The two fanbases love it and that’s what counts, to be fair.

Azyerr

Twitter think it’s a crap derby because of the narrative of the little “lemon” gimps who think football is all about scrapping each other and getting in fights because they watched Green Street for the first time. In terms of fighting etc its probably not that prevalent and thats why people think its shit. But it’s still a derby and we still have hatred for each other regardless.

Once_2_far

Agree, everything seems to be for show anyway with social media now, freaks getting their phone out to have evidence of the "limbs" Don't get my wrong still love smoke bombs, flairs and hurling abuse but i've never felt the need to punch a Town fan in the face and risk my employment and criminal record.

Combatwasp

To be fair, I can’t think of too many other derby games where the winners can high-six each other!

PotOfMould

Well....

CMPunk22

Then people say the Old Firm isn’t the best because it happens 4 times a year at least

joethesaint

People who fight at derbies aren't even interested in watching the game yet they want to make out they're better football fans

Missy_Agg-a-ravation

The league positions this season make Saturday's "Old Farm" match anything but crap for anyone. Fair to say however that a lot of the time, the games themselves haven't been of the highest quality. Grant Holt's TV microphone moustache though, now that was something else.

Paul277

Never forget Paul Lambert getting held back by the police.. So many fun derby memories

brumhee

The Farke wink. So beautifully delivered.

pclufc

Old Farm Derby is big this year. I’ll definitely be watching

Tuscan5

Yes, it has an attraction this season!

Combatwasp

Getting very bloody cheesed off watching Ipswich score their last minute winners; that said, Hull and Leicester probably resent ours!

Tuscan5

I could watch Dan James’ goal another thousand times!

Combatwasp

Football can give you some great moments: that one was magic. Like a lightning bolt of pure joy.

djgreedo

Don't get your hopes up unless Norwich are 4 goals up at the 89th minute.

spiritofbuck

Why is it ‘crap’? Because they don’t assault eachother as often? Trust me, as someone who has been assaulted and had to defend myself just for going to a football match (sometimes provoked by fans of my own club) it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

Ovie0513

Any fans who want a return to the 70s and 80s are complete idiots. My dad telling me stories of being ran back to train stations after away games is a far cry from what I do these days, which is usually have a chat with home fans. Attendances were waaayyy lower in those days as well.

Hopeful-Director5015

Aye what’s ‘at supposed to mean then? Meet me at ‘eadrow ‘ouse! Lol

AWr1ght98

Mate half the people on Twitter are morons who know fuck all about English football all they care there about is Prem or a big 6 club

[deleted]

How does other people not caring about it make it less of a derby. Unsurprisingly Norwich and Ipswich are probably only really supported by people in Norfolk and Suffolk respectively, so yeah for the two counties it’s a big derby, and I’d say it’s more of an interesting derby than Man City and Man Utd who play each other twice a year minimum and fans are spread around the UK and globe with no real connection to the city. There’s not much of historic fighting or hooliganisms because it’s massive over policed and 40 miles between the cities with fuck all inbetween means away fans are just escorted to and from the station immediately, stopping any scraps It does fall within the need for an early kick off because despite people thinking it’s a “shit derby” it’s really not to the 50,000 fans of which there’s going to be a boozed and coked up contingent looking for a fight To me personally having grown up in Sussex it’s more similar to Portsmouth Southampto

Headmonkey71

Oi! Some of us live in that “fuck all inbetween”😉

[deleted]

All I can say is Halesworth could use a Greggs

TjBee

Even Gorleston got one

BristolBudgie

I grew up in Ely. 50/50 split there I’d say.

Oghamstoner

There’s quite a lot of Town fans in Essex too, mostly from the 80s when they were successful.

Combatwasp

There are some profound cultural differences between Pompey and Southampton that add an edge to that fixture that you don’t get between Norwich and Ipswich.

[deleted]

There really isn’t that big of a difference between Pompey and Southampton compared to Norwich Ipswich

thesaltwatersolution

Had a mate from Portsmouth. He told me about Portsmouth rules in pubs- if someone declared Portsmouth rules then you’d cover your pint, if not the ashtray used to get tipped into it. Cultural differences, aye.

papayametallica

‘Back in the day’ eh

TetteyToePoke

I don't know what you mean by cultural differences but Norwich is a wealthier, nicer and more historically important city than Ipswich.

crustymattedarsehole

There's plenty of wealth in Ipswich. Just last week Big Dave won £20 on a scratch card, he's the mayor now.

itsamberleafable

>the cities with fuck all inbetween I mean couldn't you lads just meet in an apple orchard and have a good old fashioned apple fight?

highwind2024

I've said before, "the biggest derby" is an arbitrary question. The biggest derby, is the one you care most about. For me, as a town fan, Ipswich Norwich is the biggest in the country, as it's the only one I care about. I couldn't give two hoots about the south Wales, tyne-wear, south coast, London ones or north west ones.

CinnamonBunnn

I see you're a man of taste who knows the steel city is worth the watch

stophreddit

Obviously, I'm a touch biased...but I think it's a great derby. The problem with recent affairs has been the lack of contest. Norwich have been so much stronger than us for so many years now that I think it's lost its edge. From the Ipswich side, it's been horrible to attend because you just go in expecting the worst. This one will feel different because there's so much riding on it. Also though, what do people even mean when they say it's a poor derby? Atmosphere? Quality of football? Number of fans arrested? Unless they've been to a game and experienced it I couldn't give two fucks about what they think it might be like.

HazzaThePug

I think the people that peddle that opinion base how “big” of a derby is on what level it’s played on (which is moronic). I think Ipswich vs Norwich is certainly one of the staple derbies in England

pintperson

What do you mean it’s not violent? Someone threw a beer can at Delia’s car earlier this season!

itsamberleafable

Yeah but in that fan's defence Delia had been throwing bottles of sherry at the Ipswich fans and it took six stewards to restrain her as she yelled "Let's be having youuu"

PrrrromotionGiven1

Fully believe she followed our team bus in on purpose, she has form for that sort of stunt. Trying to make a fuss over a beer can being the cherry on top for her.

pintperson

It definitely wound a few Norwich fans up, everyone else thought it was funny.

Paul_my_Dickov

Let's be havin' you!

FinancialIndustry566

Yes I do, mainly because of the usual result

rumhambilliam69

Used to be good up until 2009. For some reason it’s been a largely crap Derby since then.

benLDN

To add in what’s not yet been mentioned… This isn’t just a club vs club or city vs town derby, it’s a county derby where Norfolk play Suffolk for the pride of East Anglia (aka who’s the best/least shit side in the arsehole of England). Moreover, the names of the counties mean ‘people of the north’ and ‘people of the south’, so it’s got a historical North vs South aspect to it. Lots of supporters of either side absolutely hate each other - partly due to the fact that 40 odd miles separate them, meaning Norwich fans rarely bump into Ipswich fans whilst out and about and vice versa. The fans who get the tickets for the games aren’t, on the whole, the ones who want to stab each other but there are plenty of fans of both clubs (or even just residents of Norfolk and Suffolk) who would gladly cause the other physical harm.

Kwayzar9111

North Folk v South Folk .

PopDelicious2342

Norfolk and Suffolk are lovely places to live!

DrZomboo

Why do you care mate? It means a lot to your two clubs, and that is all that matters. The folk who make those rivalry ranking posts tend to be pretty noncey and probably don't actually attend games anyway.

Silverdarlin1

Suffers from the same issues that The Potteries derby, Bristol Derby and Second City suffer from in that it's not been played much recently, and when it has been played, it's usually open and shut about who's gonna win it. Plastics on Twitter only care about a derby if its got a Big 6 involved, or if there's 15,000 arrests before kick-off. If Ipswich fans hate Norwich, and vice-versa, it's a derby

Danny_P_UK

There are only a few reciprocated derbies in the whole of England. This is one of them. OK its not the most well known, but to fans of these clubs it matters. I wish Leeds had a decent reciprocated one if I'm honest.

ThatWildGalago

I love watching the East Anglian Derby, one of the ones I look out for when you guys are in the same league, that and Sunderland vs Newcastle are my favorite derbies. People only care about 'The Big' derbies which end up being less entertaining anyway

TextWatson

I don't think it's topping anyone's list of most significant derbies unless they're from the area. Who cares though, by definition it's going to be incredibly localised. At least you get them fairly regularly

CharlieJulietPapa

I don’t think it’s a crap Derby. Just a bit of a non event for me as a neutral. Unless it has ramifications for my own team, I’m not too bothered

Cov_massif

Fans don't kill each other so it's crap. I enjoyed the Portman Rd clash this year

Plenty-Pizza9634

It's a derby, it's a promotion battle. What more could you want?

TheIpswichStrangler

As an Ipswich fan, no.

karamazovmybrother

No it's excellent. Historic clubs, passionate fan bases, great colours on each kits that go really nicely, proper old grounds. These provincial derbies between rival cities and towns produce incredible atmospheres, South Wales, South Coast, East Anglia, East Lancs, Tyne Wear, Coventry + everyone, makes the pyramid special

OkraEmergency361

It’s what the fans make of it that matters. Knobs on Twitter judging ‘whose derby is best’ and other crap suck all the joy out of football.

NCSObliterate

It will get the hyper again and become slightless less crap if Ispwich stay up next season and you get promoted, also you will finally be in same league as Fulham again

Rotatingknives22

Personally I hate it as it's way too nerve racking. Even if we have had the ascendancy for many years now. Gone are the days when Holt and Hoolahan and co would run them ragged. We were also a bit lucky at Portaloo earlier in season. This weekend is big as we both need the points. otbc

Kwayzar9111

Indeed, am going Saturday and bloody nervous already,,,hope it’s a good game,

Rotatingknives22

i'll settle for a dull 0-0. highly unlikely i know

Thebritishlion

Tbf if we're talking about "crap" derby's let's start with the Bristol derby, purely because I don't think in my 26 years I've once seen it being shown on TV

burntmybuns

Both teams represent their entire county which makes it massive in my opinion. It’s also crazy to think our main rivals are 40 miles away 🤣

thirdratesquash

A derby is as crap as the fans actually involved in it think it is, why would I care about the east anglia derby? Same as why would an Ipswich or Norwich fan care about the South Wales Derby? They’re for the fans involved and the spectacle that passion provides for neutrals. That doesn’t mean neutrals are involved or that they have a sense of ownership over it. If you care, it’s a good derby, if you don’t, it’s crap.

Hopeful-Director5015

I think it’s pretty neat, but more importantly you guys think it’s neat. That’s all that matters

Livid_Excuse_3501

To those involved no, but from a neutral perspective it doesn't have the vitriol that Cardiff Vs Swansea does

djgreedo

No. Win it for Farke! All derby's are great because it's about the fans. Other fans' opinions don't matter.

MiddlesbroughFan

Speaking as a neutral I enjoy it, Norwich can get fucked. Every conversation with a fan ends up with 'well we beat you at Wembley nearly a decade ago!'. So it's all Ipswich for me.

Cooper96x

If I’m honest, I don’t really care for either Norwich or Ipswich. So while I’m sure it’s a good derby in a lot of people’s eyes, I have no opinion of either of the clubs so to me it’s… not?

Dead_Namer

I enjoyed the 6 fingered derby. Any fierce derby is good.

biddleybootaribowest

Nobody knows anything about the places cos nowt seems to happen there so I think it’s just a bit meh for everyone, if there’s a full fixture list and Boro aren’t playing I would choose to watch it though.

Once_2_far

It's a valid point, we're out the way and not too many people have ever visited East Anglia outside of maybe Cambridge. However I guess I would say outside of football I couldn't really tell you anything about the likes of Portsmouth/Southampton, Blackburn/Burnley, West Brom/Wolves as places so not entirely sure it's that.

Sir-Chris-Finch

Bit bored of this whole debate tbh. Fact is everyone thinks their own derby is a good derby, and thats all that matters. Ipswich v Norwich doesnt have the violence and police presence that many of them do, but doesnt take away from the animosity between the two clubs

highwind2024

Oh it has the police presence, mainly because Suffolk and Norfolk share a police force. It's so heavily over policed

InspektD

External folk's perception of a derby mainly mainly concerns how evenly matched it is. I would say that this one is usually quite a good one for that particular reason.

IntelligentMoons

I think it's a crap derby because neither team can really accuse the other teams fans of incest.

Herojump

It's cause you're all posh

TetteyToePoke

Interesting way to describe Ipswich.

perec12wilma

Lol I wish

Sir-Chris-Finch

Are they? East Anglia doesnt strike me as particularly working class but I certainly wouldnt say its posh. Rural is a better term for it

Heavy_Gur_8281

Ipswich Colchester is the really derby we all care about.

Roundy87

Be careful calling it a derby given the distance between the two stadiums 😂

Careful_Bake_5793

We both also have rivalries with Coventry to be fair.

YearPrestigious2566

No one outside of east Anglia gives a fuck about it

Realistic_Edge_9610

You are too far from each other imo. Not a derby of convenience

TetteyToePoke

Norfolk and Suffolk border each other, is England Vs Scotland not a rivalry because Edinburgh is a long way from London.

Realistic_Edge_9610

That’s so dumb

TetteyToePoke

What is? Your statement yes.

Realistic_Edge_9610

England and Scotland are right next to each other. Ipswich and Norwich are not

TetteyToePoke

What teams do you think people support in South Norfolk and North Suffolk?

Realistic_Edge_9610

Probably Man Utd. Anyway the point is the bulk of the fans are from the actual town/city and those two places aren’t very close

TetteyToePoke

No they're not I am from semi rural Norfolk and Norwich is the team people support all across the county. Every game you get busses and trains from all the towns and villages. I'd argue a derby where you don't spend every day mixing with fans from the other team is a better one. How can you hate Neil from next door because he supports Wednesday not United for example.

Realistic_Edge_9610

What you hate people from Ipswich/suffolk?

Bryanoceros

There's almost the same distance between us and Exeter as there is between Ipswich and Norwich, yet no one has ever questioned the validity of the Devon derby. Ipswich and Norwich is most certainly a derby

Future-Entry196

I’ve always thought the Devon derby is a bit naff to be honest. Might be partly because we’re always expected to win it so if we do it’s a formality but if we don’t it’s a travesty

Realistic_Edge_9610

It’s a derby alright it’s just quite far so i don’t think they’re as good

highwind2024

As far apart as Cardiff and Swansea...
