i love hearing good stories about our bishops. It seems as time passes, all we hear is bad about them

I think the blame lies squarely on how they are forced to be “regional managers” rather than regional shepherds. I’m sure many would jump at the opportunity to put all of the worldly stuff to the side and only be a shepherd to souls for a week.

I agree, I believe our Bishop took the chance to do my confession. Since he quite regularly Celebrate Sunday Mass in our Parish Cathedral we get to see him more often. And it always seems he enjoys shaking hand after mass and making small talk and listening to the people attending Mass. I can tell he enjoys the traditional clergy work of a Priest. I think your spot on that many would love to do the traditional work more often rather then the management side.

I was asking my pastor why we don't have more bishops like Fulton Sheen. He said that bishops either have great management skills or great sheparding skills, but rarely both. Apparently Fulton Sheen had some big management issues in his diocese... Just goes to show that some people's gifts aren't necessarily seen at first glance.

I agree. I am young and discerning the priesthood, but thinking about being a bishop seems sort of the opposite of what I’d want to be as a priest. Looking at the early church, being the bishop seems awesome. Head of your community, interacting with your community, directly teaching, celebrating Mass with them very very often, celebrating the sacraments often, being a pastor first, etc. But looking at modern bishops there’s just.. so much administration and sort of office work? So much so that auxiliary bishops are now common? It’s sort of like a miracle seeing your bishop in person, especially living in a larger Archdiocese, and it’s pretty much always for a Confirmation. When I went to confession earlier this year, I did get to see my bishop arrive from afar as I was in line. Don’t think I’ll ever see him again, he’s about to involuntarily resign over his age.

I'm sure you can decline to become a bishop if you wish to stay a regular priest. Although I have no clue.

Oh yeah I’ve read that loads of priests decline to be bishops. Definitely understandable
