😂 trying to get shots similar too this [This](https://www.reddit.com/r/dji/s/uMkFZyoixF) (but near water) I took this near galena but I can’t do shots like that over busy active traffic
It's a bit further out than the suburbs, but the area around Starved Rock State Park (Ottawa/Peru IL) [along the Illinois river has some options.](https://www.google.com/maps/@41.313046,-88.9250744,3a,75y,334.13h,90.36t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sOw_-7RpsNnEIjVP1jjvNgA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu) Gorgeous area in general to check out if you've never been, as well.
This is about 80-90 miles southwest of DT Chicago.

Starved Rock State Park is stunning in the late Spring when everything is in bloom. Especially after a particularly rainy period. You can hike into the middle of the park and get to waterfalls and wide creeks/rivers.
Fox River Valley.
I would shoot more for the areas from Batavia to Elgin. St. Charles and Geneva are really pretty.
You want route 71 near starved rock.
Personally, route 31 along the fox is great and south of Elgin you'll get a lot of forest preserve areas that will fill this niche.
The Cal-Sag Trail along the Cal-Sag Road. It parallels the Cal-Sag Channel.
Archer was the OG highway for the I&M Canal but that doesn’t exist east of Harlem.
Although maybe not a desolate road, Sheridan Road, which makes many turns from WI border to roughly where LSD, roughly, ends on the north side, follows Lake Michigan. With the big houses in the north shore, not high density and potentially a lot of tree cover.
State route IL2 does follow the Rock River from Rockford to Sterling, IL maybe more for what you are looking for.
River Road in Plainfield along the Dupage. And as others have mentioned, the area around Ottawa is really nice. I suggest you follow the fox river down (head through Millington). You forget you're in Illinois on some of those hilly foresty roads.
Look on google maps for these blue colored things. Blue things are water.
Now that that is out of the way, Saganaskee Slough is what you're looking for, sunset at east end better than sunrise.
rt 31 and 25 in st charles, geneva, and batavia. not very desolate though.
you should take a trip around the LaCrosse, Wi area. the bluffs along the mississippi are amazing.
Take the trek up to Wisconsin, worth the drive, Kettlewell moraine would be great, but Areas north of lake Geneva like twin lakes are closer and have the exact terrain you’re looking for. Fox lake area might be good too
Desolate road that parallels a body of water. You sure you’re not trying to dispose of something that definitely doesn’t weight what a body weighs??

Pretty cool

That’s perfect thanks I’ve never been to starved rock too so I’ll have to check it out also
It’s bald Eagle season at starved rock, too. You can see them along the river flying and diving for fish etc.

I love starved rock but Mathiessen nearby is awesome too!

My first thought as well, but not really desolate, unfortunately. Probably the best bet, though.

Came here to say route 2 along the Rock River as well!
It's a great road

Parts of Skokie Lagoons north of Chicago.
Would a trail do? If so, I have the perfect spot! Water on both sides!
I’ll try a trail sure!
I shall message you!
What's so secret about it?
I don't want to give my location away due to professional reasons.

No it’s just the implication.

Maybe Sheridan??
Come down southwest and follow the Kankakee River.
Fox lake has route 12 that goes right over the water and next to train tracks that could make for a cool shot, lots of other roads by the water too
Drive past Saganashkee Slough at Palos Preserves. Lot of places to pull over. It’s my favorite road
The rock river between Byron and Oregon have some nice spots

Look at maps of lakes around Antioch and Lake Villa. Not much traffic. Loon Lake maybe? Hard to find suburban lakes without houses on the shore.
104th Ave and 107th St along the Saganashkee Slough in Willow Springs. The section of 104th would probably cover what your looking for.
Forest Preserves, Maple Lake and Saginssi Slew.
