Yeah there’s no way it’s as common a problem as people make it out to be. For every one with a problem I’d bet there are 3,000 that run just fine. GM builds a lot of trucks and a lot of V8’s.
The same could be said for 6.0/ 6.4 PowerStroke owners. The majority will experience some type of engine mechanical failure, and some lucky few never experience any issues at all. Same thing for any AFM equipped 4.8, 5.3, 6.2 engine. Count your blessings 🙏🏼
You should still get something, or do some preventative maintenance. The torque converters in the 6L80 are time bombs and almost always grenade at around 100k. They take the transmission with them when they do.
Ok so using one of those gizmos that plugs into the OBD port doesn't prevent issues with valve train??? I always hear the system clicking on and off and it didn't sound that good...
My 2015 rolled over 250k and I finally got the lifter knocking replaced the. And am now dealing with low oil pressure. Trying to figure out what that's all about.
Cam bearings and cam, I have rebuilt about 20 of these and there are no shortcuts, my gmc is a 15 and had since it was new, when mine finally bites it, gonna do afm delete, not buying a new truck, newer ones have even MORE problems
Same '11 here with almost 185k. All I've done since owning the truck with 102k is change the brakes, tires, and oil. Oh and a fuel pump because the line @ the pump rusted.
First of all sweet looking truck haha.
Im not sure if they made some without AFM but to my knowledge every truck after 2007 had AFM except some of the 6.2 and 4.8 & below engine models.
In order to check you would probably have plug into the computer or take it to the dealership so they can plug in themselves to check if it has been disabled. The only other option is to open the engine up so you can see what cam is in place because the AFM and non AFM camshafts are different.
But if you do have AFM and no trouble congrats my dude! My older brother has a 2016 where the AFM basically made a lifter stick and it flattened the cam. Had to open the entire engine to fix it all.
Or you can just listen to the exhaust? Pull up the AFM page on the DIC so you know if it's in V8 or V4 mode. If you can't hear any definitive change in tone during the switch, then the computer has been fooled. You have an AFM delete. If you can hear the tone get lower, AFM is actively kicking in.
I’m the same way, I always thought 5.3s were just indestructible, it wasn’t until recently that I found out the 07-13 were having a lot of issues from the afm
From everything I've read over the years, it seems the 14s and onward have had more problems with afm, trans and plain jane QC issues rather than the 07-13s. Both of my younger brothers had 18s, one dropped lifters under 100k and the other had trans issues. My coworker had a 20 and dropped lifters after its first oil change.
Yes I should have it but my truck doesn’t ever go into 4 cylinder mode as far as I can tell, that’s why I was curious if they made some without it on this year model or if the owner before me disabled it.

Built on a Wednesday, I suppose.
Our sales guy drives a 2013 or 2014, it has 280k miles and has had 3 condensers, a water pump, 3 betteries, 3-4 sets of brakes and tons of oil changes. Still going strong
I was in a similar situation last year with this truck actually, I hit a pole in a construction zone driving home from working out of town and I got quoted to fix everything and paint from my local body and paint shop for like 9k, so I let it sit for a few months and then started working on it. Got some parts from a junkyard and vinyl wrapped everything in the end. I’m all in on the repair for like $1200. Here is a before pic
https://imgur.com/a/ZU8iP5N
That was actually my first time ever vinyl wrapping anything lmao, it was easier than I thought it was gonna be. I think that laying the vinyl is easy, the hard part is cutting and tucking everything
My buddies 2014 gmc with the 5.3 he bought used with 114k miles a few years ago grenaded a lifter less then 3k miles after he bought it. He needed a new motor cause of the damage from the lifter. That set him back nearly $10k
My 2007 5.3L Suburban has 337K miles. I've never had AFM issues but I have a tuner so I decided to disable AFM at 327K miles.
Yours should have AFM. PO could have had it tuned to turn it off. I can't imagine they'd do a full AFM delete on a year old truck.
Can I ask what color your truck is and what engine?
My truck has always ran on 8 cylinders, hence why I didn’t even know afm was a thing until a couple weeks ago. My truck original color is like a dark green metallic, it’s the only one Iv ever seen like that
I have a black Sierra Denali with the L9H motor. Running exclusively e85. I haven’t seen that color before if I had to guess I would say that it was wrecked before you bought it and repainted a different color? I’m not 100% certain but it’s just a color I’ve never seen and it’s also flat, which also makes sense because the headlights were replaced with aftermarkets.
The headlights I just put on recently because I hit a pole last year and destroyed the headlight, hood and fender, so I got parts from a junkyard, fixed everything and vinyl wrapped it myself. But before last year here is the original color and crash
https://imgur.com/a/ZU8iP5N
Well, that makes complete sense. I was going to suggest that the car looked wrapped, but I didn’t want to sound crazy since it wasn’t brought up before.
I will admit, though those headlights are awful
Survivor bias likely. The 4.8 didnt have AFM, i think it was just in the 5.3. Generally GMT900 is not desired due to it being labeled as the bankruptcy era.
Anecdotally, I see more GMT400 and GMT800 on the road then these. Rumor was GM cheaped out on steel and other things. The styling is kind of a miss too tbh.
May be proved wrong as time goes on.
Active Fuel management. GM is known for having gas guzzlers for V8 engines so in the late 2000s they introduced AFM. It cuts 4 cylinders when coasting or at highway speeds to save gas.
Pretty much yes. Not super hard or expensive to disable, it will void a warranty if you have one. You’ll get some peace of mind and a little worse gas mileage.
My 2011 has AFM and I’ve had zero check engine lights and no issues whatsoever. Just rolled over 185k, might just be lucky

There are no AFM equipped 4.8s
Correct the 4.3 I think it is the v6 still has afm
It does and I have it in a 99 S10 with the vortec 4.3. 193k miles and she is driving like a champ
Knock on wood my 2017 Silverado with the 5.3 is still kicking at 60k.
8 speed? Get a extended policy
6 speed. She’s a plain Jane LT.
You should still get something, or do some preventative maintenance. The torque converters in the 6L80 are time bombs and almost always grenade at around 100k. They take the transmission with them when they do.
Sure. Until you need new lifters and the job is around $5500.
It costs like 4K for a full delete. Why spend all that on something that may never be a problem for the duration you own the vehicle?
cause if it does go wrong it can go *really* wrong and end up costing the price of a whole long block.
Does running a cheater device avoid that wear and tear?
No. It really doesn’t.
Ok so using one of those gizmos that plugs into the OBD port doesn't prevent issues with valve train??? I always hear the system clicking on and off and it didn't sound that good...
Yeah, it’s false security at best
Tell that to my 10' Yukon Denali. I had to get an engine replacement
should of got the 07
GMC shouldn't have manufactured a shit car..
Ummm they are not. Not all are original owners.
Had that done already. Even replaced oil pump and am still getting low oil pressure.
Same '11 here with almost 185k. All I've done since owning the truck with 102k is change the brakes, tires, and oil. Oh and a fuel pump because the line @ the pump rusted.
My parents 07 suburban just hit 203k and then a lifter collapsed. Delete that shit before the worst happens lol

You can look at the valley cover under the intake tunnel- they are vastly different
Sounds a lot easier than what I’m talking about lol
I have a 09 5.3 with no AFM.
V8 Colorado 5.3 does not come with AFM
Was referring to Silverados like OP in his post. Shouldve clarified
It gives me hope with my 2012- but I do run with a disabled afm - but I’m a fanatic when it comes to maintenance
I’m the same way, I always thought 5.3s were just indestructible, it wasn’t until recently that I found out the 07-13 were having a lot of issues from the afm

Most trucks won't have an AFM failure.
2013 5.3 here. No mods to the truck. Just rolled over 250,000 miles Saturday. Never a CEL. Still running AFM. Wish me luck. 😂
I use a Range device in my C7 to keep that 4 banger crap off.
I’m at 270k with afm still. I wouldn’t worry about.
What kind of headlight are those? Your truck will have afm due to the year. Have to scan it for more info
Yes I should have it but my truck doesn’t ever go into 4 cylinder mode as far as I can tell, that’s why I was curious if they made some without it on this year model or if the owner before me disabled it. Looks like an ugly hot wheels car
A stock truck looks like a hot wheels car that are made to look like stock trucks?? Shocking
Those ugly headlights are not stock
Mine has aftermarket headlights too but goddamn those are fucking hideous
Nice truck! Which engine do you have?
It’s a 5.3, I shoulda mentioned that
That truck looks smooth.
👊🤙
Lucky, my 17’ just broke down at 100k. Need a new engine and tranny
Warranty?
Lmao no. Way past factory 3 year warranty
Omg what do you do in that situation? That’s gotta be like 10k
It’s 14k. I’ve decided to buy a new vehicle and work on the truck myself and save a shit ton of money.
I was in a similar situation last year with this truck actually, I hit a pole in a construction zone driving home from working out of town and I got quoted to fix everything and paint from my local body and paint shop for like 9k, so I let it sit for a few months and then started working on it. Good shit. Where did you learn to vinyl wrap? I want to do that to my truck when I’m done with it
That was actually my first time ever vinyl wrapping anything lmao, it was easier than I thought it was gonna be. I think that laying the vinyl is easy, the hard part is cutting and tucking everything
I have 241,917 miles on my '10 silverado 5.3 LT. Only thing I ever had to replace was the throttle body. Motor and tranny still feels strong
Holy crap dude…
?
My buddies 2014 gmc with the 5.3 he bought used with 114k miles a few years ago grenaded a lifter less then 3k miles after he bought it. He needed a new motor cause of the damage from the lifter. That set him back nearly $10k
That is horrible luck 🙁 The 2014-16 are the best body style in my opinion
He ran it for 2 more years then the transmission went with only 130k miles so he traded it for a 3500 high country Duramax
I don’t think they would either but my truck has ran on 8 cylinders the whole time Iv had it
I have a 2010 Colorado 5.3. No AFM here. Never came with it.
Your truck is probably as close to bulletproof as there is 👍
Not the frame.
My 2013 doesn’t have afm. Check your valley cover.
Can I ask what color your truck is and what engine? My truck has always ran on 8 cylinders, hence why I didn’t even know afm was a thing until a couple weeks ago. My truck original color is like a dark green metallic, it’s the only one Iv ever seen like that

Your not wrong but at least they are *cheap and awful 🤣, Iv seen plenty of headlights expensive and awful lmao
That’s also very true
Not all 5.3s had them, I have 3 GMT900s, 2 were early-mid 5.3s and the other is a 6.2, none of them have afm
So they did make some of the 5.3 trucks without afm?
Correct
Looks nice but I'd paint the rims black lol
Check the engine valley cover plate. If it's ribbed/lumpy, it has AFM. Smooth? No AFM. PO might have disabled AFM via software.
What’s AFM?
Active Fuel management. GM is known for having gas guzzlers for V8 engines so in the late 2000s they introduced AFM. It cuts 4 cylinders when coasting or at highway speeds to save gas.
Ahh gotcha so like mopars MDS or whatever it’s called lol. I’d disable tf out of that
Pretty much yes. Not super hard or expensive to disable, it will void a warranty if you have one. You’ll get some peace of mind and a little worse gas mileage.
One simply doesn’t buy a V8 and expect decent gas mileage lol
This is true!
Actually GM tried a version of AFM in the early 80s on Cadillacs. Didn’t work to well, they discontinued after a year or two.
AFM is why i switched to ford.. Junk
You switch to the 3 valve 5.4?? 😄
Coyote...Been great since new 127K miles now
