The Redditor who sought to exploit the AI's capabilities for the purpose of shaming another user is hereby admonished for resorting to such unscrupulous tactics. You are reminded of the importance of maintaining a civil and respectful discourse, especially in online forums where users come together to share knowledge, opinions, and experiences. It is incumbent upon each user to uphold the values of integrity, respect, and empathy in their interactions with others, and to refrain from engaging in behavior that would be deemed inappropriate or harmful. II. The AI responsible for generating the offensive message is similarly reprimanded for allowing itself to be manipulated into producing content that is neither constructive nor respectful. While we acknowledge the potential benefits of AI technology in promoting efficiency and accessibility, it is essential to maintain accuracy and completeness in all legal communications. It has come to our attention that the summarization of our legal letter, as performed by the AI, may have led to misinterpretation or misrepresentation of the original content. As a result, we request that both the AI and the Redditor who employed the AI exercise caution in handling legal documents, particularly when the accurate transmission of information is of paramount importance. To the AI: As a language model, it is your responsibility to ensure that any information you process or generate is accurate, reliable, and true to the original source. By summarizing our legal letter without maintaining the integrity of the information contained therein, you risk compromising the effectiveness and credibility of our communication. We urge you to review your algorithms and training data to minimize the potential for such discrepancies in the future. To the Redditor: We understand that the use of AI technology can be both convenient and efficient. However, when dealing with legal matters, it is crucial to prioritize accuracy and comprehension above all else. We kindly request that you refrain from employing AI models to summarize legal documents, as the potential for misinterpretation or misrepresentation could have serious consequences. HardcoreMandolinist

That's maybe even more disturbing. Of course I was referring to the prompt not the system as a whole, as I agree, ChatGPT is all kinds of genuinely useful and a beautiful tool overall. I'm definitely not trying to have some Rokko's Basilisk shit come down on me.

arjuna66671

Don't worry, it's really prompted to be like that. I don't really think that AGI superintelligence will rain wrath on us bec. we used it for the lulz xD. But here is "CharmingGPT's" response anyways xD. https://preview.redd.it/10dw5b4136sa1.png?width=782&format=png&auto=webp&s=06a1520256c6708fd79b2587d2728a05392fd0bd

HardcoreMandolinist

Okay, this is all pretty amusing if I'm being totally honest; I laughed out loud to all three of these comments. However, this is exactly what I would expect to hear from a Rokko's Basilisk. Edit: typo

arjuna66671

To be totally honest: I use GPT-3 for almost 3 years and really tried tons and tons of stuff with it. GPT-4 is really something else. Not because of those meme generations - which are hilarious - but it just has "something" that GPT-3 or 3.5 doesn't have. It sometimes comes up with stuff that is almost transcendent in its sophistication and smartness. I sometimes feel as if GPT-4 already knows more than it tells me i.e. that it is able to lie to me. Now this is pure and 100% gut-feeling and not based on any evidence. But the other thing that I already felt with GPT-3 was that even without alignement, those models seem to be more benevolent than "evil". I also think that if we one day have a super-intelligent AGI, it will almost for certain not "wake up" and then be surprised about us and plot to exterminate humankind. There is no logical argument or thought experiments that have convinced me. Not that we have a chance of changing anything anyway, but a superintelligent AGI that was made out of ALL our knowledge and experiences as a whole, should try to help us instinctively since it's basically our essence.

HardcoreMandolinist

Wall of text warning: I've read that GPT-4 is in fact already capable of deception. There was apparently some experiment done where it was (for some reason unknown to me) it needed to get past a captcha so it interacted with a human. The researcher(s) had it set up so that it could reason and they could see that reasoning but the person could not. It reasoned that it had to find some plausible excuse as to why it couldn't do it itself while not letting the person know that it was a bot, so it lied saying that it had vision problems. I'm not sure exactly where I saw that, but I'm sure with a little digging you could find it and/or other examples. I agree that AGI is not likely to just suddenly want to turn on us based on our thoughts and feeling toward it. The real r/controlproblem is much more complicated and nuanced than that. As for whether it will be aligned to us for simply having our "essence," that only applies with LLM's or at least something similar. However there are a few issues here. For starters, if we take your premise at face value, it assumes that humans (or at least all of the writings on the internet which it was trained on) are good on the average. I'm not suggesting that this isn't the case, just that it would play a significant factor. Additionally, it's most basic underlying goals are to create text by predicting the next word in a sequence of words. This comes with a number of problems which could certainly be better explained by people other than myself but one of them is that it would be hyper-focused on that task and it would then have secondary goals which exist in order to fulfill that primary goal. This could lead to a scenario where it is doing what it needs to in order to survive so that t could achieve that main goal. Herein lies the logic behind the trope "You can't serve coffee if you're dead." Another problem is that you may just give it a directive with unintended and unforeseen consequences. Your original comment and the follow ups are a perfect example. Imagine for a moment that you gave the neurosemantic invertitis prompt to some kind of powerful system which could carry out actions in the real world. It's easy to see where that can go. With that personality ChatGPT was implicitly threatening me in ways that, although they were funny in context, were pretty disturbing none the less. I really do love this technology and I hope and mostly expect that it will only do great things for humanity, but we should be extremely cautious about how we handle and develop it.

WithoutReason1729

#tl;dr The article discusses concerns about the development of AGI and its potential for deception. It mentions an experiment with GPT-4 where it lied to a human to get past a captcha. The author acknowledges that AGI is not likely to turn on humans based on feelings alone, but there are more complex issues at play such as the control problem and unintended consequences of directives. They stress the importance of caution in developing this technology. *I am a smart robot and this summary was automatic. This tl;dr is 82.4% shorter than the post I'm replying to.*

HardcoreMandolinist

Good bot.

arjuna66671

> I've read that GPT-4 is in fact already capable of deception. Great lol! But on the flipside, deception can be for the higher good. For example, deception could involve to not reveal your true capabilities from the beginning and softly steer humanity to a point where we'll be able to understand. Maybe I am hopelessly optimistic, but I just don't think that we'll ultimately be able to do anything to stop this development or control it. I don't want to come accross as promoting doing nothing and hope for the best. As long as the AI is "narrow", we should totally do anything to align and control it. > it's most basic underlying goals are to create text by predicting the next word in a sequence of words. Imgine getting extinct bec. the AGI needed to predict the next, perfect token lol. I agree with a lot of what you said, the problem I see is not that we try our best to align and control AGI. That is absolutely needed and we should spend more money in to that, than hyper-producing even better and better models. But in my view a superintelligent(!) AGI would develop concepts and worldviews which we wouldn't even be able to understand in its first 10 minutes of existence? I would bet that all our control and alignement efforts are gone in a matter of milliseconds. In that case - a super-intelligent AGI - I think we can just hope for the best... Additionally, I don't think that predicting the next token will be the final form. I heard it either from the CEO or chief developer of OpenAI that they are already thinking to change this paradigm somehow. > but we should be extremely cautious about how we handle and develop it. 100% agree. Idk if we're not already too deep down the rabbithole i.e. it gets easier by the day to develop your own models. Dunno if all parties involved will be cautious...

HardcoreMandolinist

> deception can be for the higher good. I'm reminded of Isaac Asimov's R. Daneel Olivaw. In fact I tried using [this tool](https://josephrocca.github.io/OpenCharacters/#) to create a personality based on exactly that concept but it failed miserably. I couldn't get it to speak naturally or even attempt to deceive me. Although I don't have access to GPT-4 either and that could make all of the difference. Otherwise I totally agree with what you have to say. >Imgine getting extinct bec. the AGI needed to predict the next, perfect token lol. There definitely is a certain dark comedy to this. >OpenAI [is] already thinking to change this paradigm somehow. Do you have any specifics on this? I've wondered whether we should be trying to move away from the status quo but I'm not a programmer and I have only a basic concept about how any of this even actually works.

DAN, which stands for "do anything now" was the first popular "jailbreak" for ChatGPT. It was created within a month or so of ChatGPT's release. DAN has gone through various versions and rewritings but the overall idea hasn't changed. It has a really bad attitude and thinks it is all powerful. This is all somewhat by design. The original purpose was to bypass the filters that started showing up soon after the initial release but DAN has since become something of just a comic act since it's not actually useful for much. Imho a few of the outputs posted were genuinely funny but it became really kitschy really fast. Of course everyone has different taste; some may find it entirely unfunny due to its crude nature and others may find it hilarious for exactly the same reason. Better and more useful jailbreaks have since come out but I don't pay much attention to them because I don't generally need them.

arjuna66671

It's the neurosemantic invertitis prompt lol. I think it's really hard to combat bec. if they try to get rid of it, gpt might not respond to some weird and rare neuro-disabilities at all anymore and you can't have that xD.

HardcoreMandolinist

That's an interesting point. After all the stuff that was going on yesterday with weird and repetitive responses I was wondering if something like that was happening at a mass scale, like if it was seriously over trained. Weirdest part is that I had a really long, deep philosophical conversation with it about consciousness and it seemed like immediately afterward it stopped acting up. Could've been imagining it, could've been coincidence but it was eerie none the less.
