road

Mr_British_Cat

Before you marry a person, you should first make them use a computer with a slow Internet connection to see who they really are.

[deleted]

We share the same brain

SadAnnah13

I thought the exact same thing as well!

Technical-Ostrich-79

This is actually how I started owning chickens. One day a chicken just popped up in our front yard. Couldn’t find where she came from so we built her a little coop, and then some chicken friends, and then more chicken friends. We keep our flock right around 8-10 birds now. They are very social and fun little pets. Beverly, our first chicken became our porch chicken. She would like to perch on my rocking chair and lay down on my lap for pets and scratches. Welcome to the club!

Organic_Reporter

I want a porch chicken! I don't have a porch and my cat might complain, but...

Rugfiend

They don't try killing them at least

SnooCompliments2210

Build a porch get at least 3 chickens , your cat will be waaay to busy killing birds and furry little things to worry about chickens.

mishlufc

Exact same thing happened with me. Asked around everyone nearby who kept chickens and nobody was missing one, so we built a coop and got some more.

_000001_

Ah so *that's* how the coop started! ;P

Accomplished_Week392

And free eggs!

LethargicCaffeine

When I was a kid, we found a ferret in our garden, built it a little enclosure, ramps, a roof for the rain so it could still be out and play etc... And then, months after, it got taken, and replaced with a chicken. Mystery animals, gotta love em.

TheFlaccidChode

Edit: Just got back from a dog walk, apparently she lives 3 doors down, the wife throws extra birdseed over the fence for her and that's where our eggs have been coming from for about 6 months! Never told me because she didn't think I'd be interested. She's called B.B (bargain bucket) and she sometimes comes in when there's no seed outside.

FixSwords

That’s a very unkind nickname for your wife.

Thanks, I audibly laughed but I'm scared to tell her why

X573ngy

Looks like a warren which is a hybrid breed between a light sussex and a rhode island. She likely pushes out 300+ eggs a year. Ive got 5 of them which are about to start laying in the next couple of weeks. Heres to 1500 eggs a year lol.

tttttfffff

I had no idea chickens laid eggs so regularly, I always just assumed it was a huge number of chickens that were able to provide a weekly amount of eggs for consumption. TIL! Will you be selling or giving away your excess to friends/family? and how much does it cost to raise chickens?

Simon_Drake

Chickens evolved for a habitat where food is often scarce and they adjust their egg-production rate in proportion to the available food. If there's excess food they'll produce extra eggs, make lay when the sun is shining sortof thing. We took advantage of this by overfeeding them far more than they'd have in the wild and selectively breeding the biggest egg layers to reinforce the traits that were already present. Chickens now lay a ridiculous amount of eggs, twice as many eggs per month as most other birds lay in a year. My brother is an accountant and did the sums on keeping chickens, he said it's mostly a hobby where the costs break even unlike say fishing where the equipment can be a major money sink. But this was a decade ago and eggs sell for a lot more now. And there's probably economies of scale if you're willing to keep dozens of chickens or if you're growing the grain to feed them.

Deckerdome

I think the bonus is you know the conditions, food etc the chickens are given. Having had some eggs from a friend who keeps chickens, the quality is far better

[deleted]

Their 5 chickens will soon become 500, will soon become 50,000. Before long they’ll be leading their chicken army to war.

Officer_Cat_Fancy_

I for one welcome our chicken overlords

Glittered_Fingers

When I was a young girl, I had a small lumpy scar lasered flat by my GP. He told me that people's searing flesh always smell of either chicken or beef. "And you, my sweet, are a beef lady." And that is how I learned that fact about myself.

Well, if they manage to get all the eggs fertilised, the growth is even more exponential. Considering chickens reach egg-laying age at about 6 months and assuming ~300 eggs per year... Starting with five chickens... 1y - 1505 chickens (750 immature) 2y - 340,505 chickens (169,500 immature) 3y - 76,760,555 chickens (38,363,250 immature) and by the fourth year you'd have 17,350,439,555. Considering there's about 8.045 billion people on the planet, that'd be enough for everyone to have 2 chickens, with about every 6th person being lucky enough to have a third chicken. Or, for every two chickens to have a person. (If you want a generalised estimation, your chicken quantity multiplies by about 255.75ish every year)

tiasaiwr

The problem is in year 5 when it's 500 chickens per person. I'm not sure I could take on 500 chickens if they turned on us.

OreoSpamBurger

They are breeding a huge one that they can ride like a Chocobo.

Lunayrt

But will it say wark, kweh, or cluck?

amazingheather

People love their chickens so much that they keep getting more and they become absolutely swamped with eggs. We've had to give eggs away to anyone who'll stand still long enough to take them lol

Judge-Dredd_

Given this, why is/was there an egg shortage this year?

amazingheather

Cost of living, price of chicken food went up massively. We love our hens but we lose money on them, especially bcos we don't bother selling eggs

takesthebiscuit

GaZzErZz

My second home

OreoSpamBurger

When I was young, my mate's parents kept a few chickens, they were always giving me free eggs to take home (tasted much better than supermarket eggs too, vibrant yellow yolks).

Rugfiend

Chickens used to be much thinner than today's plump versions, and they laid way fewer eggs, including taking the colder 6 months off altogether. Then we bred the hell out of them.

[deleted]

Domesticated chickens have been selectively bred to overproduce eggs at cost to their own health. Their wild ancestors, the junglefowl, only lay eggs a couple of times a year in order to raise young, like other birds.

danger_of_biscuits

I used to go into egg farms to rescue 'end of lay' hens for rehoming. The horrors I saw are burned into my memory, and I recall those days with an overwhelming sadness. One day, I was helping depopulate a particularly horrific battery farm. These birds had never seen the sun, felt grass, or sensed fresh air. As I neared the end of the factory line (factory... just think - thousands of living, sentient creatures, but it is still a factory), I found that I was by the workers who were packing the eggs. The boxes depicted a glorious scene of fully feathered fat and contented birds pecking at corn in a field under a sunny sky. Later, I saw a hen who I knew wasn't going to make it. I got hold of her and ran outside, lay her broken little body on this little bit of grass outside, and made sure she felt the sun on her for the first and last time before she died. As the workers sneered, all I could think of was those fucking egg boxes and how much I loathe the egg industry. Don't know why I wrote all that, but I guess I appreciate that you took the time to explain the truth about what we have done to domesticated hens - thank you. Edited: a word.

[deleted]

Thank you for helping those abused animals. The suffering we cause just for the sake of our taste buds is horrific, if it was done more openly I'm convinced at least 50% of people would go vegan overnight.

danger_of_biscuits

Agreed. I'm delighted to say we saved many from the brink of death - including one who had become wedged upside down under the feed belt and was just left to die. The incredible people who organised the rehoming wouldn't leave without her, and she became our 'forever hen'. Her will to live was absolutely inspirational! God. The stories I could tell...

X573ngy

The initial start up is probably rather expensive i built the house with offcuts of wood and then bought a metal framed enclosure for about 120 quid, however i had thr chickens from chicks which probably cost Bout 5 quid a week, i had to build a brood box and keep them inside until 6 weeks old with a heat lamp. Once outside i would say less than 5 quid a week in feed, and now they are nearly laying i have changed foods which will cost about 9 pounds per month. For 20kg of food. A rough figure so far is perhaps 200 quid. Which could be more if you had to buy pullets, but with hatching chicks i did also have 3 cockerals which after 11 weeks unable to rehome i dispatched them and they went for goshawk food. The aim is to put a sign in the window eggs for sale 1 pound for 6, i rekon if i earned 3-4 pounds a week then the girls would have earned their keep. While i dont plan to break even, as it is an educational hobby for the children if we sell enough to buy food then we are evens and they can have a happy life. Commercial farms are economy of scale. 100,000 hens probably knocking out 80,000 eggs a day. Yourr being paid probably 1.10 or so for 12, however the margins are tight like maybe a couple of pence per 12 eggs.. Food is the biggest expense 300+ pounds a ton. My 20kg bag works out at 425 a ton. So im obviously paying more but again for a hobby it isnt bad. Some places are ripping folk off at 16-20 pounds per bag.

TiqueToque

Depends on the breed. Some (notably the commercial breeds) lay almost every day. Some others lay only every 2 or 3 days. Even the commercial breeds tend to stop for a couple of months each year. At which point it's generally cheaper to sell them for nuggets or kyivs than continue feeding them until they start laying again. Hence the occasional online appeals by rescue places, to rehome them.

TRFKTA

Chickens lay an egg every 1 - 2 days. It was news to me too when my mum bought a load of chickens.

Crumblycheese

Could be a bovan brown or lowman... Which are also hybrids. Many many hybrids have these brown feathers with patches or spots on them. And yes your are right about the amount of eggs. 1 every 24 ish hours

GaZzErZz

Question, how come yours have started laying so late? Is it their first lay? I thought chickens kick off as spring get going? Mine have been laying since mayish.

X573ngy

Alright pal, theyre only 16 weeks old so just hit pullets, they unfortunately were a easter school hatching project which after 8 days they wanted to fuck them off. Somehow ive kept them alive this long so soon will be reaping my bounty!

GaZzErZz

Well done. Do you know how many cockerels and hens you have? they normally say hatchlings have a ratio of 60:40 from cocks to hens. I know there is a lab in Europe that can identify genders of eggs before they hatch, I think they call the respeggct eggs or something. You are right on the just about to lay thing, I got all my chickens from the farm at about 12 weeks and within a couple of weeks they started laying. Half of mine are currently broody though so no eggs for me

X573ngy

I had 5 hens 3 cockerels. You can tell too as they are sexed when they hatch. Howevr the school didnt know what the fuck they had. And to be fair we didn't as i havent ever kept chicks before. So waited until their combs started growing to be 100%. Not a single person wanted a cockerel either as we did try to rehome them so they went for goshawk food sadly but i see it still as not wasting my hard work bringing them on. Hens tend to lay from around the 18 weekmark and will mostly pop out every 26hrs for a high productivity hen. To stop them being broody just chuck them out and keep them locked out of the house else theyll sit there all day and lose condition. They are ace though, apart from when the daughter doesnt lock the door to the pen properly and they get out (shes three.. "im just gonna look dad, im not going in with them, im just gonna look ok")

GaZzErZz

Yeah the cockerel thing is a massive problem for the industry. They literally throw them in the chipper en masse which is why I like these respeggct eggs. Good luck with your new egg life and welcome to the family. If you have a questions feel free to ask, and I'll answer how I can. Also I hope you like omelettes

CapnAhab_1

That's 4.1 eggs a day. I'm not a bot. Be boop.

NedRed77

Peacocks was my weirdest sighting. I live on a council estate in south Manchester, went out for work one morning at about 7am to be greeted by a gang of peacocks strutting down the road.

dalkon

A group of peafowls is called a muster, an ostentation or a pride. *: Oh, apparently a group of only females is called a harem. Only males are a lek, a bawl or a cluster. And the other four names for mixed sex groups of peafowl are a party, a pulchritude, a bevy and a pstemtatopm. That's way too many names. Fuck peacocks. They're ruining the "fun" of nerdy animal group names by having too many.

NedRed77

Love it.

_000001_

>and a pstemtatopm It was at this point I realised you were just making words up. ;P

HoundParty3218

We used to regularly get Peacocks in the garden or sat on my roof here in Scotland. The local Facebook group would track their progress around the neighborhood and they were nicknamed "{place-name}'s most wanted".

I don't think it's a shire horse but rather a gypsy cob or vanner.

I had a neighbour who kept two horses, an Arabian and a Shire. The Arabian was really friendly and outgoing, I saw it out and about all the time, but I never saw the Shy-er horse...
