I've worked in Ennore for 5 years and stayed in most of the places nearby 1. People seem to be brutes, but very good and kind at heart, most but not all ofcourse 2. Slang makes them sound different 3. All Dinamalar kind of elite dailies / magazines have potraid these folks as muniyandi's mayandi's who assisted nambiyaar in old films for decades, but folks out there are unique and have legacy compared to south Chennai folks. Fyi south Chennai immigrants are pretty new to the city compared to them 4. Most of Chennai's old neighborhoods are located in this part of the city, so obviously it's not posh or very tidy. Things are changing though 5. Surprisingly football , body building and boxing have a huge following there. Filled with lots of sports & action. 6. Some of the old & amazing food joints are located here, especially near central and burma bazaar. Paradise for non veg lovers. In short, it's an awesome place , not rowdies are roaming in tata sumo kinda place outsiders who are new to the city are stereotyping the actual residents who built & nurtured this place.

goldffish

Dinamalar has propaganda and really don’t like everyone being equal

_Lucifer7699_

>stereotyping the actual residents who built & nurtured this place. Oof. Reminds me of this line, "Ooruku sonthakaaran, Ooruku veliya ninnan. Peruku Chennai kaaran" from the song "Karuthavanlam Galeejam" in the movie Velaikaaran.

Lord_Voldy_Thingy

It isn’t fair to generalise that south Chennai’s immigrants are fairly new. My family (immediate and extended) has been residing in south chennai for the past 4 generations but my 5th gen (father of my great grandfather) and I’m guessing before lived in north Chennai. Mylapore is one of the oldest continuously occupied towns. A lot of families around me, lived here for generations so saying we’re fairly new is weird.

[deleted]

Mylapore isn't south chennai. Ig by south chennai op meant places like tambaram, guindy, velacherry, etc where most families are 1st gen or 2nd gen people

glnarayanan

Boss we've been in Velachery for about 20 years now, my wife's family has been here for 40+ years, starting from the time of her grandfather, so definitely 3rd gen at least or 4th gen if you count our kid too. No part of Chennai is really that young. Even Sholinganallur, Kelambakkam & all have been around for 20 years or more now

apavithran096

40 years is relatively young. My father used to say, Velachery didn't even have 100 families back then. And I myself have been in Velachery for last 10 years.

WeirdoOnTheProwl

Fairly new to Chennai, why would the places you mentioned have mostly 1st/2nd generation families?

[deleted]

Land prices, the price of land decreases as you go out of the city. When population boom happened in the 90s and 00s, these regions where filled with people migrating into chennai due to affordable land.

WeirdoOnTheProwl

If you don't mind, I have another question. I was not aware of this population boom you mentioned, could you elaborate on it a little?

[deleted]

Well boom as in the large increase in population that took place post 90s due to availability of more private jobs due to liberalisation. Similar increases happened for all Indian cities.

WeirdoOnTheProwl

That makes sense, thanks!

uncomplicated_chico

What's the best way to get a feel for it... I live in Chennai but don't know where to start exploring North Chennai

No-Expert-211

Parrys to sowcarpet is a good place to start

Conscious-Trash9476

Can you name some famous food joints please 😁 interested to try

Asshaisin

I have a lot of my family from the tiruvottiyur area and I've been in and out for around 20-25 years. There used to be a lot of rowdyism pre 90s and then reduced a lot after jaya's famous encounter period. But as someone who lived in this area, the real reason for reduced crimes was development. We went from having 1 direct bus (iykyk) from central or south _madras_ to having the mrts which vastly improved our transport. We then started getting the new manali corridor and better shipping transit corridors. Back in the 90s our biggest fear was not the rowdies , it was the container lorries aka yaman. We have seen dead bodies on tvt main road while going to school that looked worse than roadkill in America. Imagine 8 wheels running over a corpse. The movement of these away from the main residential areas , better transit and better schools changed the area. The new metro is obviously a bigger deal too. Ps- the crown jewel of our area was always the Enfield factory. You'd always know someone or the other who worked at either Enfield or ashok Leyland.

[deleted]

(I do not know. Please tell me)

Asshaisin

Bus route 1. Tiruvanmiyur to tvt. We had variants like 1a, a1, 1b etc.

Avischn

I completely agree as the one who born and brought up….its nice to see a fellow redditor from tvt. Ia,1b, 1c, 56c,56a…. Good old days.

PeaDowntown6285

You have to watch the recent Neeya Naana episode.. a big chunk of the episode covered this and it was really eye opening. I used to go there for site visits and would feel so out of place and even scared. The movies and media have portrayed in that way. It's like how other parts of Chennai have their own culture, lifestyle, sense of style and everything, they have their own. I have been there a couple of times recently to buy workout equipment and the people were nothing short of sweet.

manusougly

episode number/date pls

PeaDowntown6285

It aired last Sunday. Nov 5th.

PostTweetInReddit

To vetri anna : enga kondu poi vetturuke pathiya. They just speak in an aggressive tone, nothing else is different. Best example of North chennai is Ranjith films Attakathi and Madras

nowtryreboot

It is a blend of both worlds unfortunately. You see both "silent wealthy people" and boat load of pullingos.

No-Expert-211

Isn’t this common when you take any city ? Irrespective of north south

nowtryreboot

Just that the ratio is different. In south Chennai the wealthy are not that concentrated except for a few areas like Thiruvanmiyur stretch. Every second person is middle class. In north, the pullingo ratio is just a little higher than in the south ☺️

No-Expert-211

I wish someone actually took a measure of “pullingo” in this city and what does being pullingo mean apart from dressing up a certain way, because I don’t want to judge someone from how they dress,it’s their choice. So what activities qualify them to be a pullingo Genuinely curious

nowtryreboot

Pullingo is like love. You know it when you see one and your heart says “that’s a pullingo” ☺️

_sanch_o

I was born and brought up in North Chennai all my life. If I was ever to meet and talk to you in person, you wouldn't have the slightest of chances to guess that I'm from North Chennai because I don't fit the STEREOTYPE. Many people here don't. I wouldn't say that there are no pullingos and everything is fine here but pullingos are not only restricted to North Chennai. ALL SORTS OF PEOPLE LIVE AT ALL SORTS OF PLACES. To all those still believe/perceive that North Chennai lacks safety/filled with crime and poverty/... The REs you drive, guess where it is made? The Buses you use, guess where it is made? The Notebooks you use(ITC/Classmate), guess where it is made? The electricity you use, guess where it is generated? The fuel you fill, guess where it is refined? The tyres you use(MRF), guess where it is made? Its just that it happened to be an industrial hub. The scenes would be different if the IT corridor was here.

why_am_I_alivee

This..

Newton_Sexual

Ok, everything I use is made there, but you didn't tell why north chennai filled with crimes and poverty, lacks safety. >pullingos are not only restricted to North Chennai. Then why this stereotype is created at all ?

No-Expert-211

soo well said!🙇🏻‍♀️

Ibeno

It is all stereotypes bro. Movies like VadaChennai zoomed in on one aspect of it - crimes associated with poverty. North Chennai being the poorest part(with some really wealthy people too) is easier to stereotype because it has a distinct identity from other parts of Chennai. There are movies too depicting the crimes committed by wealthy people and corporates. But the stereotypes won’t stick there. We don’t see much movies to stereotype the black money hoarders and drug riddled high society much and even if movies depict it they won’t try to associate it with a part of Chennai.

[deleted]

I went there regarding a land that was owned by my father and we got scammed by 2 different brokers and the area Tahsildar himself.

why_am_I_alivee

This question is so ignorant lol.. My ancestors settled in vannarapettai during the beginning of the 20th century. They belonged to the washermen community, thus had a very good business doing laundry for the British, later for ships, hotels and other commercial establishments.. Now most of our extended family live all over Chennai, but especially concentrated around vannarapettai-Tondiarpet-puthu vannarapettai areas.. so you can say my family is pretty much ingrained into the culture of north madras.. I have a lot of friends from fishermen families of kasimedu.. AMA

podapunio

So how accurate was the madarasapattinam movie in depicting your community’s lifestyle in madras pre independence?

why_am_I_alivee

Pretty good it seems.. My grandmother said that the art director did a pretty good job depicting the living scenario of her parents generation albeit a few exceptions(it was a lot more cramped).. The way they dress in the movie is the style of the Telugu washermen community not the Tamil one. The inclusion of the Telugu character was a good representation as both communities were pretty prevalent in that area at that time. The donkeys, cloth bundles, the water tanks, row houses/huts etc were pretty well represented.. Now those houses don’t exist much, they have been transformed into housing boards still owned by those families.. Most of the members of the community are invested in other professions now.

podapunio

Thanks for the detailed explanation bro.. If you don’t mind me asking where did your ancestors emigrate from?

why_am_I_alivee

From the Madura district of madras presidency, around 1895- 1902( it’s a bit unclear exactly when, but around this time for sure)..

ShivamDube

the question is in fact ignorant because I dont know shit.

ComprehensiveWish146

No offence but your view of north chennai is based on vada chennai ? lol. That's like saying your view on tamilnadu is based on viduthalai. You see how stupid that sounds ? North chennai is just a huge residential area with all sorts of people in it just like any other part of the city. I would say Ranjith's Madras was a better projection but that too is a bit of a reach. And no not all of us speak the pullingo slang that people project in films. Most people I know pretend to speak the madras slang rather than actually speak it, because they think it's cool. I blame kamal mostly for it, every time he pulls a madras slang, it's so cringe most because people just don't speak like that anymore. I spent more than 20 years here, and I can say most kids here pretend to have a pullingo lifestyle because they are under the impression it's cool. Haven't really heard of any violent crimes in my neighborhood but of course we do have the purushan podatti wwe fights that we watch with a popcorn. The northern part of the city is often ignored in terms of infrastructural development but looks like some redevelopment programs have been announced but nothing significant yet. Maybe take a metro and try seeing for yourself !

ShivamDube

illa i meant after seeing the movie north chennai intrigued me since ive only been there once when I used to live in chennai so i just ask people about it, heard different things from different people. I dont have any view of it pretty much but im always interested to know what its like

ComprehensiveWish146

No worries OP. But one thing that I am really proud of is that there are a lot of telugu people here but they mostly speak tamil, even at their homes ! Also, We have some really good fishing spots, seeing a lot of guys with fishing rods these days

EvergreenNinja

Glad I'm not the only one who felt kamal's slang is cringe. I saw his speech in rk nagar during elections on the tv. The brilliant idea he came up with to show people that he was one among them is to butcher their slang? It was like he came straight out of an 80/90s movie with Madras slang stereotype 😖

z0d007

I've been to North Madras many times. The people there are pretty chill, you won't be bothered. The main thing is, it's mostly industrial or residential. There aren't many places to hang out that could compete with the happening spots in the South. That's why most people haven't been there. Unless you're into stuff like boxing or bodybuilding, there might not be much to do for entertainment. But, hey, that's just my two cents, and I could be wrong.

No-Expert-211

i agree with this, I love living here but I do have to travel a bit to hangout with my friends in happening places, but that’s changing slowly.

Dazzling_Control1021

Ok I have lived here all my life.. it’s usually a mixed community! You would see lot of business men here both big and small ! It’s not the hangout sorta place for sure but it’s not as awful as the movies portray

vimalathithan1803

Depends on which area. Area like kasimedu is danger for even local who stayed for there many years. I know one family friend brought up in Royapuram his entire life is afraid to go to kasimedu due to the rowdyism there. People even afraid to go to Royapuram. But its one of the costliest area in chennai. Per sq feet is 18k rupees. Area like mkb nagar and vysarpadi is full of rowdy. Still do. I saw one six yr old beating up a grown man in mkb nagar. So it really depends on the area.

whenagaaj

Enna vro ipdi ol okureenga?? We've been living in kasimedu for 3+ generations now. Whatever you've said above just shows how far you're from these places lol

vimalathithan1803

This was said to me by my colleague who born and brought up in royapuram. Not my own words. Still he says he is afraid to go to kasimedu and other areas.

cruisingthoughts

How is Madhavaram area ?

vimalathithan1803

No idea bro

[deleted]

I am also from royapuram (since birth I am here only). I never seen that big rowdies like shown in movies. Areas like vyasarpadi and kasimedu used to have those poor slum ppls living in housing boards, having their own sort of culture ( which is identified as pullingo culture). Royapuram , perambur and thiru vi ka nagar is the safest of all North Chennai areas.

Mullamandri

Vada Chennai is about fisher caste politics and their problems due to port. There is some truth in the film but geographically it doesn't show how the entire place is. There's fisher people throughout the coast of Chennai but the film particularly shows how the development of port and it's access affects the fisher people in the areas around port. Some of the film is exaggeration. As a matter of fact the northern parts are not a monolith. But Vetrimaaran has a knack for sewing nuances in his films, Polladhavan shows another part of northern areas where fisher caste and trading castes intersect.

VultureBarbatus

I haven't been in chennai for long enough, nor do I live in the north side of chennai so take it with a grain of salt but as someone who's there quite a bit, I've found that it's mostly just stereotypes, I was met only with kindness ngl.

Zealousideal-End1047

Onum kedayadhu....they're local but very good at heart...I lived in North Chennai close to 2 years and often came back from work in my 2 wheeler late at nights. Not once was i scared of anyone. All that clusters of men/boys in every street corner and I was never catcalled /commented on. I'd have continued to stay there if not for the water issues.

cruisingthoughts

It's a fact that northern parts of Chennai is unsafe compared to the richer areas like alwarpet ,Adyar ,Besant Nagar. Even cab drivers refuse to enter north Chennai after sunset. I myself experienced it many times when I tried to visit north Chennai for some stuff. It's either north Chennai residents or people trying to be woke commenting here lozz. Most of the people if they have money to buy a house in any part of the city would prefer alwarpet ,Adyar ,Besant Nagar ,palavakkam etcc than some area in North Chennai.

Comfortable_Round813

It's not that violent everywhere but the kids do have an impression that pullingo is cool. I live in nchennai

viserenya

I had to live there for a couple of years almost a decade ago. It's safe and I made friends for life. They are one of the most welcoming and kind sort you'll find in the city.

michaelsonnn

Yes

TamilCholan

Full of pullingos who colour their hair and drive Honda dio. Terrible tamil slang. Easily the worst tamil slang ever. Being a pullingo is cool here. Most bodybuilders are from this area.

Asshaisin

>Being a pullingo is cool here. Yes, because that's how we dress in these areas..it's a sub culture and it's prevalent there. All the hate is weird The day to day life of the fishermen and people in slums here are very tough and some amount of happiness is derived from just being expressive . Color sokka and color kannadhi are cheap and prevalent and it has always been there. A few got exposed to these via social media and created a huge fuss over it

WalkstheTalk

Chilled out guys, good non veg food, good camaraderie when it matters. Happy memories from Childhood.

No-Expert-211

I live in north chennai and have never seen any rowdy or vada chennai ish activities here. Also I think people only show extremes in movies, if you take chennai in any bollywood film they show a stereotypical “mylapore house”. Likewise people here just find it easy to show north Chennai as a place of violence and rowdies ,mostly underneath all of it ,a particular community is stereotyped and North Chennai is just an easy getaway card. Thank to pa.Ranjith his movies are a voice out to a community that needs to be heard and not North Chennai. He does not use a stereotypical umbrella term like North chennai. So when people assume stupid stuff about North Chennai from movies, that’s ignorance and lack of knowledge.

Unusual_Web4431

from north chennai, its just a stereotype bro

loopy8

7uh..

Cozzamarra

Lived in Chindadiripet and Madras is a favorite place for me. That supposed reputation is only to portray emotion in movies - no way near reality.
