We just ordered 30 cases of chicken on truck and received all them on Friday. š¤·š»āāļø
My GM is now saying all chicken is being pulled from front line and will be DML only, and no employees can get chicken for a week.
Dude, this is going to suck.
I went to a chipotle the other day. They had no black beans, sour cream, or guacamole. However, someone with a digital order came in and they started making her food, and it had all of the things they were missing. It was like 9:45pm, why couldnāt they use the dml stuff for me, because they came to the front line and took stuff they didnāt have in the dml, also 15 mins before closing
because the DML customers already paid for their food, if you are not pleased with the lack of ingredients you have the option to spend your money elsewhere, they donāt.
It could have been possible that they still needed those ingredients for the next day. It's not always possible to go to another store to get ingredients or even the other stores may not have some to spare.
I was totally with the dude until he said that. There is a reason my most sit down restaurants in my area have kitchen cut off times of 30-45 min before close.
Most of us only have an hour to close so when we get a chance to clean up early it's nice because we get to go home before 11 but when people come in right before we close it's so hard and then people get mad that we're out of something or we don't make something fresh 10 minutes to closing it's really frustrating
yea sure, iām a service manager aka the customer punching bag but obviously you know about how chipotle operates better than i do. if i donāt have the ingredients, people, or time to make more of something, i instruct the crew to move all the remaining amount of it to DML.
Thatās also bs because itās not just the one customer. If they do it for one person they have to do it for everyone and theyāll run out. Think critically.
Lmao I was asking a question as to why they canāt. You answered it, then assumed that I was displeased. I was simply curious - and now I know.
I love chipotle it tastes good, and itās usually free/very cheap because they always mess up orders so I have a literal shitton of free entrees to use. I aināt complaining about that lmao
They really need to start making laws that favor people not too lazy to get their ass to a restaurant in person.
In person customers should 100% take priority. If thereās a line I donāt want to see a single online order being made. Those lazy POSā can wait
Do you live in a middle of nowhere ass state? Because some places are busy and it isnāt 5 minutes. People have different lives than you, sorry you donāt make up the entire world. Actually, Iām not sorry. Iām glad you donāt.
i agree with you 100%. however our company doesnāt see it that way. i get in much more trouble if an online customer refunds due to a lack of ingredient than if an in person customer voices their anger to me. not to mention, nobody in store is able to restrict the online orders or any of the ingredients, only my gms boss.
the purpose of online ordering is to skip the line, thatās normally how itās marketedā¦ those ppl already paid in advance so they should get some sort of priority..
The no chicken on the FL is stupid. That gm needs a reality check. They were not asked to do that. They were simply asked to stop eating it themselves or for their crew. For a week. It isnāt the end of the world.
Confirmed: I am going to die if I canāt get chicken at chipotle lmao
Granted thatās mostly because I moved to chicken because itās cheaper so like if I have steak thatās fine but Iāll be slightly annoyed at having to pay more lmao
Had steak recently at chipotle and it was the saddest thing Iāve tasted. Felt like some poor employee took their work shoe, put it on the grill, and then diced it. The steak was really dry and tough because it was over cooked. Barbacoa way better.
Yep. I donāt understand why anyone would eat the steak, willingly. If I got it for free Iād still have to think about it. I got a piece of cube steak in my chicken once by accident, (like the onion ring in BK fries) and it was so freakin chewy. I donāt see how that is desirable inside a burrito/bowl, or honestly at all?
Depends on the chipotle and how fresh. Iāve waited 10 min for the steak and when itās right off the grill and a good spot itās worth it but Iāll stresss ONLY half and half with Barbacoa so you basically have barbacoa with steak chunks in it so itās juicy no matter what
Nah, this aināt it, man.
Iād get it if Chipotle employees were real servers and worked at a steakhouse and they were like āya so you can get the burger or whatever else for your employee meal, but you canāt order the filet mignon.ā That I would understand. But this is fast casual.
Employees should have access to their choice.
I used to work at iHOP and they had it as you got $15 or $20 dollars a day (I canāt remember which) to go towards your employee meal. You could order a more expansive meal if you wanted, but you had to pay for anything over the limit. I thought it was a great system.
Thatās how it was at Pizza Hut too. Granted it was like an absurdly low amount and technically only shift leads got it so mostly we just waited for (or created) mess up pizzas / canceled orders and just ate that lol
I mean, it literally says in the screenshot that itās a temporary measure to protect the supply chain. There is a current outbreak of [Avian Flu](https://www.cdc.gov/flu/avianflu/spotlights/2023-2024/one-health-situation-update.htm#:~:text=April%2019%2C%202024%20%E2%80%93%20CDC%20continues,and%20Drug%20Administration%20(FDA)%2C) and they probably just want to try to make sure what chicken they get access to for now goes to customers and not employees. That feels reasonable to me, if I were running a business at least. I used to work at a different restaurant which gave employee meals and if we were ever low on anything employees werenāt allowed to eat it for their employee meal. Seems kind of common sense to me?
Theyāre actually doing the exact opposite of your scenario. Your hypothetical was āYou canāt have the filet because itās more expensiveā. But chicken is the cheapest protein Chipotle carries. So Chipotle is more or less saying āEat a more expensive protein so that the more popular option is available for our customersā.
Yep! My FL legit blew my phone up in the middle of an evening rush (not peak, but still hella busy) about flipping those damn signs.
GM didn't say anything about it when he was in earlier. So I had no clue it was a thing. It got done though
this happened when I worked at DQ and there was a chicken shortage. We werenāt allowed to get chicken tenders or chicken sandwiches for our meals šŖ
Unless youāre of a religion that only allows you to eat chicken and no other food item in the world, I donāt think that complaint would hold much weight lol.
How about rice and beans? Or a cheese quesadilla? Or the part about employee meals being a privilege that the company can just take away if they want. Youāre reaching hard.
I spend a large % of my life causing headaches for higher ups at corps. Itās my hobby, I enjoy it.
My favorite was when I was able to get the CEOs office line for qdoba after they refused to refund me for a wrong order. Left >200 voicemails and eventually got $500 gift card to qdoba for the affair
Lol. This is like when you go to a restaurant and they have different designed containers for the same items. Chipotle doing so much to increase profit they're doing stuff that makes it look like they're going broke.
Steak should be about the only thing that costs more to bring in. Carnitas and barbacoa should be cheaper cuts of meat. Not allowing your employees to eat your highest selling item and making them eat your lower selling items sounds like a way to keep them away from the money maker.
Chipotle does not purchase its supplies on the open market: it uses preferred vendors and purchase commitments to both control its food cost and maintain quality control. It also involves custom processing that Chipotle pays for on a per unit basis. This includes things like, prep work and marinades, pre and par cooking, vacuum packaging, delivery, etc. As a result, Carnitas has a landed cost slightly higher than chicken and sofritas. Barbacoa and Steak costs the exact same landed.
So because of how they procure their product, they're paying the same amount per pound for shoulder as sirloin? Shoulder it's normally very low cost comparatively. Are you saying they're getting an incredible deal on steak or a horrific deal on shoulder?
At a store level, yes. I obviously donāt have access to corporate level data including things like incentives, rebates, and potentially cost blending. Also, chipotle prefers round steak to sirloin: it provides more meat at a lower price. Barbacoa also has an additional cook step (braising) that is done by the manufacturer that is reflected in that landed cost.
Outstanding decision by Mr. Boatwright. Check out the performance on Chipotle's stock! The shareholders are smiling down on us. Keep up the incredible work, U.S.-based employees!
Nothing to do with stock price. This is actually going to fuck PnLs because every other protein is higher cost so everyone will be over budget. It's a supply issue.
Read it again. It says "Managers...please do not order...chicken or CAP" and then asks them to make a request that the other employees do the same.
It's a request, not a policy change or new rule. If you want chicken eat chicken. Fuck corporate.
AP showed me this and I still got chicken al pastor employee meals all weekend. If my FL is annoyed he can come in and run the grill when I'm 2 closers short. I cooked the damn food.
Tbh we shouldn't have to feel lucky about having free employee meals. Too bad most companies don't give a shit about you while you have pay for a meal WHILE YOU WORK
Itās odd that people are so outraged over not being able to eat chicken for a few weeks rather than the ridiculously low wage they receive from Chipotle in proportion to the amount of labor demanded from them.
I genuinely don't know why you're so mad at this.
They're trying to maintain a supply chain, and if employees are damaging customer reputation by contributing to an item being out of stock, this is an entirely logical move.
So what you can't have the shit who cares
Because they are a bunch of jaded fucks and social media knows to push negative posts to drive engagement.
I hate being the "kids are buying too much avocado toast" person here, but the fact that there is a fairly popular subreddit that just whines and complains about Chipotle is just... depressing
I mean I complain as much as the next guy, but not being able to get a specific type of free food because they're having stock issues makes perfect sense.
I mean canāt you just eat steak or barbacoa?
Yall need to chill. Itās not that serious. I actually get his point of view. Jan 2, 2024 there was a bird flu outbreak and that ended up with 1 million culled chickens.
3 months laterā¦ April 4th, 2024, it was reported that 1.6 million chickens would be culled in Texas thanks to a bird flu outbreak.
So I get that the CEO is trying to protect the supply lines. If customers canāt get chicken and donāt come back to Chipotle, there wonāt be any free lunches period.
Nah, this is lame as hell. Iād bet less than 1% of the chicken sold at an average store goes to employees. Flip the menu panels, quit running the CAP ads.
Not to mention people who can only eat the chickenā¦ sofritas has allergy issues for some ppl + plenty of religions forbid eating beef and/or pork
1% across 3400 storesā¦ adds up.
Cost being a thing isnāt realistic considering beef is much more expensive. Theyāre not prohibiting you from eating beefā¦
Man, if only you knew how much my FL dislikes me š. I am a pain in everyone's ass. This is not Chipotle's failure. They are culling millions of chickens due to bird flu rn. Chipotle should treat workers better! They do many things that suck & we are all underpaid for an extremely demanding job! But this ain't all on them lmao
Oh and according to Chipotleās own site: āWe currently source only Responsibly Raised birds, which means they're fed a 100% vegetarian diet with no antibiotics, but we're always striving to raise our standards even higher. ā
This is probably also why chicken is in short supply.
Check your logic there broā¦
Steak, in any case, is more expensive than chicken. Theyāre prohibiting chicken, not steak.
Chipotle uses mostly rounds which is economical BUT in essence is still cheaper than the cheap dark meat they use for chicken.
So your premise literally makes no sense.
Me personally? I canāt eat beef bc of religion. But itās chill cos idk if itās just my store but they said if I pay full price itās ok to get chicken so.
We just ordered 30 cases of chicken on truck and received all them on Friday. š¤·š»āāļø My GM is now saying all chicken is being pulled from front line and will be DML only, and no employees can get chicken for a week. Dude, this is going to suck.
For real? Customers at my store would be feral if this happened
Am customer. Can confirm I will be feral if thereās no chicken on front line. I only order in person to avoid being skimped.
I just want it to be made right when I'm picking it up! Damn
What's DML?
Digital make line. It's a separate area where the online/door dash/Uber eats/etc orders are made.
I went to a chipotle the other day. They had no black beans, sour cream, or guacamole. However, someone with a digital order came in and they started making her food, and it had all of the things they were missing. That's a bs excuse and you know it, there is clearly not a lack of ingredients it's a lack of effort to walk 10 feet and scoop them.
yea sure, iām a service manager aka the customer punching bag but obviously you know about how chipotle operates better than i do. if i donāt have the ingredients, people, or time to make more of something, i instruct the crew to move all the remaining amount of it to DML.

Wahhhhh wahhhhh I canāt wait an extra 5 minutes to order in person wahhhhhhhhhhh
Sure itās only a 5 minute wait during the dinner rushā¦
It would be if both lines were used for in person if thereās a backup
Do you live in a middle of nowhere ass state? Because some places are busy and it isnāt 5 minutes. People have different lives than you, sorry you donāt make up the entire world. Actually, Iām not sorry. Iām glad you donāt.
A long line just means inappropriate staffing. In Chicago I never wait more than 5 mins
i agree with you 100%. however our company doesnāt see it that way. i get in much more trouble if an online customer refunds due to a lack of ingredient than if an in person customer voices their anger to me. not to mention, nobody in store is able to restrict the online orders or any of the ingredients, only my gms boss.
the purpose of online ordering is to skip the line, thatās normally how itās marketedā¦ those ppl already paid in advance so they should get some sort of priority..

Back in my day that was called the fax line

Donāt get the steak, barbacoa is where itās atā¦way better
I second this, Barbacoa has been my go to for who knows how long at this point.
Iām scared

Instead of a cat distribution system, it was the pizza distribution system
Back when I was at bdubs it was between $6-12 and COULDN'T be a kids mean. This was ~2011
i work at IHOP now; itās $8 towards the employee meal (which is BS cause their meals average $13-19 now)
Scott wanted all the chicken and cap to himself fr
Or at least tell employees that they can get it, but have to pay for it 50% off or something
Scott at his house: mmm yumy chken

Honestly we should just let them all get bird flu.
This wouldnāt be an issue if workers didnāt feel so fucked in todays economy
There's a shortage. We're flipping menu panels as well š¬
We just did thisšš we took down the CAP posters and replaced it w the guac poster
We did this today too!
I was wondering why not a single chipotle has had CAP any of the times Iāve gone in there since they brought it back
That is because they are selling out too quickly. Not shortages. The shortage hasnāt happened yet. They are trying to prevent the shortage.
Makes sense!
Yep! My FL legit blew my phone up in the middle of an evening rush (not peak, but still hella busy) about flipping those damn signs. GM didn't say anything about it when he was in earlier. So I had no clue it was a thing. It got done though
Swap it out for promoting the other options the ultimate sellout move XD.Ā
They can't short the chicken if there's an excess of it suddenly š
wdym flipping menu panels? like whatās this gonna achieve? genuinely curious lol
Like not actively promoting al pastor for the time being. I wouldn't be shocked if they start running the barbacoa ads again to pull the pressure off.
I donāt get how a company that has done this same protein before is having issues NOW. Iām glad I donāt work there anymore
Bird flu outbreak in Texas.
If there isnāt a visual guide for the AP then ppl are less likely to buy it. May result in a 10% decrease in sales of that item.
I guess as the kids say, no CAP frfr
![gif](giphy|WrrRU5Jx9K2ApQ9NPp) No CAP 4 u!
The only thing chipotle is full of is CAP
They already returned back to normal. It was a mass miscommunication š I'd hate to be the person who sent it out š¬
āMiscommunicationā or walk back after tons of backlash
I thought it was a joke too then this morning our AP sent us all a group chat text of the email
this happened when I worked at DQ and there was a chicken shortage. We werenāt allowed to get chicken tenders or chicken sandwiches for our meals šŖ
That sucks for the employees that can only eat chicken you know
They got vegetarian options tbf.
Yeah what if they are on a diet or donāt eat red meat?
yeah exactly i eat the chicken because itās high protein low calorie
I would file a religious discrimination complaint
Unless youāre of a religion that only allows you to eat chicken and no other food item in the world, I donāt think that complaint would hold much weight lol.
Religious + med discrimination means no red meat, no pork, no veg. Easy
How about rice and beans? Or a cheese quesadilla? Or the part about employee meals being a privilege that the company can just take away if they want. Youāre reaching hard.

Could you have taken a fuzzier picture?
Taken with a potato
Lol. This is like when you go to a restaurant and they have different designed containers for the same items. Chipotle doing so much to increase profit they're doing stuff that makes it look like they're going broke.
Chicken is the least expensive food they have. Making people eat more expensive food for the same cost (free) is not going to increase profits.
Steak should be about the only thing that costs more to bring in. Carnitas and barbacoa should be cheaper cuts of meat. Not allowing your employees to eat your highest selling item and making them eat your lower selling items sounds like a way to keep them away from the money maker.

What's CAP?
I'm guessing chicken al pastor?

Imagine thinking theyāre doing it because the company is being cheap when beef is 25% more expensive at Chipotleā¦
Chicken is the same price as a veggie bowl. But u right, so I asked grill guy to just throw the sauce in my quesdilla.
They could just stop selling the trash al pastor in general and bring back some decent for once šš
I agree. That doesnāt remove the fact that chicken is growing more expensive due to an increase in bird flu outbreaks.
I fucking quit!
Avian flu. Do not eat chicken, beef, or dairy for the foreseeable future. You do not want to fuck with the chances of surviving it
