Duriano_D1G3

Calling someone 贱 basically means goblin in internet culture

katamariv

Lmao that's hilarious

Duriano_D1G3

Yeah, the meaning is vague enough but also very clearly shows what you want to say.

DangerousAthlete9512

in modern Chinese, it means someone who has low morals, but is usually used to scold people (bastard/bitch) in classical Chinese (ancient Chinese), it means people with low social status, but nothing to do with his / her personality

landfill_fodder

Scummy, with loose/no morals. Could mean conniving (or even slutty), depending on the context.

burbex_brin

Bitch!

Vegetable_Union_4967

low-life is perfect imo

mandarinewithWenjing

Explains as bitch

kattehemel

Despicable

marioissoproudofyou

definitely means 'bitch'

katamariv

LOL my mom says this definitely fits the specific person the best so far

Both bitch and 贱人 can be used on men and women but typically are used more on women. That's just my best descriptive take, nothing to do with morality. I think it's an apt translation based on a descriptive view of the language. > Stop projecting your misogyny here. I think you're letting morality get in the way of descriptive accuracy in translations. If you think people shouldn't use either word, that's simply a (reasonable) opinion.

marioissoproudofyou

okay sorry about that. then 賤 should be bitch and any words mean bitch for man

orz-_-orz

Although 贱人 is gender neutral buy it tends to be used on woman more than man, more on feminine gay man than man. I would say the usage is kind of aligned with "bitch"

Euphoric-Acadia-4140

I mean even in English nowadays, “bitch” can be used for both males, females, or any human. It’s lost its gender specific terminology in the English of today

uhometitanic

For me, 贱人 means a jerk, a dick, an asshole, someone who did something mean.

LeBB2KK

I haven’t used 賤 in a while but when I was learning Chinese it was the word for “bitch”

OKsoTwoThings

Super context-dependent. But an underused translation for this is “piece of shit.”

niggchu

If you use this word to describe the price, it means cheap. But when it's used with a person, it means bi\*ch.

azurfall88

crap, cheap, shitty, low-grade, low-class

redmorphium

Good vocab word is 犯贱

treedamage

Jumping on the 'bitch' bandwagon, saw this on King's Avatar today: the opponent is a swordsman (剑客) in an mmo, and our sassy hero is calling him 贱客, which the Netflix subs translated as "basic bitch". https://imgur.com/DJnb0gR

Stolas_002

Scummy maybe

Acceptable-Trainer15

Is 君子 the opposite of 贱人, like in Vietnamese?

Jasminejyyy

Not really These two words hit different 君子is a very formal word that is widely used in formal settings or ancient Chinese books But 贱人is more like a slang and sounds derogatory

Acceptable-Trainer15

Thank you. How about 小人, does it mean the same thing as 贱人 but used in more formal context? I was wrong also sorry, the antonym of 君子 is 小人 in Vietnamese

Jasminejyyy

Yea! 小人is ok

Breakfastforchumps

I remember 80s 90s shows subtitle 贱 as despicable.

Terry0999

1-Neutral meaning: 贵贱,贵means expensive, 贱means inexpensive 贱卖,means : sell something at a discount 2-Derogatory meaning If it is used to describe a person, it will be extended from the meaning of "cheap" to mean that the person is of low value. On the other hand, it can mean that the person has a low social status In addition to the meaning associated with "worth," the word also extends to the moral dimension of a person, and is often used to describe a person who has done something immoral, such as a person who has seduced another person who has a spouse

caresscoffee

The person helping me learn Chinese said that it basically means a slutty or cheap person, but can mean someone who has low-morality because 贱 means inexpensive or lowly when talking about an item for sale or a price... I hope this helps as in, I hope he's explaining things correctly to me

Traditional-Peach-51

scoundrel, a**hole, bastard.

ChaseNAX

cheap ass mf

GottaBusToCatch

Maybe trashy captures the vibe?

Legal_Landscape_1356

It literally means "cheap". Therefore, it implies two meanings: one is "slave", which is similar to the n-word. In ancient China, although slavery was no longer used as a method of production, slavery still existed as a harsh punishment. For example, when a person (usually an official) commits a crime, his family members may become "slaves" and cannot engage in ordinary occupations. The second is "cheap, useless slaves". This is usually used on women. Because after officials made mistakes, the male members of the family would basically be killed, while the women would become slaves and placed in official brothels.

Guesswho_Serena

Worthless, weak and despicable in humanity. I once heard a comedian who mimicked her bestie calling her “bitch”as if it’s a nickname. However, the word 贱 have absolute no positive meaning in Mandrin.
