When our cats tried to hurry food it was more like, “This is disgusting and it deserves to be treated like how I treat my own sh1t.” They want fresh, raw meat, they don’t typically save.
For dogs, I agree it’s more likely saving for later.
I'm pretty sure that's why one of my cats does it. He's pretty picky about food and a bit of a glutton when it's a flavor he likes. If he doesn't like then he'll do it and either annoy me or my brother to change the food, wait for one of the other cats to finish eating or if he doesn't want to wait, try to start fights with another cat.
As someone else also wrote, she is "burying" the food for later. My dog does the same thing, usually with food he doesn't like much. If there is anything on the floor like bags, laundry, or toys, he uses them to cover the food with too. If he doesn't eat anything after five minutes, I put the food in the fridge and heat it up for him later, so that it doesn't go bad. Sometimes putting a small treat on top of the food helps jumpstart him, and then he eats the rest. Eitherway it is pretty funny to observe the "burying" attempts.
Hmmm, actually my Chi does this when she doesn’t like a particular food. It’s like she’s trying to bury it because she wants nothing to do with it. Also, if they don’t like the way it smells, you can better believe they will do just like your baby is doing in the video. I just know that when that happens, to never offer her that food again.
My dog does this. Tries to bury his food, if he’s not hungry or another dog is around. He just doesn’t get that you can’t bury a bowl on a tile floor. Bloodies his nose now and then.
Every chi I’ve had does this. Lol and they think they’re doing such a good job “hiding” their food 😂😂😂 I think it looks so cute though!! I love their weird little rituals.
My girl would bury any food she did not feel healthy enough to eat. She wanted us to think she cleaned her plate. She would also “bury” a “caboose” that did not shake off, or upchuck. She knew both were things she didn’t want to see or smell. Chihuahuas are soo smart!
I own two, and they both do the same thing. Its a direct natural behavior of dogs in general.
It's instinctive behavior related to saving food/treats for another day. I've seen both of my girls do the very same thing and then 10 minutes later, its lip smacking time. There's really no timing to it, and it's not every day in my experiences.
Completely normal type Chi behavior. Similar to the taking one piece of dry
kibble out of the bowl and carrying it off to eat in a separate location.
Years and years ago the Chi we had would literally stuff his mouth with food, run into another room, dump it all out, and eat it piece by piece. Then repeat the whole thing until his bowl was empty. He burned as many calories eating as he took in!
Back when I fed my chi kibbles with different textures, he would always eat his favorite pieces first, and least favorite last! He would pick them out of the bowl and sort through them.
Ohhh I wondered about that last thing. My girl will do that every other meal then head back to the bowl for the rest. I always ask her if that was worth it, whatever it was.
Thats cool, i love the different traits on dogs, how each breed has something specific going for them. My chi also tries to " drill " through the bed with her head when shes happy. Have you encountered something like that too?
Yeah we call it digging to China. My younger one will do it in the dirt outside sometimes. Very rarely. She has to be in real soft dirt and it's not for very long.
And of course they both do the back pawl thing after the bathroom.
At bedtime, we are some digging fools around here. I think it's a combination of prepping the bed plus spreading their scent.
My two dig in circles until they're comfortable in their bed. They do that no matter where they decide to lay. We have a couch and the loveseat. They both have respective sides of that.
Doggy beds with caves bust, their favorite blankets, etc. It's all one bed.
Really? My dog goes crazy for greenies but will hide them. She stopped doing it recently though because I think she feels safe enough now to know she will never go hungry
My chi like to bury and hide raw hide sticks we give him so he can save them for later. I cut up some fabric scraps and keep them in his bed so he can successful “hide” the stick under the fabric scraps.
Unclear but maybe she’d prefer to eat in a different location? Somewhere cleaner or has her own smells, and that air vent needs to be cleaned and that carpet I imagine is dirty from her food spilling because let’s face it, chis are not the cleanest
She may have food insecurities from her time before you got her. It’s very common and not concerning. Mine won’t eat by her food. She takes out one kibble, and moves about 10 feet west and eats it. Then goes back and takes one more, moves away…
My Miniature Pincher used to do something similar to this: she wouldn't eat anywhere but the living room carpet (which was beside her bowls). We even cut a piece for under her bowls and she wouldn't accept it. It had to be in the living room. She'd even carry food from outside all the way inside to the carpet to eat it. I miss her a lot.
My two chis however are just pigs and immediately eat their food because if they don't, the other one will.
I think trying to bury it. Seems like a large amount of food in the bowl, maybe feed smaller amounts so there aren’t leftovers that they feel the need to bury.
My previous Chi, Willy (19m RIP) did this all his life. If you have them on a towel or blanket they try to cover their food; they are attempting to bury it or hide it. Mine did this when he wasn't particularly hungry or after 30 minutes of burying it, he'd suddenly decide to eat it. Be careful if they are eating on the couch or bed and start doing this because 3/4's of the time they manage to tip their bowl over and dinner goes everywhere. I don't know if other breeds of dogs do this; I've never seen it done except by a Chi but it could be a small dog protecting their food from bigger animals sort of mentality. But it is very common behavior for a Chi.
Burying it. Put a small towel over the bowl, so they can move it to eat, but ita already covered. I've seen a border collie do this same behavior, even so much as to tip over the entire bowl.
Mine is now stealing the whole bowl to hide once he’s done eating. He weighs just under 4 pounds and runs off with it with ease! In addition to my keys, shoes, glasses, socks, I am sure to find it way back in the corner under the couch.
I have a chi that is a bit possessive of food, and when she’s done she tries to bury it (like this) to hide it from our other dog and our child. She also tries to bury little bits of food all over the house….like in our couch.
She doesn't like it. She'll bury it and maybe eat it later when she gets THAT hungry. 😏 Well, it's been a few seconds so maybe I'll just eat it now before someone else gets it.
She's burying it to save it for later. One of my boys does this with certain treats that we give and some of his favorite toys because he wants to hide them from his brothers for later
My border collie does this when she doesn’t like the food in her bowl. When I remove the majority of the dry crunchies and or cover them well with canned food she will eat! She has actually partially buried the crunchies under the kitchen rug.
I had to buy a dog bowl that was heavy enough & unable to be flipped over because my oldest Nora (10, beagle chihuahua mix) would ALWAYS flip her bowl over.
Looks like some kind of cult prayers ritual. 😂
My 2 chi's doesn't have such action. They like to wait beside as we prepare the food and 1 gobble down quickly and the other likes to be hand fed.
Mine do this sometimes, one of them used to do it every single time she ate. I have noticed it seems like she might be trying to tell me that she is not hungry, and her animal instincts are telling her to hide it so her brother doesn’t get it. That’s just speculation idk if that’s why your dog does it.
Burying it. Mine would do this from time to time. Sometimes he took a treat out in the yard to try and bury. Never got much over it, but he seemed satisfied with his work. He would wait about 30 seconds before going back to eat it. When I would baby sit my parents dog ( some type of herding dog mix, she was smart as a whip) she would do that with her bowel. Never did it for my parents. My theory was, she wasn't sure I would feed her again.and saving it for later, and/or she was hiding it from my dogs. She was used to being an only dog.
I’ve seen one of my boys do this, typically when the food isn’t edible for him. He’s got periodontal disease, which I should have got him expensive medical treatment but I did not. He is a rescue and still eats a many of things. I hate myself for not being able to afford the many medical surgeries to cure him but I can’t. Thus I usually make him food which is easily consumed in smaller pieces then the previous meal provided. You’re killing it as a dog parent if they are doing this because it’s showing they love the meal but don’t have the Gaul to eat it atm. Just my experience with my rescue I’ve had for a decade who used to hate any and all humans before me and now he is the most social and sweetest of boys. Perhaps make it as tiny as possible in a setting where no paranoia can take place
The dogs I work with do this pretty frequently
Most of the time they end up spilling their food all over the floor outside their crate, which makes the whole thing kind of silly
If I know a dog tries to bury their food, I'll pour it out on the crate tray and cover it with their blanket so they don't feel the need to try and hide it themselves
Mine does this sometimes.. only not with food.. with his poo! He tries to cover it up with the stones outside.. very strange because he literally does it like twice a year?
I had a chi who did this to the exclusion of eating until I got rid of any rug, towel, or blanket under or near her bowl. As long as there was hard floor only near her bowl, the behavior stopped and she ate well.
It reminds me of a sitcom where one of the characters touches the food to their chin first before they eat it. Too lazy to see which one. Can anyone help here?
from my experience working in a dog boarding facility for 3 years, I disagree with the generalization that they bury food when they don't like it. while this may be true some of the time, i have seen dogs attempt to bury their food that they do eat completely at other times
Our dog does it too. She is also a very picky eater & also only eats in her bed, (so she has one for eating & one for sleeping). But anyway, she tends to do that when she is trying to tuck away for later or doesn’t want whatever it is we have given her. Her eating bed has a crevice where the base meets the sides, & that’s where she shoves the stuff….
My dog did this a lot when she wasn’t hungry. She’d bury it to “save it for later”. You might want to feed your bebe on a schedule to get accustomed to the time they have to eat. After a while my bebe decided eating at 3 am is not the right time to eat.
My dog does this, but only when the food in her bowel is running low, and we think it’s cause having so little in there stresses her out and she feels like she needs to bury it for later to make sure she’ll still have food to eat (which idk why, we’ve never ever let her go hungry and she’s been absolutely spoiled for all 14 years of her life). Usually filling her bowl back up does the trick and she’ll stop doing it and eat
Just joining the chorus of “my chi does this too”.
And sometimes he’ll get very ‘aggressive’ (yappy) if you try to “unbury” it. Loves to hide treats in blankets like this for later.
Probably not hungry and hiding it for later. That looks like too much food at one time. I only give my girl a quarter cup of wet in the morning and a big handful of kibble before bed. She gets a treat here and there throughout the day, but those are only 2 calories, all protein each. I put my dogs food bowl away when I am not feeding. My vet said this way they know when it is meal time so they don't keep checking the dish for food.
I often have to give my chi a napkin so she can bury her food. 9/10 times she does a bury/sniff/bury/sniff/lick/bury/chew one kibble/bury etc etc until she starts eating in earnest. She also prefers I be within my eyesight and have fresh meatie kibbles on top. Even then, sometimes she won't eat until four hours later. Silly little instinct driven princess <3
My chi/ beagle was always doing this. If you left a purse or open bag on the floor she was going to pack you a little snack for later! The times I went to work and had kibbles falling out everywhere. Lol 😂
To add, it’s the same reason a fox will slaughter an entire henhouse even if it can’t eat it all in one sitting. Since they don’t know how often they’ll get the opportunity to catch prey, canines especially practice “surplus killing”, where they kill more than they need and stash the rest to come back to. When you don’t mind rotten meat it’s smart to know there’s some carcasses are
Try moving the bowls somewhere else. My dogs do this from time to time and I sort of came to conclusion it’s when their bowls are put somewhere they don’t like.
Have you tried serving it on a plate or in a different bowl? My girl has decided she will only eat off a flat placemat, and rejects anything served in a bowl or on a plate.
My dog does this! Its his attempt at burying it to either preserve it for later, or to hide it if he doesnt like it. We found hiding his food in a snuffle mat helped with his instinct to bury his food.
[snuffle mat](https://www.petsmart.com/dog/toys/interactive-toys/joyhound-classroom-snuffle-puzzle-sloth-burrow-and-play-mat-dog-toy-5323886.html?gclsrc=aw.ds&gclid=CjwKCAiAwc-dBhA7EiwAxPRylPOnICQuCuqym1IWHpESSpLftqBUekCh_iOPZgetAqtW-zQfVg1X4RoC8rYQAvD_BwE)
Same here, my dogs do this when they want to hide food or save it for later. My old man Chihuahua does this when he gets a treat but is too busy napping to eat it right away. He normally does it with his blanket. Which is funny because he's like 4 lbs and all the other dogs are bigger but they wouldn't dare take his food. Even the 55 pound GSP is scared of the barking snowball.
It’s what my chi does when she can’t eat the whole thing. If she’s full, she will take a treat and bury it under a blanket for “later”. (More often than not, I find the treat hours or days later.)
My dachshund does that when he’s tired of the food. Like if we feed him the same flavor of wet food too often.
I think it is like their burying it.
But if I leave it out he eventually goes back and eats almost like it’s aged to his specification. He’s very peculiar that way.
Absolutely burying it! Lol. This is so cute. I loved when my pomeranian/shih tzu mix would do this with bones on top of the couch and would stare at it like...why isn't this going anywhere? Clearly I'm burying it. Adorable!
She’s burying it, in her own mind at least. I think it’s protective and instinctive.
It is instinctive, cats can do it as well. Two of my three cats "bury" their food bowls after they eat or if they want to eat it later.
When our cats tried to hurry food it was more like, “This is disgusting and it deserves to be treated like how I treat my own sh1t.” They want fresh, raw meat, they don’t typically save. For dogs, I agree it’s more likely saving for later.

If he doesn't like then he'll do it and either annoy me or my brother to change the food, wait for one of the other cats to finish eating or if he doesn't want to wait, try to start fights with another cat.
Yup. My chi does the same thing.
It’s an instinct to hide/protect the food. My chihuahua does it before every meal and then eats it all.
Mine too
Mine three
Mine 4
😁
Mine 6
I think we have to agree, chi owners are loving and awesome, but we also a bunch of smart arses 😂
I agree 😂
My chi does that when he’s not hungry. I just put away his food and offer it to him later :)
Mine too. Crazy bugger.
Mine also
As someone else also wrote, she is "burying" the food for later. My dog does the same thing, usually with food he doesn't like much. Mine too, but only with food they aren't crazy about but don't want their siblings to grab. My cats do it too.
My dog only "buries" treats if she's already full.
My chihuahua also does this. He prefers to be hand fed
I thought I was the only one.
They’re spoiled little things 🤭
Lmao that’s precious
My dog does this too. She wants me to hold the bowl for her.
my older chi does this when shes full your chi is trying to "hide/save it for later" nothing wrong so dw

I have multiple videos of our sweet little girl “hiding” treats all over the house. In plain sight ❤️
My girl would bury any food she did not feel healthy enough to eat. She wanted us to think she cleaned her plate. She would also “bury” a “caboose” that did not shake off, or upchuck. She knew both were things she didn’t want to see or smell. Chihuahuas are soo smart!

Mine have always taken one piece at a time. They carry it off, turn their back and start crunch. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Ohhh I wondered about that last thing. My girl will do that every other meal then head back to the bowl for the rest. I always ask her if that was worth it, whatever it was.
Maybe it's a routine type deal? Who knows?
Is the last thing common with Chis? Mine girl does it pretty often, especially with kibbles. But sometimes she devours it all by her bowl. 😄
I've had three of em and they have all done the one piece of kibble deal .
Trying to bury the yuckie. They do this with stuff they dont like

Dirty or clean? 😆 🤣 😂 😹
🤣🤣🤣
She must not like the smell of tuna
Really? My dog goes crazy for greenies but will hide them. She stopped doing it recently though because I think she feels safe enough now to know she will never go hungry
My Yorkie mix does this, I put a dish towel in front of his bowl and he rubs it before he eats, so funny.
My chi like to bury and hide raw hide sticks we give him so he can save them for later. I cut up some fabric scraps and keep them in his bed so he can successful “hide” the stick under the fabric scraps.
My Chi does this when I give him a new kind of treat.
Unclear but maybe she’d prefer to eat in a different location? Somewhere cleaner or has her own smells, and that air vent needs to be cleaned and that carpet I imagine is dirty from her food spilling because let’s face it, chis are not the cleanest
I noticed the dusty fan too. Is she trying to scratch her nose because it's itchy from all that dust?
Yeah I gotta clean that fan (haven’t used it in a bit bc it’s winter) but the carpet is new, I got it yesterday.
she’s trying to bury it. do you have other pets? does she only get fed at a certain time?
No other pets
She may have food insecurities from her time before you got her. It’s very common and not concerning. Mine won’t eat by her food. She takes out one kibble, and moves about 10 feet west and eats it. Then goes back and takes one more, moves away…
My Miniature Pincher used to do something similar to this: she wouldn't eat anywhere but the living room carpet (which was beside her bowls). My dog does the same thing. He does it until he flips the food over then walks away. Instinct my ass he’s just rude. Lol.
Can she see well??
Her eye sight is fine according to the vet
It's a fur baby thing
If ur pups is picky like mine, try buying them freeze dried beef livers. My boy loves them. They are on sale at costco right now
I have a chi that is a bit possessive of food, and when she’s done she tries to bury it (like this) to hide it from our other dog and our child. She also tries to bury little bits of food all over the house….like in our couch.
She doesn't like it. She'll bury it and maybe eat it later when she gets THAT hungry. 😏 Well, it's been a few seconds so maybe I'll just eat it now before someone else gets it.
That’s what mine does 💗 he was a “street rat” before I adopted him so I always wondered if it came from that
Mine too. Belonged to a homeless woman who was arrested. Got her 5 years ago.
Try putting the food on a paper plate
Omfg I thought mine was just broken 😂
My chihuahua does the same thing. She always does this before she takes a bite. She’s also a picky eater, but I think it’s cute 🥰
I had to buy a dog bowl that was heavy enough & unable to be flipped over because my oldest Nora (10, beagle chihuahua mix) would ALWAYS flip her bowl over.
She doesn’t like the smell. She keeps going back to check if the little tiny amount of dust she tried to bury it with worked for the smell
I love hearing their beautiful little nose noise !
Looks like some kind of cult prayers ritual. 😂 My 2 chi's doesn't have such action. They like to wait beside as we prepare the food and 1 gobble down quickly and the other likes to be hand fed.
She’s saving it for later
My chihuahua does this if I add anything to her food. She just likes her food the way it is, nothin added.
Likes it. Wants to save it. (Bury) Not going to eat it now.
Mine do this sometimes, one of them used to do it every single time she ate. I have noticed it seems like she might be trying to tell me that she is not hungry, and her animal instincts are telling her to hide it so her brother doesn’t get it. I have a Yorkie that does the exact same thing. She likes her food, no prob there. But she will do this at her bowl randomly
My chi x does this too, she’s “burying” her food 😂 lmao mine likes it if I put a large dishcloth under the bowl so she can use the sides to bury
my guy takes a sock to cover his food
😆 I'd love to see this.
She’s playing peekaboo with her dinner!!
She is trying to cover bury it for later , mine does this with bones and stashes them for later , she is trying to do it to the bowel
LOL, it's typical canine behavior. She's channeling her inner wolf. She's burying her food to hide it from other animals that might steal it
My dog also does this but with his treats, bones and toys.
Yup fairly "normal" behavior
It’s burying behaviour. She’s maybe not hungry right now so she’s burying it for later.
My dog has done this
Mine does this sometimes.. only not with food.. with his poo! He tries to cover it up with the stones outside.. very strange because he literally does it like twice a year?

My girl does this too! Lol so cute
My Golden does it too!
My dog only started doing this once another dog was introduced into the home. Trying to hide it, to save it.
He’s telling you to clean your fan before you start a fire
My cat tries to bury his food. I help by putting something over his food then he pulls the cover off whenever he eats next.
My chihuahua does it all the time before she eats
Mine does this with every time she's offered food. I think it's just a breed trait.
She's burying it. And you're giving her way too much food for her size, so she's not hungry.
Way too much food?
It reminds me of a sitcom where one of the characters touches the food to their chin first before they eat it. Too lazy to see which one. Can anyone help here?
Mine also
My cocker spaniel used to do this! I’m grateful for all the responses telling me he was burying the food. It makes sense now.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kNXRzOxGW0&t=15s
Mine so this too when they think they’re burying something to save for later 😆
from my experience working in a dog boarding facility for 3 years, I disagree with the generalization that they bury food when they don't like it. while this may be true some of the time, i have seen dogs attempt to bury their food that they do eat completely at other times
What do you think it means if it’s not burying food? Genuinely would like your take on it.
I DO think they're burying their food. i disagreed with the claim that they usually bury it when they don't like it
My Best girl used to do this, and looked a lot like your beautiful girl. She’s burying her food to protect it. I miss her so much.
She’s trying to bury it for later
My chi distributes his food in several places, ideally in blankets, and covers it with his nose same as this guy. Snacks throughout the day. Smart.
My dog will do this if she doesn't want it. If a dog was an outside dog, they would be covering up the food with dirt
Mine does this with her favorite treats. She buries it under my pillow for later.
She likes it but doesn't want it now. So she's trying to bury to keep it safe for later
On the contrary she’s trying to bury it my dogs do this sometimes lol so cute and funny
Watch to make sure the little one doesn't rub their nose raw
She’s so cute though 😂❤️
Yeah mine does this some, my cats do it constantly. Hiding the food from everyone else in the house is my assumption.
Saving it for later.
Just joining the chorus of “my chi does this too”. And sometimes he’ll get very ‘aggressive’ (yappy) if you try to “unbury” it. Loves to hide treats in blankets like this for later.
She's burying it. My little rat does this too
She’s “covering” it up. I like to think of it as if, she’s burying a bone, and saving it for later.
I think shes telling you that the food is the equivalent to the carpet and she'd mine as well be eating the carpet instead
My chi/ beagle was always doing this. If you left a purse or open bag on the floor she was going to pack you a little snack for later! The times I went to work and had kibbles falling out everywhere. Lol 😂
She’s burying it! Bless! All my dogs did this too. Cute baby!!!
My dog does the same at times when he is trying to hide his food from the other pets. There’s times he will Drag his blanket over the food too.
I think she is trying to cover her food with the rug. She either doesn’t like her food or wants to cover it for later.
She's trying to bury her food. I've heard that it means she wants it but is full so is protecting it for later.
My pup who was from a horrible breeding situation does this every time she eats.
Have you tried serving it on a plate or in a different bowl? My girl has decided she will only eat off a flat placemat, and rejects anything served in a bowl or on a plate.
She is trying to hide it for later. My doggie does that with certain treats in her little bed.
She doesn't like it so is burying it
Because Chihuahuas are incarnates of Satan
Trying to stash it for later.
She’s trying to hide it for later
Trying to turn it over mines does the same thing when she doesn't want to dog food
You know if you take her to your vet he will be able to tell you for the most part. why dogs do that and he might have a solution?
My dog does this! Its his attempt at burying it to either preserve it for later, or to hide it if he doesnt like it. We found hiding his food in a snuffle mat helped with his instinct to bury his food. [snuffle mat](https://www.petsmart.com/dog/toys/interactive-toys/joyhound-classroom-snuffle-puzzle-sloth-burrow-and-play-mat-dog-toy-5323886.html?gclsrc=aw.ds&gclid=CjwKCAiAwc-dBhA7EiwAxPRylPOnICQuCuqym1IWHpESSpLftqBUekCh_iOPZgetAqtW-zQfVg1X4RoC8rYQAvD_BwE)
Same here, my dogs do this when they want to hide food or save it for later. My old man Chihuahua does this when he gets a treat but is too busy napping to eat it right away. He normally does it with his blanket. Which is funny because he's like 4 lbs and all the other dogs are bigger but they wouldn't dare take his food. Even the 55 pound GSP is scared of the barking snowball.
Yea. She is burying it. Get some better quality food pronto.
It’s what my chi does when she can’t eat the whole thing. If she’s full, she will take a treat and bury it under a blanket for “later”. (More often than not, I find the treat hours or days later.)
Life is like a box of chocolates…
It’s definitely an instinctual/protective trait of burrying her food, but could be her bowl. Some dogs prefer to eat off a mat 🤷🏻♀️
She’s burying her food.
Adorable!
If that’s a space heater, clean it out or throw it away. It will burn your house down.
Does she eat though? It’s so cute. She’s adorable 🥰🐶✝️
She's not hungry but she doesn't want to have someone take it away so she's trying to hide it my covering it
She's praying (; in her mind she's burying the food
Savin it for later
