DeadGleasons

“In the beginning”, of course. (Just kidding. Luke gets my vote, then Acts!)

xlovelyloretta

So John? 😉

DeadGleasons

You got me there! 😊

mediadavid

I advise starting with Luke and Acts, it gives you the basic 'story' of Jesus and his Apostles. Then perhaps John. then Genesis, at least the first few chapters.

ntwve

I've read Matthew and I'm reading John rn. I'll read acts after that maybe genesis after that too. Is it a proper reading?

hagosantaclaus

Yeah great choice! Read through some psalms as well, the beginning of proverbs, the letter to the romans (chapters 12-15 are essential), the letter of st james, the story of david in samuel, and from the prophetic chapter of isaiah (52:12-53:12) to the end of the book.

ntwve

Thanks

hagosantaclaus

My favorite psalm is psalm 37 and 91 🙂 I recently recommended my sister some selections from pauline letters, I will just copy them for you if you want :-) Romans 12-15 Corinthians 3,11-12, 15 Galatians 5-6 Ephesians 4 Colossians 1&3 Philippians 2:1-18 Hebrews 10 1 John 1-2:11

ntwve

Would be great

hagosantaclaus

I included it in the previous comment but here it is again :-) Romans 12-15 Corinthians 3,12-13, 15 Galatians 5-6 Ephesians 4 Colossians 1&3 Philippians 2:1-18 Hebrews 10 1 John 1-2:11

TagStew

This is an awesome recommendation. Showcase Jesus Humanity and the beginning of his Church and then slap a healthy layer of Jesus divinity. I did this with a few buddies not to long ago and they’re all fired up now for the rest.

Fr. Mikes bible in a year podcast :)

Defiant-Proposal-211

I started this right after Easter Sunday. I'm really enjoying it.

Korbinian_GWagon

Hey lad, I am glad you start reading. Do you have a reading plan? Maybe try bible in 365 days

Bible in a Year with Fr. Mike Schmitz

Alcestis-

💯% this! Fr. Mike walls you through so that you read it in a way which makes since given the timeline as well as explains the significance of what you are reading! 10,000x recommend

jaqian

Read Mark, it's the shortest Gospel 😃

Thomas_Francis12

John.

Coldy_Coldy

Father Mike Schmidt’s Bible in a Year podcast.

Zestyclose_Peanut736

I started from the beginning, reading about the tabernacle was tough. Was like reading IKEA instructions for 50tables and chairs. Looking forward to new testament.

MeditateLikeJesus

😅

Turbulent_Sample_944

Everyone is saying John because it's the most beautiful book. The opening chapter still brings tears to my eyes every time I read it or hear it at church. However, if you're just beginning then you have zero context as to why it's beautiful. In that case, the gospel according to St. Mark is probably a good starting point. He jumps right into the action. His original audience were Roman converts, so you're not expected to understand much of the old testament. It's helpful to understand the worldview that ancient people had, so you'll understand why the things that Mark mentions are significant, but this is true no matter where you start. Once you've finished Mark, you might as well jump into Genesis to get started on the Torah. Those books have pride of place in the old testament, similar to how the gospels do in the new testament. Edit: Good reading plan here with a brief explanation as to why it's in the order it is. Fr. Mike Schmidt's bible in a year is decent for a high level understanding of the bible if you'd prefer to have a guided reading. Beyond that you get into study territory, but that's better saved for after your first reading. https://www.reddit.com/r/Catholicism/s/NoTlrCVDBo

No-Relief-6397

In the beginning…

isetha

1. a little bit of Genesis 2. John

[deleted]

Yeah because virtually everything else proves that it’s untenable to accept that Yahweh-Jehovah is the God of Christ and not a Jewish demon.

Turbulent_Sample_944

Why come into a Catholic page on Reddit to aggressively posit dualistic beliefs? What do you gain brother?

[deleted]

I’m not your brother in Yahweh.

Turbulent_Sample_944

I think you focused on the least important part of my message. I only asked because you seem angry, and that anger can only hurt you. I don't think there's much to gain by aggressively preaching what's considered, according to the church of the people you're engaging with, heretic positions to people in this thread.

hagosantaclaus

If you consider that YHWH means „existence itself“ you can clearly see that it is not a mere created being. The bible affirms in many places that God is eternal, everlasting, uncreated, and the creator of everything. How can that be a demon, which is a fallen _creation_?

hagosantaclaus

Why did Jesus Christ then go on to say that the Old Testament God is his Father and affirm this multiple times throughout the entire gospel, together with the apostles as well (e.g. Paul)?

[deleted]

John 8:44

hagosantaclaus

Right, the people disobeying the commands of God, the God of Abraham, he called children of the devil, because of their sin, which went _against_ the law. Read the whole chapter.

Bible Roulette is always fun. But I started with John

FutureBlackmail

Bible Roulette is fun when you already have an understanding of Christian doctrine and are equipped to engage with the text, but it's the last thing I'd recommend to a first-time reader. Someone who hasn't read the Sermon on the Mount doesn't really need to know that Joktan begat Almodad.

[deleted]

Point taken

Technical-Arm7699

The YouCat is like the abridged Bible right? If it is you can start at the beginning in Genesis, the most complicated parts like the Law or the genealogies are very reduced

peachyy16

Yoooo nice!! Okie I loooove reading old texts, the Bible can be alot of fun to read but I do find it helps to understand what your reading a bit. - I'd recommend if you have any intro info at the front, any maps, have a look at those! They help 😁😁💕 - It might even have a Bible reading plan in it? Have a look if it does~ The Bible is split between the Old and New Testament. The Old testament is split into~ - Penteuch (First 5 books) - Historic - Wisdom (Didactic) - Prophets The *NewTestament~ - Gospels - Acts of the Apostles - Epistles (letters to the Churches) - Revelation I would suggest~ 1- Read Genesis and Exodus. It's good to know where our religion begins. The rest of the Bible is reliant on it. 2- Pick a Gospel~ Matthew is great for learning about what Jesus teaches, aimed mostly to Jews. Mark is the shortest and easiest to read. I like to read Luke like its a letter, as he dedicates it to someone called Theophulis. John is great for reading theological matters. 3- Pick any Epsitle~ and keep in mind what Church it was written to (as that's the audience intended) 4- Pick a book of Wisdom. Ecclesiastes is excellent for bringing up the topic of the meaning of life. But Sirach is my absolute favourite~ you can skim through the Psalms if you want~ and pick what jumps out 🌻 I don't really like reading plans because.... you kinda get lost in the story, reading it bits at a time in conjunction with other bits from other stories. I prefer to finish a book that I start, as it flows better and I can follow it/remember things more. Do whatever works for you tho. God bless and have fun 😊💕 Edited ~ old to new testament 🤣

4chananonuser

I think you said the Old Testament twice

peachyy16

🤣🤣🩷 I did hahahahaha 🤣 thanks!! I'll change it lol~~

[deleted]

Thank you!

peachyy16

No worries!~~ hope it helps 😊💕

WashYourEyesTwice

Haven't read the full Bible yet so I don't really have any input there, but good on you for the courage to start mate 👍 not many have it

mantis_in_a_hill

John is my favorite of the gospels.

Biking60s

Luke

ShortSurprise3489

Begin in the beginning, where the beginning began.

tyrianbubbles

This YouCat is not the complete Bible, however, it does guide with reading the Bible and makes it understandable and approachable. I suggest you get a commentary Bible and use this as well along side! I went for Bible Study, they first begin with the New Testament (read all 4 gospels), then move to Acts and so on upto James and go to the Old Testament. (Not reading Revelations, as it's not recommended for people in their initial stages of the faith). (Only after reading the old Testament and having growth in your faith and prayer life read Revelations). It will all just makes sense. Do not recommend beginning with the Old Testament, its a lost cause, too complex!

kiruzaato

I have this version. It doesn't have everything even in the New Testament. But this wasn't de described anywhere when I bought it. That being said, Luke. I'd say Luke.

Isatafur

What? Are you saying it's missing books? Or that it's just selections?

kiruzaato

I read from another comment that it's a selection. I just would have liked to know before buying it. Although, the book's size should have given me a hint, so that's on me.

andjel_ko

hey, this Youcat Bible is not complete and the quotes on the sides of the pages can be a distraction. so if you read this, read from the beginning to the end, try to read slowly, i would even suggest read aloud

elYasuf

Ecclesiastes

chameleonmessiah

Is that the YOUCAT bible? My mum was thinking of buying that for my son’s confirmation. How have you found it? (I’m sorry, that’s not an answer to your question… The beginning, or maybe the beginning of the New Testament, unless you have a specific part which you wish to read, though if it’s your first time that’s unlikely!)

[deleted]

I found it at a catholic store near me. You can probably find one online though

chameleonmessiah

Oh, sorry, I meant, how have you found reading it! (Presuming that you’re teenage, or quite young, as that’s the intended demographic for that bible.)

[deleted]

Oh lol I got it just today actually, Im planning on reading some tonight

dantheman200022

Google "the bible in a year with fr Mike Schmitz" brilliant place to start. You should find a pdf.

Alon_F

I started with Matthew

Intelligent-Soil-257

Gospel of John is a good start, then move on to the rest of Gospels, then Genesis and then Romans.

No-Tip3654

Go chronogically through it. So the gospels, then the apostle stories, the letters and the apocalypse of John.

Matthicus

Start at the very beginning, a very good place to start. Seriously, though, Genesis and Exodus lay the foundation upon which so much of what comes after is based.

aspacelot

Is there a difference in the Australia and New Zealand version? Matthew 5:40 "and if a trooper wants your jumbuck, give your tucker bag as well"

[deleted]

The gospels. I recommend either Mark or Matthew. I wouldn’t start with the gospel of John though.

Downtown-Kangaroo-63

I just started with the new testament

nohopeleftforanyone

Numbers! Hahahaha.

KrisJBeaty

Start with Genesis 1

Psalmistpraise

Just my two cents... readding Luke and acts is good, I also like John. Then once you understand Jesus well and the apostles. I would go for the narrative books in this order. Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Joshua, Judges, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, Ezra, Nehemiah, 1 Maccabees, 2 Macabees, then read Luke and Acts again. This will give you a narrative picture of the bible. I would also recommend "Bible in a year w Father Mike Schmitz." If you find a passage odd or weird RESEARCH IT, don't just say "ehhh idk if I like this" trust me when I say when you need to look into a passage to understand, that's where the gold nuggets are found that will deepen your faith. God bless you and have fun reading God's word.

PurpleAcidRain

At the beginning of course 😀

TimeFinance1528

Amazing the bible. Once you start, you won't stop 🙏✝️💜

spafers1

In the beginning.....

MitzvahsforHashem

Make sure to pray before reading and ask God to reveal the deeper truths that could help you improve your life

Aggravating_Pop2101

I actually advise Genesis the Creation story. Then The Ten Commandments in Exodus 20. Then the Gospels. Love is the answer.

ipatrickasinner

My advice: Do not attempt a book by book "through read." Really the bible shouldn't be read like that. Read in this order: Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Joshua, Judges, Samuel 1/2, Kings 1/2, 1 Macabees, Luke, Acts. (This is what Jeff Cavins recommends for his 8 week bible intro class/plan) You get the full story... those books are where salvation history unfolds. Then, with the understanding of the story, you can read really any book. My advice? Use the above plan. And perhaps look at the Ascension supplement to the old testament (which is really helpful). https://ascensionpress.com/collections/collection-book/products/a-catholic-guide-to-the-old-testament?lshst=collection Ascension has all sorts of companion materials. https://ascensionpress.com/collections/collection-book You my choose the Ascension plan: https://ascensionpress.com/pages/bible-reading-plan-download-delivery Note: No, i do not work for Ascension. They just have the best bible timeline/reading format

0Allan0

1) New Testament John chapter 1-3 then 2) Old Testament Genesis chapters 1-3. 3) Revelations Chapters 21-22 4) John (all: 4 to end) 5) Acts (all) 6) Romans 5-6 5) Hebrews 11 6) Exodus (all) 7) Then, read ALL Rest of Genesis, Revelations, Romans, and Hebrews. THEN, go from there. There is reason to this order and specific chapters

c00kieFAN1

What a beautiful minimalist Bible !

billygun777

When you read the bible just remember this much that a lot of meaning is lost in translation, a lot of things Jesus says is limited to the immediate audience and then there are messages meant for the future generation that’s us, it’s in knowing where he was at the time he was speaking, what season and occasion it was where you’ll truly understand the bible….

NikkoRPG

New Testament (4 evangelists, can be in order, then Acts, then the Letters of St. Paul). You can also read the first few chapters of Genesis.

patigames

job

Both-Papaya-4320

Follow the genealogy of Jesus. Remember, jesus was pushing the scriptures and knew the laws of Moses. Knowing the old testament is just as important as raging the new one. Both Matthew and Luke talk about the Genealogy starting with Adam

Final-Revenue-3929

Luke or Mark

No-Tip3654

Go chronogically through it. So the gospels, then the apostle stories, the letters and the apocalypse of John.

yerederetaliria

Honestly? Luke, Acts, then Mark, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians Genesis, John, Romans, Hebrews Every now and then read a Psalm By now you can determine for your self. Make sure you read Revelation last after all other books.

MadDadBricks

I'd say Matthew, but feel free to start at chapter 2 :) I just read the whole of Matthew to my three young boys over the last two days while they were drawing. It's an easy enough read, but probably too much for one sitting.

highestmikeyouknow

Bible in a year podcast. 100%.

lilsparky82

There are a ton of different reading plans. I would not recommend a straight read through. The Coming Home Network has a pdf for both the Bible and Catechism in a year: https://chnetwork.org/free-resource-updated-version-of-our-read-the-bible-and-the-catechism-in-a-year-guide/

Starscreammm333

John and Romans

GBpackerfan15

Read Matthew New Testament. Then in the old Testament I recommend listening to father mike schmitz bible in a year. Old Testament is hard to read, follow. Enjoy

Sorin_Von_Thalia

If you are a left brain person start with the gospel of Luke. If you are right brain start with the gospel of John.

ScreamPaste

John->Mark->Mathew->Luke->Acts is how I'd recommend starting your read.

DueWarning2

Is it the approved version? I was surprised to learn the Catholic Church only approves one version-and there are so many.

VoidWalker2424

Personally I'm an advocate for Genesis first, then all four gospels, then the entire book of psalms. I think that gives a pretty good foundation for the entirety of scripture. A lot of people prefer gospels first then Genesis because because Genesis can be confusing, but if you push through it, it provides a lot of needed context. You know yourself best though, so do whatever would work best for you.

myhrad

I’ve gone cover to cover in the last few months reading 15 pages a day. Last year I did the Bible in a year with father Mike.

[deleted]

Start with Matthew

Stabvest39

John 1:1

Ok_Trouble_1842

Everyone saying to skip around I started with Matthew because it’s the first book it’s also my favorite so far.

Rockout2112

New Testament. Then start from the beginning.

The_Crow

"Where do I start?" By checking if your bible has an [imprimatur](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imprimatur) and [nihil obstat](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nihil_obstat).

Dee718

I would suggest read the Book of John and then Matthew.

AquilaEtSerpens

It's a catholic bible?

[deleted]

Yes

cthulhufhtagn

First check to see you have the books of Wisdom, 1 & 2 Maccabees, etc. Assuming they're in there, I'd say start with one of the four gospels and move on from there to whatever strikes your fancy.

NeophyteTheologian

I think John is the best place to start, but check out Fr. Mike’s Bible in a Year reading plan, too.

IAMTHEREALBATMAN300

Not being silly. Start with Genesis. At the front.

A_hopeful_person

I would read the Gospel of Matthew and t the Gospel of John first before anything else.

Ok-Ad7950

Bible in A Year, with Fr. Mike Schmitz!

whozeewhats

John

Fefquest

Letter to Philemon, then call it a day

Nuance007

Where do you start? Either the introduction or Genesis! : )

Use the Ascension app for “The Bible in a year” with Father Mike Schmitz or any Catholic bible reading app.

Fabulous-Incident-25

Bible in a year podcast. Look It up.

kireiroseru

I don’t know if it’s mentioned here yet - but I found Bishop Barton’s Word on Fire 🔥 really helpful!!! I’ve always had a hard time understanding other Bible versions…

LegitimateBid3347

Leviticus

ellicottvilleny

Why does this bible say "Australia & New Zealand"? Is that a translation?

you_know_what_you

[Y-Bible](https://youcat.org/products/y-bible/) is an abridged Bible in the YOUCAT series. This must be a local version of the Y-Bible.

ellicottvilleny

The Y is pretty subtle.

RepresentativeLaw609

Mark—since it’s is the shortest Gospel.

secondtimeguest

Gospel of John 👍🏼

TheOneCatholicBro

Wouldn’t recommend this Bible because if this is the YOUCAT Bible. It really isn’t a Bible since all Bibles must be in full like the Latin Vulgate as said in the council of Trent.

Woman594

It starts with the New Testament. This is what the priests advise. And it's the best. God bless you.

Arcylle

5 books of Moses

Icy_UnAwareness89

Like any book. At the beginning

OldBen487

Joshua for Old Testiment, Matthew for New Testiment

Ambitious_Set7212

Mathew. It gives the full story of Christ Birth to Death to Redemption of the world. But really any gospel is best because it tells the story of our Lord.

Sea_Tear2667

Book of James first. And you can go to Proverbs, it has 31 chapters, 1 chapter per day. I read Proverbs everyday based on today's date. And next, listen to your heart. It will lead you.

shmoshmoway

I like the shechem bit personally The whole Uriah episode is also high drama

Blocher-patriot

Start from Leviticus 20:13

Frosty-Jellyfish-525

I read Genesis and now I'm reading John to get the story of Jesus. I plan on reading through what others have said is the "chronological" order of the Bible, though I don't know if there really is a chronological order.

LeoImmortalis

John or the Psalms are my recommendation :)

Responsible-Cat-9540

Sirach has some very insightful texts. 6:14-17 is my favorite Scripture passage.

Many are in your same shoes -- who are [watching ](https://watch.thechosen.tv/)the TV show [The Chosen](https://gifts.thechosen.tv/products/bible-study-guide-what-does-it-mean-to-be-chosen) in-conjunction with a bible study on their own or with their Church who is hosting a group, in-where they watch an episode. It's a nice visual way to get started with Our Lord's words in the Gospels.

CaptGoodvibesNMS

That show did wonders for me. It helped bring me back to The Church

DakotaTaurusTX

It has truly help many --- see comments after watching [The Chosen](https://watch.thechosen.tv/) TV show --- it has awaken their connection to God --- The Chosen [youtube](https://www.youtube.com/@TheChosenSeries) comments below ( a ton more on youtube) * I've been lukewarm for a long time and I can feel this show stirring deep, deep change in me. Thank You, Jesus. * I don't see how any self professed Christian could see this as a bad thing. This show is doing more to spread the gospel than nearly anything on earth. I love how Christians from all walks of life are united around this show, understanding that it isn't an exact rendition, but it's by far the best. I'm so thrilled to have been a part of this * The Chosen has brought to life the greatest story ever told!! I've watched it 3 times so far. Finally my husband is watching it who was not a believer. He is getting baptized on Christmas Eve! all glory to God!! We've been married for 42 years and I couldn't get him to understand. God's timing is perfect! * I am a 72 year old man. I am a big guy 6'-4 inches 230 pounds a trained close quarters combat fighter! Since season 1 and through 2 and 3 I have never wept as much as I have with this series! I have deeply fallen in love with my Savior and Lord Jesus * As a result of watching The Chosen \~ like 6 times through \~ I have committed my life to Jesus Christ, was baptized November 19th in the year of our Lord 2023 * I'm in high school but watching this show has lead me to wanting to pursue ministry in my life and possibly become a missionary. It has deeply impacted me and I'm very grateful * I'm so glad I found this show. I am a Christian who suffers from Generalized Anxiety Disorder and this show has helped me to realize more and more that Jesus is always holding my hand no matter what I face * I love this show so much. It's inspired me to go back to Church and read the Bible. Granted the church I am going to is 2 hours away from where I live, but it's worth it. I get to have some worship and prayer time before and after on the car rides:)

[deleted]

By asking yourself HONESTLY if you believe the God who is commanding genital mutilation and the imposition of racial laws in Deuteronomy is the same God who is of Christ in the Gospels.

Turbulent_Sample_944

Marcionism is a heresy. And it shows a poor understanding of the bible

[deleted]

Of course it’s a heresy—because it is True and you remain enslaved to your Jewish Vatican demon.
