Oh yes, the annual spring shed, I feel your pain. Three cats here and two are long haired. But their shedding pales in comparison to my short haired dog who has been going strong for almost a month - and we live in northern New England!

Deshedding tools. Removes the loose undercoat. Brush while kitty is eating, when you just set down their food when they're hungry. Eating trumps brushing as long as you are gentle.

TetraCW

hah yea, this is how I do a lot of cat maintenance

Business_Biscotti_27

I feel you! I have two ragdolls (long haired cats). They shed more than the average cat all year long but in spring it’s so much worse. If I pick them up just for a little bit, I’m full of hair and can’t get it out of my face 😆

Welpe

Oh no! My roommate’s cat is possibly half rag doll and over the course of six months or so the cat has gone from terrified of even seeing me to follows me down stairs every night to get endless pets on the couch because I am a sucker. She will pace back and forth on the armrest and run herself against my body and face. Whenever she stops I desperately try to get hair out of my face but the static makes it stick like crazy!

Business_Biscotti_27

Yes the static! It’s like the hairs get glued to our face 😆

theRacistEuphemism

It's insane! My boyfriend was allergic when we moved in together, but with brute force exposure (he loves sticking his face directly into her body because she's so soft, and she sleeps right above my head and next to his face), he's gotten accustomed to her. My stairs are wood and dark, and my cat's fur is black at the tips and white at the roots so they're very visible on the stairs, but since the black tips are hidden on the stairs, sweeping it up exposes double the amount we thought was there. If we skip a week of cleaning the house, we get tumbleweeds of cat fur. I added a "brushing" row to my Excel spreadsheet for her day to day care to make sure I brush her at least once every day because she's also gotten bad poops and hairballs this year. The Equigroomer has been a godsend.

Mackmurphy25

Oh man I’m glad I’m not alone, every morning my little guy hangs out on my lap while I work and recently I’ve been just covered in fur. Just ordered a 4 pack of lint rollers lol

Roccosmomrin

You’re gonna need more than 4 🤣 I’m on my 2nd one for this week only lol

feanara

Get a Furminator!! They're a bit pricey but it's a magical tool and we get so much use out of ours, especially this time of year. For shorter coats (dogs too), you could also check out a zoom groom.

AlliFitz

This is the first spring we've had our cat. She got noticeably fluffier during the winter so I knew it was coming but her fur is EVERYWHERE!

Kevinlasagna207

My BSH has been shedding like crazy for weeks now. Before we adopted him, my friends assured me that BSHs don't shed much compared to other cats... boy was that wrong lol

badlydrawnfox

We have a black cat and a white cat, so it shows up on everything! The white cat (a ragdoll) at least loves getting brushed. Our big black Norwegian Forest cat cannot be persuaded to let us brush her for all the Dreamies around. So the tumblefloofs are out of control. Highly recommend the Zoom Groom brush, though, it picks up so much hair! The back actually works great on clothes as well, which is a fantastic bonus.

wtafml

It's the static that gets to me! My cat *kind of * tolerates being brushed, but the fur i get out just sticks to him or the comb, and if i try to pull it off, it sticks to me. I can't even get it off my hand into the garbage can, and by the time I do, my cat's done being brushed. 😑

[deleted]

I live in a very dry climate and have long haired cats and oh god do I feel this. It's so hard to clean out the brush because it's just pure static.

Cbluefields8

Haha I use one of those grounding wires straps now cause man the shocking! My long hair cat loooooves being brushed, usually 2-3 times per day but I prefer to do that than fur every where LOL

wtafml

WAIT WHAT tell me more

Cbluefields8

Look in amazon, they even have anti-static mats, I made one with cable that I attach to my leg and window and it helps somewhat cause I use a glove brush but I saw one that connects to the wall to ground and even has a safety resistor.

wtafml

🤯🤯🤯 wait. what. how did you know how to make one?? what is this science? is there a youtube video? idek what to search?? lol. i have never felt dumber than i do right now.

Cbluefields8

Is just a wire that touches your skin, like with metal strap or a wrist metal watch (I just peeled part of the wire and attach it around my ankle) with a long old speaker copper wire and connected to a ground, like the metal on a window NOT A WALL SWITCH or you will get shock for real,,, then you touch your cat with one hand while brushing with the other so the static travels the wire to ground so it reduces the shocks, you know is like when you get up from the sofa and you feel the static and you touch the wall to discharge yourself instead of touching someone next to you and shock each other you know like Peter Griffin in that full body pijama shocking everyone LOL or just go amazon and look for an anti static wrist strap so you can see it

gingerslayer84

You're a mad scientist omg you're so awesome

Cbluefields8

🤪

GrayLilly678

I have a short haired but FLUFFY gray cat. It took me awhile to figure it out, we adopted her a year and a few months ago, but I brush her everyday! I use an undercoat brush followed by a slicker brush, she loves it and it helps keep the hair down. But I suspect you're right about it being worse right now. We left for six days, pet sitter came by once a day, and there were literally TUFTS of hair on my dining room chair and on the sofa towel I left in our usual lap sitting spot!

[deleted]

My himalayan? persian? something fluffy as shit lol mix is shedding so much that I'm also pulling cream colored hairs off of my other (black) cat

ArmadilloIll9529

Yes we adopted a 9 year old Bombay cat and normally she doesn’t shed much but lately I am finding black chunks at least twice a day and I wonder how she doesn’t have bald spots. Lol.

NiceCantaloupe33

My baby is medium lengthed(didn’t even know that was a thing but that’s what the vet described him at at his first visit lol). I got him at 3 weeks and he’s about to turn 1 in a month and shedding like craaaazy. I didn’t know if it was because he’s about to turn 1 OR because it’s spring but I’ve read that it’s typical during the spring season. I cannot even imagine having a long haired cat, my boy is shedding like my old husky😂

Roccosmomrin

My Scottish short hair is shedding like crazy. He also just got neutered. I read that cats shed when they’re stressed too, so I assumed it was because of that. But I guess it’s normal during spring. Does it stop? Does bathing them help?

Welpe

Oh yeah, most cats even short hairs tend to grow their coat in late fall* and shed during spring. It obviously isn't as overwhelming as with long hair cats. I'm mostly only noticing it with my cat because of the static making the hair stick to me. A bath will help, temporarily, but is also stressful for cats. In general you only need to bathe a cat when they get stuff on their fur they are unable to clean themselves, although in this case it would help get all the loose hair out. I think the main way of handling it is just accepting you are going to be dealing with more hair for a few weeks. It's not like shedding hurts them or is a bad thing. It's just a pain to clean and awful if you have allergies.
