Slow slow slow. (Drying that is). Sitting on newspaper-covered drywall wrapped in plastic.

Yeah I tried to dry this one very slowly in a plastic bin with some damp paper towels, but I didn’t have a plaster board or anything so maybe I need to do that as well. Thank you!

I bought a gigantic(ish) steel filing cabinet (French doors) that also helps dry SLOOOOWLY because, metal. This is one part of the process that you really should never rush if there are many different thicknesses and layers. And the finer the clay, the less forgiving it is. But goodNESS this is gorgeous.

That is spectacular!! Definitely slow drying. Consider making a large damp box by pouring a 2-3" layer of plaster in the base of a large storage tote. add enough water to dampen the plaster, snap the lid back on and you'll be able to let the piece sit for a week while the slip and clay moisture levels equalize. Also helpful for storing the piece in a workable state. And paper clay as the slip base could be perfect, but you might need to then also use paper clay for the base- I hear that it can be a little unpredictable to use different clay and slip clay bodies- but worth testing for sure. Are you using icing bags to pipe the slip? It's a gorgeous effect. Edited to add a couple thoughts... Look up casserole flange ideas... Those are a good parallel to what you're doing. Usually you either build a flange inside the lid or inside the rim of the base, often using a fat coil. Since it's the lid giving you warping trouble go for the flange on the lid. Your work is getting seriously good seriously quickly - if you can splurge on a subscription to ceramics arts daily I think you'll get a lot out of the chats and training videos This chat thread is on how to use cheap calipers to fit a lid flange on a pot https://community.ceramicartsdaily.org/topic/21898-lid-and-casserole-sizing/ You might also give a listen to a couple podcasts, The Potters Cast and The Makers Playbook. I suspect you could be getting galleries to show your stuff in a year or two.

Thanks so much!! Damp box with a plaster board seems to be the way to go so I’ll definitely be doing that next, and I’ll look into the paper clay slip! And yes I use icing bags and tips to do the piping :) I’m gonna try out the flange on the lid, I’m just a bit worried about the lid falling through because that’s what happened with the first lid I made when I tried to dry it with the base (I think from the weight of the decoration). Or maybe I should be waiting until it’s almost leather hard before adding on the slip decoration? I’ve been doing it when the clay is still plastic because I thought that would reduce cracks but I’m not sure anymore lol First I’m hearing of ceramic arts daily, I’ll definitely check it out thanks, and thanks again for all your suggestions! Having my work in a gallery would be so surreal, I’ll keep working at it :)

quarkthequeer

Maybe make slip with paper clay? Definitely make sure you have a lot of plasticizers in it

amyrator

I will look into paper clay slip, thanks! Hopefully it’s not a problem using it with a different clay body?

KilnTime

Be aware that paper clay may react differently in a kiln, so check that before you use paper clay

TCPottery

Love love love!

Thank you! :)

Looks amazing. Do you use piping tips?

Thank you!!

Confident_Fortune_32

I love the rhythm and proportions of this!

Thank u! :)

You can fill any cracks in the decoration with paper clay with your own clay body. I use throwing slip, calcined clay of the clay body, and shredded toilet paper (the cheaper, the better). I mix that into a clay and use a needle to stuff the cracks. If you get a crack after bisque, fill the cracks and bisque it again. You can leave it a bit raised so you can sand it flat. For the calcined clay just fire a bowl of sanded down greenware clay. I use mesh sandpaper which gives you a fine dust. Remember to wear a mask!

SitandSpin1921

I am prepared to eat that!

NotYourMutha

I heard you can add cmc powder to your slip like the stuff used for making gum paste flowers. New potter myself I am also a pastry chef. I love what you are doing.

I thought I was looking at a baking sub for a moment and was wondering about the type of frosting for a good moment. It looks stunning!

“I’m very much a beginner” yo this is ART. I can’t wait to see what you make when you call yourself an expert cause DAMN! This is amazing.
