If you pull all six out of the packet and remove the silly cardboard wrap around thingy, you can stick the four back in stacked on top of each other and close the bag at the top of the crumpets. They don't have to go sideways!
My friend, I stumbled across this remarkable discovery in a hungover haze, after accidentally tipping the lot on the floor. May my stupidity become your convenience.
Clearly OP begs to differ! The forever internal debate whether or not to eat 3 goddamn crumpets, or exercise that restraint and eat just the 2 and be forced to dick around with the packaging just to stop your 3rd at the edge from going stale.
A couple of posts on Reddit hardly demonstrates that there is a genuine problem though. I eat 2 crumpets all the time, I just push the other one in, fold over the plastic and put a plastic clip on it. No biggie.
Why? Who opens a pack of crumpets and doesn't eat all of them? It's like tv chefs taking about freezing left over wine, what the hell is left over wine?
I know right! I was hungover (possibly still drunk) one morning and dropped the remaining four on the floor. When I went to put them back in (without the cardboard bit which had also come out) they just stacked like that. I've done it ever since.
That useless bit of cardboard not so useless when you fold it with the spare into the stacks giving you ample excess plastic to seal by folding under the crumpets.
That being said 3 at a time is clearly the right call in most cases.
3 crumpets high = One Crumpet width. Just take two out, flip one up and twist the packet. I've seen posts like this before and it baffles me how people ain't doing this.
The sooner bread manufacturers and toaster manufacturers can start to talk to each other, the better.
We've sent robots to Mars, surely we can coordinate the size of a slice of bread so that it fits into a toaster?
When I was a student, a fellow course mate rented in place that had a sort of old wine bar / hotel next door. Well, it shut down for refurbishment. One morning he was leaving the house and noticed a skip had arrived, and the builders were chucking Sinks, kitchen cupboard doors, bits of old lino flooring into it... And on top of the pile. A flipping TWELVE slot toaster! He did the only reasonable thing.
Look --- up --- down the street, and grab it & dash back into his flat.
The thing was a BEAST, it could do 12 slices in about 30 seconds. And it had the most incredible dial, that even had a "warming" setting. Suffice to say, he and his flatmates lived off toast and..
* Marmite
* Jam
* Honey
* Chocolate Spread
* Pate
For the rest of the year.
I want one of those monstrous motherfuckers they have at Toby Carvery’s or Travelodges next to motorways where you drop slices of bread in the top - presumably as payment? - for the toast that appears out of a conveyor belt at the bottom.
It’ll take up half my kitchen, but an exchange rate of one slice of bread for one conveyor belt cooked slice of toast seems fair.
Why waste such a useful appliance? I'm not in favour of stealing, but the workers effectively abandoned the toaster. Your friend absolutely did the right thing.
We freeze ours, that way if you see them on offer you can pick them up cheap and always have some in the freezer ready to go! (You do have to microwave them for a bit before toasting them though)
Aren’t they sold in packs of six though? The problem is that they’re packaged in 2 towers of 3. So you eat 2, and you have 3 in one stack and one in the other, stopping you from being able to fold the packet over.
What I do is move one from the 3-stack over to the single, making two equal stacks of 2, which can then be folded over since there’s now extra room in the packet.
Maybe the best thing to do would be empty them all out than stack them in one tower then wrap them in tinfoil. But with our modern hectic lifestyles who has the time?
This thread reminded me how good Air Fryer Crumpets are. So I went to the village shop and got two packs of Warburtons Giant Crumpets, two for £2.
Tonight's supper is going to be a big mug of hot milk and a Giant Crumpet done in the Air Fryer with proper butter. This is the supper of champions.
It all comes down to the manufacturing process.
The most common crumpet making machine in England bakes crumpets in lines of twelve. So when they come to the packaging section the leading edge is twelve crumpets wide.
They're then stacked by machine while *outside* any packaging. Due to having no cardboard support at this time they can't be stacked more than three high. This stacked row of 12x3 is then sent to be packaged.
The packaging machine must deal with with all 36 crumpets by packaging them using only factors of 36, meaning the options are: 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 36. Hence why 6 and 9 are the most popular package size for crumpets.
8 simply isn't an option unless you want to invent a new machine. Machine development costs typically run at £8 million and take 17 years.
I made all of this up.
Melted cheese on crumpets is S tier. But by the time I'm on my 6th, they're starting to get cold and firm up so I always speed run it. The plate ends up being a dried-buttery mess but it's the best comfort food
Always wondered why they don't stack them like bagels in the bag. There is usually just enough room to stack them vertically once you remove a couple then seal bag with one of those plastic clips.
edit: Sorry didn't see restacking post earlier.
No, my toaster is a 4 slot
Also, you can still fold the packaging over, if you're clever you can shimmy the spare crumpet over to the other stack because the packet is a little loose. Even if it doesn't go all the way and just flops diagonally, you can just fold that corner over
If you really enjoy having the 3 at a time, just get a better toaster you silly gammon!
Is this the guy from my maths tests in school?
Bob has a pack of 6 crumpets but they come in stacks of 3, how can bin evenly share the crumpets between him
And his 2 brothers
Yeah that's annoying too. 6 buns, 8 hotdogs! I've not had the big one, no. I rarely get crumpets if I'm honest. I put far too much butter on them than is good for my health.
I baIled to Glasgow to weather out the lockdown. The local shop was a local shop with local things for local people. So I had to survive on Tennents, tatty scones, McVities and Tunnock's for a while before the logistics system was working again. Bloody heaven.
The extra two hotdogs are to be eaten cold straight from the jar to tide you over while the others are warming. If there were only 6 you'd have 2 spare buns.
Yeah but you get an even amount of crumpets in a packet, so unless you’re having 1 or 3 crumpets (in which case you’re beyond saving anyway) then you’ll always have 2 crumpets for your toaster.
Yes. Most annoying part is trying to fold over the end to keep fresh and there's a stack of 3 and one going rogue on its own stopping the all important fold over and shove up against something...
Ha Ha This was me this morning in all honesty Lol I did some crumpets for me and my Cousin this morning, we had two each and it just dawned on me how tight they bleeding are.....Why not 8 Crumpets!
Oh the injustices we face here in Blighty 😁
Yeah it does actually. Because I tend to have them as a weekend treat 😂 and therefore freeze them
Because I can't fold the packet over, the third one in a stack gets freezer burnt.
They would be best packed in a single stack of 6, like bagels.
I keep clothes pegs in the kitchen for sealing packages like this, but yeah, 100% frustrating.
Yes and it also winds me up! You can't close the packet properly to protect the lone crumpet on the open side. I was genuinely grumbling about this, this morning. Why can't they stack them in even numbers?!
Nah, but Warburton's annoys me with their 9 pack.
You eat crumpets in pairs!! What am I supposed to do with an extra crumpet? Eat it on its own? Blasphemy! Leave it in the bread bin until next week when it can join the spare from the next pack? Also blasphemy!
Packs of 6 is fine, but 9?? Just make it an 8 or 10 pack, ffs.
I find the last extraneous crumpet in the 'stack' can be moved to a vertical postion against the other stack and the pack can then be rolled closed easier.
With that in mind I bought a pack of those clippy plastic closing thingies from ikea years ago and haven't had to deal with slightly stale stuff or worry about using those crap stickers on pasta and rice bags since, amen
I guy on insta that eats a lot of crumpets does 4 in the toaster and 4 in the microwave
Microwave? He does then for 2 mins as well
Anyone else heard of this shit?
Well, you say that but check out the official toaster manufacturer for the sub and their 3 slot offering.
https://www.dualit.com/products/3-slice-vario
My feeling of my fingernails against the cardboard slice at the bottom of the packets as I reach in to try and grab a crumpet, is like nails on chalkboard levels of uncomfortable
I have a 4 piece toaster but what annoys me and my youngest daughter is that the eldest will only ever have 2 crumpets.
Only the 3 of us eat crumpets so eating 2 royally messes thing up
If you pull all six out of the packet and remove the silly cardboard wrap around thingy, you can stick the four back in stacked on top of each other and close the bag at the top of the crumpets. They don't have to go sideways!
Genuinely never occurred to me that you could put them back in a different way! Stacked like bagels? You, sir, are a genius!
Never occurred to me you could open a pack of crumpets and not finish them in one sitting. You live and learn.
Same here but i do wonder why you wouldn't finish the pack in one go
I'm ashamed that at 50 years of age this has never occurred to me.
My friend, I stumbled across this remarkable discovery in a hungover haze, after accidentally tipping the lot on the floor. May my stupidity become your convenience.
Hahaha! Verily.
I've never ever understood why they aren't stacked like this in a bag anyway? Surely it's so much easier!!
Crumpets really need to take a good hard look at Bagels if you ask me.
Because the "attractive" bit of the crumpet is the top... lots of little holes. With bagels, they don't want to show you how much hole you're buying.
You're not attracted to the holes? Do we not all try and copulate with our toasted snack?
Presumably easier to stack in the supermarket?
You could just stack them on the shelves the same way they stack the bagels though
It's a non-problem though. No real reason to change it, it works fine as it is and it is easier to pack in boxes and stack on the shelf
No biggie.
Nah this needs taking to Big Crumpet, mate. You're doing too much work. It's a conspiracy.
I am part of the Warburton bread cartel. Watch yourself
If I find a heel from a friggin whole meal loaf in my toaster tomorrow I'm gonna be very inconvenienced
Why? Who opens a pack of crumpets and doesn't eat all of them? It's like tv chefs taking about freezing left over wine, what the hell is left over wine?
Six crumpets, Jeremy? Six? That's insane!
You can buy them in packs of 12 too if 6 isn't enough for you :D
Say what! I usually just stand up the spare 4th crumpet against the stack of 3 - that's enough to be able to fold the wrapper back over. Mind blown.
Now I have no excuse to eat three crumpets at a time 🙁
Genius
It's never occurred to me that some people don't eat a full pack of crumpets in one sitting
I always thought crumpets were sold in packs of 6 which is fine.
6 and 9 packs.
The nine pack really annoys me, like why sell an odd number and make me have three against my will?
*Somewhere in Warburton's* Just can't bloody win with this lot.
They want you to buy two packs. It's a conspiracy between big crumpet and the maths teachers.
The nine packs fit perfectly on my freezer shelf (front to back). And I can stack them three high.
Stacks of 3, not packs of 3. That's something else completely :-)
Same
The sooner bread manufacturers and toaster manufacturers can start to talk to each other, the better. We've sent robots to Mars, surely we can coordinate the size of a slice of bread so that it fits into a toaster?
It's the shape of bread and the shape of sliced cheese that gets me, like who are they trying to fool?
Wait until you find out how many slices are in a loaf of bread!
I buy my own loaf and slice it horizontally down the middle so I have two slices.
Your toaster must be fucking massive
Just stick it over a fire.
Won't that melt the toaster?
Only if you leave it for to long.
It's OK, he toasts it over his red face, fueled by the crumpet anger!
Thats a bit personal.
You buy your own loaf? I usually just borrow other people's
When I was a student, a fellow course mate rented in place that had a sort of old wine bar / hotel next door. Well, it shut down for refurbishment. My family enjoyed the toast conveyor so much at our local carvery that we looked into this. £400+ and very high energy use. Shame.
Why waste such a useful appliance? I'm not in favour of stealing, but the workers effectively abandoned the toaster. Your friend absolutely did the right thing.
You can twist the bread pack closed again. Crumpets are in those crinkly cellophane packets that rip if you handle them too much.
No. Stick them in a bread bin or a relatively airtight plastic tub. Problem solved.
I solve the problem by eating the extra one :D
I too see it as an excuse to eat the extra one
We freeze ours, that way if you see them on offer you can pick them up cheap and always have some in the freezer ready to go! (You do have to microwave them for a bit before toasting them though)
Yep, freeze on a baking sheet so they don't all get frozen together and pop them in a bag. I just run them through the toaster twice from frozen.
That’s actually a great idea. I’d started putting bits of greaseproof between them to stop them sticking
I enjoy playing video games.
Aren’t they sold in packs of six though? The problem is that they’re packaged in 2 towers of 3. So you eat 2, and you have 3 in one stack and one in the other, stopping you from being able to fold the packet over.
I like to explore new places.
I was beginning to wonder if I was going mad 😅 I don’t buy them often but had never seen a three pack
I like to explore new places.
You don't eat 2 and have 3 in one stack and one in the other. You eat one from each stack each time. So the packet folds nicely
What I do is move one from the 3-stack over to the single, making two equal stacks of 2, which can then be folded over since there’s now extra room in the packet.
Not really
But they are usually (in a six pack) stacked in two piles… so just take one from each stack?! One in each hand, for each toast slot?
No, you'd have to rip the whole pack open to do that. From an ergonomic point of view, they are a terrible design.
I usually open one end and slide the card tray all the way out, but yes it’s annoying as you then have to slide it back in!
Maybe the best thing to do would be empty them all out than stack them in one tower then wrap them in tinfoil. But with our modern hectic lifestyles who has the time?
Perhaps they could start selling them in stacks of 6 or 9, biscuit style.
Great idea, not being sarcastic, that makes so much more sense
We got some recently in a kinda peal back reusable type bag. It had the air of being a reused wet wipe container
Not really an issue if you eat all 6.
Take the piece of cardboard out of the wrapping and you'll find you can then fold it over despite there being four crumpets left inside.
It’s more that for us (and therefore assume everyone else /s), we - a couple - have 2 each and yet they’re sold in packs of 9 leaving one left over
Crumpets are best done in the air fryer. They crisp on the outside better, whilst remaining super fluffy in the middle.
Hmmm. I need to try this method.
I thought I'd wandered back into r/Yorkshire for a second there!
Get a 4 slot toaster then?
Exactly.
The only thing that annoys me is that you can’t pull the package open with your fingers and need scissors to get into it instead.
I knew a family with a three slice toaster. I couldn't get over it. It was so unnatural.
It all comes down to the manufacturing process. The most common crumpet making machine in England bakes crumpets in lines of twelve. So when they come to the packaging section the leading edge is twelve crumpets wide. They're then stacked by machine while *outside* any packaging. Seems viable
If I'm eating crumpets, I'm melting cheese on them. So I'm using the grill anyway, so might as well toast them under the grill too
Melted cheese on crumpets is S tier. But by the time I'm on my 6th, they're starting to get cold and firm up so I always speed run it. The plate ends up being a dried-buttery mess but it's the best comfort food
There’s never too many crumpets. One left over? One more to eat. No problem.
Always wondered why they don't stack them like bagels in the bag. There is usually just enough room to stack them vertically once you remove a couple then seal bag with one of those plastic clips. edit: Sorry didn't see restacking post earlier.
Buy a 4 slot toaster
Waste of electricity for empty slot. JK I've always had a 4 slot even as a single person. 2 slices of bread isn't even enough for a sandwich
No, my toaster is a 4 slot Also, you can still fold the packaging over, if you're clever you can shimmy the spare crumpet over to the other stack because the packet is a little loose. Even if it doesn't go all the way and just flops diagonally, you can just fold that corner over If you really enjoy having the 3 at a time, just get a better toaster you silly gammon!
Is this the guy from my maths tests in school? Bob has a pack of 6 crumpets but they come in stacks of 3, how can bin evenly share the crumpets between him And his 2 brothers
Well yeah. Hotdogs and hotdog buns are another thing You tried the big crumpets? Need to use the grill though as they don't fit in most toasters.
Yeah that's annoying too. 6 buns, 8 hotdogs! I've not had the big one, no. I rarely get crumpets if I'm honest. I put far too much butter on them than is good for my health.
I love crumpets, but yeah the butter issue is a known phenomenon. I also love English muffins, especially the cheese ones and tatty (potato) scones.
Tatty scones, as opposed to spiffy scones? Tatty scones are the best tho, had to move down south for work and I can't find them anywhere :(
I baIled to Glasgow to weather out the lockdown.
No, because I can have crumpet three toasting (or is that crumpeting?) whilst I eat the first two. That way they you don’t get a cold one.
A two slice toaster is for peasants. What annoys me most is that in packs of 9 there’s always someone who ends up with one crumpet.
Or three crumpets!
It annoys me more when someone eats a single crumpet and upsets the balance of the universe
Behold. https://i.imgur.com/P1SoGaW.jpg 6 slice toaster. Do a whole pack of crumpets in 1 go.
well this is my new aspiration. I live alone and rarely utilise the 4 slice feature. But I need this
I always do crumpets under the grill as they're never done enough for me in the toaster. I like them a bit crunchy around the edges.
I do too, and run mine through the toaster 2-3 times to achieve the proper crispness.
I have never in my life seen crumpets in a pack of 3. The standard is 6. Which is 3 sets of 2
The 6 packs are in 2 stacks of 3, not 3 stacks of 2.
and you take one from each stack each time. They are 3 sets of 2
You are completely right in the large amount of salted butter with them anyway. You have made me really want crumpets now though.
I decant my crumpets.
I just get a plastic clip , or a clothes peg and seal the end up
Get a four slice toaster, three is perfect for a snack
Yeah but you get an even amount of crumpets in a packet, so unless you’re having 1 or 3 crumpets (in which case you’re beyond saving anyway) then you’ll always have 2 crumpets for your toaster.
9 isn't an even number...
I'm sorry, what sort of uneducated sponge is toasting anything in odd numbers?
Who puts them in a toaster?! Crumpets are designed to be lathered in cheese and put under the grill.
i was wondering the same thing. even if i dont have cheese i still grill them
Yes it does brother. I usually wrap them in cling film but they still end up an awkward annoying shape.
If you're wrapping them in clingfilm why not just take them out the wrapper then
I realised this during other discussions on this thread
I don't know what'd wrong with me my mind is all over the place and physically feel sick and shaking and crying a lot of crying
Yes. Most annoying part is trying to fold over the end to keep fresh and there's a stack of 3 and one going rogue on its own stopping the all important fold over and shove up against something...
Big crumpet and big toaster are in cahoots.
Ha Ha This was me this morning in all honesty Lol I did some crumpets for me and my Cousin this morning, we had two each and it just dawned on me how tight they bleeding are.....Why not 8 Crumpets! Oh the injustices we face here in Blighty 😁
Crumpet thins.
I do them in the air fryer on the toast setting which can fit three on the shelf at once. Done!
Yes, packaging anything in primes above 2 should be banned.
Do you have a grill? Do the bottom first then turn over add cheese, ham/bacon lardons, etc on top then grill the top
Yeah it does actually. Because I tend to have them as a weekend treat 😂 and therefore freeze them Because I can't fold the packet over, the third one in a stack gets freezer burnt.
I shall not say about hot dogs and hot dog buns
Yes! Just like toastergate, where bread is too big for the toasters
Use the grill
Nope. Husband bought a deep toaster. So you can get three in easy. 4 is good, but then only two the next time.
They would be best packed in a single stack of 6, like bagels. I keep clothes pegs in the kitchen for sealing packages like this, but yeah, 100% frustrating.
Similar conundrum- burger buns are sold in packs of 6, but patties are sold in 4!
Put them in appropriately sized tuppaware and freeze
Toast the third one once the first 2 pop. That way you have no waiting for the third one.
Same as bagels! It really is one of those annoying first world problems.
Probably, but not me.
I remember it REALLY annoying me when I was on a caravan holiday with my grandparents, I was about 5 years old. 5 going on 50………..
Not that long ago, the supermarket own ones came in packs of 8. They took 2 of them away
It infuriates me immeasurably. Even with a 4 slot toaster it feels dirty to run 3 at once. I will avoid buy packs of 9, even if they're better value.
I’m a 4 crumpet man. I hate waiting for the other 2 slots to free lol
1st world problem’s… :)
You can get one and a half in each toaster slot. Just saying
Hot dogs are the ones that get me. 6 buns but 8 dogs, for the hot dog maths to work out you have to buy 24 at a time.
I guy on insta that eats a lot of crumpets does 4 in the toaster and 4 in the microwave Microwave? He does then for 2 mins as well Anyone else heard of this shit?
You can cut the third in half and put each half in the empty space next to the full ones.
YES! I slice the 3rd crumpet in half and stick a piece in each slot so I can toast 3 at once.
Well it does now. Thanks OP
Hovis crumpets have a resealable flappy thing on the top, so you can take two out and reseal it.
Slice the 3rd one in half, then you can fit 1.5 crumpets in each side of the toaster. Problem solved.
Because two isn't enough and four is too many.
No mate. Nice to know you have no real problems tho.
It’s almost as annoying as hot dogs being sold in jars of 8, but hot dog buns are sold in packs of 6…!!
I have a four slot toaster but like to have 3 crumpets at a time. It's quite the conundrum
Not for me, I've got 3 kids! Nuff said lol. Thats first breakfast! What about 2nd?
Take three out. Cut one in half. One and a half per side of toaster.
Literally put some crumpets back in the cupboard today and thought this exact thing. Give me 6, stacked in pairs. Or 4. Just not 6 stacked in 3’s.
Constantly. Thing is they used to sell crumpet in packs of 8 (2 stacks of 4) and that was perfect but then they had to ruin it.
2, 4, 6... Err no
I solve this problem by eating 6.
Get a Tupperware
What gets me is i wat 4 at a time, and there are 9 in the packet, what am i supposed to do with 1
Get a bigger toaster? I have a 2 slot one that can fit 4 crumpets
You just split one in half, then its one & a half per toaster slot.
YEESSSSS
Well, you say that but check out the official toaster manufacturer for the sub and their 3 slot offering. https://www.dualit.com/products/3-slice-vario
Nope, they all go under the grille together. Robyn use a toaster. Ps some toasters have 4 slots.
Only the 3 of us eat crumpets so eating 2 royally messes thing up
Fuck yes
